And expectations right now are high. Mrs. Clinton, mr. Trump, practically tied in some polls. Jenna Senior National correspondent john roberts is live at Hofstra University with more for us now. John . Good morning to you, jenna. The new polls show how much is riding on tonights first debate as people get their first opportunity to see donald trump and Hillary Clinton headtohead at the same time. Take a look at polls. Two polls nationally showing completely opposite things. Margin still very tight. New quinnepiac poll, nationally among likely voters Hillary Clinton leads donald trump 4443. The flip side of that poll, new Bloomberg Politics poll among likely voters shows donald trump leading Hillary Clinton by two points, 4341. Four way match up. Gary johnson at 8 points and other candidate, at two points. Jill stein. A poll in the state of colorado finds donald trump with a 1 point lead now in the Centennial State among likely voters. Keystone state of pennsylvania, both of these states very important to the candidates chances of getting the white house. Hillary clinton leads donald trump by a single point now, 4544. As we take a look at tape of the debate stage taken just a short time ago i would hazard a guess this is probably the most significant president ial debate since the first one between al gore and george bush . 2000. Because it could change the shape of the race for either one of these candidates. Donald trump could build on recent momentum if he puts in a good performance tonight. Hillary clinton might have the opportunity to turn momentum around if she is able to in the 90 minutes tonight, knock donald trump back on his heels. Certainly Donald Trumps campaign feels that is what she is going to try to do. Here is Kellyanne Conway on fox report last night. Listen. Im sure Hillary Clinton is trying different scenarios and trying out, testing out different zingers and lines. She tried that against senator obama in 2008 and a couple really fell flat because they were not particularly funny. The message has to match the messenger and delivery style. The donald trump youre seeing is one we see on the stomach every week. Reporter lot of analysis every week or so how far donald trump can go attacking Hillary Clinton. One Campaign Official says donald trump has pretty wide Playing Field when it comes to attacking Hillary Clinton. Donald trump is on the record saying he will be respectful of her. He will be quote, nice. Jenna . Jenna guess you could define that in lot of different ways. Well wait and see. Thank you very much, john roberts where the debate is happening. Stakes couldnt be higher as john is mentioning. What can we expect from either candidate . Bret baier anchor of special report. He joins us live from hofstra as well. Bret, as we were watching bill and martha almost looks Like College Gameday with different crowds cheering already. Here we are hours before the big game if you will. Im curious if you can give your viewers the feeling what it is like at the university today . Whats the buzz . There is a lot of excitement, jenna. Good morning. It is, the students are out and about. Remember hofstra is one of the only place is in the country seeing consecutive president ial cycles holding debates. This is third in a row on hofstra on long island. Get a super wide shot. Pan over here. Watch out for this thing. This is the riser in front of the debate hall. There is whole string of media from around the world they will have walkthroughs. Well be there tonight at 6 00 on special report. Everything is down to the minute detail. Each campaign has to agree to it, jenna. That is where we are. It is exciting. Jenna appreciate it seeing the riser there. Thank you to your cameraman. They always love it when we do impromptu shots. They love it, dont they . Jenna nbc moderator lester holt is in charge kind of moderating the debate. An article on nbcs website caught my attention. Im curious about it. You have moderated debates as well. A set of secret rules govern the event that the candidates agreed to we dont know about, bret . What is that all about . Basically theyre not so much rules, all of them as they are stipulations by the both campaigns. They eventually get to agreement. The temperature in the room is 67 degrees. Standing in front of a blue backdrop, no the a red one. You heard about the podium size that Hillary Clinton will get a smaller mode you yum that looks like proportional so the shot looks the same compared to donald trump. Those kinds of things are in that secret rules that eventually we find out about but the rule rules are that there are six fifteen minute segments lester hold will come up with topics. He will ask a question. One candidate has two minutes to answer. The rest of that 15 minute segment will be used to get candidates to go back and forth hopefully on policy. This is unique race. We dont know what the dynamic will be the dance will be between donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Jenna as someone who moderated debates before, is there any interaction between the moderator and candidates before the event . Very little. It is like, maybe a dropin to say, shake hands and say, hello and then, thats it. And then during the debate itself, you know i would expect lester holt, because he is under so much pressure and become such a focus, to do some pushback but he will have to do it on a factcheck basis probably on both sides. You have to be ironclad in whatever he is factchecking that that doesnt have any gray area. Jenna wheel see. Well see what tone the debate takes in the first few minutes. All the more reason to watch. If you could play out the day for either candidate for us, bret . Weve seen both teams very aggressively pushing a narrative ahead of this debate. Theyre doing this for a reason. Tell us a little bit what the candidates are doing and what youre seeing proeither team ahead of the big dance tonight . Theyre a expectations and campaigns are setting expectations. But, they are still prepping on the clinton side. Were told there was a debate session today. And there was one late into the night last night. Were talking about debate, mock debate, clinton goes up against phillipe raines, her longtime aide who is playing the role of donald trump. On the trump side we dont have a lot of details what he is doing. He is down. At some point he does a walkthrough here. That will be kind of a closed event. Then they will arrive here shortly before start time, 9 00 p. M. Eastern. Jenna something to watch. Do you often demand your studio is at 67 degrees, bret . Im curious. I do. Sometimes i hang meat in the d. C. Studios. Very cold there. Jenna you do it on purpose i know. Ice your guests. Bret, great to see you as always. Look forward to your analysis later on today. We have live coverage. This is the biggest news story of the day. Live Team Coverage all day long, all night, leading up to the first president ial debate of the election cycle of 2016. Watch the showdown between Hillary Clinton and donald trump right here. It begins 9 00 p. M. Eastern time on the fox news channel. Eric jenna, we have brand new polls ahead of the first debate tonight. Shows the race is tighter than ever. The Bloomberg National poll find donald trump and Hillary Clinton are now tied at 46 in a headtohead, oneonone matchup. Abc News Washington post poll has mrs. Clinton up by two percentage points, putting it well within the margin of error. Look at the quinnepiac poll, it also finds the nominees locked in a deadheat with mrs. Clinton at 4, to mr. Trumps 46. What does it all mean . We have iowa pollster who oversaw the Bloomberg Politics poll. She is head of seltzer and company. What trend are you seeing in the polls . The most important trend everybody is talking about the stakes for this debate could not be higher. You have multiple polls showing that this race is tightening and i think there has been this sort of refusal to suspend disbelief that donald trump could win this race. I think this morning there has got to be kind of the reality that in fact donald trump is moving forward, seems to have momentum. He has got some things to work with tonight. Eric when you say things to work with, specifically what . Well, our poll took a look at some perceptions of the two candidates and one of the things that a majority of likely voters said were concerned was Hillary Clintons health. A majority rated her fair or poor on that health. Now, a very strong majority, three in four, rated her intelligence as excellent or good. So, it will be interesting to watch how the candidates sort of deal with their vulnerabilities but also deal with their areas of perceived strength. Eric on the other side, how about the questions about Donald Trumps temperment, his character, inability for some to tell the truth . One of the things this poll also received there is equal concern on that front. We asked about the truthfulness about each of the candidates. Very strong majorities give both candidates a poor or, just fair rating on that. So, in order for one candidate to score on this, they are sort of opening up their own vulnerability on it. Kind of pot calling the kettle. Well see what ends up happening there. Eric there will be a tag line, you remember Ronald Reagan saying i paid for the microphone, there you go again. Donald, stop lying or hillary, stop lying or come clean or Something Like that . How do that affect the impact in a poll . Im certainly believing that as i imagine what is happening in all the debate prep theyre looking for three or four things to have in their pocket they want to be sure they say. Sentences they want to be sure they utter they think will have Lasting Impact on that. The trick is, it is, the electorate who is going to score it. If one candidate gets three and one candidate gets one, that could change things in terms of what happens after that. Thats why it is so exciting heading into this. Because anything could happen and likely will. Eric also, that could actually change some percentage points. See how close it is, for example, in colorado. A very important swing state. I mean take a look at this. One point separating mrs. Clinton and, actually two points in colorado. And mr. Trump, pennsylvania has one point between them. I mean it is so close. And at the same time, you have something in iowa that is starting on thursday. Early voting. Keep on thinking that the election of course is in november but you have got 37 states start early voting. How do you think this debate tonight eventually affects people casting ballots in a few days . That makes it exceptionally interesting and how they end up doing that and affecting that. People with nastiness of this campaign who just want to be done with it. So anecdotally i have had people say as soon as early voting opening up, they will cast the vote to tune everything out. Just turn it off. And i think the early vote kind of captures the people who are clearly confirmed on the candidate that they have got. What happens is, that, this is hard for a poll to pick up. There are people, very few undecideds but people deciding to vote or no, im not going to. Okay, i guess i will. No, this is just too much. I dont need to vote. So the size of the electorate is expanding and shrinking as people are turned on, turned off, concerned, angry, worried, all the motivations go into it. But the early vote for the candidates is gold. Traditionally benefits democrats. Republicans tend to like to vote on election day. Eric could be a stampede youre saying to the poll for the early voting. Opens up like he three days. Well see what happens. Ann sellser from des moines. My pleasure. Jenna what charges this man in a clown costume is facing. In large part because in syria this is where the opposition has its main forces. And as the New York Times put it today, the Syrian Governments policy there is allow any civilian to leave aleppo freely. If they stay they will be bombed. Theyre simply going to be killed until there is no one left in that city, jenna . Jenna something to watch. Connor, thank you. Eric a warning about longer lines, security lines at airports. Are you ready for that . Why the wait could get longer and longer and longer. Who is to blame . Can we do anything about that . Well the young voting group known as millenials they seem to turning their backs on donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Polls in one state finding nearly half the young people want libertarian gary johnson and or nominee jill stein. Why is this demographic turned off to democrats and republicans . Well analyze and explain straight ahead on happening now. Jenna right now new concerns for airline passengers, with the tsa warning long security lines we saw a few months ago could be back a few days from now. Congress may be to blame. Here is the reason why. If lawmakers can not agree on a budget by october 1st the additional tsa staff brought on to decrease wait times over the summer may wind up getting laid off. Well keep you posted on that. Eric all right. Americas election headquarters now focusing on millenials. You know there are more of them then there are baby boomers . Who will fare better keeping america safe. Midwest could see historic flooding, preparing for rising waters with more bad weather on the way. Eric here is quick look what is coming up on happening now. Midwest bracing for devastating floods. Residents preparing for the worst. Suspect is in custody after five people murdered in cold blood in Washington State mall. What investigators are saying about the motive. Shocking death of a Major League Baseball player. We are remembering marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez. Jenna were hours away from the first president ial debate. Hillary clinton and donald trump facing off on stage for the first time at Hofstra University in hempstead, new york. The themes for tonight are achieving prosperity, americas direction and securing america. That final point we wanted to concentrate on. What can we expect on two candidates on National Security . We have former senior director of National Affairs at the National Security council. Great to have you on set. Good to be here. Jenna what is the single biggest question both candidates have to answer when it comes to National Security . Its a different question in each of their case. For donald trump who has no government experience, the question would be what prepares him to take on this challenge, especially given the inconsistent nature of a lot of his comments. For Hillary Clinton she is trying to run not as president obamas secretary of state but as something new that will be difficulty. How does she separate herself from that legacy. Jenna curious working in government with a lot of different advisors and officials and elected folks as well, does government experience help you in making some of these big National Security decisions or can it be hurtful . I think it does help. Maybe im biased because i have been in government, foreign policy, dealing with the world is not anything else. Not like business, but its a world with no rules. Where power matters. Where alliances matter. Those are tricky things to navigate. Real persons is only way to figure it out. Jenna you say world with no rules. I want to play little bit of an interview on 60 minutes last night with the king of jordan. The conversation was about americas way forward in the middle east. Lets play a little bit about that sound. The american strategy in syria and iraq to use us air power and train forces on the ground to fight the battle. That has not worked. How do you move forward from here. . The problem with the west they see a border between syria and iraq. Daesh does not. This is problem for few of us in this area with our western Coalition Partners for several years. The lawyers get into the act but say there is international border. We say for gods sake, isis doesnt work that way. If youre looking in it and want to play the game by your rules, knowing that the enemy doesnt, were not going to win this. Jenna plays into some of your perspective as well. Those within government having some experience to solve the problems but then of course you have this question about whether or not what weve done in the past has actually been effective. Thats right. So often in the United States weil go defeat isis militarily or well not put in troops and use diplomacy to fix it. Neither answer is really right. You have to use a lot of tools at the same time and change the military balance and have a political settlement to get out. That is something we havent done effectively. You can argue russia is much more effective combining tools, force and diplomacy to achieve some limited ends. Jenna what would be the reception of someone new like donald trump doesnt have government experience going into this new world for him . Do you think leaders like the king of jordan would be responsive because somebody new, not with the old ideas . Well i think the foreign leaders will have to respond to whoever is americas president. We remain the most powerful country. Other countries look to us as rival, say case of russia and china or sort of friend and ally in the case of countries like jordan and i think there is some worry around the world that donald trump doesnt bring experience. There is a lot of uncertainty around his policies that makes people nervous obviously. Whoever is the american president will suddenly have all the problems to deal with on their desk on day one whether they like it or not. Jenna well see what both candidates have to say when it comes to National Security. One of the questions that came up in previous debates as we look to see the candidate of either major party is question about boots on the ground. That has been a big question in the war in iraq. It is interesting, i want our viewers to know this the pentagon is asking 500 more troops to send to iraq that would bring our number to 6500, which is below the 100,000 plus during the height of iraq war. Were seeing more troops going into iraq. So there are troops on the ground. What do you think candidates have to bring . What are you going to be looking for how they sift through the issue about sending more troops or not when there is already troops there . Thats right. What you want to hear from the candidates is something that sound like a viable strategy to tackle the problem of isis. Most of americans see as one of our biggest problems overseas. You heard Hillary Clinton say never again will i send Ground Troops into iraq. I think that is unwise. Any president needs to reserve for themselves the flexibility to use our military the way they see fit. Ruling it out from the getgo is unlikely to produce a successful strategy. Donald trump on other hand no nationbuilding. Not clear what he means by nationbuilding. The idea you simply defeat isis militarily and leave behind a vacuum leads me to think you will another isislike group to emerge in the vacuum. He needs to answer the question what comes after isis. Jenna so much focus on middle east. Im curious your perspective what you think is the single biggest problem or threat to america . Mitt romney had fame must answer of russia, which the president scoffed at but that has been hashed over time and time again but for you what is the single biggest threat against our nation. Americans focus on terrorism. There is good reason. Threats to americans lives, terrorism is the number one threat. Its a nearterm threat, when you look out at a longer term, there is a world were facing that we see more Great Power Competition we havent seen since the cold war. Russia becoming more bold. China becoming stronger and more bold in the South China Sea for example. That is sort of world really most of our leaders dont have experience navigating. Do you think it is more about a policy point youre looking for from either candidate . Or because the world is so uncertain are you looking more of a philosophy each candidate brings . I would like to see first and foremost, pragmatism, recognizing that our ends have to match our means, for example. We have to see some sense of americas place in the world. With are we trying to accomplish in the world and how will we accomplish it . I think that is tall order for either candidate. They will face a skeptical American Public given events of last 20 years. Jenna really curious to hear what they have to say about that broader question about what does an American World look like. What does American Leadership look like . See what answer they come forward with. Michael, great to have you on the program as always. Thank you, jenna. Jenna eric. Eric jenna, we have fox extreme weather alert in the midwest. A dangerous situation could get worse today were told. Thousands of people being evacuated in their homes in cedar rapids, iowa, and minnesota and wisconsin could see devastating floods. Matt finn live in the Chicago Bureau with an update on all this. His mother who was with him hasnt been found. 22yearold Nathan Carman and his mother, linda, set off on a fishing trip off the coast of rhode island. When they didnt return the coast guard started searching for them. A freighter found nathan floating on a raft about 100 miles south of marthas vineyard. Ficials say he is in gd condition. It is unclear what happened to linda and the coast guard is now investigating. Eric the man accused of shooting and killing five people in cold blood in a Washington State Shopping Mall is appearing first time. They tracked him down 24 hours after he opened fire inside after macys store. Investigators are trying to pin down an exact motive for this shooting. Theyre saying it is too early to rule out terrorism. You know after a spree of mall attacks have happened in our country, including a shooting, at a houston Shopping Mall this morning, that shooting wounded nine people and left the gunman dead. The shooter they say police say opened fire on people in houston as they were sitting in their cars. No motive known yet. We have criminal defense attorney. Jonna spilbor, former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney. Eric, jonna, welcome. What happened in Washington State with the shooting friday night, there is new pattern. What are they zeroing in on with satan in days there is potential terrorist motive. I dont think this one is terrorist connection there for a couple of reasons. This kid, the shooter, 20 years old, already had a Domestic Violence history. So im thinking this is an escalation of something that was wrong with him emotionally. Number two, they do think there is connection between him and an exgirlfriend who once worked at a macys. That is very remote. Makes more sense this was more personnel in nature and not act of terrorism. Eric eric, such a tragic case, one of the victims was a 16yearold girl that survived cancer and 95yearold woman shot to death allegedly by satan. Jonna has a point. He had criminal history. He had drunkdriving arrests. Apparently assaulted his stepfather at some point. Could he be kind of a copycat taking an idea of these other shootings and it is not terroristrelated . It is possible because often times when you see in Domestic Violence cases people with those type of histories their logic is not all the way there. They want to hurt someone. They want to make a statement. It may not be terrorism in our traditional sense of what terrorism is. It may be him lashing out, for example, at his exgirlfriend who worked at macys. These people sometimes, the pieces dont just quite fit and do crazy things like this, often very tragic. Eric they will obviously talking to the exgirlfriend. Going through his computer and his cell phone to find out what he is looking at. Other main thing, he apparently walked into the mall without a visible gun. Does that mean he preplanned it and plant ad gun or did he have help inside of the mall . Those are other areas they have to look at. Eric the last week in minnesota we had a stabbing spree. That allegedly by dahir adan. We have seen people go to somalia try to join he will shabaab try to be involved terrorist attacks. How do they know if he was inspired or by something else. Computer technology. See what he is searching. See what his cell phone records are. See what he is talking to and chatting with. They will check apps on his phone as well. Those are pieces the fbi can put together to see exactly what kind of pattern this person has. It comes down if they were selfradicalized, who they were speaking with and. Eric you see a picture of dahir, you constantly hear, jonna, they say he was terrific kid. Everyone is totally shocked. We constantly hear the same pattern repeated when they are these kind of attacks. Im not persuade by people saying he was choir boy. How much do we really know . I think eric is great guy. When leaves here i dont know what he is boeing to do. I am not going to kill somebody. That doesnt sway me his friends thought he was nice guy. Lets suppose eric is correct and plethora of information he is selfradicalized on the internet, why are we not catching that, eric . When you go on the internet you cant yougo anywhere while youre shopping. That is what we have to do. Start catching people searching for radicalized websites. Theyre looking at videos constantly and going through this. As jonna said, if you gone on amazon to search for sneakers all these ads will pop up everywhere. Why doesnt the government follow those people and start investigating them early on . Pull their cell phone records. See who theyre talking to and see what their messages are. Eric this is continuing sadly. There is another one this morning. We do not know the motive of the one happening in houston. Who the gunman is or suspect killed by police. Certainly that is part of investigation. Eric, jonna, thanks for joining us as always. Jenna . Jenna eric, new court action linked to the wells fargo Banking Fraud case. Why former employees are the ones suing after the company was accused of opening fang accounts for its customers fake accounts. A star baseball player dice in a boating accident. Hours from now his team takes the field for the First Time Since the tragedy. Were live with that story next. Eric outnumbered comes up at top of the hour. Kennedy and harris are cooking up a storm. We are. Okay, as you know, tonight is the night, clinton, trump, and their first president ial debate as three National Polls now show the candidates in a deadheat. So why are they tied . And can either candidate break away with tonights debate performance . That remains to be seen. Two big issues could frame the big contest, race and gender. Will hillary play the woman card and will trump hold back to avoid the bullying label and how should each tackle the racial tensions simmering in so many cities across the nation . Custom lecturn to minimize the difference in the candidates height. Some say what we take away from debates is really all about image. Substance, not so much. Do you agree with that . I think theyre both going to have massive makeovers before 9 00 eastern tonight. All that, plus, our oneluckyguy, outnumbered coming to you at the top of the hour. I will get a makeover too. Eric i dont know if i want to see a massive makeover. See you seven minutes from now. Jenna right now new legal developments in the wells fargo Banking Fraud case where the Company Stands accused of opening more than two million fake accounts for their customers. Now two exemployees are suing wells fargo saying they were wrongfully fired because they didnt meet the companys sales quotas. They claim the company was hoping their termination would send a message to their coworkers that they should engage in fraudulent actions to keep up with the quotas or risk losing their jobs as well.
