A couple weeks ago, it was all over. People were suggesting that there was virtually no chance for donald trump. What changed . A lot of people in washington are scratching their heads wondering whats shaken up in the race. The answer to that question is Hillary Clinton. All of these new revelations from new emails coming out, questions about the Clinton Foundation, and really the fbi interview that came out at the end of last week. All that sort of happening and coming into voters minds just as they are starting to tune in. They are coming back from Summer Vacation and checking back in with the president ial race and they are kind of reminded of all of these problems with trustworthiness and honesty with Hillary Clinton. Shes hurt himself in the last few weeks and i think that youre seeing that reflected in the polls. The question is does that continue . Youll look at both of those polls, donald trump isnt moving up. Its just Hillary Clinton coming down. Its important to remember these are National Polls. In a weird way, our president ial race is not a national election. We see some of the polls tightening at the National Level. That trend hasnt caught up yet in the battleground state. Hillary clinton still has a lead in a lot of those important swing states like ohio and florida. You might give a slight edge to clinton. Virginia, colorado are still seem to be comfortably in clintons column at this point. That could still change. Still have nine weeks before the election, but the National Polling trends have not quite caught up to what were seeing in the battleground states. Shes still up by your count . I think she came into this race with at least a built in advantage in the electoral college. A lot of the battleground states that trump and clinton are fighting over now, barack obama won the share of them in 2012. Hillary clinton can play defense in some states where trump has to outperform some of mitt romneys numbers from four years ago. One of the interesting points is that early voting is getting underway in a lot of states. You suggest that thats where democrats and Hillary Clinton really enjoy the advantage. Why . As adam was saying, the question of infrastructure and campaign organization, i think democrats built in from what barack obama and democrats built in the 2008 and built on in the 2012 election is still there in 2016. The hillary Clinton Campaign has spent a lot of money and its not something that really interests donald trump. It didnt really help him win the primary. It was sort of a gut feeling kind of a campaign. And some of that is change iing. Youre certainly seeming on the committee side that it may be too little, too late. Early voting starting already. Thats a problem. I will say this. The dynamics of whats happening in the National Poll do have, i think, implications downballot. It trickles down into the state level and so if we are seeing whats happening in the National Level tightening of the race, i think its more of a leading indicator of what we can see at some of those important swing states. Adam, is it a matter of Hillary Clintons post convention bounce sort of fading away or is it something that donald trump has done right . What is it that is motivating, explaining these new numbers . I think to get to the point that mike had earlier. You dont see Donald Trumps numbers moving a lot. Cnn poll at 45 , that was one of the highest figures we have seen for him. Otherwise, especially when you include gary johnson, the third party candidates, hes still below 40 in the polls. His numbers havent changed a lot. We have seen Hillary Clintons drop a little bit. She enjoyed a nice bump after the conventions. Now the Clinton Foundation and the use of her private email servers is back in the news. This is contributing to her numbers. Trump hasnt been able to take advantage in terms of winning over new supporters and theres still a lot of undecide d voter for clinton and trump to fight over. If her numbers are falling, can donald trump take advantage . I think he does have an advantage here in that basically everything people know about Hillary Clinton is known and all this new information is compounding that and really hurting her. Donald trump being a change election. We just had eight years of a democratic president. He does have an advantage here. But the question is can he continue to stay out of his own way. Thats another explanation of what we have seen in the latest poll numbers. You have seen donald trump not sort of blow up with a new controversy that has allowed all of these clinton controversies to stay up there in the consciousness of the voters. If e he could continue to do that, which he cant, but if he can continue to do that for the next nine weeks, he may not build enough to build on his voter base, but maybe he can depress enough of the clinton voters that he could have a s t shot. His socalled Trump University is under investigation right now because of the way it has scammed so many students who thought they would get a better opportunity in life. And we recently learned that since Trump Foundation has been fined for illegal activity when it made a political controversy to the attorney general of florida atd the time she was being asked by constituents to investigate Trump University because of the effects that these. People that shes responsible for had experienced. And of course, as we know, there was a phone conversation between them that contradict each other. The American People deserve to know what was said because clearly the attorney general did not proceed with the investigation. So the list is growing. The Washington Post has a long list of many of the behaviors, experiences, activities that trump is engaged in that raise serious questions. The New York Times discovered about 650 million owed to foreign banks and foreign entities. We know about his relationships with the kremlin and people with whom he has worked. And truly the list goes on and on. The scams, the fraud, the questionable relationships, the Business Activities that have stiffed workers, refused to pay small businesses. So clearly, his tax returns tell a story that the American People deserve and need to know. And his continuing claim that he cant release his tax returns because hes under audit has been disproved repeatedly. And so the question really is will he abide by the precedent that everyone else, republican and democrat alike, have fulfilled in providing that critical information to the American People. I think the burden is on him and indeed for the rest of us in the campaign, on our side rngs, the press, the public to demand what a big majority of the American Public want, which is for him to release the tax return. So im going to continue to raise this because i think it is a fundamental issue about him in this campaign that were going to talk about in one way or another for the next 62 days because he clearly has something to hide. We dont know exactly what it is, but were Getting Better guesses about what it probably is. And if hes going to pursue this campaign, he owes it to the American People to come clean and release those tax returns. With that, lets start with jen right here. Jen basically says do i think theres a different standard for trump in the media. And do i think that a lot of these issues that are raised about trump are dismissed because somehow the American Public has factored into their assessment of that thats the kind of guy he is. A lot of this behavior coming from him seems to be unexpected. Thats why for your and i can only say, look, this is not new to me. You can go back and look at a lot of what has been said about me by so many people, going back 25 years and so its something that i just accepted. When im in office, i work well and i work well. We have a long archive of complimentary comments that have been said over the years. And i think we should get those out. They come from and i know how to work with republicans. I believe that it gets but i am no doubt they would prefer not to have another democratic president in the white house. So im running for this job. They are going to keep coming after me. You dont keep doing the same thing in politics over and over again, but its not working and its clearly not working. Those who are looking over their shoulder right now. So i think that they are going to have to come to the conclusion that maybe they should not engage in all of this conspiracy theorizing. It doesnt create another job for anybody, it doesnt educate a kid, doesnt improve health care. Other than try to keep people agitated to take advantage of them. The investigation, hes asked for u. S. Attorney to look into whether your aids deleted emails. Do you have any concern that emails were deleted after they were already supposed to be preserved and did you ask for them to be deleted . No, of course, not. I have no concern on either count. Neither did the fbi. As youre doing debate prep, are you preparing to go after Donald Trumps personal life . Do you think his personal life is fair game . On a related note, is there a member of your staff that you think can play the role of donald trump . I am preparing for the debate. I think this will be a difficult and challenging debate, which is why im going to be thinking hard about what i need to do for the American People. I think theres so much in his political and public life that deserve to be examined. I am going to concentrate on what the American People were you ever to get near the white house because as i said, he is unqualified to be president and temperamentally unfit to be commanderinchief. I think this is a huge challenge that his candidacy poses for our country. And the choice couldnt be starker. So were going to talk about the kinds of things he has said about our allies and our friends. Its cozying up to dictators, his banning an entire religion from coming to our country, his desire to deport 16 Million People with a Deportation Force and literally so much else. Going back to the issues that might seem to kind of plague you. May carry over to the administration, if Chelsea Clinton does stay on the Foundation Board which they said she will or thats the plan currently, do you believe that could raise conflict questions . Could that mean as i have said over and over again, it doesnt matter how many timehouse ask me and how you ask e me, it will be decided after the election. We will decide the appropriate way forward. Its not going to be based on his payment to the attorney general. Its going to be based on who is better for the economy and who is better on foreign policy. So i think its newsworthy, but i dont think it will make a difference in the election. Were seeing new attacks. Mike pence speaking. Im going to paraphrase what he had 20 say about Hillary Clinton calling this watergate. We saw making references to her as being like richard nixon. Do you think those attacks are effective or at this point those that wanted an opinion on this already have one. No, the comparison to watergate dont have as much impact as those delivering the lines might hope because the folks undecided in this election are Younger Voters who many of them may not know the facts of watergate. Heres why this email controversy is a problem for Hillary Clinton. If potentially suppresses her turnout that people who are undecided or lukewarm about her all say the same thing. That voters who dont like her, shes a liar and a crook. If you go into this election thinking i dont want to vote for donald trump, but i think shes a liar and a crook, maybe im going to stay home. Those voters are the ones she needs to actually turn out to make sure she gets the votes she needs to win. This they think negative thing, they may not turn out. One last point. Which is reflected in the polls that are now coming out that now you see today a poll came out that has trump up by 2 points. Let me ask you about that. A a Previous Panel we had on a few minutes ago pointed out that, yes, you are seeing Hillary Clintons decline, but youre not seeing trump gaining more in those polls. He just looks better because shes dropping. Does that concern you . Let me ask david about that. What about that . Turnout is what matters. They could be seeing reflected in the current polls. Its a problem for her. Republicans want to get back into the white house. Those who want to get back in the white house are highly motivate ued to make sure we dont have a third term of barack obama. And the Party Outside of power is always more motivated to go vote in an election. Thats why she has to keep her people motivated. There was a professor that was quoted today in the wall street journal talking about the impact for the voters that david is mentioning. How to get them out. The Political Science professor had this to say. She doesnt seem on top of it. To them, that suggests youre not competent in todays workforce. Shes say iing it doesnt have do with the content. Let me respond first to a third term obama. As we all know, everyone praises reagan in this country. Especially republican party. Its interesting that president obama polling is higher than reagan at the same point. Youre saying that a will help turnout . When obama is the most popular guy in the country by a long shot and the polls show it. Secondly, yes, get out the vote is important, but what counts is the electoral map. We have heard this many times. Obama won clean sweep in the electoral map in 04. He won 10 out of 12 in 08. If were talking about polling, the secretary is winning a majority of them. We should also be clear about the percentage of popular vote. President clinton was just 43 and had 365 electoral votes. You only need 370. So, yes, the popular vote matters, but gore beat bush on the popular vote. What matters is the electoral map. Today theres no one saying that the secretary does not look better on the electoral map. We have been reporting that. Thats another question we have been asking today as well. Sure, the National Poll looks better, but when you look at battleground states, you still see Hillary Clinton is ahead in almost all of them. If it is about turnout, how does trump get the turnout . In the polls, you also see the gap closing between the two. And state polls often lag behind the National Polls. As the National Polls continue to show a closer and closer race, youre going to see the state polls. And thats actually, to bobs point, how you win the electoral state, which means turnout matters. Who comes to vote actually matters. Lets keep in mind no thirdterm democrat has occurred since before world war ii. These latest killings now bringing that citys homicide total to more than 500 this career. That is more in chicago than new york and los angeles combined. For next year, the liability may accrue, but for this year, i dont think theres any way they would be held liable because they did take reasonable steps. Heres what they did. They doubled the number of officers to the celebration from 1700 last year to 3400. So they doubled it this year. They position ed 45 surveillanc cameras, 45 in that neighborhood is a lot. They deployed more than 250 flood lights on towers. Thats a lot. They held a gun buyback event right before the celebration a couple days before where 60 firearms were returned with no questions asked. They even held a high profile gang a takedown on friday. They went to the communities and said, talk to members in the community. Tell them about what were trying to do. They sent out fliers and did all kinds of things. I dont know how much more they could have done. They really begged the community to stand down. What about the fact that this it thing takes place, this proceeds the west indian day parade and starts at midnight and goes until dawn. The fact that the first shots rang out at 3 45 in the morning, a lot of cities would be saying, its curfew time. Its not about the time of day. Its the event that happens and tragedies that go along with day, its the event and what goes along with it. The next time if something happens, of course they may be held liable because theyve been put on warning, theyve done all these precautionary measures. They put in extra people, a lot of officers and still someone got killed. What do you say to the community, you say to them you just cant have this celebration .
