"wall street journal" says negotiations are bogged down over the timing for lifting sanctions. one report but there's been a lot of them this week. the president is delivering a video message to the people of iran, speaking directly to the people of iran as we hear another leader, john boehner is set to visit israel. let's bring in karl rove and also joining us is joe trippi, former campaign director for howard dean. nice to see you. this is a very important topic and it's interesting to get this announcement from the president on the same day he releases this video appealing to the iranian people. please talk us through this. we've had the republicans appealing to the ayatollah, the president appealing to the iranian people but who is appealing to us and making the argument about why, why the american people should accept a nuclear deal with iran now? >> look. i don't begrudge the president doing this message to the iranian people. i do think the message was okay with the exception of one sentence. that sentence was, there are people in both our countries and bee ynd who oppose a diplomatic solution. that was a deliberate attempt to attack the israelis and no need to do it. the message was fine without it. the president's problem is that he's seen as weak on this issue. the fox -- latest fox poll 53% think america is less safe than before 9/11. 59% think he's a weak negotiator with iran. 57% think he's not been aggressive enough. 67% say they support military action if it's necessary to prevent nuke yar weapons. he's not looking like a strong leader and it's because he's not telling the american people what's at stake and projecting strengths and resolve in the situation. jenna: the same criticism can be given to republicans and we'll get to that as well but so far the only person that's made a case about what they think of iran is benjamin netanyahu to the american people. where is the direct argument about why we should trust iran and why we should trust this administration to make this deal? >> well first of all, president made clear in both those campaigns in 2008 and 2012 to the american people that he was going to seek negotiations with iran on nuclear -- on the nuclear issue. he made that clear. romney and mccain debated him on it and took the other positions and shouldn't be done. jenna: because he was voted in office that was the american people saying we agree with you on iran? >> i'm saying he said in his campaign that he was going to pursue this policy and he has been. i don't think there's an american who doesn't know that the president of the united states has been trying to negotiate a deal with iran. that is not the issue here. i think what's going on is look. in the age of digital diplomacy, you can get a message directly to the people. you couldn't do that when everything was staying on television and you couldn't get your message broadcast there but with digital diplomacy now, he can have people at the negotiating table and at the same time encourage people on the street in iran. jenna: why not do the same for the american public as well? where is that? that's going to be crucial to what happens here. >> there is no agreement. what's fascinating about all of this is everybody is taking sides. i'm for the agreement, i'm against it. no one knows what the agreement is. i'm sure if there is an agreement and that doesn't look like it's likely to come but if there is one, i'm sure the president will address the american people and tell them why he thinks this agreement is the right one for the future of peace. but i don't think that -- we're not there yet. jenna: we aren't there yet and the reports, everyone has a different role in this game. the reports are very difficult to trust right now. we don't really know what's going on. and part of the reason is kerry is speaking directly to his counterpart iranian counterpart. you have the republicans talking directly to the ayatollah. you have the president speaking directly to the iranian people. you have john boehner suddenly going to israel showing his support for the israelis but what about the 300 million americans impacted by whatever happens here? whether there's a deal or not. >> you put your finger on the important word, trust. the american people simply don't trust the president on this because he's not been patiently explaining to them what his goal is and why this is important. he doesn't need to say here is what the deal is before the deal is there but he does need to explain america's interest and what his markers are in a way that's credible. "wall street journal," nbc poll 71% believe that the deal that he's negotiating will not prevent iran from getting a nuclear weapon. that's a failure of him to communicate his resolve his strength and his vision. also remember, the iranian people don't necessarily trust this president, either. those -- joe mentioned those in the street. there are plenty of iranians in the street in 2009 in the green revelation when the ayatollah stole the election in iran and the president of the united states for 30 days over 30 days was mute while the rest of the international community condemned it. the president of the united states refused to join with them and said the election was stolen so his credibility on the street in iran is not strong erpt. jenna: what about the credibility of republicans as well, carl? there are other people in government that can explain to the american people why we should trust iran and why we shouldn't. we know it's number one state sponsor of terror. we know they cheat. yet even the republicans haven't been able to really formulate a message to the american people, those that are against this deal. what about that? >> i disa grow. i disagree. they don't have as big of a megaphone as the president but why do you think the president has bad numbers on this? republicans have been out there talking about their doubts about this process while the president is not -- jenna: you think the republicans have been successful in doing that? >> look. i think they've been right to raise concerns about it which the president has not forcefully answered. you opened this by talking about how the biggest voice in this process thus far has been that of the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu who made the case against it. and you know look. i know there's some criticism of the republicans for sending their letter to the ayatollah but it was a public statement that said mr. president, and the ayatollah, remember if this treaty is not submitted to the united states senate for its agreement then it does not have force -- jenna: we don't know if it's a treaty. go ahead. >> it better be a treaty. it better be a treaty. we've never had a major arms agreement submitted to the united states senate. jenna: joe, go ahead. >> we don't know if sanctions are going to be lifted in an agree agree ment. we don't know if it's a 10-year agreement or a 15-year agreement. all of it is speculation. jenna: but joe, we don't know -- even in this conversation we focus on the details of this nuclear negotiation and granted, i'm talking about the politics as well because you're both so skilled at that. but we seem to not really talk around the point of who -- the regime in iran who they really are. as number one state sponsor of terror, hanging people in the streets from cranes combroping their own people taking american hostages, being a spat sponsor of terror. killing americans when we're in iraq and everywhere else. we're talking around the point like this is another country, no big deal. >> no. want last days of the bush administration, they negotiated with the iranians. they were trying to get -- they had a freeze freeze. we'll freeze no more sanctions, no increase in sanctions and you freeze uranium production. period. they were doing it too. it doesn't -- yeah. we have to deal with enemy or foe, friends, however -- and they're not our friends. i understand that but we have to deal with the reality and the republicans to a fault i think have not offered up any -- what their solution would be to deal with iran other than saying no to a treaty that doesn't exist. and that they're just saying they're not going to agree to. >> that's not accurate. they have resisted reducing the sanctions regime before there's a concrete verifiable agreement that rolls back the nuclear program in iraq. it's laid out in the letter itself. >> so if the president has that kind of agreement then everything is going to be just great right? >> i do think he's right and this is from the looney left over here because truly i think the media treated this as if it were a sports game. politics as judy miller can tell you it's nuanced and all politics is local and we understand that the prime minister netanyahu is somebody who understands the electorate and that's what the press did not cover. it also did not cover that you know, in 2012 three years ago this month the president said i will take a different look. the press ignored that. so they just you know went over the whole thing as they saw it. gregg: i was watching some coverage tuesday night. cbs, nbc they really seem to veer into some blatant bashing at times. nbc in particular saying this netanyahu's win could destroy any chance of a peace plan. over the top? >> absolutely over the top because you know if you just look at what the palestinians were saying the "new york times" quoted one of them as saying that they were actually glad about bb netanyahu's victory. now we could stop all pretense that the negotiations were going to lead anywhere and the palestinians could now wage what he calls their diplomatic intufada. peace negotiations are dead in water but the campaign disinvestment in israel isolation of israel may continue. that's the danger and that's what the press should have focused on not the dead in the water peace process. that's ridiculous. gregg: i have to leave it at that and i did short change you, ellen. i'll make it up to you next time. i appreciate t. good to see you both. >> thank you. jenna: next hour on "happening now" murder suspect robert durst seems to confess on audio. ask his lawyers use that clip so it helps him?
