Foreign Affairs Correspondent greg palkot is in Northern Iraq. Well be with him in a moment but first Jennifer Griffin live at the pentagon. Jennifer . Reporter jenna, the 136 marine and special operations military advisors now on the ground in the irbil area are doing predeployment site survey which sources tell me could lead to more american boots on the ground despite administration assurances that u. S. Combat troops wont return to iraq. The president has authorized me to go ahead and send about 130 new assess meant team members up to Northern Iraq in the irbil area. What has happened, weve done humanitarian airdrops on the mountain to reach the population as well as strikes to insure that isil terrorists are not threatening that population but we also need to figure out how to move that population to a space place and get them humanitarian assistance. Reporter the assessment teams dont know how many yazidis are still on the mountain. It could be mount thousands. Some have come down from the mountain into isis held territory in syria with no clear route to safe haven. Privately planners dont know what the u. S. Can do to stop isis without putting boots on the ground. British planes are participating in humanitarian airdrops to the yazidis. In a surprise visit after visiting baghdad, the French Foreign minister told others to wake up to the isis threat. It is holiday period in our western countries but when people are dying you must come back from vacation, a jab at european leaders who typically take the month of august and other World Leaders who may also be on vacation. Privately senior military Officials Say they have been given a mission without a strategy and right now theyre simply playing whacamole against a very limited set of eyes sis targets. Jenna. Jenna more to the story. Jennifer, thank you. With more on the political situation and human hewlettpackard crisis in iraq, greg palkot on the ground, live in irbil with the latest. A lot of fast moving developments, greg. Reporter acting Prime MinisterNouri Almaliki is digging in his heels and looks like the fix is in. He went on state tv and wants the top court to rule on decision to replace him with a more moderate politician. Even irans Ayatollah Khamenei khamenei we saw a small chunk of that. Take a look what we saw. Youre looking at human costs of isis militant savagery. Christians forced to flee their homes in iraq. Told to convert to islam or die. They came here to the courtyard after church in the city of irbil trying to survive. He said, go and reporter militants said go or, they would kill you . Or kill you. Reporter or kill you . Yes. Reporter we saw whole families fleeing with just clothes on their back, often robbed everything they had by isis fighters. Hungry, thirsty, sick, parents worried about the kids and kids worried about missing school. This is one of the bestrun camps in irbil. One old woman begged they need help fast. One man, that eye spoke with and asked him what it felt like being targeted simply for being christian replied, no religion does this. Not just christians. It is other minorities and muslims are targeted by this iraq and whole world perhaps needs to take a closer look at this humanitarian crisis. Back to you, ed. Interesting because there are reports from u. S. Officials overnight that president obama is mulling whether or not to get involved in a broader humanitarian mission but humanitarian could mean broader military mission to get that done and theres a fear that would put u. S. Troops in harms way, more direct combat with isis. What are you hearing on the ground . Reporter that is the thinking, certainly, ed. To get to that mountain. Mount sinjar, where it is believed anywhere from 5 to 20,000 yazidis are still trapped. You will have to put boots on the ground and fight off isis militants still ringing that mountain. That could be a very tricky manuever. Marines coming here and special force operatives coming to this city will look how else you can do that, how carefully you can do that and hoping efforts by the peshmerga, kurdish fighters to open up a humanitarian corridor to get rest of the people off the mountain, hoping that will succeed in coming days and they wont have to go. That is looking at very closely. Ed. Greg palkot, thank you and please stay safe. Jenna clock is ticking on fragile ceasefire between israel and hamas. The 72hour truce end at 5 00 okay local time here in the United States. Hamas wants to end, an end to israels economic black aid of gaza as well as release of prisoners held by israel. Israel wants hamas to give up their weapons. Well see if either side comes closer together on that. Meantime a journalist from the Associated Press has been killed in an explosion in the gaza strip. His name is simone kamili. He is 35 years old. He was killed when gaza police were attempting to disarm a explosive device left over from the recent fighting. A translator and three Police Officers were also killed. Here at home calls for calming down a tense situation in st. Louis. More protesters in ferguson, missouri, overnight after the shooting death after 18yearold unarmed teen Michael Brown. Mike tobin in the chicago newsroom. A lot happening on the ground. What are you hearing. Reporter seems organizers and activists are able to maintain calm during the day but each night it seems to get away from them. For the Third Straight night in a row tear gas was deployed to disperse crowds as they became more raucous. On some nights rubber bullets were used. Another Police Involved shooting at 1 00 a. M. Police got a call about a group of masked men, firing or brandishing weapons. He claimed one of the young men pointed weapon at him. He fired. Critically wounding the young man. A gun found at scene. Message from the activists, even missouri governor, a peaceful pursuit of justice. We must show calm. Instead of burning bridges in anger, we must rebuild them with love. Reporter activists have been calling for witnesses to come forward and dispute the Police Version of the shooting. Police say Michael Brown shoved the Police Officer back into his cruiser, this is on saturday, fought with him and tried to steal the officers gun before he was shot. People claiming to be witnesses have come forward disputing the Police Version of events. One man who kept his identity hidden told local fox affiliate that he saw no struggle. Only Michael Brown with his hand in the air, then a series of shots. Activists taken exception with the Police Decision to withhold the identity of the officer involved in the shooting. The county prosecutor said it is Standard Practice to withhold the identity until or if charges are filed. Ed . Mike tobin, thank you. Jenna as the u. S. Steps up airstrikes on isis militants in Northern Iraq the pentagon sends in more troops and our european allies join the mission. That is our big story. What can we expect from this new phase of involvement. Massive search for a missing climber after a deadly accident on one of the worlds tallest mountains. Well bring you there. Husband of one of two american missionaries treated with ebola in atlanta hospital, plans to hold a News Conference during the second hour of happening now. Well monitor that for you and bring you news as it happens. Jenna back to our big story today, another 130 u. S. Troops now on the ground in Northern Iraq on what the pentagon describes as a temporary mission to help rescue thousands of families. Members of a religious minority that are trapped on sinjar mountain. As france also says it is sending arms to support the kurd in their fight against isis militants. Australias Prime Minister now says he wont rule out sending combat forces directly. Were going to this. With me now, former advisor to four u. S. Ambassadors to the u. N. Some are saying this is the door that is opening that will lead to further escalation in iraq, further involvement from the United States. Real boots on the ground. What do you think. Well the president s telling us thats not true. He is telling us that you know these are just military advisors. Secretary of defense chuck hagel is saying this is just a humanitarian situation. We have other white house briefers really downplaying this. The trouble that we have is, that we all know what is happening here. Jenna what is happening . Advisors, advisors that are going inside of iraq are going to need some the of protection. Isis is a killer organization. We cant send advisors in there and not have marines protecting them . So we already know that this is a slippery slope. What the president is trying to do is to hold his base back because theyre furious that he is breaking another Campaign Promise. Jenna im curious what you think about the humanitarian explanation of this. Of course this group that we mentioned, this minority group, the yazidis, need someones help. Yeah, absolutely. Jenna speaking of slippery slopes, what does it present to us when you look at Everything Else that is happening in the region and look at other groups out there that could also use help, food, water, evacuation . Are we going to send the marines into every single situation where the humanitarian crisis is going on . Jenna what do you think is really different here . What has been the gamechanging as far as calculating what were going to do in iraq . First of all i think the president has agreed that isis is so now powerful and growing that he has to do something except he is not saying that. He is pretending this is just a humanitarian situation. What he really need to do is come clean and say, you know what, i probably should have act ad little earlier in syria when isis was growing. Now that isis is really gone into iraq and causing us all sorts of craziness im not able to keep myp can pain promise. He will never say that. Jenna if the president came out and said that . I think if we had a little bit of selfreflection from the president , rather than blame game of everyone else, rather george bush or Iraqi Government, he blames everybody else rather than say i cant keep this Campaign Promise because isis is too big and too growing. Jenna you bring up important point because when ever we have conversations about iraq there is a lot of in the rear view mirror and there is a lot of focus back there and i wonder how you would explain to our viewers what do you think the priority is in iraq for the United States today . Take the past out and look to the road ahead. Too many times we look at policy, Foreign Policy as to whether or not we should send in military action or not. Jenna either or, one extreme or the other . That is not, military action is because the Foreign Policy fails. I really believe that. Diplomats need to do their jobs. They need to solve problems. When diplomats fail after really doing tough diplomacy, you transfer the file over to dod they have to deal with the situation. We havent tried diplomacy here. Jenna with would that look like here. Look like john kerry getting on a plane going from capital to capital in the arab world and sitting down having a plan, okay, saudis, this is what we think you should do because you have interest inside of iraq. This is what the jordanians should do. Go to ankara, meet with the turks. Not always the United States has to do everything. We have to have the plan. We have to push forward a plan and people are looking at us and asking, what is the world plan . Jenna speaking of a plan, as far as the Iraqi Government we heard statements what we like for that government, a new government, more inclusive, get maliki out. Yeah. Jenna maliki is not going. Even said today if there is changeover in government it would be unconstitutional. He ordered a lot of heavy military equipment into baghdad and calling it a coup. Using those words could be a coup of the government. What about effects of that . He is gripping power, no question about that. I think he is done. The iranians have dumped him. Ayatollah sistani dumped him. Finally the americans are getting to pressure him more. I think he is done. The big question right now can the new Prime Minister abadie bring together everyone . Can we send a strong message to the shias they have to have real power sharing . They cant have cosmetic power sharing. Jenna is this figure proamerican, prowestern . I dont know about that. He has a shot. He is not proiranian people claiming that he is. He was no the iranians first choice. I think this guy, Prime Minister abadie has a shot. There is a lot stacked up against him. Well have to make sure the Iraqi Military gets rid of shia militias inside. That is where we can help diplomatically play a role. Jenna ric, thanks as always. Well see what happens over next couple days. Few. Ed after Hillary Clinton took a shot at president obamas Foreign Policy. Jenna some new pictures of a very risky rescue off the hawaiian islands. Three men stranded on a 42foot sailboat are back on dry land today luckily after their boat got caught in the huge waves created by hurricane julio on sunday. Powerful wind up to 115 miles an hour and 30foot swells caused the sailboat to take on water. They called on a nearby cargo ship to come to their rescue. I was down and just laid down in my bunk to get a little rest and the boat went on its, what we call endo, it was actually at 90, or maybe 100 degrees. Keel was probably out of the water. Tipped on the side so much, all the jars and stuff started slamming into the walls. Table collapsed on me. Jenna you ask me why they were out in this weather . We dont have answer for you here. Powerful wind blew their lifeboat overboard as well. These guys are very, very lucky that cargo ship got them out in time. Ed no doubt about it. President obama and about to meet facetoface later today at a party on Marthas Vineyard after the mrs. Clinton publicly slammed the administration Foreign Policy. She said it was a simply a misunderstanding. She called the empty to say he so. Her spokesman said after they Say Something in the public eye they look forward to hugging it out when they see each other. We have lynn sweet, Washington Bureau chief of the chicago suntimes. I saw you having fun on twitter. Calling in life, having fun on twitter, one of the things you do so well. I will let you kick this off. What is this all about . There is grand tradition of hugging out important Foreign Policy disagreements. There was jefferson and adams. There was Douglas Mcarthur and truman. They really hugged it out. Hugging it out is one notch below beer summit when it comes to Foreign Policy stuff. Look, i think what Hillary Clinton did, first of all, her criticism was largely valid. It was certainly defensible. It was criticism and i think that she had basically the better side of the argument. Then, somewhat bizarrely to me, she decided to say i didnt mean it and i wasnt attacking the president. And i wasnt criticizing him when she obviously was. My guess is that she gets out of this episode what she wants. People will forget the apology and remember that she distanced herself from barack obama and his Foreign Policy which was signal she wanted to send in the first place. Ed lets get lynn in the conversation, who by the way i was at white house News Conference with president obama and you asked the question about the Police Officer in massachusetts which led to the beer summit. This comes full circle, lynn. Right. Ed what do you make of that . Why does Hillary Clinton one day try to separate herself from seems like unpopular president and says, never mind . What theyre trying to do, im told, theyre trying to shut down the story. They think it is the Clinton Obama handlers, think that this is the manifestation of reporters who dont have enough to do in august and that theyre looking for riffs. I dont agree with that analysis. Mrs. Clinton has longheld views and theyre in her book, and as you know, we should have given the rebels more assistance. With the situation going on now in iraq with isis or isil this is more dramatic. So the white house is annoyed, yes, but sees this more as a speed bump than as a major rift. Certainly repairable but she did get her message out. Ed jonah, im not sure its a speed bump because i want to bring in conversation a statement from democratic senator tim kaine, a little pressure to the president from the left. He will put up on the screen, i support providing humanitarian relief to iraqi civilians and measures to protect american personnel but im concerned about the timeline and scope of a renewed military efforts in iraq since the administration has conceded that the 2000 two iraq authorization for use of military force is obsolete and should be repealed. It is now up to the administration to receive congressional authorization for the current air campaign against Islamic State or isis. What do you make of this, jonah, this pressure from the left, not unexpected but on the president who has said im not going to put combat troops on the ground but overnight, hear more military advisors going, last time i checked those advisors wear boots sometimes and are on the ground . They all walk one foot above the ground. I agree with you. Obama has gotten himself into a very difficult position. So far his response to isis or isil or the Islamic State has been largely cosmetic. I mean i think he has done some important things. Work of getting rid of maliki is all to the good and deserves credit gore that but at the same time there is no strategic effort to actually destroy isis. There is no effort to really get rid of them as a military opponent. This is all to get the a seed yazidi story out of the headlines and seem like were doing something. John kerry has sworn, obama has sworn well never have boots on the ground. Strategically, militarily they put themselves in a very small little space and politically congress doesnt feel like, especially the left of the Democratic Congress doesnt feel like it owes him a lot of la latitude. They have to get reelected on their own. Ed lynn, has the president handcuffed himself with no combat troops . Boxed himself in. He is lucky congress is not in now and out until after labor day, so he has more room to manuever. There is onus on the administration to explain more about how this chapter ends. Ed lynn sweet, jonah goldberg, hope you guys hug it out in the d. C. Bureau there. We hope to get pictures of the hug on Marthas Vineyard tonight. Well bring that to you tomorrow. Thank you. Shocking revelations at one middle school after personal records of children are tossed in a dumpster on school property. We are trying to clean up 85 years worth of materials from Smiley Middle School and we had a lost parent volunteers in the building this week helping us. Obviously we had a couple of boxes misplaced. Jenna a couple boxes . There is the principal in the dumpster. What is more on disturbing story and what it can mean for safety of your familys information as we all get ready to head back to school. Powerful storms trigger heavy flooding in one major city. What officials are saying about cleanup efforts there. No, i never seen anything like this before. It is muddy. It is raining a lot. There are cars stuck. There are cars that are totaled and destroyed. You know this, is going to affect the whole Metro Detroit area. Wow. Sometimes nature is pretty scary. Extreme flooding on the east coast and the midwest and lives at risk. 6 inches of rain pummeled the detroit area closing freeways. The storm blamed for the deaths of two people. In the east firefighters called out between washington and baltimore motorist because it became to fill quickly. Water pouring into a cafeteria at a Good Samaritan hospital. The good news is nobody was hu hurt. Following these stories in new york city. We are outside and things have dried out. New york city between one and 3 inches of rain, but areas were slammed. 12 inches of rain. More than a typical summer. Many roads were closed including the parkways, fire crews had to rescue stranded drivers, and supervisor the flooding is worte thethan super storm sandy. The flooding, 6. 3 inches of rain, the last time baltimore had a bigger deluge was a hurricane back in 1933. They say be torrential caused sewage to gush onto the street. The flooding so bad some cars at the airport had water damage. Other areas had even more rain. More than 10 inches. Flash flooding throughout the state, some folks again had to be rescued. Cause power outages, dozens of people had to be evacuated in the city. The cleanup is now underway. Mud, trash, abandoned cars from areas flooded and possibly making the situation worse, thieves stole copper from pumping stations using to remove water from area freeways. Those in need can go and get a hot meal. Moving into new england, the National Weather service has a Flash Flood Watch in effect through tonight, there could be as much rain as 5 inches an ho hour. The bad weather will continue for the next several hours. Jenna we will have more on that now, thank you. Meteorologist william molina. What are you seeing . I want to spend a little bit on what David Lee Miller said. That total 13. 27 inches setting an alltime state record for the state of new york, the most rain we have seen in 24 hours. Just incredible. More rain than systems like irene or even sandy across new york. That storm system still on the move, areas of heavy rain across western parts of massachusetts moving out of parts of connecticut and into southern portions of the vermont. A lot of moisture with it, unusually strong cold front for this time of year in the month of august, looking at strong cold fronts moving across the country. Producing Severe Weather across portions of the northeast yesterday. Today the big story is flooding. Flash flood watch is in effect for main down to long island. Might have to wait a few days for the baseball game. Jenna shocking revelations, the middle School Principal is caught dumpster diving for a very interesting reason. Discovering sensitive student records thrown away. This is a surprising place to find the new principal at the campus, the reason he is digging through the trash, student records that landed where anyone could find them. A birth certificate, ridiculous. Reporter the student files were just tossed in the garbage. It has a students name, address, parents name and phone number and also has her birth certificate. Wow. Do you think they should be disposing of this in a better way . They should rea shred it if anything. Birth certificate. That is interesting. This led us through this right here. They should have been more considerate of all the information that is in there. Get a new identity. Pick note boxes and records. 85 records of material from middle school, lot of parent volunteers helping us. A couple boxes misplaced and work tossed. It was an unfortunate mistake and were doing our best to fix it and i think we recovered everything we possibly could be at reporter including a few boxes we handed off. The hope is no other records were taken before that. We thank him for his report. Joining us, a technically expert. We should also mention a dad. So this resonates with you when you think about where are my records and where can my kids records be when a hand over the records of school and everybodys going back to school around this time. If somebody finds your birth certificate, can they steal your identity . Not 100 . This is really wrong. Jenna offic obviously this note disposed of the way we saw, but is just shredding it okay . Are your kids safe . 20 extent, sure. What can we do to protect ourselves, how can we protect ourselves . Jenna how can we do that . Blackout parts of information it should not be given note. Black out the date of birth, the only have to see the physical record, they dont need all the information. That is still gold identity theft. Where do you draw the line . Most places dont need your Social Security number. There was a fox segment showing a treasurer who had the identity stolen. This information cannot be received online and we have to protect ourselves, dont give out your social. What do you do and they say your Social Security number or enrolling them in camp and asking for it, what do you do . I tell them i dont feel comfortable giving us this information and they require it, i say im sorry i cannot give out this information to you. Jenna do they give you push back . Some people write down the wrong number. The better track is to write down i cannot give this information. Jenna i was just thinking about your kids, protecting their identity. Good to have you as a dad. If somebody steals their identity, they are not applying for years, they may never know their identity has been stolen so do you check your kids to be sure if anybody has taken it . A way to be proactive . I do actively check my kids every once in a while. I make sure they are protected, but it is hard to do. A lot charge 10 to 20 per month. The best is to keep your kids documents safe. Jenna good advice for us and Social Security number. Great to have you on set. Should company step in and remove accounts tied to isis . Dagen mcdowell is joining us to weigh in on this. An interesting question because twitter has been such a part of so many movements across middle east going back. Specifically with isis, what is the issue here . There is one twitter account as an example to belong to somebody linked to the terror group isis posting photos of beheadings and other graphic images. The images were still up there an hour ago because i look at them. We should note one of australias most wanted terrorists is believed to have tweeted the photo of his son called in the decapitated head of a syrian soldier. That has been removed. John kerry spoke about it. His groups are using all the social media platforms to varying degrees. Twitter, facebook, instagram, youtube to raise money, spread propaganda, recruit new members. They are approving more question will content youtube. Youtube has a policy against discussing and shocking content. A lot of these sites expect the users to police the images and of this activity, kind of step back a minute. Jenna twitter has become so big. Politicians are using twitter to get their messages out. Why twitter doesnt draw the line to say we wont allow pictures of beheadings on our website. All of these social media platforms in particular twitter have been seen as a way to express the freedom of speech is incredibly important. Where do you draw the line is important. Look at it like this, at least these images are out there, when all the atrocities are happening and it gives authorities around the world a way to track terrorist activity and crack down on it. If it is not on twitter, it is going to be somewhere else. Maybe a site that is harder to go through and track. The more outrage there is individuals and particularly corporations that advertise on twitter and other sites, the more likely the social Media Company is to crack down on some of these images. They are out there, and they are shocking. Jenna that is interesting. The used to follow where these groups are and figure out how to stop it. I can say with some certainty i would bet they are using these social media sites to track and follow terrorists, for sure. Jenna thank you very much.
