The daily mails Political Editor was supposed to be the designated reporter but was told by staffers that he wasnt welcome. Joining us with reaction from New Hampshire ed henry. This is not going over well in reporter circles is it ed . Thats right. Reporters want the press pool the folks out here on the road the actual journalists picking who should cover Hillary Clinton not having the Clinton Campaign dictate to them. In this case the campaign insists theyre not dictating. They say the reporter who is the politics editor for the daily mail basically does not meet the requirements to be a pool reporter. Its complicated. The short of it is they used precedent from the White House Press pool. The daily mail has been petitioning to get into the press pool. They dont have credentials yet. The Clinton Campaign is trying to work it out and bring them at a later date. The other reporters are having a problem with this, why wasnt this reporter let in you fill in for the rest of the group, when the candidates in small quarters you take it down and then share the information with the rest of us. What a lot of people are wondering about is the fact this particular reporter with the daily mail has been very aggressive in his coverage of Hillary Clinton, the campaign tells me tonight that had nothing to do with it. Theyre working it out. Theyll let him into other events down the road. She eventually did take questions from us today. She very rarely does that. Here she is running a populist campaign talking about redistributing wealth saying income inequality is a big problem. Andrea mitchell pressed her about how her and bill clinton made 25 million last year. Im very grateful for the success bill and i have had. We both come from hardworking families. And we have worked really hard both of us over the course of our lives. And we feel blessed. So she tries to push it away by saying she feels grateful. Her staff wouldnt call on me. They had a list of reporters they were going to call on. I was three feet from the candidate. I asked her how she feels about these poll numbers suggesting that a majority believes that she is not honest and trustworthy. She didnt answer t. You can see from the video as i walked over to try to get that question answered her staff didnt want me to talk to her, the secret service asked me to move. This is going to be an on going issue on reporter access. Those are great points. You add into that our factor and staged events with dnc operatives and spontaneous discussions with her. The limited access to reporters, very few questions even when she has taken a couple. Even obama operatives have been saying she needs to get out there and talk to people. They still wont even answer your question. She wants to run a rose garden strategy. From a political standpoint you can understand why she would think its good. If she doesnt have a lot of competition on the democratic side. Theres not a lot of upside to her taking tough questions about the Clinton Foundation or anything else. Long term there are some democrats saying if you dont deal with this now it is only going to keep coming back in the general election. It would be better to address the questions now. Thats the clinton political strategy. As reporters, yong what the political strategy is of democrats or republicans. Were supposed to get tough questions whether its jeb bush or Hillary Clinton. A lot of candidates out there have been taking tough questions. Shes not taking a lot. Shes taking to take more i should point out as i noticed today. A lot better today than other events. Three or four . She took about six or seven. Id have to look at my note book. Not a full press conference and it certainly hasnt happened a lot. Ed henry on the trail in New Hampshire. Appreciate it. This is not the first incident by the Clinton Campaign that angered the press. According to politico the boston globe wrote this after covering hillary the pool is kept in the back yard and did not see clinton walk out and greet a group of neighbors who were across the street. Neighbors neighbors neighbors confirmed this. The pool threw a fit when she heard clinton had left the house. Your pool got outside fast enough to see clinton drive away. Here is that reporter from the boston globe who has been covering the campaign. It seems like she is giving the least amount of access and shes trying to run a populist campaign how does that work . I know it is very confusing. Its not only journalists that are noticing this. Activists are noticing this as well. I spent the weekend in iowa one of the things people were upset about was she had a contest for one person to be able to fly to new york and see her rally. And these iowa activists are saying wait a minute we shouldnt have to enter a contest to see the candidate. We want to see the candidate in our rooms every day. The campaign is beginning to respond to that a little bit. You did see her have an open event. You know i think that those two ideas are at odds. Having a rose garden strategy, and also trying to be of the people. And you can see it now showing up in the polls in New Hampshire. Bernie sanders in the mid30 and in wisconsin in the 40s. I dont think anybody anticipated those numbers for Bernie Saunders . Absolutely. I had a chance to go to a Bernie Sanders event when i was in iowa. More than 700 people were there. And they gave him three Standing Ovations before he even opened his mouth. It was amazing. The Washington Post had a story today, pointing out that while clinton it more headlines this weekend, it was sanders who had more head count at his events. Thank you so much. My three favorite accomplishments that Hillary Clinton has done. I have honestly no idea. Its hard you know its hard for me to pinpoint out the three. Not really. Im sorry. Three, thats a big deal. Well, she ran in 2008 and honorably. So that was a big deal. Um. She ran for president she didnt win. What did she say . She put the cracks in the ceiling . She tried to get the Clinton Healthcare initiative passed that didnt work. Thats a good question. I couldnt tell you the answer. I couldnt tell you anything that shes actually accomplished. And i think the big fight in 2016 is going to be about who is it who actually can successfully challenge the status quo in washington. She is the personification of the professional Political Class. An 80 plus percent of the American People believe the professional Political Class is more focused on its own title and position than getting the right things done. Did you catch the irony that saying their yesterday and their old song called yesterday they believe in yesterday. Im sitting there thinking how long have you been in the public eye now . Even obama supporters from David Axelrod and others they are saying she needs to get out of the bubble. Why do you think shes afraid to get out of the bubble . I dont know. What i would say is if you know that youre going to be the nominee, and i think she knows that then she may not think theres any purpose in exposing herself now. Honestly a fox news poll said 80 plus of the American People think the game is rigged against them by professional politicians. They take that money to spend it on doing aids work in africa and amazing work across the world. I think it makes sense that she has had donations from a wide variety of countries especially given her background with foreign service. Shes not the only one. So Everyone Wants to point fingers. Does it bother me she took money from saudi arabia . I think they all do it. I think it was in good faith. Little shady something is probably going on there. Hopefully everybody has an opportunity to change and do things differently. Maybe she would. You are one of the few that have targeted that as i have. Saudi arabia omom kuwait uae, have atrocious human rights records for women, gay and lesbians. She says shes the champion of these different groups. Meanwhile, shes never uttered a word about how bad these records are. Do they buy her silence you think . Well the thing is is that its so bad in saudi arabia that a woman was raped there by seven men and the woman was publicly whipped. The woman was actually then put in prison for being in the car with an unmarried man. And thats the kind of country and thats the kind of culture that shes taking money from. Its going to be hard for her to run as a candidate for womens rights when shes taking money. She took money from the sultan of brunigh where ary adultery is punished by stoning. I think it is going to be difficult for her. Taking money, if she took it but still took a principal stand, maybe you could give her a pass. I cant find any instance where she has criticized the policy of these countries with these atrocious records. That to me is the it seems like they bought her silence. And i think its even worse than that. Were going to have a race to be commander in chief. Do we want her to be the commander in chief when shes taken money from people she basically presided over the sale of a Uranium Company to the russians while taking money from the shareholders of the Uranium Company. I think that should disqualify her from being a candidate you have a whole lot of reasons, the server benghazi or the 26 million the Clinton Foundation got in sweden while they were petitioning her as secretary of state so they could get an kempexemption so they could do business with iran while everybody else was living by the sanctions in place. And about this time i believe bill clinton gave a speech for that company and got about 700,000 while they were applying for an exemption for the sanctions against iran. Something is really fishy. I think bill clinton got money from a bank that was lobbying over the uranium deal. Theres a lot going on here. Theres an Endless Supply of conflict of interest. Thats why her numbers as far as honesty are upside down. Roosevelt island is a fairly interesting choice to make her announcement. Did you see that . I did see that. With its history i think its interesting. Let me go to jeb bush tonight. Jeb announces he setheis the latest candidate to announce. Obviously does pretty well in some of the polls. Youve been doing well especially in head to head polls against hillary. What do you make of jeb bush . I think the more the merrier. We have a field on the republican side. I think the question will be will we get a conservative candidate or will the candidates divide the vote. Thats the debate weve been having for the last several cycles. We need a strong standard bearer who is a conservative. I can i think we need to be more bold for tax cuts and balancing the budget. Im afraid if we get a Big Government republican that that may be the wrong message. And we may not be separate ourselves so much from Hillary Clinton at that point. Its interesting, Lindsey Graham is getting into the race. I dont think he has a very big chance of winning hes not showing up in the polls. Why do i suspect he might be getting involved in the race to cause trouble in South Carolina . You never know. I think if Lindsey Graham splits the moderate vote with bush maybe a conservative could win South Carolina. I think having another moderate is probably good are for conservatives. Okay. Thal challenge is transparency on basic issues. She doesnt want to seem to go there. The transparency on the Clinton Foundation. There is still more than a thousand they have not disclosed. She could give a press conference but actions speak louder than words. I think shes convinced she can ride it out. Youre taking the position she can ride the way shes going as long as the Campaign Goes on and get away with not answering questions. Shell have to debate at some point. She will have tough questions asked at some point about the server about peters book about ethical issues benghazi. I dont think shes going to have very good answers if shes asked in the right way. She may not. Strategically, this is not the time for her to do it. Shell have to debate when there are not 17 republicans, but perhaps one or two. The other thing is as your interviews suggest the dimensions of Political Choice are not limited to who you think is honest or trustworthy. Otherwise Richard Nixon wouldnt have been elected in 1968. Cand candidly she is making the right decision to stay insulated and to avoid interviews where she has to answer questions. As i freely acknowledged she doesnt have good answers. But the minute she makes a mistake, its all going to come down on her. This is a great strategy as long as you dont make a mistake. Shes going to. And then everybody is going to assume that the two months that she didnt speak, she didnt speak because all she does is make mistakes. So its a high risk strategy. And i dont think she can pull it off. Governor the launch of her campaign until today hasnt been success after success. Shes still leading in the polls. I would draw thats an understatement. Shes leading in the polls against nobody. Even on the republican side youre the one who shes running against jeb who is seng sinking. Youve got 15 other candidates all of whom are in the low to mid 40s. I think if you look at the numbers carefully theyre much worse than you think. When you have a party with 15 candidates and somebody calls the supporter of one of those candidates and says head to head mrs. Clinton versus the other candidate, you dont want to give the other candidate credit. So you cast your telephone vote for mrs. Clinton. And she still is close to most of them. Let me ask this jeb bush launched today. You are close to the father. Are you supporting jeb . I have too many friends in this race. Im trying to stay out of it. It will be a great race. Let me put out a new ad that was put out by marco rubios campaign about Hillary Clinton making the statement the republican candidates are yesterday. Theyre all singing the same old song. A song called yesterday. They believe in yesterday. Yesterday is over. We must change the decisions we are making. By changing the people who are making them. Peter i thought that was a very well done ad perfectly timed. I think it was a good point. The clintons are way beyond yesterday. I think partly what youre seeing in this campaign sean, is this generational shift in change. Weve seen it in american politics before. You could argue this played a roll in 1992 when bill clinton defeated george h. W. Bush. Youre seeing marco rubio younger than jeb bush and Hillary Clinton saying its time for this generational change. Usually those changes take place at a time when the economy is not doing well there is a certain anxiety in the country. You could make a case that we are ripe for a generational shift. You wrote this book about jebs dad, does the bush name hurt him . I think there are pluses to it and there are some folks for whom its a minus.
