Steve . When you look at the scale of this disaster, for the bahamas, it is simply staggering. More than 70,000 people homeless. Thats one out of every five people in the nation. It is amazing when you see the video of some of the destruction in the north. Heres the scene from abaco island. Whatever was here, however many people lived here, where the houses were, where the streets were, as far as you can see, to my left, as far as you can see to my right, its all gone. This was a storm that didnt just rip off roofs. This was a storm that picked things up and smashed them over and over again. Entire neighborhoods, all thats left is junk. Conditions are simply so bad there. No fuel. No food. No medicine. People are doing anything they can to get out, including boarding up private boats. Heres what that scene looks like. This is an all volunteer flotilla, you have people from different parts of the bahamas, arriving on their own private boats, bringing supplies, food and water and taking people off of abaco island, people who are desperate to leave, people who have lost everything. This boat said they can hold 30 people, but no bags. Youre allowed to bring your backpacks. People have been waiting around the clock here at the waters edge hoping to get their families off this island. These boats will eventually go to nassau, people leaving everything they had behind to get on these boats to save their families. The official death toll stands at 43. But weve seen that number rise each day. Jon . Jon what a mess. Steve harrigan, thank you. Meanwhile, President Trump thanking the bahamian Prime Minister for emphasizing the United States help in rescue efforts after Hurricane Dorian left unprecedented damage on its major islands. The coast guard stepping up response efforts as the frantic search for survivors continues. Mark meredith live at the white house with more. Mark . Good evening, jon. President trump says the u. S. Is willing to help the bahamas as they recover from Hurricane Dorian. The president put out a tweet about the storm early this morning. This is what he had to say, quote, thank you to bahamian Prime Minister for your very gracious and kind words in saying that without the help of the United States and me, there would have been many more casualties. The president in that tweet also praised fema as well as the u. S. Coast guard for their efforts to help save lives. Here at the white house, the president has nothing on his public schedule for the weekend, but we know he has his mind focused on the economy and trade talks because hes been talking a lot about that on twitter and in a video released online. Heres what he had to say. Our economy is strong. Our country is great. We have never been in a better position. More people are working today in the United States than at any time in the history of our country. Almost 160 million people. The president s optimism about the economy comes as congress is set to return to washington next week from its summer recess. The debate over potential impeachment is expected to be front and center. A congressman told fox news his fellow democrats should lay out what to expect in the months ahead. I actually think the Judiciary Committee would do everyone a favor if they did provide some order and some structure to these investigations. When we get back next week, theres going to be some real heart to heart conversations that will take place. Now, another investigation appears to already be in the works. Two House Democratic Committee Chairmen sent a letter to the white house friday, demanding answers about Vice President pences decision to stay at a trump property in ireland. They said quote potential violations of the foreign and domestic clauses of the constitution are of grave concern to the committee as it considers whether to recommend articles of impeachment. Now, these lawmakers are demanding documents from the white house about what led into the trip. The president for his part said he had nothing to do with the decision about where the Vice President would stay. Then i heard he was going there, but i didnt it wasnt my idea for mike to go there. Mike went there because his family is there. Thats my understanding of it. Now, some democratic lawmakers say they are also concerned about the possibility that the president could host next years g7 summit at a trump property in florida. However, no final decision has been made, but lawmakers are very upset about that. Jon . Jon mark meredith, thank you. Lawyers for President Trump are asking a federal judge to block House Democrats attempts to force him to turn over his tax records. The house ways and Means Committee ways and Means Committee filed a lawsuit in july to try to get the Treasury Department to comply with their request for six years of the president s personal and business tax returns. But the administration argues the court doesnt have authority over the matter. The 2020 campaign trail leading to New Hampshire this weekend has democratic contenders made their pitch to Granite State voters at the Democratic Party convention. Each candidate hopes to pick up the momentum to win the first in the nation primary. Peter doocy is joining us from manchester, New Hampshire, with more. Peter . Jon, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders both demonstrated today that there might be something to the biden camps concern that warren and sanders have a Home Field Advantage in the first in the nation primary state New Hampshire because they live right next door in neighboring states, and warren and sanders were both able today to parlay that into large enthusiastic crowds of democratic activists. This country this country cannot continue to have a president who is a pathological liar, who even uses his sharpie pen to lie about the direction of a hurricane. How crazy is that . It made sense that sanders and warren got such warm welcomes because they are polling so high. But cory booker was among the best received as well even though he is polling near the back of the pack of debate qualifiers. I asked him why theres such a disconnect . The frontrunner joe biden was one of the first candidates to address activists here. He brought with him the two pillars of his campaign, a laser focus on trump and a slip of the tongue. I believe history will look back at this presidency as a moment in time, but if donald trump is reelected freudian slip if donald trump is reelected, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. Some candidates showed up to speak at the New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention Even though they havent qualified for the up coming debate which makes this one of the last big events, last opportunities for those people that did not qualify for the debate to prove that their campaigns are still viable. Iran announces a new breach of the 2015 Nuclear Agreement as it warns europe there is not much time left, to save the agreement, that President Trump withdrew from last year. Officials say it is to smuggle illicit oil to syria in violation of sanctions. Last night President Trumps National Security advisor tweeted a satellite photo showing an iranian vessel at anchor 2 1 2 miles off a major port in syria. Bolton said quote anyone who said it wasnt headed to syria is in denial. Tehran thinks its more important to fund the murderous assad regime than provide for its own people. We can talk, but iran is not getting any sanctions relief until it stops lying and spreading terror. Today iran also claims it seized another vessel near the strait of hormuz for smuggling fuel. At one point, demonstrators surrounded a Police Station and sparked fires. Authorities reacted by con fronting them in full riot gear. Jonathan hunt is live in hong kong with the latest. Jonathan . Jon, the protesters were smaller in number than we have seen over the past 14 weekends, but they brought with them the same intensity and determination that we have seen over this summer of protests. But the police were determined too. They brought very different tactics. They were very aggressive in charging the groups of protesters, but they were also much more controlled than we have seen in the past. There were no baton charges. There was no use of tear gas that we saw or heard. No rubber bullets fired that we saw or heard. It was a distinct change, and it appeared to be a fairly successful one. Look here what we just witnessed was a clearly very well planned, very well organized move by hundreds of riot police, flooding out from the Police Station and then in squads like this one, chasing the protesters, dispursing them to various corners dispersing them to various corners of this neighborhood. Now, as you can see, they are just holding those corners, making sure the protesters do not gather again. One thing we should point out that was very interesting, we heard one commander clearly in control, clearly not a native hong konger or chinese speaking with a very obvious british accent. We will be checking with the hong kong authorities to see if theyve called in outside help. Now, we reached out to various sources, and what they told us is that there are British Police officers who are members of the Hong Kong Police force, but it would certainly be an irony, jon, to think that it was the brits who handed hong kong back to the chinese in 1997, on the basis of certain freedoms and certain democratic rights being maintained. And there now appear to be British Police officers who are involved in the crushing of protests, which are designed to maintain those precise freedoms and that democracy. Jon . Jon what a story. The centers for Disease Control says five people have died from vapingrelated illnesses and the agency is investigating more than 450 cases nationwide. Regardless, the dangers of vaping are alarming in that otherwise Young Healthy people are coming down with debilitating lungrelated illnesses. All told, there have been 450 cases of supposed vaping related lung illnesses in 33 states. While most of the victims have been young in age Authorities Say all those who died were mature adults ranging from middle age to 65. One was older and suffering from Chronic Health problems. The five deaths occurred in illinois indiana minnesota oregon and the latest in california where los angeles Health Officials said there have been 12 reports of vapingrelated pulmonary injuries. Health officials warn that symptoms include coughing, che pain, shortness of breath, also nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, fever and weight loss. The Los Angeles County department of Public Health takes this threat seriously. And today, were issuing a warning to all residents about the use of these devices as potentially harmful to proper lung function. Ecigarettes or vaping have been sold for about a tech decade for about a decade and touted as healthy alternative to cigarettes. But the illnesses and deaths became known in the last year. The cdc and fda have not confirmed that the deaths and sicknesses are vaping related but other Health Officials can find no other reason. I think what did surprise me a little bit was how severe the reactions were. I mean, people dying and ending up in icus and ventilators by the dozens and now hundreds was surprising. It is going to be tough for the researchers to really try to figure out if theres a single thing or a couple of different compounds that may be causing these problems. Several states are echoing the advice to avoid using ecigarettes. New yorks Health Commissioner sent out a tweet this afternoon, urging new yorkers to stop vaping while federal officials investigate. In march, perdue and members of the family that largely owned the company reached a 270 Million Dollars settlement with oklahoma, to avoid a trial on the toll of opioids there. Hundreds attend a vigil in santa barbara, california, for the 34 People Killed in that boat fire on labor day. This as the owners of the vessel file a lawsuit that they hope will protect them from liability. Christina coleman is reporting live from los angeles. Jon, the owners of the dive boat conception filed in action u. S. District Court Los Angeles this week to limit its liability for the accident using a precivil war provision of maritime law. The ntsb, coast guard, fbi all working hard right now to get to the bottom of this. It is not a criminal investigation at this time, but the Big Questions officials are asking here, how did this awful fire start . And how can a tragedy like this be prevented . The coast guard started the process of salvaging whats left of conception. The dive boat slept 46 in small double bunks about 4 feet wide and just 2 feet high. Santa barbara county sheriff bill brown says there were two possible ways out, but the fire trapped victims below deck. Investigators want to keep as much of the boat intact as possible for the investigation. The vessel is upside down, and so we call that inverted. And so the first step is to gently roll over the vessel with the appropriate rigging equipment and then have that stabilized prior to beginning the raise. As of now, a full report with a probable cause and findings could take up to two years. So what do we know right now . The five crewmembers who survived the fire were stationed on the boats deck and not below it. So they were able to jump off the vessel. The crew reportedly says the flames, smoke and intense heat stopped them from reaching people below deck. The sheriff says the victims had signs of smoke inhalation and that a preliminary examination shows they died before they were burned. Memorials were held to honor those who lost their lives in this tragedy. I have been on this boat. I have a couple friends. I met the captain before and one of the cooks. Yeah, it hit me all week. The ntsb is expected to release a preliminary report in nine days that will cover the basic facts of this investigation, but its not expected to reveal any major conclusions. Jon . Jon christina coleman, christina, thank you. An American Airlines mechanic is accused of sabotaging a flight over stalled Union Contract negotiations. On july 17th, a flight from miami to the bahamas was aborted when Pilots Received an error message right before take off. They later discovered someone had tampered with the planes navigation system. The employee told authorities he did not intend to harm the aircraft or the 150 people on board. We are nearing the bottom of the hour, if you are just joining is communities in the bahamas are still coming to grips with the utter devastation left behind by Hurricane Dorian with a long and difficult recovery ahead. Officials have confirmed 43 dead so far, but they expect that number will increase sharply in the coming days. The United Nations also estimates more than 70,000 bahamians were left homeless, near a fifth of that countrys population. And with wind speeds of 150 milesanhour, dorian becomes the second strongest atlantic hurricane in the past 150 years. Dorian also did a great deal of damage on u. S. Soil, particularly in North Carolina. We will have a live report from there coming up later this hour. Theres a donald trump rally are an event in themselves and were looking forward to it. Were surging in the polls. Weve had a great week or so, and we think the president being here and the Vice President , by the way, on monday, will put us over the top on tuesday. Jon thats North Carolina republican congressional candidate dan bishop sounding off on his up coming rally with President Trump next week ahead of tuesdays highstakes special election. It is expected to be a close finish. With bishop and his democratic opponent dan mccready running pretty much neckandneck in recent polling. Here to talk about it, David Hawkings, editorinchief of the fulcrum. We have some numbers we can put up on the screen, bishop versus mccready. They show bishop at 42 . Mccready at 46 . Theres more than 4 point margin of error. So this you know, those two numbers could flip. This thing is essentially a tie right now. Thats right. It is a tie. And that is pretty interesting given that this was a district that President Trump won by 12 Percentage Points in 2016. So the fact that the president is essentially making this election all about him and mr. Bishop as we just heard is happy for that to be the case, its pretty interesting gamble for the president and for the republicans to see whether, you know, this is the first election in a sense of the 2020 campaign, the First Federal election so its obviously going to be perceived by both sides as a test of the president s strength going in to 2020. North carolina is one of the states thats going to be one of the big tossup hardfought states in the country next year, so a huge deal. Jon right. This is an election thats going to have reverberations all the way to the white house and beyond. You know, absolutely and beyond. So as i say, this is 2020, going to be in North Carolina, it will be a big tossup. If mr. Mccready wins, it had been a sign that president could be in trouble. If mr. Mccready loses, it could be interpreted by the democrats, mccready is an iraq war vet. Hes also a solar investor. You know, the republicans are trying to portray him as really really to the left. Should he lose, it might give the democrats some pause about nominating people who could be portrayed as this far to the left. You know, both sides are going to game this. It is only one election. Those of us in the political reporting business tend to overdo it by putting too much import in these elections, but thats what we do. Jon the president who won this district by 12 points goes down there and rallies his faithful, that can only help bishop; right . Well, right, it will help bishop. Presumably it is going to get bishops people and the president s people out. The question of course is whether the same rally and, you know, so infuriates and energizes the Democratic Base that they come out too. This is a weird district and very interesting district demographically. Its got a lot of suburban charlotte in it. These are the kind of suburban voters that are the most fought after by both sides. So the question is does the president s appearance the night before the election get more of his own people to the polls or many of his opponents to the polls . Jon it is a critical election really for both parties. When you look at the retirements in the congressional session now ending, 21 republicans are calling it quits after this term in congress. Only five democrats. So if republicans have any hope of taking back the house, theyre going to need seats like that one that dan bishop is running for. That is exactly right, and not only that, but if mr. Bishop loses after the president comes in at the last minute for him, what does that say to other republicans who just hung on in the democratic wave of last year . You know, how many republicans who are facing really tough races next year, how many more republicans will say this is not going to be my year, i may as well go out on my own terms. Does the retirement wave accelerate if bishop loses . Thats an important story line to watch. Jon some controversies in the Republican Party right now where there are four states some of the early states where they have cancelled state primaries. I mean, there are i mean President Trump is facing some challenge challengers. He calls them the three stooges. They probably arent strong challengers but nevada arizona kansas and South Carolina have cancelled their primaries and South Carolina has a favorite son who wants to challenge the president. South carolina did it just today. Kansas is doing it. The other two were expecting it will happen. Yes, thats right, mark sanford, the former governor, two time congressman down there looks likely to mount a challenge. You know, the question its not this is not unprecedented. But it is almost always been the case that when the incumbent president is running for reelection and president ial primaries on his side are cancelled, its because the president has almost no opposition at all. This is a little bit more than that. Yes, the president calls them the three stooges. But together, could they chip away at his 90 support in the Republican Base . Still plausible. It is also sort of a historical fact worth noting that every time in modern politics where a president has faced a memorable primary challenger, of course they have never succeeded in knocking off an incumbent president in a primary, but every time an incumbent president has faced a serious challenge, hes gone on to lose in the fall. This is presumably an insurance policy the president s side thinks to make it even less likely that these meddlesome challengers will get in his way. Jon one of those challengers joe walsh former congressman and now talk radio host put out this tweet. This isnt north korea. This isnt russia and it is wrong only being done to protect the emperor. You have to assume the democrats if this were a situation where it would be president obama running for reelection and primaries getting cancelled on his side that people like joe walsh and plenty of other republicans youve got to at least ask yourself would they be putting out similarly emphatic statements . Jon Hurricane Dorian is still heading north tonight after causing catastrophic flooding in North Carolina. The storm stranded residents and vacationers in the outer banks and elsewhere and cut power. Jonathan serrie is in emerald isle North Carolina with the latest. Im standing in front of the remnants of an rv park. This park was hit not by hurricaneforce winds when the eye was passing by but a day before the hurricane made landfall by a twister, in particular a waterspout that came ashore during one of the feeder bands as dorian was approaching. In this park, the twister damaged 62 Residential Structures and five businesses. Earlier today, North Carolina governor roy cooper toured the damage by helicopter and on the ground, while acknowledging the extent of the damage, he commended the people on their resilience and their generosity. Off the coast, First Responders are shuttling supplies to ocracoke island. This is a Remote Community with no bridges to the mainland. An estimated 800 residents chose not to follow evacuation orders during the hurricane, a 7 foot storm surge caused significant flooding. The coast guard medevaced three ocracoke residents who were experiencing health problems. Also transported an additional three who simply wanted to leave the island. Throughout the storm, Power Outages was a major problem. Yesterday they peaked at somewhere over 200,000 customers without electricity. That figure is now down to below 48,000. Utility crews making progress restoring electricity. But in these hardhit areas, its obviously going to take considerably longer. Back to you, john. Its been upgraded yet again back to a category 2 storm as it churns in Eastern Canada even causing a crane to collapse in halifax. Accuweather meteorologist has been tracking dorian all the way. Yeah, we are talking about some pretty serious weather here as we think that the storm itself would have been dissipating by this point, but not so much, as you can see, up by nova co shah, this power scotia, this powerhouse storm continues, the winds are final gaining the speed and momentum. You can see those storm, you know, repercussions really being felt here, and of course the wave action up to 30 plus feet across the atlantic ocean. So now the impacts here going across halifax, new brunswick, up towards corner brook here, newfoundland, we are looking at the impacts to be on the high side with storm surge and a great deal of wave action, but finally, after it seems to be days and days and days that we have been seeing this storm kind of pound the east coast and now getting up and out to sea, eventually, but even still, a cat 1 hurricane is possible here as we head into your sunday morning wakeup, into newfoundland here. That will be the big impact as we roll forward. As it gets into cooler waters, it will eventually diminish here into monday morning but to think how long this storm has been going on. Its not just dorian, though. Keep in mind, we have the entire atlantic here that continues to be pretty active. So these are other zones, gabriel there, good news, diminishing as the storm itself. Tropical wave to the south. And then we also have other tropical waves here coming in off the african coast, and that will continue to bring in those waves. The question is how it kind of unravels as we head forward. It is going to be a busy stretch. Despite the fact that the parliament rejected his last plea earlier in the week for an election. Now, opposition parties of course normally welcome new elections, that is after all their way of getting into power. Whats going on . Well, they are concerned if there is an election next month, the conservatives and british Prime Minister will win it and use that mandate to ignore a law they have passed forcing him to extend negotiations with eu if he doesnt reach a temporary trade deal with their biggest trading partner by the deadline of october the 31st. That said, Boris Johnson may ignore the law anyway. In an interview today with the daily telegraph, the Prime Minister said hes only bound by that law in theory. Johnson has long said the country will leave the eu by the end of october, doordie, and this week, he said hed rather die in a ditch than ask the eu for an extension. Boris johnson is set to meet with eu leaders on the 17th of october, two weeks before the brexit deadline. Several members of Parliament Say they will go to court to force him to follow the new law and ask for that extension at that meeting. If he doesnt, he could in theory be in contempt of court and in theory at least go to jail. Meanwhile, outside parliament, groups for and against brexit were out demonstrating today with some of the group of protesters for getting into a scuffle with the police. I can tell you, that kind of thing is very rare here, despite all of the political division, most people generally speaking are pretty civil on the street. Brexit is clearly putting a strain on that.
