Havent seen it before. Look what happened to them, they sabotaged six tankers, and we caught them at it, indisputable evidence. They backed away from that, they shot down an american drone, tactical commander did it without authorization. The president , as opposed to taking a kinetic response, didnt do that. That helped unite the International Community with us. Connell Lucas Tomlinson picks up reporting this evening from the pentagon. Lucas . Reporter secretary of state mike pompeo spoke in ecuador earlier today where he said the u. S. Is willing to speak to iran if it stops its provocations in the persian gulf which has escalated over the past two months. The Iranian Regime has to make a decision that it wants to behave like a normal nation. And if they do that, were prepared to negotiate across a Broad Spectrum of issues with no preconditions. I hope that they will do that, but today we have seen no indication cans that the iranians are prepared to fundamentally change the direction of their nation. Reporter Iranian State tv aired this video showing revolutionary guard forces fast roping down a helicopter onto the deck of that british oil tanker. Last week a Royal British navy war boat blocked three gun boats from doing the same thing to another tanker. Authorities said it was carrying oil to syria, in violation of the sanctions. The pentagon announced hundreds more u. S. Trooped would deploy to saudi arabia for the first time in 16 years including fighter jets like these sent to the region in june. A pate on the antimissile battery will also be deployed. There are currently 70,000 u. S. Troops deployed in the u. S. Uss boxer passed through the same area in the strait of hormuz and destroyed an iranian drone using this jamming device strapped to deck without firing a shot, a new addition to u. S. Arsenal if. Policy advisers spoke to Catherine Herridge earlier in the day. I did worry about the risk of a miscalculation. Iran has taken a number of provocative steps, a number of serious military steps in the past few weeks that have caused us some concern. Weve had a longstanding set of concerns about irans behavior, its export of militancy, support for terrorism, arbitrary detention of americans, pursuit of nuclear capabilities, longrange missiles. Reporter iran continued to hold a uae tanker as well as five american hostages, and officials tell me iran has over 2,000 ballistic missiles. Connell Lucas Tomlinson live at the pentagon. Now to Something Else, weather. Millions of americans are dealing with dangerously high temperatures this weekend across almost the entire country. We have just a blanket of heat, its smothering dozens of states and really theres still a ways go before we get a break as we bring in meteorologist williams with his forecast. It is downright dangerous for many people, paul. Reporter downright dangerous, indeed. In fact, so dangerous that folks in the east, midwest, theyre dealing with the kind of conditions that, well, you typically would deal with in the deep south. Take a look, excessive heat warnings in indianapolis, chicago, louisville, st. Louis, kansas city and wichita, kansas, but not just there, along the east coast. Portions of new york, philadelphia, washington, d. C. As well as richmond. Keep in mind for the rest of this evening were looking for sweltering conditions to continue, but were also seeing scattered showers and thunderstorms running amok along a good portion of the Great Lakes Region and the Northern Tier or slice of the ohio valley region, thunderstorms that will possibly turn severe, possibly producing opportunities for isolated tornadoes. Why . Because when we have so much heat and amidst all of that instability, its not only bad as far as dealing with the heat, but the combination of these storms, thats a big nono. For sunday this cold front begins to push throughout the northeast and the ohio valley region, but were anticipating a chance of rain to possibly give us a break, not going to happen during the daytime hours. We will still have this heat lingering in a major way. Were accepting the realfeel temperatures to hover between 105110 from boston to philly and along the entire i95 corridor. Bear in mind were looking for temperatures to skyrocket to 10 degrees above the norm for this time of year, feeling like 110. Heatrelated illnesses will be on the rise and likely to occur. And even throughout the overnight period were looking for little to no relief. Throughout the deep south, staying stormy. Throughout the Tennessee Valley region and portions of the deep south, but for monday as this front begins to push through, were looking for a chance of flooding down 30urs. The heat, even after we get the relief of from the front, because its been so hot, well have a residual effect that could turn into flooding going into monday. So, connell, even if we get rid of the heat, we still have a problem with, believe it or not, too much rain. Connell its always something, right . We figure wed just get to monday, that was the goal for many people. But then you have Something Else to deal with. Paul, thanks a lot. For many people, most people around the country those conditions have left them struggling to keep cool. Here in new york city officials actually canceled a number of Outdoor Events due to the scorching temperatures. President ial candidate bill de blasio says new yorkers need to be on high alert. I want to emphasize that everyone this is a very, very difficult situation. Everyones got to take it seriously. This is a potentially dangerous weather situation for a number of new yorkers. We have not seen temperatures like this in at least seven years. We havent seen this many concentrated hot days in a long, long time. Connell Jacqui Heinrich joins us from the streets of new york now. How are people, i guess including yourself, coping with all this today . Reporter well, com, so far so good. There were some concerns that Record Energy demand would put a strain on the citys power grid. A state of emergency is in effect, and the Power Company actually called in an additional 4,000 employees. But other states have not fared quite as well. More than 200 million americans across 32 states are under heat wave advisories and could face heat indexes over 100 degrees with realfeel temperatures above 115. High humidity and poor air quality are also adding to risk. In philadelphia a retirement home was evacuated after the building lost power. Scorching temperatures being blamed for six deaths in three states including a man who was repairing an air conditioner in an attic in arizona. Also four people in maryland and former new york giants defensive lineman died of heatstroke in arkansas. The 32yearold had been outside working in his familys shop. In new york temperatures are expected to topple a sevenyear record. The mayor issued an executive order for tall Office Buildings to set their thermostats no lower than 78 degrees to protect the power grid. People are flocking to the public spaces with airconditioning, this library serving as one of the citys 500 cooling centers. Outdoor events, a times square commemoration of the moon landing and the new york city triathlon were canceled. I mean, everybodys miserable it looks like, people Walking Around with towels on their heads. I prefer snow over, like, really intense heat like this, yes. I see water and im, like, should i run through that . Reporter in washington, d. C. The peak heat index is expected to reach 111 degrees. Zoo animals are being fed ice, others periodically hosed off, and in boston temperatures are expected to linger above the 1 is 00 mark 100 mark until the weekend is over. Excessive heat kills more people than floods or tornadoes each year. Experts are saying you really have to stay indoors. Good options are movie theaters, shopping malls, places with airconditioning and, of course, stay hydrated, and that means avoiding caffeine and alcohol. Connell yep, thats the key. Its serious for a lot of people. Jacqui heinrich here in new york. Now this. We brought this case before a federal grand jury here in cincinnati which has returned the indictment saying that barkley, the pharmacist, and unnamed pharmacies also all detailed in the indictment did agree they were going to violate the controlled substances act. Attorney for the Southern District of ohio said other communities were impacted as well. I do believe that it is incumbent upon us as the department of justice to insure that justice is done regardless of whether the person is dealing at the street level or enabling it in a boardroom. Reporter in a separate case on friday, two attorneys argued Drug Companies violated laws requiring them to report suspicious orders of opioids and not ship them. Attorneys claim that from 20032011 the generic drug Company Provided more than 37,000 orders as we peculiar lu only held back 33 orders. All of the companies accused in the case are denying the claims and say there is no evidence they illegally pushed opioids onto the market which helped create this crisis. There will be a lot of eyes on this trial in october because nearly 2,000 cities and counties across the country have filed suit against the drug industry. And this case will be the first to go to trial. Connell . Connell Garrett Tenney in washington for us. In the meantime, the Justice Department began releasing more than 3,000 inmates on friday. Connell 50 years ago today history was made in space as apollo 11 landed on the moon. Neil armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. The historic event changed the future of Space Exploration, and buzz aldrin who was right behind armstrong that day reflected on the moment earlier today. It was a magnificent tribute to all of humanity and especially to United States. To be able to carry out this sort of a challenge. And yet as i looked around, nothing could be more desolate than the moon. Connell casey e Casey Steagall live at the Johnson Space center with more on what has been some day. Casey. Reporter some day, indeed. You might note a Little Something behind me. This is the saturn 5 rocket. Now, nasa calls it their heavylifting vehicle because it was designed to carry man to moon. In fact, it has the capability of carrying ten school buses and sending it into the earths orbit, and it can travel some 6,000 miles per hour. Just a little piece of history that weve been able to get up close and personal and see today here at Johnson Space center. Earlier in the day we had unprecedented access. Youve got to see this. We had a chance to go inside the Mission Operational control room. And if only those walls could talk. It was really the nerve center for the apollo 11 mission and other space flights. It was decommissioned in the early 90s and just underwent a 5 million restoration. Everything inside, look at this, exactly as it was 50 years ago down to pin sells, the ashtrays, the coffee cups, the flight logs. Almost as if time had stood still. Nasas staff poured through hundreds of photos to make sure every one of those artifacts was placed cently. And for the man who correctly. And for the man who ran the show, flight director gene krantz, well, he said it not only flooded him with so many members, but its also important as we look forward listen. The restoration of Mission Control is, i think, a key mark in the milestones of the space program, because it is now a device, method, an organ by which we can bring our young people in here and say people made great things. They made decisions. This is the leadership laboratory. You can learn from just sitting in this room and absorbing it and then Going Forward and cutting your own path. Reporter clearly, a lot has changed over the last 50 years. Probably most notably would be the technology. Believe it or not, there is more power and there is more technology in your smartphone that many of us carry nowadays than all of the computers inside that Mission Control room that got men to and back home from the moon safely. Listen here. They sent me back to queens [laughter] and im happy to be the here. Once you start telling american citizens to, quote, go back to your own countries, this tells you that this president s policies are not about immigration, its about ethnicity and racism. Former Vice President joe biden in las vegas, as you mentioned, meeting with supporters and taking aim at the president and his supporters from that North Carolina rally ellison told us about earlier in the week and chanting send her back, referring to congresswoman ilhan omar. When has the president of the United States ever said anything like that . As i said before, this guys a lot more George Wallace than george washington. It really is not good. And guess what . Our kids are listening. Our children are listening. Reporter biden was hardly alone in bashing the president , its become a popular talking point on the trail. Most Democratic Candidates on the stump in the past few days have condemned as racist the president and his chanting supporters. Beto to orourke joining that chorus, also focusing on health care. The ability for everyone to be able to receive that care in an a affordable way while still preserving choice and rejecting this premise that you can either have the status quo, the Affordable Care act, or you can have medicare for all, singlepayer system. Theres a better path. Reporter Bernie Sanders also in iowa, hes been on the defensive about his Campaign Workers pay. As for policies, today sanders discussed his plans to expand Social Security. They are angry. We are on the front lines right now [speaking spanish] the governors mansion, and there are thousands of people that have showed up over the last eight days to protest, asking him to resign. And we spoke to one of the protesters, 21yearold nicole morales, who was here first thing this morning. She said after she saw all those Text Messages from the governor and his 11 aides mocking Hurricane Maria victims, she just had to come out here. My great grandmother died after maria. You know . And its hard, and he doesnt understand that because he was here. He had water. He had food. Puerto rico is broken right now. Its broken. And theres only a Little People that are on his side. Despite all of the majority of the people on this island asking him to resign, hes tweeting and instagraming messages as though it is business as usual. He says hes not leaving until they can prove hes done something illegal or corrupt. Hes apologized for the, quoteunquote, improper acts. But the bottom line is that most of the Democratic Candidates have spoken out against him and asked for him to resign including Representative Tulsi Gabbard from hawaii who was the only one who showed up on the island and is with the protesters tonight. Connell President Trump with tough talk for iran following its seizure of a british oil tanker. Im Connell Mcshane in for jon scott. This is the fox report, were just past the bottom of the hour, so we recap our top story on iran. Its released dramatic new video reportedly showing commandos in black sky masks and ski masks taking control of that tanker in the strategic strait of hormuz. Lets bring in Judith Miller in, a pulitzer prizewinning journalist and author and on top of all that, a fox news contributor. Judy, good to see you here on a saturday. Its almost every day of the week that we have some news on iran. The seizing of this tanker being the latest development. Whats all this leading up to, do you think . Well, i think what the iranians would like it to lead up to is some kind of rearrangement with the Trump Administration. What iran really desperately wants is those sanctions that President Trump imposed in 2018 soon after he came into office, they want those sanctions lifted. Because those sanctions are crippling the iranian economy, making life impossible for the islamic republic. So iran is deliberately upping the ante, going after british ships, going after shipping in the gulf, in the strait of hormuz where 30 of the worlds oil transits in order to get the worlds attention and to force some kind of rearrangement. I dont know if this is going to work. So far President Trump is playing it very cool, but in the iranian mind he is the one who started this by walking away from the agreement which iran had signed with the Obama Administration to limit its nuclear capabilities. So here we are at a very dangerous moment in the gulf. Connell yeah, everybody agrees on that. What they dont agree on, as you know, is how do we, the United States, best respond to this, assets being deployed to the region now. I want to play some comments from a pentagon official today, the undersecretary of defense, he talks about some of the concerns people have with that strategy. Here he is. I do worry about the risk of a miscalculation. Iran has taken a number of provocative steps, a number of serious military steps in the past few weeks that have caused us some concern. Weve had a longstanding set of concerns about irans behavior, its export of militancy, its support for terrorism, arbitrary detention of americans, pursuit of nuclear capabilities, longrange missiles. Connell want to go to that first point, concern of miscalculation, judy. Just by the pure math of it, as you send more assets to a region, doesnt the the odds of something wrong happening go up. Absolutely. Those assets become more vulnerable with each added asset. I mean, that is exactly what iran wants. It wants to up the ante right now. Part of the iranian government also seems to want negotiation with the Trump Administration which President Trump has said hes willing to start without precondition. The problem is the supreme leader, khamenei, doesnt seem to want that, or at least thats what he says at the moment. And half of the Republican Guard doesnt seem to want that, the part thats led by sulemani, who is the head of the elite forces of that guard. So its very there are many conflicting signals being sent by the iranian government right now. But so far President Trump is playing it low key. Connell he is, he is. And most of the people close to president say the last thing he wants is a war in this region. But complicating absolutely. Connell not the United States versus iran oneonone by any stretch of the imagination, these tankers or this tanker tonight is a british tanker, and i want to bring a tweet up and put it on the screen from Great Britain and the foreign minister there, jeremy hunt. It says he just spoke to Iranian Foreign minister zarif, expressed sheer disappointment that iran has behaved in this way. This has to be about actions, not words if were to find a way through. Then he ends, british shipping and will be protected. But for Great Britain, the timing here is such that i wonder how theyll deal with it. I believe its next week that theresa may, the Prime Minister, is expected to resign there, and we might have a Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the not so distant future or somebody else. How does that play into all this . Well, this is precisely why this is the worst moment for the british right now, because they are in the middle of this government transition. Jeremy hunt has also sent mixed signals, if i may say so. On one hand he says he doesnt want military action to resolve this. On the other hand, you know, hes talking about taking this to United Nations and, quote, serious consequences if iran does not release the 23 members of the crew. None of whom is a british national. But they, too, are sending signals. Look, the United States wants what its trying to do is put together an International Coalition of forces that will escort ships through the gulf. But so far our allies have been unwilling to go along with that in part because there is no great love for President Trump, and theres not a lot of trust in what his, hes contemplating. But i think the iranians, my concern right now is the iranians may very well miscalculate the lengths to which President Trump is willing to go if hes accused of being weak in the gulf. Connell miscalculation in one way, shape or form seems to be everyones large concern. Judy, thanks for your analysis. Judith miller. Still ahead, honoring an american milestone. Thats one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind. Connell we will speak with a former nasa astronaut about the legacy of apollo 11 and the future of americans in space. I cant tell you who i am or what i witnessed, but i can tell you Liberty Mutual customized my Car Insurance so i only pay for what i need. Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Only pay for what you need. Apollo 11 landing on the moon in this day in 1969 with astronaut Neil Armstrong becoming the first human being to set foot on the lunar surface. Tom jones, a former nasa astronaut himself and and also author of a book called skywalking an astronauts memoir. Its great to have you on a day like this, tom, thanks very much for coming on. Its probably best to start with your own reflections on that day. Where were you july 20th of 1969 . What do you remember about it . Great memories, connell, thanks for asking. I was on a family camping trip all the way across the country with my baltimore family, and we were camping with no tv, and i implored my parents that night of the landing to get us to a motel so we could watch it on television, watch the moon walk. Really we got to enjoy the moon walk and stayed up late to see that. And i think at that moment, i said thats the kind of career i want to have. I want to follow in the footsteps of neil and mike and buzz. Connell so you were inspired that day. Whats remarkable is you were almost one of the almost no one in the country didnt see it on television, you know . In this business we appreciate that more than most, i guess, but it was Something Like 90 some odd percent of the country saw the moon landing. You would never see numbers like that. You had to do a little extra work to get to that tv. Well, i had forgiving parents, understanding parents who knew how enthusiastic i was about the space program. Connell i want to talk about the program, if we can, for a few minutes. I thought that the Vice President in his remarks earlier today made some news in talking about the future. So lets listen to what he had to say, and then i want to get your thoughts on it. Heres Vice President pence. It is americas destiny to be the leader amongst nations on our adventure into the great unknown. America will return to the moon within the next five years, and the next man and the first woman on the moon will be american astronauts. [applause] connell there are all kinds of debates and discussions, as you know, that could be set up by those remarks in the community youve been part of, should it be mars first instead of the moon, do you go to moon first, then mars, do you cut off government Space Exploration altogether and let private companies handle it. First of all, what do you think of the Vice President saying, hey, were going back to moon in five years . I think that the administrations push for returning to the moon is a good move. Its close enough to us in terms of distance, you can get there in three days or so, and we can operate there with frequency. We can get there back and forth with relatively little time lost. Mars is a 69 month oneway trip just to get to that planet, and we dont have the technological answers yet to how we get to sustain a crew on the surface of mars. The moon is a proving ground, a training area, a classroom for us to learn the techniques we need to get to mars. And i think the Vice President s also right about getting us to moon quickly. That energizes the space agency, it creates an urgency about solving the problem, and thats often an easier way to succeed than stretching things out. I think this is a good thing to light a fire under nasa. If we give nasa the extra resources we need to fly their new orion spacecraft in the next year or two, then well be on the right steps to get an outpost on the moon. We have to watch out for china ahead of us too. Connell is that a motivating factor that kind of makes the case for the cost . Thats always been the argument for going back maybe not 50 years, but at least 40 to say, boy, this stuffs expensive. I read this morning that nasas budget, as a percentage of the u. S.
