Before, he delegated to me when he came in on tactical positions he did not delegate one ounce of strategic decision, and i think once he really did come in with very different courses of action to collect his thoughts, how hes going to explain it to the american people. Rich edson is reporting from bedminster, new jersey, near the president s golf club. Rich, what do we expect to hear from the president tomorrow . Reporter rob, the Trump Administration has been debating troop levels in afghanistan. The white house will discuss the path forward in south asia and afghanistan, in the administrations deliberations have been discussions of potentially adding 4,000 additional troops to the 8,000, more than 8,000 that are already there. Withdraw or supplant some u. S. Forces with security contractors. The top democrat on the Senate ForeignRelations Committee opposes adding troops to afghanistan. Should we put more military in . Again, this is not the u. S. Fight. I dont believe putting more american soldiers in afghanistan is the answer. We really do need to work to fill the void so voids are not created, so that theres opportunity for afghanistan to have a stable central government. Reporter others like senator Lindsey Graham argue the United States should send more troops to solidify the country and solidify the government there. Also part of these discussions, pakistan. Neighboring pakistan and whether the u. S. Should further press that government crack down on terrorists and extremist sanctuaries within the borders, rob . Well talk about the afghan war and what we might hear coming up in a minute. The president is heading to arizona this week and might not be welcome, right . Reporter not by the mayor, the democratic mayor of phoenix asked the president not to come there. This is a state arizona that the president s that had his differences with, the two republican senators there. He recently called out senator john mccain for his vote against advancing the health care bill. Also senator flake has criticized the president. He wrote a book that questioned the president s conservatism, criticiz criticized him on immigration. He tweeted it was a nonfactor in the senate, adding he is toxic. He talked up flakes primary challenger. He won by four percentage points, rob . Rich, thank you so much. Live from new jersey. Okay, joining me now by phone, fox news military analyst colonel david hunt. Thank you for joining us tonight. What do you think were going to hear tomorrow in this address . Probably my bet is a troop increase, anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000. 3,000 to 6,000 more troops, that is a significant increase considering how many we have on the ground now there. Is the move to inundate this area and take care of this as fast as possible . I imagine he wants to get out of afghanistan. I dont think 3,000 to 6,000 soldiers is going to do anything, weve been there 16 years. How many on the ground right now is. About 8,000. The problem is afghanistan taken back, 40 of afghanistan in the last four years back to the taliban and partly isis. They say its a war were losing, right . Thats pretty much the consensus now is that were not winning this war . After 16 years, id say absolutely right. Were not just winning not just afghanistan, the war on terror were not doing. Were not doing a world war, u. S. Cant be doing this itself. After 16 years of trying to do something the same way. Adding great soldiers to this will not be the answer, has not been the answer for 16 years. Its not the answer, what do you think the answer should be . You dont want to pull out and accept the defeat, do you . Im not suggesting pull out. We can leave 1,000 to 5,000 soldiers to fight terrorism fight and help train, but weve got 65 million refugees in the world. 25 million are kids. Statesponsored terror and you have countries that are unstable like libya and like syria and like iraq that are without getting at those bigger issues, afghanistan cannot be won the way were doing it. Youre going to hear more troop increase but has to be a change in how we fight the war on terror. Killing more terrorists is not the answer. Weve killed them by the thousands. Getting to roost the cause of extremism, the same conversation with isis, how to beat that as well. Let me ask you about this idea to privatize this war, to get troops out of this, to make this private. Obviously, the president is a businessman, he might like an idea like that. What do you think of that idea . Terrible, were not the French Foreign legion. Absolutely cannot do it, should not delegate that, there are controls over the u. S. Military, one of the best in the world. Privatizing it causes problems. Weve had issues with this when we turned over our security. Look, do i worldwide security, its a lot of money, but as far as hiring private contractors to handle, and we do some of it already with security, but not as an army, its a big mistake. I dont imagine mattis would go for an idea like that either . As a fourstar general with combat experience, no, its not a good idea to do that. Colonel, thank you so much for your insight on the phone. Appreciate it. Youre welcome. Tune in monday night to see President Trumps address to the nation laying out the path forward for the u. S. In afghanistan. That is scheduled for 9 00 p. M. Eastern time, right here on the fox news channel. All right, switching gears now and the world loses a legend of laughter. Iconic funny man and philanthropist jerry lewis has died. Career spanning the entire history of show business in the 20th century. At the age of 20 he joined forces with dean martin. The pair striking hollywood gold with partnership martin and lewis. Lewis explained why his act with dean martin was so successful. It could never be duplicated because the time, it was as though two people, it was as though two people said lets find the right time to do this, and we just fell into that wonderful abyss of uncertainty, and we realized after about six months we were touching the hearts of the audience. Lewis labor of love for telethons for muscular dystrophy helping to raise more than a billion dollars for that cause. His publicist says he died at the age of 91. Will carr joins me from los angeles. Will, how did jerry lewis die . Reporter rob, according to his manager lewis died peacefully at home with family by his side. He was a tremendously gifted, funny and at times controversial comedian. Once called the mozart of humor. Jerry lewis shot to fame when he teamed up with dean martin for comedy and music act. He went onto successful solo career starting in nutty professor and the bellboy. Younger generations may remember him for being a humanitarian, hosting the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon every Labor Day Weekend from 1966 to 2010. Over that span, he helped raise 2. 6 billion. The mda chairman releasing a statement which reads in part and comedian Penn Jillette tweeting rob . That is something else. What when is the last time we heard from jerry lewis . Reporter we believe the last Television Interview he gave was in december of last year with the hollywood reporter. Lewis was terse and suffice to say less than friendly. What do you think drives people like you and them to want to keep working . Because we do it well. Reporter how do you keep the material fresh for yourself . By working at it. Reporter good advice, lewis was known for being difficult over the course of his career and politically outspoken, but Lasting Legacy will be steeped into the laughs he created over the decades. Decades and decades and the telethon from 1966 to 2010. That is something. For more on the death of jerry lewis, well go to actor robert davi joining us via skype. Thank you so much for coming on here. Talk a little bit about jerry lewis, you were a couple generations ahead of him, he made a major impact you on, right . Absolutely. First id like to say, rob, my condolences and compassion to the family and friends and the fans, nina martin is a friend of mine, she is heart broken by this. Jerry lewis was iconic figure for me as a child growing up. There are few figures, dean martin, Frank Sinatra and jerry lewis. The three entertainment figures that beside Marlon Brando that impelled me or compelled me to want to become an entertainer. The martinlewis team, to put it in perspective because you didnt do it here. There was no bigger act in show business than the martin and lewis act. It would be as if the beatles arrived when. Frank sinatra. Jerry lewis was the franc sinatra of comedy. As sinatra was inundated in music and music translated around the world, so did jerry lewis. Jerrys comic genius, comedy, American Comedy doesnt transfer out of america, sometimes it doesnt because of the bare voice. Lewis had the slap stick ability. He was amazing director. He invented techniques or used techniques invented in new ways, stuff that had been there but not used the way he used it and when he directed films. His humanitarian contribution to the world in terms of muscular dystrophy as you know was barring none, and its a great loss because it closes a chapter almost. We had two great losses, dick gregory, the great comedian and Justice Warrior who was able to deal with stuff through humor, not violence. We mourn his loss. Jerry had the quality. A very good interview that raymond deroyio did, one of the last big interviews that you should show clips of that, quite revealing. He was the abbott of the friars club the last several years. Let me ask you real quick, jerry lewis, when you watched him on the screen, its been actually wonderful to learn a lot more about somebody who was quite frankly way before my time today. He played such a goof ball on the screen, and such a character, but comedy is hard. Anybody in show business will tell you that. You got to be smart to do comedy right, and despite the character he put on the screen, this is a very intelligent man that really knew the craft . He was a total professional. Like i said, he wrote he was an otor. He was nominated for a global peace prize for work with muscular dystrophy. His genius as a comic genius and who he inspired, countless comedians who have been inspired by jerry lewis and his comic genius. Again, it goes bar none his contribution. Just expansive. Its such a loss. Yeah, yeah. Certainly is. Well never see that kind of thing again. Certainly sounds like he made an impact you on, hes from newark, new jersey, youre from queens. That was a big part of it. When i was a kid we had the jerry lewis special, i used to slick my hair back like he did with brill cream. He was a big influence, comic timing, ability to mine, to orchestrate robert, thank you so much for coming on. We do appreciate it. And well keep in touch. Thank you so much. All right, right now as we move on, the search for a suspect in the spain terror attacks ramping up as we learn the terrorists may have had a much bigger plan in mind. Were the tenneys and were usaa members for life. Rob all right, it is a moment more than 90 years in the making. A total Solar Eclipse is said to descend on the continental United States, and its the first coasttocoast Solar Eclipse in 99 years. Almost 100 years the path of totality passing from oregon and moving across the country headed to South Carolina, people are traveling across the nation to get a better look at this rare phenomena. I know a lot of eclipse enthusiasts are able to get on a cruise or airplane and go to exotic destinations but were excited because not only do we see the totality from our own country but whole nation gets to share the experience with us. Rob Jonathan Serrie joins me from clemson South Carolina. Hes going to have a great view of this. Jonathan, whats happening there . Reporter rob, you can see the tent behind me and other preparations under way. Clemson university inviting the public free of charge, theyre expecting thousands to view the eclipse, but not just big crowds anticipated in clemson, but cities like columbia and charleston, communities in the path of the eclipse. Especially the day of the eclipse, probably traffic slowdowns, but our Highway Patrol has been working very closely with the local authorities on that to make sure theyve got enough man power to control those. Reporter tomorrow, the moons shadow will pass directly over 21 National Parks in the u. S. , the National Park service is bringing in extra staff and Law Enforcement what could be record crowds. Cities big and small, hotels are packed. Started about a month ago, and rates are about 30 higher than we normally give, which is one of our larger special events in the city of nashville. Reporter so back here live in clemson, 2 37 tomorrow afternoon, thats the magic time when were going to experience totality. The darkest phase of the eclipse, rob. Rob and its going to be dark outside, so bizarre. Weve had eclipses before, jonathan. Whats so special about the impact of this one . Reporter whats different about this one is that for one thing solar power is a much bigger player than the last one in 1979. A big enough player that unless Companies Take action, theyre going to notice problems with the power grid. And so whats happening is solar farms along the path of the eclipse will take in less sunlight at a time of year and time of day that air conditioners are running full blast and consuming large amounts of energy, but companies are taking action, they are trying to reduce the impact by the use of smart thermostats. At the push of a button, customers can opt into a powersaving program, they can rev up the air conditioning in the hours and minutes before the eclipse and when the sun goes away, cut down the power and remain comfortable. Gears up for annual joint military drills with south korea, the rogue regime again warning it could strike u. S. Mainland with its missiles. Many believe the u. S. Should go ahead with the exercises despite warnings from north korea, not happy about it. Like new york congressman peter king, a member of the Homeland Security committee. South korea and the United States have to show north korea how serious we are. The United States is not going to be driven from south korea, south korea needs us, we need south korea and cant be giving into threats from north korea. Their ultimate goal is to get us off the peninsula so they can unify it under one north korean government. Rob william la jeunesse joins us now with more live from guam. And william, what exactly is the north korean dictator worried about here . Reporter absolutely should be worried about almost nothing, ill tell you why in a second. Why . This is largely a computer simulation, the operation did begin today, lasts ten days, and basically troops from the u. S. , south korea, other allied nations go to a different computergenerated scenarios, involves the army, navy, air force and marines. The u. S. Says this is purely defensive, no intent to invade north korea. The chatter is laughable since this is largely a war game. So much for toning down the rhetoric as you mentioned, warning that any mistake on the u. S. Part could start a nuclear war and in pyongyang, new propaganda posters showing up on the streets showing the u. S. Capitol in ruins, trying to gin up support after the u. S. Led sanctions are expected, and half the population is already malnourished. It will force kim to negotiate while he hopes to leverage Nuclear Capability to ultimately eliminate or reduce u. S. Forces from the korean peninsula. Get the u. S. Military presence off of the korean peninsula, keep in mind, this president , donald trump, has said, questioned whether or not the u. S. Should have such a large military presence in south korea. Thats precisely what pyongyang wanted. Reporter so we spoke to a military spokesman in south korea moments ago and said listen, there are livefire exercises going on but they are not part of this operation, per se , and those are pretty limited at this point. Back to you. William, kim jongun doesnt like the intimidation of the war games, doesnt like the sanctions, is there indication he might do something . Reporter not that were aware of. But again, speaking to a military person in south korea, they said they wouldnt tell us even if they did know. What we know is this, north korea doesnt like this operation because they consider it provocative. Secondly, he feels in the past that this operation is, again, some kind of leadup to war, hes fired scuds in the past. He laid land mines in the dmz but hasnt done anything more than that. Fired missiles into the ocean but now we know north korea has the capability of firing on, say, a u. S. Territory like guam. He threatened to engulf the island in fire, if you will. Japan is taking it seriously because there are sirens testing going on as well as evacuation drills, you have to go over japan to reach guam and it could drop debris. You heard the hostility coming out of north korea. Many experts believe, listen, this guy will have to do something to try to back up his chest thumping, but that could involve firing something on his own soil or within the territorial waters, but the u. S. Said dont make provocative actions because we will answer militarily. Back to you. Rob very interesting, william la jeunesse, live from the Beautiful Island of guam. Thank you so much. President trump leaving new jersey heading back to washington and tweeting moments ago, heading to washington after working hard and watching some of the worst and dishonest fake reporting ive ever seen. As the president prepares to give a nationwide report on the future of afghanistan, the longest running conflict coming as domestic agenda faces growing uncertainty on capitol hill. Republicans hoping to deliver on tax reform after suffering miserable setbacks on health care. The president s former Deputy Campaign manager saying the party needs to get on the same page. The house and Senate Leadership has not bought into the president s agenda fully, and i think the record of the last seven months bears that out. Rob Garrett Tenney live from washington. Garrett, what can we expect to see with tax reform . Reporter rob, President Trump says he wants to enact the biggest tax cuts since president reagan was in office, getting that done wont be a walk in the park. After all, theres a reason why its been more than three decades since tax reform was last done. Incredibly massive undertaking that congress is extremely divided under. That would seem like when republicans tried to repeal and replace obamacare. The chairman of the house ways and Means Committee responsible for creating a detailed tax plan says he thinks they stand a better chance with tax reform. There are americans who defend obamacare and the Affordable Care act, not Many Americans that defend this tax code. You start with the different base. What you didnt see in health care was the National Effort to make the case for reform. You are seeing it now in a major way, not just lawmakers. Reporter the the end of april, the Trump Administration present aid blueprint of the tax plan which cuts the Corporate Tax rate but that doesnt necessarily mean the items end up in the plan that Congress Puts together. Theres a long way to go on that front. Rob garrett, what about the rest of the agenda . Where do things stand there . Reporter a lot of the bigticket items cant fully be done without congress, things like health care, tax reform and infrastructure. They could take a bit more time. The border wall with mexico is another example of that. The white house requested initial 1. 6 billion from congress for the 2018 budget to get that wall started. Again, though, that request is no done deal and is expected to face a lot of opposition in congress. There are a lot of things the president can do on his own through executive orders, seen that with immigration enforcement. President trump promised to take very, very quick action against the more than two million illegals in the country, that effort is well under way with i. C. E. Having arrested more than 41,000 this year between january and april. Two other areas weve seen the president take executive action are improving the va and renegotiating trade deals. Both of those are ongoing efforts, like a lot of action in this new administration has taken, it will take time to see just how well those play out. Rob . Rob still looking for the big legislative victory. Garrett, thank you so much. People around the world paying their respects to the victims of the terror attacks in spain that left 14 people dead more than 100 hurt. In barcelona, a solemn mass. Rob in the meantime, authorities are searching across International Borders for the suspect of the attack in barcelona. Benjamin hall joins me with the very latest. Reporter police here say they have now fully dismantled the terrorist cell which carried out this attack. Four of the terrorists arrested. Five were killed by police on friday. But say there were 12 members originally. That means three are still on the loose. Were learning more about the plans they hoped to carry out but fortunately failed amid the ruins of the house in alcanar, 120 large gas canisters were found, its believed they were going to be used in numerous car bombs targeting terrorist sites around the city. And how large this attack was meant to be. Today there was the large memorial mass in the city during which the cardinal called for spain to unite in the face of terror. It was attended by king philip of spain and Prime Minister rajoy, that was held at the sagrada familia. It was also one of the main targets for the terror cell hoping to blow it up. Mass here reminded everyone that the people will not be afraid. That being said, the city remains on high alert. This is not the end. We are in danger. We feel afraid, but we come because of the situation now it is under control. Reporter things may well be under control but, of course, the driver of the white van that plowed down las ramblas is still at large, he is thought to be the leader of the 12man terror group. They were searching a house in ripoll, thought to be the house of the local imam of the mosque. They believe he radicalized a group, a manhunt is on for him and, of course, have you remember to the victims of in all this. 13 who died here and one at the other event. These are good, but the way you know they work, you cant see a thing. Rob im staring right into the lightbulbs, i cant see them. You can put a pin in a piece of paper or a plate, stant away from the sun, turn the other way, and let the sun come through the hole and project through another hole. Rob you know human nature, people want to look up and put sunglasses on and happens all the time. How dangerous is this . Theyre flocking to get these things, only 2 for this thing. You got to go to a library, viewing stations, pharmacies that still has them. Rob right. If you dont have them, you can badly damage your eyes. I want to warn people about this. If you looked directly into the sun, you know what would happen . You would get blurry eyes, watery eyes and want to look away. Its the same amount of radiation now but you dont get that blurry, you dont get that tearing. Rob you dont get the warning. For a day or two. A day or two later, you cant see as well, you get blind spots, you get a yellow dot in the center of the vision, thats called solar retinopathy, shows damage to the most important part of the retina that can lead to scarring, bad news. They cannot view this without this. Now nasa says, hey, its safe for the period of time when its total, if you are in idaho, in South Carolina. Rob right on the line. If you are right in the line, the trouble is the eclipse is lasting 2 39 minutes. You know how long its lasting that it would be safe . Rob perfectly over the sun. 1 minute and 8 seconds. Only that one minute that you can look up there. How many people get that right . And how many people say doc, what do i do now . Do not go wild over this. Im okay with the glasses if you can get them. Rob dont put the ray bans on and think you are fine. Makes it worse, thousands of times of radiation, dont look through the telescope, that also makes it worse. If you wear these, make sure they are not scratched and are in great shape. Im going to give that you pair. I want this pair, ive heard theyre all sold out. Do you see people with vision problems after an eclipse like this . It must happen. Seen them before. The last time there was a total eclipse it was in 1979, a cloudy day so people didnt look up. This is the First Time Since 1918 coasttocoast in a narrow band and people are going to look up and im worried about it. I predict a lot of people going to eye doctors, if i can tell just a few thousand people out there. We have a Million People watching us, please dont look right into the sun.
