Chris this isnt burning embers. Well put out the flames and in some cases well put out burning embers. We have embers and we do have flames. Florida became more flamelike. But its going to be under control. You know, its not just this country. Its many countries. We dont talk about it in the news. They dont talk about mexico and brazil and still parts of europe. Which actually got hit sooner than us so its a little ahead of us in that sense. But you take a look, why dont they talk about mexico . Which is not helping us. Thank god i built most of the wall. Many of the cases are young people that would heal in a day. They have sniffles and we put it down as a test. Cases are up because we have the best testing in the world. And we have the most testing. No country has ever done what weve done in terms of testing. We are the envy of the world. They call and they say the most incredible job anybodys done is our job on testing. Because were going to very shortly be up to 50 million tests. You look at other countries, they dont do tests. They do tests if somebody walks into the hospital, theyre sick, theyre really sick. They test them then. Or theyll test them in a doctors office. They dont have massive areas of testing and we do. Five years ago, i sat down with lewis to discuss his life and the movement he helped lead. They came toward us, meeting us with night sticks. Chris john lewis is talking about bloody sunday, march 7t 7th, 1965. When 600 protesters tried to march from selma to montgomery, alabama, to demand their Voting Rights. Its a key scene in the movie, selma, john lewis was the man in the white trench coat. But its not a movie for lewis. Its a memory that still burns half a century later. Trying to protect my head, i really thought i was going to die there. Chris when did you realize that bloody sunday was a turning point . The American People saw what happened. They couldnt take it. There was a sense of righteous indig nation in america. Chris on march 15th president johnson addressed a joint session of congress and introduced the Voting Rights act. And we shall overcome. [ applause ] chris lewis was watching on tv along with Martin Luther king. I looked at dr. King, tears came down his face and he said we will make it from selma to montgomery and the Voting Rights act will be passed and he was right. Chris john lewis grew up in rural alabama, went to segregated schools and saw the signs for whites and colored. Then he brings up something that happened to the kids in his family when he was 16. Trying to get a library card, attempting to check out some books. We were told by the librarian that the library was for whites only and not for colored. Chris so was voting. By 1965, that was the focus of the Civil Rights Movement. Lewis says selma selected itself. The county was more than 80 africanamerican. There was not a single registered africanamerican voter in the county. Chris lewis served in congress for 34 years. But he went back to selma every year. Selma helped free and liberate not just american south, but helped liberate our country. Chris on the issue of race, how far have we come since selma . As a nation weve come a great distance, white, colored signs are gone. The only places we will see those signs today will be in a book, in a museum, on a video. Chris how far do we still have to go . We still have a distance to travel before we lay down the burden of race. Were not there yet. But were on our our way and we not turning back.
