North of fort myers area, weve seen it move on through the area, getting a bit of a break from the heavy rain and wind, storm surge will likely fill in overnight, now, in that still a major concern for them, that initial brunn of the storm has moved off looking at storm about 50 miles north of the area, everyone to the north. They are getting that initial impact. There are big thunderstorms embedded with this. In the red, that continues to be a tornado watch. I believe that will be in place entire overnight hour, tampa, and jacksonville, lingering overnight, still a category 2 storm for right now. Within next couple of hours it will drop down to a category 1 storm. By the time likely by the time to st. Petetampa area, after midnight, a powerful storm bringing with it very impressive wind totals as we get to 80 and 90 mile per hour range. And folks in atlanta will see winds in 5 mile an hour range wh the gusts, a future forecast for you, Pay Attention from 11 testimony tonight, you see this moving up, some heavier bands by 1 00 a. M. In northern tampa area, as you get on back side, the wind comes off of the gulf of mexico pushing that water up. That is why we talk about monday big day for tampa with storm surge, everything that gets south of that system. Well as you know, everyone in florida is under that hurricane watch, i can take you to georgia, we have hurricane watches in southern georgia, Tropical Storm warning to atlanta, this is a major one. And even as we go through tonight, which well get the brunlbrunt of it well be busy monday. Water levels rising in naples, florida, that is where Steve Harrigan circumstance he is joining us live, what it is like at this hour . They got 12 inches of rain here, during the storm. But that rain has stopped, Officials Say that, water around naples is still rising that is cause for concern. Earlier there was predictions of a possible 10 to 15 foot storm surge, we heard from emergency officials in naples that is not going to happen. He said even predicts of 8 to 10 foot storm surge is not going to happen, because the storm moved slightly to the east. Fortunately, predictions of cat flood surge. It is significant wind damage, sustained winds 130 miles for a half hour or so in naples, going in the small area we saw a number of downed trees. Some roofs as well. Not widespread. More damaged roofs than anything else. And power, here, it is dark. 210,000 clients, 197 without power, the main street is blackened out. It may take days or weeks to get it back up because so many trees, and downed power lines and water across the road. Convoys coming in for search, rescue and help. One thing that officials are stressing, if you are in shelters, 20,000 people have taken refuge in shelters do not go back to your homes yet it dark and dangerous on the road, the flood water is still rising. Back to you. Steve harrigan, the storm is still having quite an impact there in western florida. Were losing him there you could hear wind on his microphone as well. Thank you so much steve, stay safe. Tampa bracing for worst with eye of irma a few hours away. Mike tobin is live in tampa with more on what is going on. What it is like . It is increasing with intentry, one thing that forecasters have been and i think, is right about 10 00, today, they expected hurricane category 1 force winds and conditions to city of tampa, one thing you need to qualify as a category 1 hurricane is barometer to drop to 980 millibars of pressure is got to 10 00 here, 979 millibars of pressure, with that we see wind increase. The rain, increase. And as you look around, the rain is still largely coming straight down, we dont have that much of a vertical rain you get once a wind kicks in to gear. Looking down this direct, you see more blusty, a lot of water coming down, with hurricanes that wind is the show. The water is the punch. That means tomorrow, that is what is the thing that is keeping the authorities here awakawake, at night, that is whl people who were uprooted from their home they go to shelters or friends house who are uncertain about fate of their homes, they have to wait a while longer, storm will increase with intensity over next several hours, then the flooding event. It is not safe for people to go home yet, they want people to hunker down now, ride out the storm, if you had a hurricane plan, ready t read go the time r planning is over, and time for execution is here. Execute your hurricane plan, accept the fact were in this for the longterm, stay home, wait for authorities to get out into the areas, which is going to take some time, and wait for them to declare things are safe before you can answer that question about whether your home is there were seeing things increasing with intensity, were expecting more throughout the evening. It seems like, worst is yet to come. Mike, were impressed with your barometric watch, we see a lot of light behind you, it seems how much power how thage do you know about in the tampa area, or what can you tell from where you are . Reporter we have not been able to getting any official in terms of Power Outages, just predicts for massive outages. As you look around, the lights are on. We have seen that looks like one transformer that has e explodedo far, but here in tampa, you can see the real bluster as wind comes in, in big gusts, and driving the rain horizonly. To answer that question, thus far, all around the different places we have been in tampa, the lights are still on. It looks like hours ahead are going to be bad in the area, have you seen any sign of people in recent hours, or have they taken warnings to heart. It seems like play time is over. People who wanted to come out, particularly with odd phenomenon of water leaving the connectioning waters to tampa bay. That was remarkable, a lot of people wanted to come play in that. But now it looks like people are largely respecting the curfew. And look down 18th street, a lot of signs are now moving, as the storm is increasing. We have a little bit of debris on the road. But, not the kind of destruction you would expect to a category 1 hurricane conditions. By all we should see more as hour continue. Mike you are a good sport, you said it is not that pleasant out there, we appreciate you being out there to show us what is going on. Encourage others to stay inside, you show them what is going on, so they dont have to go out. State and local officials as well as president keeping an close eye on the storm, and readying for a massive relief effort. Joining us on phone congressman gus, who represents florida tampa bay metro patrol l tin area, about what have you seen in your district in terms of Hurricane Irma so far . Well, i am doing okay, mike, thank you. I have seen strong winds. So far. And heavy rain. So, you know that is the first events the strong winds, i know they will get stronger. Maybe 60, 70, maybe up to 85 by the end of the night. That is what weve seen, that is the first event. I am concerned about the storm surge as well. We have a lot of low lying areas, i am concerned for my constituents. And so again, i am going to assess this tomorrow. But, of course, i encourage our constituents our people all over florida, to heed the warnings. Dont go out until the officials tell you it is okay. I want to make sure that everyone is safe. I know you are concerned about the storm surge. The beauty of florida, reason why people want to live there is because it is so beautiful to be out there especially western side, gulf you know to be near that water, to have a view. Then it is time like these that you think about you know, did it make sense to buy this house that is on the waterfront or this condo or whatever it is. What i know you are concerned about a lot of different areas, what is your biggest concern in terms of the surge . Well, i am concerned about peoples lives. More than anything else. You know, i have also concerned about tornadoes, hitting the buildings. But we can fix that. We want to make sure that people are safe, this is a wonderful area. We live on the gulf for many years, and you know we had a couple storms. Again, follow directs directions, mead warns get out of the way, i am so proud of this citizens of state of florida. And the First Responders. So the local officials, the governor has been a an outstandg job, and i am really proud of the people, they are following directions. I visited shellers, for last couple of days. And you know, volunteers, they are actually for the elderly, people are volunteering to fill sandbags. Appreciate needs shelters, i tell you that everyone has come together, and were going through this together. Well survive. Comparing to types in past, do you think that your residents took the danger of this storm more seriously having seen what just happened with harvey . Did they look at that. S and decide that, you know, to take the warnings just more to heart. Absolutely. Absolutely. They have taken the warnings to heart. And against people are looking out for each other, shelters are practically full, i represent three county, pasco county, quite a few people are there. You know pet shelters. But everyone has volunteered, and again, i cant stay enough for the sheriff department, the police department, the firefighters be they are our heros. Congressman villa rock as, first concern is loss of life, several million floridians are without power at this hour, are you concerned about a loss of power in your immediate area as the storm heats up goes through your district . Mike, there are thousands of people im told in pasco county that have lost power, i believe that they are beginning to lose power. Pin ellis pinellas, well get it back. Well get it back as long as people are safe, and i want them to be patient. I know they want to get outsides, but again. We got to make sure they are safe. Congressman gus. You, your constituents, great people of florida in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you so much. God bless you. You too. He was talking about emergency workers there, you know one thing that struck me in meet up to this, i was watching a firefighter in miami area where people were evacuated. He said were staying here. We staying behind, in our building to help people, you just think of all those folks, those Emergency Responders out there risking their lives for others, what heroes they are. During these storms, and every other day as well. Were so grateful they are out there to help people. No question, were coming up to anniversary of 9 11, we think First Responders with that. And certainly seeing these hurricanes in florida and texas, so many heroes on front lines, saving countless lives. Remarkable work. Really remarkable, and necessary, were grateful. In the meantime we just received word that another construction crane collapsed in florida, this time in fort lauderdale, irmas bruising hurricaneforce winds. This is the third construction crane to come down, two others collapsed in miami, were just getting word that a crane collapsed in ft. Lauderdale. No injuries have been reported in any of these accidents, the situation in much of florida getting worse as storm moves through, officials urge everyone to stay inside, heed those curfews. Be careful, let it pass, there you go. Joining us on phone forth laid lauderdale mayor jack, thank you, mr. Mayor. Thank you. And i tell you, were dealing with a lot. What is latest in ft. Lauderdale. As you were talking about we went by the sight on ft. Lauderdale beach, we have a crane that collapsed there that is very noticic. What is not noticeable, power lines down, cable lines, and they are hanging road, you have trees they have fallen and blocked road. I have been out with our Emergency Operations people. People need to say off the road, they need to obey the curfew, there are dangers left and right. I see a tree leans up toward a house, this is an area that was suppose to be not hit that hard. As you see that damage, ern that lives nearby wonders how long does it take to get it cleaned up and trees out of the way, and power prestored. Restored, what would you say . I think. We have curfew still in place. We will keep it in place until tomorrow at 10 00, we may extend that, after going out and done assessments, there are a lot of areas that are not accessible because of power lines, trees, bushes. It amazing, my house lost several trees, and some on the back poncporch that were damage. When we get a good assessment after the sun is up. Most people lost power, we cant really assess the damage, we have spotlights on Emergency Operation vehicles, about we dont want people walking arou around. There are a lot of dangerous situation,. 3 cars were stuck in the sand. I mean do you coordinate with the Power Companies when they go out and do the repairs. Have you precoordinated with them to know how quickly they will be able to get out and work on the problem . Absolutely, part of the weve been talking on your show and others, we knew that the storm was coming 5 days out. We had a Good Opportunity to coordinate our post storm response as well. We feel confident well get this done, but the problem circumstance you know were now just, getting winds have died down enough to get out and do our assessment. It is d. Ddark. We need the light of day to get all of the assessment done, power is out. Probably 80 of the city. Wow, all right mayor thank you so much, we appreciate your time, and that update, i know you have a long night ahead, thank you for spending a few minutes with us. Thank you. Hardy county deputy julie brin bridges, were killed in a head on crash this morning in southeast tampa. Mike they were driving to deliver supplies, and sergeant on his way to work, they were required to stay on duty, despite mandatory evacuation orders for civilian, our condolences with their families tonight. A lot of damage in battered city of miami, that is where bryan llenas is. Joining us now. Reporter look were looking at receding waters here, that water came from storm surge in downtown miami, in the brickell area, that is good news, were seeing a lot of cars, people are coming out to streets, which is what authorities dont want to do, there are many dangers there and there is a curfew from 7 p. M. To 7 p. M. T a. M. To keep people safe. Right here this is a piece of metal that fell off of a building about 85 stories tall, tallest building and being built right now in miami, this same building had 6 foot glass panels flying off of the building in crashing on to the ground. We saw a half dozen with our own eyes when we were here, those are heavy glass panels, now we have pieces of glass like this, all over the floor. All throughout. From either those panels or other things, those are examples of dangers out there, a lot of injuries that could happen, and senator marco rubio tweeting, hospital running on two hours left of their generate oror they need diesel fuel. They need that, again. Were going to figure out what is going on there but this is the type of stuff that happens in. The storm may leave but were still very much assessing dealing with other situation, with. Miami beach and other places will be inaccessible until tuesday afternoon, airport allowing limited flights, it will take a while for love to lo get back to normal . Were looking at how deep the water is around you, how far does that stretch, can you tell . Can you tell . Reporter you know, i think it guess back about 4 or 5 blocks that way, the type of flooding that were seeing in florida. That came from storm surge, this type of flooding is everywhere in terms of in different neighborhoods, and pockets from the rain. Florida is lowslowing there are a ton of places that are easily flooded. A good example of the type of flooding that were seeing in many areas. I have not been to miami beach, my colleague is out there, there are some areas worse than others, right now this water is receding quickly, this is good news, you know, just down the road on Coconut Grove there are homes that probably dealt with some sort of water. But to the level of 6 to 10 feet, luckily, i think many of those homes were spared of that. It just dark right now that is the point. 3 Million People without power. It is tough to get around, the state is trying to assess what is going on, people need to stay off the street. Melissa bryan llenas thank you for that, after the break, well check in with the mayor of maiscmiamibeach for an update. Live Team Coverage of the powerful storm, many florida residents evacuated before irma struck, some decided to stay. Melissa one is fishing boat captain, drew, he is staying on the boat in johns pass, part of madeira beach, what is it like out there right now, sir. It is not too bad. It is steady 50 knots if i this to gusts guess, maybe gusts of 60 before i got on with you. Maybe a little bit more, so far it is not too bad, were sitting pretty good. Melissa what does it feel like . It is interesting. The water level here in johns pass like i have never seen, so low. The boat was sitting in the sand for several hours. We had to loosen the lines on the boat. Slack them up, they were getting so tight with the boat dropped. I guess the storm maybe sucked water out of johns pass, something that had never seen before, it is slowly coming back in. Mike have there been times why you said i made a mistake, i should have my head checked . Last night, i had been on the boat for 3 nights, i thought about it for a minute, but made the right decision. Been on the boat for a long ti time. Melissa why did you decide to stay . What was your thinking . The idea was to keep the boat in the slip. Were on a big 70 foot cat, and the goal was to keep the boat in the slip for as long as possible. We have a ton of extra lines on board. Just monitor the lines, make sure nothing breaks. We have lines to stand by. And had the storm gotten too bad the idea was to leave the slip. Just east where we keep the boat there are a few islands, our goal would be to get on east side of those islands to protect ourselves from the wind. Mike how many of you are on the boat. What do you do to pass the time . There are three of us onboard, myself, another captain, and a mate. Weve been hanging out, waiting for the storm for a few days, this is our third night. We lost watched a lot of movies, and had a lot of junk food. Sharing a lot of stories, up in of us has ever experienced anything that extreme. Weve been through a lot of weather, onshore and offshore, but never anything like this. It has been interest. Was the idea that you wanted to be on the boat to be there to save it, do things to take care of it . Is that why . Absolutely. Our goal was to protect the boat as best we can. By doing that we chose to stay. Mike wow. Captain joe drew, fishing boat captain, we wish you and the best. Melissa your continued safety, definitely. Thank you. Mike meteorologist add ac adams been tracking im aadam. Reporter were tacking irma, overland, this is the path. Moving across fort myers. This is slowing down a little bit. Were forecasting this to drop to a category 1 storm in next couple of hours, the winds continue to back off and back off. You can tell were trending that direct, the other concern we have our tornadoes, threat in place. This say tornado watch, that is in place for the overnight hours, the most active area has been right on the east coast, edgeeven though brunt of wind on west coast, the no e we have bas that have been bringing in very strong winds twisting it up that is when you get short lived tornadoes, running up onshore. Just staying on front right side of this storm, as we continue to track its way up the western coast here of florida. Ill step out. This is our, hourbyhour future cast, there is your time in corner, we watch this lift up, expecting it to move threw st. Pete, tampa area, really after midnight, perhaps 1 00. Then continuing to lift its way up the coast, heaviest rain, initial bands way out in fronts of this. But back side of the system will be just as important. Once do you this winds circulate that direct, and get on south side of the storm, then winds come off of the gulf of mexico back on to land. It could really start to grab all this water, and push it up, that is when you see storm surge up to 5 or 10 feet. Waves on top of that. Even if you are thinking this is going to pass by. That does not mean you are at the end of this event. Other concerns will be winds, that weve been talking about, they are not just isolated to west coast. Everything here in this red area is a hurricaneforce wind, everything in the orange around it, that is a hurricaneforce gust. At least briefly see those winds, that covers the entire state, orlando, gainesville to jacksonville, all areas where you are getting winds and gusts, that will lift across the state, and by tomorrow evening, folks in atlanta, north georgia will see these very strong winds to 50 perhaps gusting to 60 miles an hour. There is a lot to deal work no surprise, that the entire state still under the hurricane warning for now, and portions of south georgia, then a Tropical Storm warning to atlanta, and even up against north shore, large area continue to be watch. Melissa add am, every time Something Like this happens we learn about atmospheric science, you heard that boat camp an, captain talk about as storm moved in water went out, and his boat was on the sand, others describing the same thing. It you tell us about that. That is scary, ive seen photos that are mindblowing, the sea seems like it left. The storm surge that were talking about, that has to come from somewhere, most of that comes from other places on the coast. So if there is 10 feet of water outside your door, someone else is missing that 10 feet of water, we have a lot of moisture in clouds rain. It comes from somewhere, the images have been mindblowing to see how much water is pulled away then moved to different portions, if you have seen the photos that means that water is on the way. Wow. Yep. Melissa thank you, adam. Mike miami beach dealing with dangerous conditions. Melissa philip levine, is that citys mayor, he is the phone with us, what can you tell us about what it like on the ground there. I can tell you miami beach, we have trees and branches, on the road, downed power lines, overall not much physical damage to the city, thank god. We evacuated our city way in advancement and Recovery Efforts start early in the morning. We have had flooding problems in the past, we have installed pumps, generators, raised our roads, we did well. We did not flood very much, our pumps performed. We were very happy. Now, i am watching carefully and concerned about communities on the western coast of florida. Melissa our reporters on ground talking about fallen glass and debris on the roads. That has to be a bis concern to you. And huge part of the clean up. What is your reaction to that . Most important thing right now fur us to get our roads cleaning up for residents and visitors get back to living life. And we will take tomorrow, we begin early in the morning, unfortunately we have to keep the city isolate isolated befort people back. We have had gas leaks, and downed power lines, the safety of our residents is important. Melissa what do you tell them in terms of curfew. Tonight we have a curfew 8 00, we plan to have it again tomorrow 8 p. M. We dont want to see any looting, and make sure our residents are 100 safe. There are Power Outages every where, that is combined with downed trees and driving conditions will be very rough. Mike mayor levine, is part of message to be patient, which you consider the scope of the storm. A lot of emergency crews had to stage out of state, does this involve patience in terms of recovery and rebuilding . No question, we need patient. We patience, were lucky as a community, we have a lot of debris on the streets, but it will require patience. And retire tolerance, and a lot of thankness in fact were in condition were in, well be able to rebuild our city a heck of a lot faster had it been a direct hit from irma. Mike that was a big fear for a long time, it was heading right today you. You did take some punishment. But not a direct blow. Were incredibly fortunate, i called it a while back, i said this a nuclear hurricane, this is massive, this is large, it packs a heck of a punch, thank god we got sideswiped. Now time to look at recovery, and rebuild, and i can tell you, our community is tough, and resilresilient. Well be back to the maisch maiscmiami beechthat beach that everyone knows and loves. Melissa thank you, mayor. Coming up fox Team Coverage that continues from coasttocoast, we bring you latest on Hurricane Irma. Mike Rick Leventhal is live in daytona beach, he is up next. Joining us live is rick left know thalevin that he is i. Reporter we just moved. Our car was really being rocked by the winds, it felt like a swirling wind almost torn addict. We heard a rumor about a tornado touchdown, i spoke with the sheriff of volusia county, he confirmed there they believe a tornado touchdown in ormond beach where a home, a vacant home was destroyed according to sheriff of volusia county, went the last hour, there is an ongoing warning for tornado activity here. You can see minor debris, palm frahms in the road, were in front of a big hotel, a big wall here, separating us from the beach. Were not feeling wind as much, but if you look down atlantic avenue, some trees that are not protected, and street signs they are rocking out here. Emergency management told us they are expecting worse winds in this overnight. They are expecting Tropical Storm force winds. Overnight, then, possible gusts to 75 Miles Per Hour here in the county. Between now and 10 or 10 00 a. M. In the morning, that is why they closed all of the bridges between the beach and mainland, and there a curfew until noon tomorrow, they dont people on the streets, the wind is howling and stuff is flying. Mike you have high winds, heavy rain. Millions without power then you have to worry about tornadoes as well . Brutal, rick . Yeah. It certainly can be. And we hope we dont see any more of those in this area. But, you know, the power is a huge concern. They had thousands of people lose power here in this county. But the winds have not been that bad here yet. We have a lot of power crews in this hotel on stand by, ready to roll as soon as worst of the storm goes by. They will have a lot of work to do in days and weeks ahead . All right, rick thank you so much. We appreciate your time, and you can really hear wind whipping around him, you see this light there. Dangling emblematic of all that is going on in florida, look the water flying across the bottom of screen. Mike a massive storm lashing state of florida were live throughout the night as Hurricane Irma continuing to pound florida from coasttocoast, back in a moment. Melissa were back with Live Team Coverage of Hurricane Irma on the fox news channel. Mike we check in with reporter joel waldman in downtown, miami, how is it there now . Reporter they call this wall street of south on brickell avenue. A marked improvement, the water was waistehigh, it has receded. But were expecting a last band from Hurricane Irma to come from south, head northward, this is why you see current ripple that way, we are getting word a third crane has gone down in miami, that is very bad news, these cranes weigh tons. And they just didnt have time to bring them down in time. They said they would need about two weeks to get them down, i am sure Miamidade County will look at this closely. Host Hurricane Irma, they unlatched them and let them swirl like weathervanes, letting them spin but three of them folded and collapsed, damaging buildings. I may have told you, we were awoken at 8 p. M. With a banging on the door, they told us there is a hurricane. And then, it turned out that windows were flying out of our hotel, they were taking necessary precautions, we huddled into a bal room ballroom, a makeshift shelter. Getting a thousand or more people in there, doing it with ease, it was quite remarkable to see everyone coming together, a short time ago, i saw a couple walking hand and hand, barefoot, that i wouldnt do on a good day in downtown could miami, tourists should not be out here. There is a curfew. And schools are closes for the foreseeable future. Mike thank you, joel waldman, when we come back we hear from mayor of hollywood, florida, and from a florida congressman. And while we make more ecommerce deliveries to homes than anyone else in the country, we never forget. That your business is our business the United States postal service.
