Are dead. Flee more a three more are wounded. Officers are stationed outside area hospitals where their wounded colleagues are being treated. Officials telling us in a briefing a short time ago that one suspect on scene is dead. Officers sent in a robot to make sure there were no explosives. Not that they have word there were explosives, but they just dont know what theyre dealing with here. They clearly believe theyre dealing with a conspiracy. They call the scene contained but active. Meaning theyre still working it, but the suspect who is there is deceased. And were now getting dramatic audio of police calling in the shooting. Listen. Shots fired officers down got a city officer down shots fired shots fired thats the audiofrom scene. The white house we leasing a brief statement on the attack essentially saying president obama has been briefed and will be updated throughout the day as more details come in. The white house also offering Baton Rouge Police any assistance they might need. Of course the main question now is exactly what are they dealing with. You heard the Police Officer who came forward in the last hour to say they have reason to believe that there are now two other suspects. The one suspect who was down leads him to believe these other two and witness statements may be wearing all black or camouflage, apparently wearing a mask earlier. Which is part of the reason we believe we dont have ascriptio. It sounds as if somebody called in or someone with a gun on airline highway, which is pretty much the main drag through baton rouge, somebody seen carrying a weapon, may have been shots fired. Thats how it went out. And then as the police arrived, the word were getting from authorities and sources is that those police were ambushed and attacked. The working theory at the moment according to the authorities is that the cops were being fired at from multiple locations. So its one thing to have a single shooter like we did in dallas, awful, terrible and unimaginable on the face of it. But now the authorities are leading us to believe that at least in the early going they believe this may be a conspiracy, multiple shooters with one down and two missing, martha. Yeah. And as you say, shepard, we just dont know at this time. Because early on in the dallas situation there was thinking that the shooting was coming from a number of Different Directions. And that of course was in sort of an inner city cavern with Tall Buildings around them in the middle of dallas. This is a much more open environment. And when you listen to that first 911 call, or the call that went into the dispatcher, it sounded as if they didnt know where the gunfire was coming from. So they were trying to adjust to deal with it. And you have to ask whether or not that the shots that were fired initially may have been in order to draw police to that scene. And we heard from corporal mcneely earlier talked about they were dressed in black, discussion they had masks on. What we know at least from the descriptions were getting so far is this is far from a situation where you had, you know, a strip mall or Convenience Store where someone being pulled over suddenly went awry. It appears to be more coordinated than that. It also of course comes on the heels of the july 5th shooting of alton sterling. There have been protests taking place in baton rouge. We also know they broke up what they believe to have been a plot against Police Officers over the course of the last week. Four people they took into custody who had stolen guns from a pawnshop and had in some way, shape or form suggested that they were stealing those guns in order to shoot Police Officers. And, shepard, just one piece of information we got on that just today was that the fourth person they took into custody was a 12yearold boy who they believe was part of that plot. All that we believe separate and distinct from what were dealing with here, which appears to be a fairly coordinated attack. Whether it was one person who had been planning it and put time and thought into it, or more than that, thats the big question thats still out there, shep. Indeed. The local newspaper, the Baton Rouge Advocate is reporting right now that the one suspect is dead and that Law Enforcement believe two others are at large. Separate from that, West Baton Rouge authorities are interviewing two men. Now, again, thats from the reporting of the Baton Rouge Advocate newspaper, fox news cant confirm that at this moment. But we know that one officer is being treated for nonlife threatening injuries at baton rouge general Regional Medical center, a parish away. Two marked units from the states fire office were parked outside that emergency room entrance around noon central time today. One Unmarked Police unit remained there an hour later. Again, this is all from the Baton Rouge Advocate, that which i was just giving you. Whether these two people who are being interviewed in west baton rou rouge, separate city, whether those two are directly related or might have just police just wanted to talk to them about circumstances, we simply dont know at this point. And your point, martha, about the early going of the dallas shooting, is one worth remembering. They were convinced, i was there and talked to a lot of Police Officers and said we were convinced shooting was coming from multiple directions. Its not just the chaos of the moment but the sound ricochetting as you so rightly pointed out. That wouldnt be the case here in baton rouge. It sounds like all of these cops were sort of there together. Certainly sends a chill up your spine to think these men and women just out there doing their jobs suddenly they are like targets on airline highway in baton rouge. Its just unfathomable. It is unfathomable. And when you think about, shep, what happened in nice and the concerns that its just all around the globe right now about the kind of situations that regular americans or anyone in any country might find themselves in, and who do they turn to to protect themselves but the Police Officers who are out there to protect them. But now youve got a situation in this country where the Police Officers themselves have to be going to work with their heart in their throat and hoping that everything goes okay while theyre out there that day on the job. Its just such a sad situation that tears at the fabric of so much of what we have all taken for granted for so long, shepard. It feels like an escalation situation, though those are separate incidents and we dont have any reason to believe the two are connected. Our local station wbrz, abcs channel 2 there in baton rouge is reporting on locations and specifics. Lets listen in there for just a moment. Sunday morning like they were there maybe having coffee or just coming and going. Well, i know because i work right off old hammond highway, so i know the police are usually there. But this morning i dont remember seeing any police thats why i didnt know what was going on, but i called 911. And then as i was calling i even saw a couple of Police Officers they must have not known what was happening, so i was blowing at them and telling them to roll the window down. And i told them what happened and then it was like armageddon. The police were headed that way. Sure. So all of a sudden there are a lot of police brens showed up at the b quick or right in the area where the gunman was . Yes. When i called 911 she said i didnt feel safe, i told her i wasnt going to stay there, that i was trying to get out of harms way. I was trying to get to safety. Well, and you are safe now, right . Youve managed to get home and get out of that area . No, i got off from work this morning about 8 30. I couldnt get home, so i picked my daughter up and we are in i have to go pick up some things from the grocery store. And i just knew i needed to get out of baton rouge, you know, to be safe. And i didnt want to be in, you know, the Police Officers or the paramedics or anybodys way. I knew i needed to get off the road. Let them handle their business. So when you heard the news now that three Law Enforcement officers, two policemen and a deputy are dead, several other wounded, i guess when you heard the news after what youd seen, what was your reaction . I, i back the cops, i back the blue. And i was just devastated. A little more now on the two additional people whove been taken into custody. The station were watching now wbrz in baton rouge, the local abc station, and we thank them for their assistance today. Brz is reporting two men taken into custody being brought to Baton Rouge Police department for questioning at this moment. One officer being treated at baton rouge general, as i mentioned a second ago. And it is weve been reporting that one of the officers is critical. And theyre very concerned about that officer. I dont know if a man or a woman, but an officer who is very critical, there were great concerns. And wbrz is suggesting in its twitter feed that that officer may have lost his or her life. But fox news cant confirm that. Now the question, i guess, martha, above all else is, are they right about this being a conspiracy . Are they right about there being other sns and what role do these two whove been taken in to Baton Rouge Police department, what role did they play . Its a great question. We just dont know at this point. We know in dallas there were people taken into custody and then they were released. So whether this was a single shooter or more than that. And it really changes the perspective on, you know, what might have been the driving factor or how much planning went into it, depending on that factor. Lets bring in ed davis, former commissioner of the boston Police Department who led the response to the Boston Marathon bombing. Ed, good to have you with us as always. Im sorry its under really tough circumstances for Law Enforcement. Your thoughts on what were seeing and how much it plays into a larger sort of hot summer of 2016 that were watching unfold here. Well, martha, this is a Terrible Development in light of the upcoming conventions and all the other incidents occurring across the country. Ive spoken to some of my former colleagues this morning and this afternoon. And theyre afraid. There is a real fear that officers will be physically attacked. And the tenor in the country is very high right now. One officer said that every night someone screams at the cruiser with an epitaph. And they just drive by. These things are happening frequently. So we need to have cooler heads prevail. I know the Police Leadership in baton rouge is looking for restraint and trying to dial things back. And then this thing happens thats going to push officers to the edge. This is not helping things. Obviously its a terrible human tragedy. And our hearts and sympathies go out to the officers and their families, but its larger than that. Its an attack on our society. Those are fighting words. When you think about everything that is coming across this summer, youve got two conventions, you have the police in cleveland as we have seen out in force. And theyre here to protect the people coming into cleveland to cover this convention and be members of this convention and be delegates to this convention and to watch the american process play out. And to have them also at the same time having to be watching out for everyone here but fearing for their own lives at the same time as they will be in Police Departments across this country, ed, it presents a special challenge to them doing their work. It truly does, martha. Were in a situation now where officers instead of moving closer to the community will be dealing with more military tactics just to stay safe. Theyll be looking at force protection. Even now after dallas you see officers on high buildings with binoculars. And, you know, theyre keeping their firearms out of sight, but believe me, theyre armed. And this is not the way this government operates. This democracy that we so love has been above that in the past. And its just tragic to see this situation getting worse and worse this summer. Its clearly going to be very difficult. Yeah. Oh, we have a quote from the louisiana governor, John Bell Edwards who had this to say about what unfolded in baton rouge this morning on a sunday morning at 9 00. This is an unspeakable and unjustified attack on all of us at a time when we need unity and healing. He goes onto say, rest assured every resource available to the state of louisiana will be used to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice. Ed, when you think about what you had to deal with in boston with the tsarnaev brothers, and put yourself in the shoes of the detectives and officers in baton rouge right now, and given what we know about the dispatch call that went in, the discussion that people were wearing black, put it all together for us. How does it add up to you given what you know at this point . Well, similar to what we saw with the terrorist incident here in boston, there is clearly a conspiracy here. So the officers are address iin this attack in terms of conspiracy. Theyre looking for the other participants. They are checking the identification of the suspect who is down. They are putting together intelligence on everything they know about that suspect and his associates. Theyre fanning out to question all of those people. Theyll be downloading cellular phone information. Theyll be looking for cameras from the area. Theyll be looking for rental cars, vehicles, anything that would allow these individuals to move around. So theres a very intense investigation going on right there. And they will rule this out very quickly because they have one suspect in custody and two others being questioned right now. But make no mistake, the people who do who did this will be held accountable for it. Its just the signal thats being sent out to police far and wide that further removes us from the Real Solutions that we need in this country, Community Policing and more connection with the community. This does exactly what people dont want to have happen here. Just want to point out that we learned earlier governor edwards and mayor holden and a number of other officials are with family members at the our lady of the lake hospital. So you have some officials in baton rouge, ed, whose job it is to be with the fallen officers families, to reassure them, to comfort them in any way that you possibly can given what they have gone through this morning. I mean, these families have just been ripped apart by the loss of their loved ones, no doubt. And then you have these other officer who is have to kind of put that aside for the moment and focus on the task at hand, which is finding these other perpetrators if indeed there are others. Theres no question that the department is has divided responsibilities right now. And there are a core group of investigators doing the things that i spoke about earlier. But make no mistake the police chief, the colonel we have a live News Conference going on in baton rouge coming to us from wbrz this afternoon. We are rushing to get this information out as quickly as possible. Is fl any indication this mornings incident had anything were not sure of anything. Was it a robbery, an ambush . Were not sure of anything right now. All we do know at this particular time is that there was a shooting. We believe theres multiple suspects. One suspect is deceased. Multiple officers were shot. We do have some that have been killed. Thats what i know for sure right now. Whats happening behind us here . Anything . Were securing the area with the deceased suspect, the suspect that has been killed. Were making sure there arent any explosives in the area. Trst no other suspects were not 100 sure of that. We do know and believe there are more than one suspects, so thats why were reaching out to the community. We have reason to believe there would be explosives . We dont know. We dont know. So were taking every precaution to make sure our lives are safe. Were going to check the scene thoroughly and make sure we do what we can to make sure not only us but the citizens of baton rouge i saw this coming in from wbrz and thought it was live, but thats taped. You probably saw that a while ago if youve been with us for a while. The latest from the scene, the man started shootinging indiscriminately. We know two men have been taken to Baton Rouge Police department. Were starting to get more on those of specifics where these officers are from, now we know at least three of them have been killed. And two Law Enforcement officers and at least five others injured. Lots of new reports coming in. And as we get breaking out of baton rouge, well take you back there. It has been a planned attack, but not to my assumption but a witness as i walked around the fence and saw a man laying on the ground in a red shirt that wasnt a Police Officer, in a parking lot, an empty parking lot was another gunman running away as more shots were being fired back and forth from several guns. And then about 45 seconds later thats when police started to pull up on the scene. And now we know at least three officers have died from two different departments in the baton rouge area. One other officer in very Critical Condition in a local hospital. And others reported having been injured. The numbers have kind of been all over the place, but somewhere between three and five additional officers injured. Were now getting a report from the advocate newspaper, the Baton Rouge Advocate, that after they had responded to this shooting, and while they were on scene, someone approached a Police Barricade and was tasered by the authorities. Now, tensions are certainly high. We dont know the details on that. I can report do just that. In addition two people have been brought into the Police Headquarters there in baton rouge. I wouldnt call them suspects at this moment because police havent given us specifics on that. We know theyve been taken in for questioning. Some of the local media got pictures of these two people being put into a police car. But whether they will have anything to do with this case is unknown. The most important thing that Police Officers want us to report is that they believe there are two other accomplices, that this was a conspiracy of three, they believe. And that two others are missing. Maybe at the time of the shooting having been wearing camouflage or all black with a mask. Certainly they most likely would have changed by now, but thats all police have given us and were passing it along to you. I mean, every day there is a huge story that otherwise we would have covered in a span of months and months just on top of each other. And the only thing they appear to have in common right now is that there is sort of a madness that is existing. Whether its between Police Officers and people in our country or the things that weve seen overseas in nice, just stunning. I mean, think about what weve seen. Louisiana, minnesota, dallas, nice, turkey, then this. The string of news events is pretty stunning how fast its going. Youre right, there is a dangerous feeling, a climate that you can feel. Its palpable. And that is going to, i think, translate to the opening of this convention. You know, already weve been talking about security. There are tons of Police Officers out on the streets. There are 3,000 plus federal officers, officials here to help with security. You have the cleveland Police Department request of the Ohio Governor kasich to ban the open carry law for guns here, which he turned down just moments ago saying Law Enforcement is noble. We all grieve that we see attacks on officers. Ohio governors do not have the power to arbitrarily suspend federal and state Constitutional Rights or state laws, as suggested. And goes onto talk about the bonds with the police. But you can sense that there is a real concern in the wake of all of this. Yeah. Clearly i was looking back through Donald Trumps intentions and hopes for this convention and months ago he said he wanted it to be fun. I dont know how much fun there will be in cleveland given the news thats going on around the world. He recently said he thought it would take a much more serious tone given whats going on out there. He tweeted this morning just moments ago, we can put that up on the screen, his reaction to what we have seen playing out in baton rouge. He says we grieve for the officers killed in baton rouge today. How many Law Enforcement and people have to die, says donald trump, in this tweet this morning, because of a lack of leadership in our country . We demand law and order. And, bret, just going through the list of people that are going to speak, theyre already before this happened was a focus on law and order. You have sheriff david clark. Rudy giuliani, asa hutchinson, former Homeland Security chief. This has been his focus for some time regardless of these events. It has. Each night has a theme. First night is how to keep america safe, based on make America Great get at the end thursday night bringing america together is the theme that night. But i think this will change the tone and tenor of those early moments. And well wait to see how this develops, this investigation in baton rouge. But clearly there is a sense that this is a dangerous time. I think that law and order statement, youre starting to hear from donald trump again and again and again is something he thinks is powerful. Well see if it translates for him. It obviously deals with the visceral feelings that people are feeling about the angst in the country. You wonder what the response will be from Hillary Clinton to that when the turkey events were unfolding the other day and one nice was unfolding, she did interview say things to the effect of were at war, we are at war against islamic radicalism. Shes speaking to the naacp tomorrow. And it will be interesting to see her remarks in the wake of all these things, these string of events that weve seen. Yeah, it absolutely will. Theres just no way to separate all of these things. These are the things that americans will have in their minds when they walk into the voting booth in november, at least if this trend continues. They will be trying to figure out whether or not Hillary Clinton represents what can sort of stabilize the country and bring it together in a way that it sorely needs, or whether donald trump is going to represent that for people. It becomes really central to what this election looks like its going to be about, bret. Yeah, and most elections are about the economy and how you feel at the Kitchen Table with your economic situation. I think National Security and feeling safe is starting to tick up, obviously, in recent days. Some new polls that came out, the Washington Post polls today show that the race is tightening a little bit, at least according to this poll. Clinton leads trump 4743. And in last months poll clinton was leading by 12 points. So it clearly seems to be tightening up. You look at the swing states, some polls have her up four to seven, others have him up in a couple of states, but pretty close in the margin of error. Head of clooeveland police unio calls on Ohio Governor to declare state of emergency and suspend laws that allow open carry of firearms during Republican National convention . Is that new there . We just discussed it a little bit. Bret was saying governor kasich has said he will not he wont do that. And clearly it becomes a pressing issue. But according to the statement we saw from governor kasich, he said you cant use a moment like this to overturn whats written into law in the state of ohio, but clearly, shepard, youre right, its a very controversial issue. Ive seen signs on restaurants and cafes, you know, please declare if you are carrying a weapon as you come in here. Its definitely something that is on peoples minds in cleveland at this point. Theres no doubt about it. Im sure it is. We just gotten word from a number of the local stations on updates on the officers who were hurt and kill ed, were awaitin a News Conference to happen in about an hour and a half. Reporting from the scene now is theyre still actively searching for two more suspects. We know because weve seen the pictures and weve seen the local reporting that two people have been brought in for questioning at the Baton Rouge Police department. Wbrz has a reporter live on scene now, lets listen. No one leaving the area. These sheriff officers just brought in, all of baton rouge command units have been brought to the corner, seems theyre setting up. That is the place theyre going to control the situation from and anything that comes out of that we will bring that straight to you. Again, battery sheriffs officer brought their to the area ensuring nothing further comes out of this situation with the reporting there we thank you to our friends at wbrz. I want to let people know that an officer warning has gone out by twitter to Police Officers there in baton rouge. They are no longer allowed to go out on patrol on solo. Everyone has to be in officer alert state, is what they call it. The fact is it had been that way for the last few days since the shooting and developments which had followed that shooting. So im not sure how much of an increase this is. But ive also gotten word out of bat baton rouge. Sending out word and condolences, its a small town, less than tensions were not as aware of on a national level, tensions had been flaring in baton rouge for quite some time. Now the tension is how to stop this madness and find what authorities believe is two more suspects. I cant know this, but i can tell you Authorities Say they believe there are two more suspects. Three officers confirmed dead and one critical. News conference is coming. Our live coverage will continue after this. Three Police Officers dead in baton rouge 9 00 a. M. This morning the gunfire broke out. Instantly there were reports of shots fired and Police Officers down. Those chilling words that rung out in baton rouge today echoing what we heard not long ago in dallas, texas. The report is that one individual had some sort of rifle and was shooting indiscriminately, that he was wearing black fatigues and a black mask. Theres a belief by Police Officers who are searching for at least two other people, and two people have been questioned, but whether or not there were accomplices remains the biggest question mark at this point. But they are not taking any chances. And they are trying to figure out whether or not this individual was working alone. The other big story though right now is the Cleveland PolicePatrolmen Association asking governor kasich to suspend state law allowing the open carry of firearms during the course of the Republican National convention and governor kasich has said he will not do that. That is also a very big story as we head into this convention. So more here from cleveland in a moment, but lets go now back to new york and shepard. Martha, thanks. The mayors on the phone with us now, the baton rouge mayor kip holden on the line. Mr. Mayor, sincerist ce isise is to you. Thank you. I just left the hospital and the emotion for those families, when youre walking up and going to a room and when you see the daughter of one of these officers say i know my dad is coming back home. Youre just torn apart by the emotions of this little girl who says my dad is not dead. I know my dad is coming back home. And so when you hear that and then the wife saying the same thing, ill be waiting for my husband at home. But in reality weve lost three great officers to a sense of violence that should not have even occurred. Mr. Mayor, i know theres a fourth officer, im told a sheriffs officer, whos said to be critical in the hospital. Can you give us any yes, sir, hes in extremely Critical Condition. And right now we are praying for him. But i can tell you that, again, it is very, very tough looking at the fight that he has to make just for survival. And so everything right now leaving the hospital not even ten minutes ago is something whereby were dealing with a major tragedy in the family here, and all we can do is pray for them and pray for their children and spouses as well. And ask god to help us out in these difficult times. Mr. Mayor, your Police Spokesperson suggests to the viewing audience that they believe there are two other suspects who are somewhere on the run. First, do you know why they believe these other suspects exist . This is eyewitness report. And have they been able to bring anyone in for questioning that matches descriptions for whom youre searching . Youre absolutely right. Let me clarify im hearing two things. Theres one possible two is the wording were getting from some people. But obviously, you know, with the range of activities had and the shots being fired, we know that pretty much sure that at least there was another gunman there. Basically when you deal with police instincts, theyve been around enough gunfire to know when theres more than one shooting at them. So the police on scene believe bullets were coming from two Different Directions and thats the reason you believe there are two shooters, one is dead and one is missing . One, possibly two. Let me make that clear. They havent pinned down the exact number being two out there, but i know one for sure and theyre saying possibly two. Mr. Mayor, as horrific and unthinkable as dallas was, we have reason to believe that was one person sort of a solo flight out there of horror. This is another thing entirely, mr. Mayor. This suggests a conspiracy to murder Police Officers. Well, let me put it more bluntly, i think it was an ambush. Well, it certainly appears so from the reporting were getting, mr. Mayor. Correct me if im wrong, they were called to a suspicious person on airline highway with a gun. Bhen they got there they didnt find that. Instead they got ambushed. Yes, sir, without a doubt. And they planned this thing out. And i tell you what, its a sad commentary when people have no respect for life and have no respect for Police Officers, or have any respect for civilians in general. Do we have any sense for who the dead suspect is . Was he carrying an id . Did they have an idea who he was . Are they speaking with his family . Well, the fbi is working on that right now. As a matter of fact, not five minutes ago i received a call from the president who basically said we will give yall whatever resources yall need to get to the bottom of whats going on. Mr. Mayor, just thinking this through, you have a dead suspect, you have multiple dead officers and now you believe that a killer is on the loose in your town somewhere. Are there leads . Do they have any clue as to who this person might be . Or people . No, sir. They dont know who it is because, i mean, if they did it would make our investigation easier. I mean, they didnt even know the person who was shot and killed. So right now its like putting the pieces of a puzzle together to try to find who these individuals are. And try to find out what brought them to baton rouge, what other links are there links locally with the people who came in here thats indicating we need to also take a look at home before we go outside of our boundary lines to make a good case as to where this is coming from. Martha, its chilling what the mayor said, they were not in the concrete canyons of Downtown Dallas where noises were ricochetting off buildings, they were in a wide open place on a major roadway not densely populated near the Police Department. And the police who were there are confident that bullets were coming at them in more than one direction. And the mayor seems confident that there is at least one more killer out there somewhere if not two. Yeah. An ambush is the way that he described it, shepard, thanks. Steve rogers joins me now. Retired lieutenant detective for the nutley, new jersey Police Department, and also formerly served on the fbi terror task force. Steve, good to have you with us. You and i were chatting and you are pretty fired up about this decision by governor kasich, which has been discussed on twitter saying that the Police Association asked for them to suspend the open carry laws in ohio during the course of the convention. And were looking for a statement directly from the governor, but it has been reported by various sources that he has said he will not do that. Fired up is an understatement. Look, he sent a chilling message to every Police Officer across this country, you are on your own. And to the point of leadership, the police need our help. If the governor cant make the decision on his own, then use the process. You have to have a process. Declare state of emergency, go to whoever you have to go to, call the president. But my god, have the guts, the sheer guts to stand up for our Police Officers and protect them. Were talking about their lives. Were not talking about money. Were talking about their lives. So we need leaders to stand up and to please make the right decision for them. All right. What about it from the other side, people who say if this is the environment out there, if theres sort of a wild west mentality going on and gun owners say i want my gun with me to protect me in that kind of environment, thats going to be their argument. That will be their argument. Look, im a member of the nra. Im a Second Amendment guy, but i use common sense. You dont bring your gun to a volatile situation like that. Because it can it could become a wild west. But were looking out to save the lives of Police Officers. And we need our leaders in this country to have their sheer guts to stop being politically correct, dont worry about special interest groups, worry about the defenders. We the people now have to defend the defenders. And how we do that is we get to those who we elected to office, get on their backs, put a fire under their seats and tell them, look, the cops need our help and they need it now. Yeah. I mean, it strikes me that violence is violence no matter who is falling. There are americans who are aimed at each other for, you know, frightening reasons right now in this country. In terms of leadership, you know, we hear this so much, but from the top we know the president has been briefed on the situation. Thats all we know so far. What would you like to hear from him . Hes got to come out and make a very strong statement that enough is enough, were going to now put into place those mechanisms to help our police. Look, would you expect firefighters to fight fires without the best equipment that you can give them . The president needs to return to Police Departments the Tactical Equipment and military equipment they need to combat this. He needs to send the funding that is necessary to build from the bottom up. Thats your Community Policing mechanisms and intelligence and information. We need to hear from him. Im glad you brought that up. Because after ferguson there were criticisms against Police Departments for using tactical gear. And the feeling was that that had escalated the situation rather than quelled it. So now youve got a situation where Police Officers in plain sight dont have that gear on, but were told they have it at the ready on the outskirts because they feel that thats a better posture. Should we change that . Absolutely. Look, when you see that type of equipment that will run a chill up and down your spine. You be very careful, put military troops on the street and see what happens. That violence will be diminished because nobody wants a monkey, not to make it political, but donald trump has said it all, you have to be strong, tough and be well equipped so no one dares monkey with us. When you look at cleveland, what would you be doing at this point to sort of make this situation safe . You got to go, you know, place by place at this point. Well, right now i got to tell you theyve done a great job here in cleveland. Ive had to go through layers of security. So theyre doing a great job right now. I think what were all concerned about and the president of their police union said it is this open carry law. Help us. Because anybody look, a terrorist could walk into a crowd with a gun right now. And you know what, all he has to do is turn that gun on a bunch of people, hundreds could be killed before the police could ever react. So thats what they need right now. And its our belief that police shot and killed him. Were not 100 that it was police who shot and killed him, but we know hes been shot and shot and killed. Three other Law Enforcement officers were injured. One of those is said to be gravely ill at a hospital in baton rouge. There are some media organizations, not including this one, some media organizations reporting he had lost his he or she had lost his or her struggle. Martha, were waiting for this News Conference to begin. A little more than an hour from now, which might give us clear ideas of what is happening. Right now we dont know if the two people taken in for questioning are any way related to this. An it sounds like theres an active search very much underway. Yeah. It really is reminiscent of what we saw in dallas. We dont know if the outcome will be the same. There may indeed be other people involved in the situation. They are searching for them and they have questioned a couple. We remember from dallas that initially the feeling was gun fire was coming from several directions and that several people had to be involved. As i say, the same impression here that gun fire came from several directions and thats why they are continuing to look for people. Another similarity that is worth pointing out as we look at this attack on Police Officers in this country, once again, in dallas and now in baton rouge, is the deployment of the robot in order to resolve some of these situations. Once Police Officers have been taken down there is a reluctance to get close to the body or in the dallas case of the live suspect because they dont want to lose anymore Police Officers. A robot was deployed to get close to the body of the dead suspect to make sure he wasnt personally ladened with explosives that may blow up when investigators moved in to start to do what they would inevitably do, figure out what he had on him, see what i. D. He had on him and what they can learn about him going through his pockets to figure out what was on him. Thats something that was a factor here, as well. Look at the scene in baton rouge today. A city thats been under so much pressure remember they took in four individuals who they believed were fine with guns they had stolen from a pawnshop. The fourth person they arrested yesterday but this plot was cooking over the course of last week. That was a 12yearold boy they believed wanted to take part in that plan to kill Police Officers. That, we believe, is separate from this, although we dont know it is completely separate. It could have been an extended group. That is stuff we dont know at this point. They will continue to talk to those suspects and the ones they are searching for now. Its so sad wa we are watching unfold in this country. As we get ready to elect a new president , all of this is backdrop in the uneasy feeling that so Many Americans have in their guts about life in this country. About how it has changed. It is a sad testament when you have a convention that is basically locked down by thousands of Police Officers and steel rims and perimeters wherever you go, its not the world that so many of us grew up in anymore.
