And so every decision she made, she made, some were right, some were wrong, but every one was around the premise of making sure he was okay, that what he wanted to get done got done and sometimes she ran over very powerful aides in order to impose her will. There were occasions on the other hand, i know of at least one, where she was after the president to do something and she had reminded him for enough weeks in a row and he finally turned around and said, look, i got it. I know what you want. I know what you think. Im not doing that right now. Lets let it rest for a while. And she got the message and didnt bother him again until he ultimately a few weeks later made the decision she wanted. She pushed him, that probably would have made it harder. She did have this dignity about her, this grace, and there are some talking today about that dignity and grace and how it will affect now. Will her passing suddenly have an effect on this president ial campaign that as we reflect back on nancy reagan some im not sure can overwhelm the Popular Culture but she certainly much like Jackie Kennedy brought a level of class and a level of dignity that was remarkable and she adapted to washington. She was a creature of hollywood. She first arrived in the city that was pretty hostile to her. Gradually won the city over. I think the gridiron that she did this marvelous imitation of herself on film playing as somebody who was very poor and downandout and in a way that just charmed the entire audience and i think began to break the ice. She had an impeccable sense of what the first lady should be like and i think for Many Americans she was much like Jackie Kennedy an ideal that was what you wanted when the president went around the world. That the kind of first lady you wanted standing next to him meeting foreign leaders. And she sustained that with ease and i think with a great sense of class. Mr. Speaker, thank you for your time here. Final thought as we wrap up and look towards what will be a funeral, likely something here in washington and definitely something at the library in simi valley. Well, my thoughts would be she personified patriotism as an oldfashioned kind. She literally sacrificed what could have been a very easy life of leisure in order to help her husband serve the country. She sustained that through her work at the library up to the day she died. Mr. Speaker, thanks for the time. Thank you. This is a statement from president clinton. He says hillary and i were deeply saddened to learn of Nancy Reagans passing. Nancy was an extraordinary woman, a gracious first lady, proud mother, and devoted wife to president reagan, her ronnie. Her strength of character was legendary particularly when tested by the attempted assassination of the president and throughout his battle with alzheimers. She leaves a remarkable legacy of good that includes her tireless advocacy for Alzheimers Research and the foster grand parent program. We join all americans in extending our prayers and condolences to her beloved children and her entire family during this difficult time. President bill clinton and Hillary Clinton. Nancy reagan died of congestive Heart Failure this morning at her home in california. William . Reporter brett, this is Nancy Reagans home here. The reagans bought this in 1988, almost 30 years. It is the same estate where Ronald Reagan died in 2004, as you said, nancy died some time early this morning. She was 94 years old. I want to give you a look around very quickly at where were at. We are in a pretty exclusive r area of los angeles, its bel air next to brentwood. You can see there are basely 10 to 12 foot fences here. The police have closed the road so you dont have any looky loos. Only media have arrived for the most part. As we pan over here this is the only entrance to the property that we know of here. A hearse arrived here 9 30 this morning. Many are waiting for that hearse to leave as well. Weve had about Three Friends and family arrive. We know that some nurses left earlier this morning before we arrived as well as one other vehicle and that is a hyphens next to a neighbors property as well. We have spoken to the Reagan Library and have been told that Funeral Services will be held for mrs. Reagan later this week there will be a viewing at a closed casket. Certifica services will be on the patio and then she will be buried next to her husband, Ronald Reagan. There was also, earlier today, a neighbor seemed to arrive with three bouquets of flowers, gave them to an officer, and then that officer took them to the front residence and handed them, we believe, to a member of the secret service. She was known, of course, nancy, for many things, having been a close confidant of the president , a close adviser as well. Her just so you know campaign, she wrote her memoir my turn in 1989 and released the love letters ronald had written to her. They were married 52 years. We are told, brett, to get details later this week from the Reagan Library exactly when those services will be held and how the public will be able to pay their respects. Back to you. Quickly, she was not out and about as much in recent weeks. We did see her it at the last gop debate out there, but she had not been out and about that much lately, right . Reporter right. In the last probably five or ten years, probably five years at least, she really stayed out of the public eye pretty much all together unless it was for some kind of a special circumstance at the library or one particular event. Really very much out of the public view. I will say that earlier arthel had a guest on who was her personal trainer and said that nancy had very bad eyesight. And when we saw People Holding her up, it wasnt because she was frail or in bad shape but she couldnt see that well. At the house she got around pretty well. It might have been deceiving exactly how frail she was when we did see her in public. Brett . Outside the bel air estate of nancy reagan. Thank you. Lets bring in a Fox News National security analyst who worked at the pentagon during the reagan administration. She served as Deputy Assistant secretary of defense for Public Affairs from 1982 to 1985. K. T. , your thoughts on this day . People will talk about what a gracious first Lady Nancy Reagan was, the power behind the throne, but i look at it slightly differently. She played a huge role in ending the cold war. Why . Because president reagan wanted the soviet union but it was totally farfetched. It would never have happened. So president reagan set about in his first term to fix americas economy, to rebuild american defenses, and then nancy reagan, at the end of reagans first term, was the power behind the throne, urging reagan to take a new direction. To reach out to the soviet union, to find a way to have arms control agreement. She lobbied secretary of state george schultz. She lobbied the chair of the chief white house steve of staff james baker. And she lobbied her husband, president reagan. And as a result right before reagans reelection in september of 1984, president reagan invited the soviet foreign minister to a working lunch at the white house. And when nancy reagan received him, he bent down and whispered in her ear, he said, mrs. Reagan, does your husband want peace . And she said, yes, of course. And he said, well, mrs. Reagan, every night when you go to bed, whisper in his ear peace, peace, peace. She went out without a beat said im whispering in your ear, mr. Foreign minister, peace, peace, peace. He later told that story many times but it was the first indication that the United States and president reagan personally wanted a new direction with the soviet union. Its an interesting story. I mean, she had an amazing influence inside that white house, and youre saying it extended to foreign affairs. Yes, but not in a public way. Not in a way that she wanted to have her own role. She played a behindthescenes role. Mrs. Reagan throughout especially throughout the second term of president reagans years in the white house, she was very much a leader in that new direction that he would take. She offered her role as a wife, as a supporter, as a confidant but, also, as receiving the gorbachevs to the white house, going to moscow with the president in a new era. K. T. Mcfarland, thank you for the time. Thank you. President obama and mrs. Obama saying nancy reagan redefined the role of serving as first lady. Leland vittert is at the white house today. Lela leland . Reporter in the role as first lady, but she then helped future first ladies. And we saw that in the president and mrs. Obamas statement here in the past couple of minutes saying in part nancy reagan once wrote that nothing could prepare you for living in the white house. She was right, of course, but we had a head start because we were fortunate to benefit from her proud example and her warm and generous advice. Our former first lady redefined the role in her time here and weve learned and weve known for a while that nancy reagan played a real role in the way that Michelle Obama handles herself as first lady. They had a number of phone conversations. Theyd have lunch together at the white house and talked about this role of first lady. As Michelle Obama transitioned from that in 2008 and 2009 to taking over the white house here. And nancy reagan is really known from her time at the white house for filling three roles as first lady. She obviously had the style and the pomp and the circumstance brought a degree of elegance back to the white house whether it be with how she dressed, the parties she threw, at times controversy in terms of redecorating the white house, asking for private donations for those things and for china and those kinds of things and raising funds to change the white house in its interior. She was also known as the president s protector and some could say closest adviser as he knew that she only had his best interests at heart. Obviously after the assassination attempt on president reagan she was instrumental in changing a lot of security that surrounded the president and those kinds of things. Weve heard about that over the time and her role not only as protecting him politically but in that sense and, lastly, she had her own policy initiatives. She was so involved in the brady law, obviously after james brady, the press secretary who was shot during that assassination attempt. She played a huge role in the just say no drug campaign. Raising awareness of homelessness and those kinds of things. And the president then spoke out even about her work at the state of the union address. The war against drugs is a war of individual battles, a crusade with many heroes including americas young people and also someone very special to me. She has helped so many of our young people to say no to drugs. Nancy, much credit belongs to you and i want to express to you your husbands pride and your countrys thanks. Reporter and she really took a leading role in that campaign whether it be speaking engagements and those kinds of things and beginning to develop this policy and the just say no movement turned into the d. A. R. E. Movement, education in schools, those kinds of things as well, and obviously, brett, we watched so much of the imagery as it related to the goodbye to Ronald Reagan. There they are waving from marine one, but after Ronald Reagans death, and as you pointed out that iconic picture as the sunset out in california as she said goodbye to Ronald Reagan, she then doubled down on her efforts to try and stop the disease that robbed her of the man she loved so much and his memory, instrumental in Alzheimers Research for so long saying that after Ronald Reagan died, she said ronnies long journey has finally taken him to a distant place where i can no longer reach him and certainly expressed attitude for president obama lifting the stem cell research. Time is short. Life is precious. She was a big proponent even after president reagans death of trying to end the disease that took him. Brett . Leland vittert at the white house, leland, thank you. Just to show you how this is crossing political lines, the democratic governor of california, governor jerry brown saying she lived a remarkable life and will be remembered for her strength and grace on behalf of all californians. We extend our deepest condolences to the reagan family. Weve had statements from all political candidates as well as Bernie Sanders in just the past few minutes on the death of nancy reagan. Stay with us. Our special remembrance of nancy reagan continues after this short break. E infamous traitor. And i know a thing or two about trading. Wr it reminded me again of how gre grateful ronnie and i are for the privilege you in america gave us for the wonderful eight years in the white house. [ applause ] it also reminded me of the life that you gave us before that starting with the governorship of california. [ applause ] a life a life that we never thought wed have. It was interesting. It was challenging. It was fascinating. It was sometimes frightening. There were times it seemed the sun forgot to shine. But those days have dimmed in comparison to the accomplishments that now glow brightly and the remembrance of the warmth and support from so many of you across america. That was nancy reagan speaking at the august 1996 Republican National convention. Joining us now on the phone is the executive director of the Ronald Reagan president ial foundation and library in simi valley, california. John, thanks for being here. Your thoughts on this day . Great to be with you, brett. First my thoughts, what a remarkable speech. I was on the floor of the convention when she gave those remarks and they still touch me to this day. Like a lot of people ive had the chance, the fortunate chance to work closely with mrs. Reagan just literally up to the past few weeks. Its a real sad day here. Weve lost somebody special. But, you know, i think in her final years she used to say to me on occasion maybe it was her time to join ronnie and here we found that day. I know theyre both blessed up in heaven. Are there plans that have been laid out for this eventuality . Yeah, there are. You know, the good news is while shes been in pretty tough physical health the last year, mentally shes been in just 110 and weve always had a plan for this day and now its time, sadly, to put the plan in place and so over the course of the next four to five days youll see a lot of announcements and activities and things like that, but shell be buried right alongside president reagan here at the library. Thats where people will have a chance to at some point this week time to be determined but have a chance to see her lying in repose and then there will be the Burial Service at the end of the week. She had a remarkable life, an actress at first, then meeting her husband, first lady of california, and then eventually obviously the first lady of our nation. What is something people wouldnt know about her . You dealt with her at the library a lot and you said even just a few weeks ago but what is something that maybe the public doesnt really know about nancy reagan . I would say a warmth and a grace that you can see up close which might be difficult to discern from a distance. An example would be, you know, when she first hired me, oh, six years ago, i had lunch with her and i was as nervous as you can imagine. She did everything she could to put me at ease and use the sense of humor and just such a graciousness that its so hard to expect from someone as important and as historical as that person might be. Like many other great people, the closer you get to her, to nancy reagan, the more you fall in love with her and she was just such a warm and inviting person. That was probably, to me, the most interesting thing to see. If you havent im talking now to the viewers, if you havent been to the Reagan Library, you should make the trip. It is a beautiful place and it is scenic and historic and now even more special. John, thank you for the time. A final thought, if you would, on this day for people to leave with. Well, brett, actually maybe its a little bit about you and that is you were so nice to come out to us a little while ago with your book special heart and i nknow mrs. Reagan wasnt sitting in the front row. She hasnt done that for a couple of years, but she watched your entire performance the past night and were just so happy to have had her for the time that weve had. John, we appreciate your time and our condolences. Thanks so much, brett. Nancy reagan first came into the National Spotlight as a Hollywood Star let, but the role she will be most remembered for, of course, was as her husbands closest adviser and fiercest protector. Lets take a look back at her remarkable life. Nancy was born in new york city on july 6th, 1921. Her parents kenneth and edi divorced soon afterwards and she was raised by her mother, an actress, and had little contact with her father. In 1929 edi married dr. Loyal davis moving the family to chicago. She had a stepfather that she was extremely fond of, a very strict on accomplished man. Not everyones cup of tea. Nancy changed her name to davis. Nancy followed in her mothers acting footsteps. She graduated from Smith College in 1943 with a drama degree and moved to new york city. She appeared in plays before moving to hollywood and would ultimately appear in 11 films. Look at me, please. Reporter in the fall of 1949 a trade paper reported nancy had communist ties. In her 1989 memoir she explained how a director friend asked the president of her union to help. Late that afternoon the phone rang, nancy davis, this is Ronald Reagan from the screen actors guild, i have some answers for you. If youre free for dinner tonight, perhaps we could talk about it then. Well, i stammered, i think i can manage it. Nancy would describe the meeting as not exactly love at first sight but pretty close. The pair had a simple secret meddimed i wedding in 1952. Nancy has said she thought she married an actor, but she soon realized his real love was working with the Republican Party. Ronnie saw a fresh pace, a popular known figure with no ties to washington and a reputation for integrity. He ran for governor, won by a landslide, and nancy served from 1967 to 1975 as first lady of california. The reagans had been married nearly three decades when they moved into the white house and nancy later admitted her years in sacramento did little to prepare her for the national stage. She once told me looking back on the first year, you know, i thought as having been the wife of the governor of the state of california for eight years that i had a pretty good handle on what the press interest would be. They called the former actress queen nancy. Nancy reagan had this image that didnt accurate ly portray her but it was very regal above others. But her priorities quickly shifted. I spent a good deal of time with her that day, and she was definitely in shock. She was very quiet. From then on the president s safetyecame her utmost priority. She kept an eye on his travels and although criticized turned to astrology for guidance. Then came one of her most defining moments. Just say no. She really felt for the parents of kids who were using drugs. I know when letters would come in from parents, really heartbreaking stories, she would take pen and paper and write a personal response. When it came to policy, nancy, for the most part, kept her distance. She admitted to weighing in on occasion most notably with the chief of staff. She thought he was ineffective and was eventually ousted. But first and foremost, she was a wife. Ronald reagan and nancy reagan were a team. There was no question about it. You seldom saw them when they werent holding hands. They genuinely preferred to be with each other than anyone else. The reagans lived a private life after they retired to california, something nancy had looked forward to after all those years in politics. I think she just relaxed as a person. I dont think she missed it all that much. The enormous pressure, i think there was a relief at getting through to ron, honestly. In 1994 the former president revealed he had alzheimers disease, a battle he would lose ten years later. It was what she described as the long goodbye, how difficult that was for her. I think she did it with great dignity. I think she preserved his dignity. Its a part of her legacy, something she will always be remembered for. Nancy lived quietly after the president s passing appearing at events honoring her husband. The statue is a wonderful likeness of ronnie, and he would be so proud. And he proud of her. While the woman the secret Service Called rainbow is now gone, her time as first lady remains an indelible part of history. Not only to her country but to her husband. Adam housley, fox news. Well, that does it for our special remembrance of former first Lady Nancy Reagan. After the break, we will join Fox News Sunday in progress. Be sure to join me for a special town hall in detroit with Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. That is tomorrow night 6 00 p. M. Eastern time. But today is about remembering the life of form er first Lady Nancy Reagan. This is the image of her after president reagans funeral touching the casket. Now she is with the love of her life and will be buried next to him in simi valley. Nancy reagan was 94. Its your home. Its everything youve always wanted. And you work hard to keep it that way. Aleve pm is the only one to combine a safe sleep aid plus the 12 hour pain relieving strength of aleve. Im back. Aleve pm for a better am. Marco rubio had a very, very bad night and personally id call for him to drop out of the rates. I think its time now that he drop out of the race. I would love to take on ted oneonone. That would be so much fun. Ours is the only campaign that has repeatedly beaten donald trump and, indeed, were the only campaign that can and will beat donald trump in this race. Donald trump and ted cruz calling for a twoman race after they each won two states last night. Its time now for our sunday group. Syndicated columnist george will, julie pace, who covers the white house and the campaign for the associated press, mike duhaime, who was a top adviser to governor Chris Christies president ial campaign, and charles lane from the washington post. George, what do you make of this weeks developments, trumps continued march towards the nomination, romney this escalating talk about the Republican Party tearing itself apart . I think we may have passed peak trump, as it will be known. I dont think mr. Romney was under any illusions he was going to talk trumps supporters out of supporting him. He knows the axiom you cannot reason people out of a position they have not been reasoned into. But we now set his speech sets up a very interesting phenomenon. If mr. Trump is the nominee, he will be opposed by the most recent republican nominee. No way romney could support him, which sort of fits because the republican nominee will have said the most recent republican president should have been impeached which gives you a sense of the chaos. Our parties are not flimsy things. Democratic party is the oldest party in the world, the republican and democratic parties have been framing this debate in this country for 160 years. What the Republican Party needs to avoid blowing up is to get a binary choice between mr. Trump and someone else. I think the evidence that were approaching that is the fact that ted cruz announced late last week hes going to open ten offices in the state of florida. Hes probably not doing that to win florida. Hes probably doing that to prevent marco rubio from winning it. If that happens, indeed, youve got your binary choice, you have the best chance of not settling this in cleveland where, what you outlined with rush limbaugh, trump has the majority of the largest share of delegates but not a majority, then he would have a blowout. Mike, let me turn to you. We saw last nights results, picking up on what george said, trump wins two states, cruz wins two states, kasich and rubio win nothing, trump calling on rubio to drop out, is this, in effect, not officially but in effect now a twoman race . I think weve gotten to that point. I dont think well know for sure until march 15, governor kasich and senator rubio have each put a premium on winning his home state. Theyll have to win that to stay in. The moment where it gets to be a twoperson race. Senator cruz has had enough success now i think hes in and will be in for the long haul and if either governor kasich or senator rubio win their home state youll have at least three now marching for a long piece in which the effect really is ultimately just to stop trump from getting the majority of delegates. What do you think of cruzs idea of going into florida . Maybe not to beat but to win the state, winner take all, but to take down rubio so that it becomes cruz and trump . Very smart. The goal for anybody who wasnt donald trump during this Campaign Going back six, seven months was to get to a point you can be oneonone against donald trump. I think ted cruz is very smart to do this. This is a fourway game of chase as opposed to 17 like it was in the beginning. Its a really smart move to get to that oneonone. What about trump, this wasnt part of the clip we ran, but he said i want a twoman race against cruz because when we go to the northeast, places like new york or we go to pennsylvania or we go out to california, im going to beat cruz badly. I think hes right. I think he wants that as well. I think hes gotten to the point he feels he can go up as well. I think also you have to show that level of confidence that youre not afraid of what everybody else is shooting for and he will have an advantage over ted cruz in some of those states and right now he has a significant delegate advantage and if he does win florida and 99 delegates there he will continue to widen the margin. Then there was the fox Republican Debate this week. Heres a clip. Breathe, breathe, breathe. You can do it. You can breathe. I know its hard. I know its hard but just when theyre done with the yoga, can i answer a question . Oh, boy. Julie, i know that youre covering the campaign but you also talked to folks at the white house and you talked to the democrats, too, on the campaign trail. What do they make of trump . What do they make of all of the theatrics that were seeing, some would say kind of low brow and do they think that the republicans are just handing them the presidency, or do they actually worry about the appeal that trump has seen and his ability to bring in new voters . I think youve seen an evolution in the way democrats view trump. Initially there was a sense this was such a gift to democrats, if they could just let trump stay in the race and continue to say these things that would alienate a lot of voters democrats need in the general election this would be a huge gift and basically give Hillary Clinton essentially the presidency. The shift that youve seen, though, comes from watching republicans handle trump and this realization that you cant just give him a pathway and let him selfdestruct, and right now you have groups around Hillary Clinton and inside the Hillary Clinton campaign that are preparing for a general election matchup with him and taking it very seriously looking at his business record, at things hes been saying about women, about minorities, and they would run an Aggressive Campaign because they just dont know what would happen. You kind of have to take every assumption we have about politics and throw it out the window, and you have to look at the math in a potentially different way. I wouldnt say that they are worried to the point they think hillary could lose but preparing for a tough campaign. What do they make of the fact whether you like him or not this huge Enthusiasm Gap with record turnout and republican primary after primary and not particularly strong turnout in the democratic contest . Absolutely. This is going to be a turnout game in the general election no matter who the nominees of the party are, you have to turn out your base. And trump is showing an ability to energize people to get them to show up at the polls. We all know Hillary Clinton had some problems with her likability, factors that make people want to get out and vote for you and so they know that this would be an issue for her. I think republicans having lost the popular vote in five out of the last six elections, the race against ted cruz is more traditional. The race with donald trump is very much out there. Hes an x factor. You think trump would be a tougher candidate for the democrats to beat than chris . I dont know hell be tougher in the long run but its hard for them to tell who would be tougher. Chuck, i want to go back to our basic question at the beginning of the program, is all the talk about the Republican Party tearing itself apart . Is that overblown or is the party of lincoln, the party that started in 1860, is it in real jeopardy . I would say its in real jeopardy in two ways. The first way is just prospects for the general election. If you look at the most recent gallop poll numbers, the most popular figure is marco rubio. And during this entire process all the fire of all the candidates and all the money aimed at marco rubio and destroying marco rubio and the two people left standing, ted cruz and donald trump, have the worst favorability going into november. So thats problem one. Problem two is just the ideas, the ideology and coherence and messaging of the party have been scrambled by this campaign. If youre down ballot in the Republican Party, if youre running for senate, if youre running for congress, even state legislature, you have no idea whos going to be the top of your ticket and what youre who your partner at the top of the ticket is going to be. Its destabilized. I wouldnt say split or broken. That remains to be seen. It has completely destabilized the party in a year they really had going in pretty good prospects, a real chance of taking the presidency. How does a party i know you say a party is a strong structure and has gone through various permutations but how does a party survive, the two leading candidates, trump and cruz who are saying theyre corrupt and theyre going to change things. It survives by planning ahead. In case mr. Trump is nominee, there are reliable reports Republican Senatorial candidates, incumbents and otherwise are planning to distance themselves even with ads taking on the man at the top of the ticket. Second so youre saying republican attack ads against the republican nominee . Distancing ads. Second, the Republican Party will have to rethink the business of having open primaries and caucuses. 7 of the 19 events so far have been closed, trump has lost five of them. So the question is, is this a hostile takeover of the Republican Party and the republicans have to think whether they have to go forward year after year vulnerable to this. All right. Panel, we have to take a break here. When we come back, a new twist in the Hillary Clinton email scandal. What could it mean for her nomination . Plus, what would you like to ask the panel about the fbi investigation of clintons emails . Just go to facebook or twitter foxnewssunday. We may use your question on the air. I am thrilled were adding to our pledge delegate count. Im grateful to everyone who turned out to support us but now all eyes turn to michigan. Bernie sanders and Hillary Clinton reacting to a split verdict in three races saturday night, sanders picked up wins in two caucus states. In kansas he won with 68 and in nebraska with 56 . But Hillary Clinton won the louisiana primary with 71 . And that takes the overall Democratic Delegate count to 1,121 for clinton, 479 for sanders, 2,383 still needed to win the nomination. And were back now with the panel. Well, this week the Justice Department granted immunity to a fellow named Bryan Pagliano, a former state department staffer, former clinton 2008 staffer, who set up clintons private email server. Here is what ted cruz had to say about that. Listen, i think it is an Ominous Development for Hillary Clinton. When he flips and goes to the feds, it aint good for fat tony. I love political discourse. Chuck, you are our legal analyst on this panel. How big a deal is this grant of criminal immunity for this guy who set up her server . To what degree does that show clinton has legal exposure here criminal legal exposure . I dont often agree with ted cruz but i think in his own colorful way he summarized it pretty well. If the fbi were not worried or serious or didnt think there was much of a case here they wouldnt have put all the effort into striking Bryan Pagliano to find out what he knows. Hes the guy who had his hands on this machine, knew the whole setup of the server and et cetera, et cetera. And it tells me that they are mounting a real investigation, that they are concerned there was criminal activity if not by hillary herself but her aides, which would almost be as bad for her and so it just reconfirms the situation that weve known all along. She has this cloud over her head. And it is not a safe situation to be in as a president ial nominee. She keeps talking about this is just a security review, its not a criminal investigation. You dont give immunity to someone from criminal prosecution unless thats at least, not that its going to happen, but its out there. That is correct. He had, of course, taken the fifth on the hill. So he, himself, feared criminal exposure which is revealing in itself. We ask you for questions for the panel and we got this on facebook from jeff goldstein. He writes, what is going to be the process to get a new democratic nominee when clinton is indicted and forced out . Truly jeff is obviously jumping the gun a bit here, but is there any talk in the white house about a worse case scenario, that she gets indicted, either before or after a nomination . Theres a lot of active talk about that scenario right now. You have to remember the white house has really come down on the side of Hillary Clinton. They think she has handled the situation poorly. They think it was a mistake for her to have a private server in her house. The president of the United States has come out and said theres nothing thats going to come out in an investigation that will prove to be criminal. I think the bigger question for hillary, she has gotten a free pass in the democratic primary on this issue because Bernie Sanders stood down. She will not get a free pass in a general election. And if you actually look at her answers that have evolved over several months, she still doesnt have a good answer. Shes apologized and has almost walked the apology back at times. I think she will be under a microscope in a way she hasnt been in the democratic primary. But, to the best of your knowledge and youre a very good reporter, no plan b out there. Nobody even suggesting, well, what if . No. I mean, i havent heard any active talk about that. Mike, all right, lets talk about what if the general election ends up as trump versus clinton . Ted cruz made a big deal of this in the debate and he pointed out Hillary Clinton may have her problems but ted cruz has his problems. He has this civil suit over Trump University and he also pointed out that trump gave a lot of money to clinton in 2008. How much of a problem would that be for trump . I think if its not going to be a problem it will be even less of a problem during the general election. It will cause some issues but in some way it will help donald trump run back to the middle in the way another republican wouldnt. In a way to get more moderate votes. People havent talked about that yet. But if that hasnt sunk in in the republican primary i dont think it will in the general. Its interesting because there are moments in this debate, the Republican Debate, when trump seems to be already pivoting a little bit to a general election strategy. He says, no, the abortion aspect is all over the line, but planned parenthood does a lot of good things for women. He talks about being flexible about immigration. Are you interested in that . I have to think that you must see that pivot as his at least leaving the door open to how he would appeal and walk back some of the positions hes taking. It shows the confidence level where he is in terms of marching towards the nomination and i think he will be somebody his positions during the republican primary have been hard to pin down. That may alienate some on the right. Thats why he poses more of a conundrum to the Democratic Party than a ted cruz does. George, short of the legal problems with her server, with the emails, the handling of classified information, is there anything in a practical sense, obviously Bernie Sanders is running, anything that can stop Hillary Clinton from getting the democratic nomination . I dont think so but look what mr. Sanders is doing. Hes running a campaign thats Strong Enough to repute its own cause. The premise of the campaign is big money dominates this. He raised 42. 7 million in february. She raised 30 million. And he did it with small contributions. What this means is he can lose and lose and lose and live off the land. Hes he going to continue this in this protracted struggle, if it can be called a struggle, were either going to see her become a better candidate through practice, or were going to find out the more people see her the more they dont really like her. The other thing, george, sanders is doing, very subtle way is sowing the seeds of the Trump Campaign against hillary because hes pounding the message about the iraq war. Hes pounding the message about trade. Hes pounding the message about all the things that went on with nafta and china during the first clinton administration, the clinton administrations, excuse me, and they are all themes trump has been hammering and can pick up in states like michigan and ohio. My belief if its trump against hillary, he will run to her left to scoop up the disaffected sanders votes. As the republican nominee . Yes. On the populous message . On the populous message that the game is rigged, that the i understand capitalism and i understand youre all getting the short end of the stick and i can fix it. As long as were jumping way ahead and not with being march or april or even the convention, lets go ahead to the fall, mike, both clinton and trump have very high, unfavorable numbers. Their waters are under water. More people dislike them than like them. Will we be looking forward to a totally negative campaign in which each side would convince you hate the other guy even more than us. Yes. I think you will see a fairly negative campaign. They will have to give people a reason to vote for them. Theyre both so well known and, quite frankly, such high negatives, it is going to be very much, i think, a negative campaign. I dont think theres any real way around that. Because of that each campaign will try to move up their own favorables. Julie . I agree with mike. When you talk about base turnout elections youre talking about a different scenario than when both sides are fighting where you have to moderate and you have to have costs over appeal. I think Hillary Clinton is going to need to turn out hispanics, black voters, young people. Donald trump will look, if he is the nominee, to turn out some of these disaffected sanders voters. If ted cruz is the nominee, he will look to turn out conservative white voters who maybe have stayed home in past elections. This will be both parties pulling towards their base. The trump antiwashington message that has worked so well during the primary will continue pretty seamlessly into the general. You saw president obama with that type of success in 2008 with the same message went ahead. The antiwashington message works well. We have less than 30 seconds left. Talk because obviously the country is turning more to people of color, more minorities, that trumps chance would be that hed have to get a super turnout from whites and especially white men. I think thats right. Hed have to do better with minorities than now. Thats a problem for the Republican Party. Im just saying it sounds like a november in which both major parties are telling their voters what to fear from the other side. Man, that is a spirited way to end the discussion. Thank you panel. As we go on the trail. Im a unifier, i know people will find that hard to believe but, believe me, i am a unifier. Have you seen his hand . Theyre like this. And you know what they say about men with small hands. He wanted to be don rickles and it hasnt worked because hes gone down. If donald isnt the nominee in all likelihood hillary becomes the next president of the United States. Hello, gophers, i hope you will gopher me. Do you need a haircut . I want us to be a country where we are reaching out to one another again. What this campaign is about is saying, you know what, we can create the nation we want to become. If we republicans choose donald trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished. He failed miserably and it was an embarrassment to everybody including the Republican Party. Make him the president of the United States of america. Believe me, i know this is not a game. I know whats happening with the economy. You dont know. Then answer the economy question. You havent employed in your life one person. Release the tape. Youre the one. Welcome to sunday morning fewer tours. Trump still the frontrunner. After last night you can see cruz is nipping at his heels with 300 delegates to trumps 3 2. Marco rubio trailed behind with 128. John kasich has 35. The battleground states of florida and ohio still lie ahead, of course, where rubio and kasich are placing high
