a decade after the twin towers attacks. new buildings finished in two years' time. the iconic skyline in manhattan remains uncomplete to this day. on that fateful morning 3,000 people died in new york at the pentagon in washington and in shanksville, pennsylvania. after exhaustive studies by congress and the 9/11 commission, there are questions we are still asking today. who really helped the 19 men? who helped them to move around our country largely undetected? and was this man american born cleric anwar al-awlaki at the center of the plot of 9/11? is he the new bin laden? we begin our report with catherine herridge. january 5th, 2000. malaysia. in a condo overlooking a beautifully designed golf course usama bin laden operatives including these future hijackers gathered for a meeting. the purpose? discuss details of the upcoming plots of to bomb the "u.s.s. cole" in the golf of aden. it was a terror summit. since the 1998 palming withs of the u.s. embassies in kenya and tanzania. phone calls made from a specific house in yemen. it was some 60 miles outside the capital. the house was usama bin laden's operations center. the call came in and the two saudis who would hijack american airlines flight 77 that would slam into the pentagon headed for the country club. photos were taken at the summit which remain classified to this kay. -- day. >> i remember the pictures as clear as this day. >> assigned to work with the cia's usama bin laden unit known as alex station. >> that meeting was surveilled because there had been a communication from alec station station -- station. these people were coming in. take their photographs. see what they are doing, where they are going. that's what happened. we had no idea what they were doing. but they knew some of them had visas to the u.s. >> but then the krier refused to share those with other agencies such as the border patrol walk in to the united states los angeles airport a week after the summit of terrorism concluded. >> we blew it basically. >> we blew it with that advance notice, we could have gotten our alistening device in the condominium unit. george tenet, the director of cia just said that al qaeda, bin laden was number one priority agency and that every effort should be given to corralling them before they attacked us former senator bob gram co-chaired with period goes congressional attacks of 9/11. this is a based on 300 interviews and 22 hearings which finished in december of 2002. it dove deeply into intelligence activities before and after the attacks gram wrote intelligence matters and new novel keys to the kingdom. >> that was one of the recurring neems of 9/11 that is the right hand not talking to the left hand. >> this is probably the most painful things about me or things that i regret. i cannot tell the bureau about what we were talking about. without getting approval from the bosses at alex station to tell the fbi because it was cia protected information only. after the summit finished hosni and medar arrived lax via bangkok. unlike usama bin laden who was from a wealthy saudi family, familiar with the west, that's a 14-year-old bin laden on family vacation in 1971, these two saudis had never been to america. >> what's so significant about these two. >> they were the first of the 19 to come into the united states. number two, they almost immediately began receiving substantial assistance from the saudi government or representatives of the saudi. a saudi citizen living in san francisco was one of the first people to help the hijackers on our shores. in this highly redacted fbi document, the then 42-year-old had been in the u.s. on a student visa since 1993. >> is there any record that omar was a student in the united states? >> he professed that he was a student. i checked with the university that he said he had attended, they had no record of his having been a student there. >> as a reporter for the san diego tribune, kelly thornton was aware of him. >> he was very well known in the community and was thought to be by some saudi spy, kind of spoiling on other sawed can is by the saudi government. he often had a video camera. >> he was also collecting a salary as a ghost employee for ircan subindividual area for the audi aviation. >> when he comes from from san diego. culture political and cultural affairs in we don't know what happened in the one hour meeting that they had. as soon as the meeting was over, by umi and his driver ended up at a restaurant next to two drivers. it led to byumi which asked if they would be interested in relocating from los angeles to san diego. >> how likely is it that someone is going to have a chance meeting with two hijackers. >> there were 134 middle eastern restaurants in january of 2007. we had a statistician do a probability that four people would end up at the same place at the same time. and it was in the four, maybe to 1 category. >> 5 million to one? >> yeah. >> remember. the first two hijackers here know nothing about getting around california and speak no english. but the ever helpful byumi had something to mind. he listed the help of abdullah who is was a student at small community college. kelly thornton is one of the people who interviewed. >> he told me he was the one though ask him to do that modar was fluent in english and the hijackers didn't speak so well. he was asked to help them get driver's license, social security numbers, that kind of thing. >> though the hijackers walked into our country legally. abdelah's entry into the u.s. from canada was anything but legal. >> he presents his yemeni passport as his proof of citizenship. shortly after receiving his u.s. visa, he travels to san diego and within a week of his arrival, he has filed an application for asylum, claiming to be a citizen of somalia fleeing% could you persecution. he further says that he entered the united states through new york, utilizing a fraudulent italian prance port in the name of thank depolo. >> right. this is within a four month time period. >> they took them here, he has been a flight instructor for 26 years. >> why do you believe that plane is the plane they flew. >> this was the only cessna we had at the time. if they flown the cessna that was the birds right there. >> what was it like flying in the same feeling. >> at first it waziristan a. >> they moved by here to buy the san diego. sign the lease. burred on page 517 in a footnote in the 9/11 commission report is a reference to four phone calls in february 4th, 2007 between omar al buyi and al awlaki. >> i was aware that she had had contact with al qaeda in the past. >> the author of jihad show has filed a qunchts he was involved in suspicious charities. they had cut the investigation shortly before the hijackers arrived. they decided al awlaki was not worth investigating anymore. >> what was the relationship like between al awlaki and the two in san diego. >> the assumption was that it was a close relationship and that awlaki may have been the few -- shared with what they were there for and the plot of 9/11 was going to be. >> it was a time period, you know, was analyzing phone numbers. >> in exclusive interview with w. fox news. criminal investigator in new jersey jim bush explained how he discovered the lengths in phone numbers. >> there is a phone number to a phone listed to anwar al-awlaki from again have, colorado. the same day that he said i took them from there and i assistth getting from the department. >> who that phone call was between is a speculation. you can make a rational conclusion that there was contact at that time. >> who was at a welcoming party that byumi through in san diego. was al alight 93 memorial. what will you do this september 11th? >> the first two hijackers took to living large in san diego courtesy of byumi's wallet. >> the lifestyle became very expensive. among other things, they liked to go to bars. they spent a lot of money. in fact, hosni at one point wanted to marry one of the strippers that he had met at the bar. >> buymi was subject of counter terrorism investigation or inquiry by the fbi. lo and behold ends up being really very helpful. >> from work for congressional inquiry eleanor hill remembers details that now shine a brighter light on the u.s. support network. >> and buyumi has phone calls with al awlaki on the day apartment. >> joint inquiry states there is no bank documentation that supports the reimbursement of the moneys to al aayoumi paid them on the spot. >> our investigation did not find any record to support the argument that they had reimbursed bayoumi. >> he held a party for the hijackers and he videotaped that party. >> he had one party to introduce hosni and mitar to inner circle. >> the cameraman was a wealthy 22-year-old from california clayton morgan. he was searching for life's answers in radical islam as he became known as caisson bendon. is he trust fund kid grew up wealthy. >> i tried to under the freedom of information act. the fbi refused. said it was being used in ongoing investigation. if there is ongoing investigation of anybody on thap tax certainly it would seem that anwar al-awlaki would be a likely candidate. >> i wouldn't be surprised if he was at that earth pavment al awlaki certainly was connected to these guys. he was sort of a spiritual mentor of them while they were on the mosque border. i was told they would go behind closed doors and have private sessions together. >> in a bizarre twist, soon after that party. the two hijackers changed addresses and moved into this home with this fbi informant. >> a very important figure in this plot who had recently gone through a very difficult divorce and had a large vacant house sad re sheik still living in california. he was indian born muslim claiming he had doctorate and occasionally taught english at local community colleges. fox news could not confirm where he taught english and where he got his degree. while the congressional inquiry wrote about sheik. the 9/11 commission did not. even though commission investigators interviewed him. in a sense he was doing for the united states what he was doing in saudi arabia. you had the two of the future hijackers living in the home of a paid fbi asset. did he ever report his people to the fbi? >> he told me that he mentioned their first pain. >> he was one of the several people that was never made available to our inquiry. >> why did the fbi deny you access? >> the asset program was so sensitive that they didn't want to have any disclosure. now, i found that to be rather disingenuous answer given the fact that this man was being paid rather handsomely he got a severance payment of $100,000 by the fbi at the end of this. and yet had two of the hijackers living in his home and apparently never told anybody. then there was a lot of negotiation which at one point had him saying i will testify if you the joint inquiry will give me immunity from any future prosecution. >> i think the only thing you can conclude is that he felt that he had very damaging information. >> that he wanted immunity from something and that something had to do with his relationship with these two hijackers. >> did you ever speak to the fbi director robert muriel about that block. >> absolutely. he is the one who said the reason we are not giving you access is because our asset program is very valuable and we cannot have any outside infruition into it. >> did you feel that was an honest answer? [inaudible] bring them to the house. i see them as very nice. >> i asked him if he was a religious man and he said he didn't pray any. didn't go to any mosques. he also says he was not a religious man and did not pray. >> are you religious. >> no. >> why would you go to a mosque? >> how did you come to meet him? >> so, everybody have to do something for them really. >> he didn't go down there and meet these people by accident. they had to have a network. >> believe tasked the to help the hijackers. shared that suspicion. it did not include shaza. there is this connection between al awlaki and the hamburg 9/11 cell. >> there was a search of bin al shibh apartment. they found the fax number for the virginia mosque where anwar al-awlaki was working. >> it was another thread that ties al awlaki to the 9/11 plot. >> the hijackers move quite a bit. they kept moving frequently. >> this is the apartment that he found for the hijackers in alexandria, virginia. and shahza called and asked for their help. the saudis are back and they'ring loo for you and would like to you take them sightseeing. >> two new roommates, first muscle hijackers. it was a road trip from hell. the five men drove up i-59 and ended up staying two nights in fairfield, connecticut at this model in room 73. 75 phone callsy made to locate flight schools, car agencies and apartments. >> they argued over money and they wanted to move on. i guess it just didn't pan out for them up in connecticut. he pug sugged i will take you to pakistan. >> the next day we know that the hijackers moved to patterson. >> they wound up settles here on union avenue. >> third floor up here. >> investigators place him in less that two months before 9/11. >> coming up to the south patterson library. this is where he used computers. >> we had a very good independent witness that puts him with iea at the library. i think we got 90% of this story. >> coming up, we dig deeper and ask what happened to these people who helped the hijackers?
