Hes refused to do anything other than provide political cover to the president. He now seeks to take a wrecking ball to the constitution of the United States of america. Attorney general barr refused to comply with the subpoena for the underlying records. No person, not the attorney general or the president can be permitted to be above the law, that is what is at stake today. Republicans shot back that he was bound by the law and cannot provide to grand jury material without a court order. We are manufacturing a crisis, the attorney general is following the regulation. Our democrat colleagues have weaponized our critical over oversight responsibilities. A Senior Justice Department official said nadler turned his back on the 11th hour talks, unfortunately rather than allowing negotiations to continue, you scheduled an unnecessary contempt vote to advise you that the president has asserted executive privilege over the entirety of the subpoena material. Democrats said the white house was running roughshod over legitimate oversight. It is unprecedented for a president to say he will provide no cooperation with authorized subpoenas from congress. Republicans said the democrats real goal is damaging the attorney general and the role of democrat funded opposition research, the socalled dossier to secure eight surveillance warrant for a Trump Campaign aid. Thats an interesting number in its about what i would imagine people would say, people always want more information. We had an election when this was an issue and he refused and was the first president in some time to refuse to release his tax returns, he didnt do it, stubbornly refused, the polls show it wasnt a popular stance and he got elected to. Here we are again and i suppose people who held it against him before will hold it against him again but im not sure theres any more gold in those hills for people who are seeking to turn sentiment against him. Shannon today we watched on the hill this intense vote with respect to the attorney general. We we had breaking news coming o the show that he was going to advise the president you may want to exert executive privilege over these documents. The president has done it in the vote proceeds on contempt, where do we go from here . I think we go nowhere. I dont know that the full house will vote to do this which it now would have to do but i wouldnt rule it out. If it does, what happens then . The answer seems to be absolutely nothing. Eric holder was held in contempt during the Previous Administration and that was the end of it. You can refer the matter to the department of justice with the attorney general can decide to arrest himself i suppose, one doesnt anticipate that would happen. I dont think the sergeant of arms of the house of representatives is going to march down to the Justice Department and haul the attorney general out to punish him for contempt of congress so its a toothless sanction. You would rather not have it in your wikipedia entry but beyond that theres not much to it. Shannon democrats are pointing to everything the white house is telling people to doing, the fighting of subpoenas, philip klein is writing this in the washington examiner. Shannon Colorado School shooting suspects make their First Court Appearance today, we are learning more about the juvenile suspect as well as the victim classmates say saved their lives. Police say the suspect entered through the middle school which does not have a metal detector and when they stormed the British Literature class armed with two handguns, fellow students say 18yearold brendan byerly and 18yearold kendrick castille lunged at the suspect. Castillo was shot and killed because of it but other students say it saved their lives. It was not even a decision, it was just go. It was absolute fear but kendrick went up and i went up and went to it. The older suspect is identified as 18yearold devon erickson, well known on social media for being proobama, antitrump, and for lashing out at christians because he claims they hate. The second suspect is identified in legal documents as mckinney, identifies as male and calls himself alex. The boy had been bullied for being transgender but the motive here for the attack went way beyond bullying and involved revenge, anger, and the possible use of illegal drugs. Im not sure were going to appreciate the difference between surveillance and spying. If you ask folks in the Department Just justice they will say we dont do spying, we do surveillance. I think one of the difference is spying suggest some sort of improper purpose, either that you are spying trying to steal some of secrets illegitimately, surveillance is approved by a court. Its legitimate and authorized and approved. Its exactly what those Inspector Generals investigations are going to get at. We know what happened more or less but what we dont know was what prompted them to do it. We dont know what happened, we know a little bit what happened with carter page and george papadopoulos, we dont know what happened with Paul Manafort or mike flynn or anyone else. Theres a lot we dont know including exactly how everything started and how it all came together and of course we already know enough about the dossier and how it was used to justify the fisa warrant to know there are deep concerns. The Mueller Report came out of there was not a single indictment of a single american colluding with russia. The dossier itself was mentioned of the report, it was very weird. Shannon the fbi was citing the steele dossier as credible as late as june 2017 and Rod Rosenstein approved pfizer surveillance on that basis. These arent normal conversations you hear on the debate stage, how do you feel like you fit in with something who could be very roughandtumble, politics especially at this level can get a little ugly. I think thats the problem in america today, millions of us are so exhausted by that. The main spiritedness and politics has been damaging, its our National Character we are talking about here. I think what i want and a lot of people want is a healthier kind of debate, we dont owe it to each other to agree. Thats what a free society is. We can disagree with honor, with honesty, so far i think thats the way the democratic primary is showing up and i hope it will continue that way and i want to be that way. Shannon you talked about shifting American Values from money to morals, what does that mean politically for you . When i was a little girl, i remember the u. S. Corporations expected to have a sense of moral and ethical responsibility, not just fiduciary responsibility to the stockholders but a greater array of stakeholders. The idea that somebody has worked for a corporation, the idea that somebody would retire with dignity. There was moral and ethical responsibility that was expected. Starting about 40 years ago, the whole idea of trickledown economics, we bought into this economic theory that if all the corporation owes is that one fiduciary responsibility for that one group, that would trickledown and help all boats rise. It hasnt, it has created a situation where 1 of all americans own more wealth how we treat our earth, how we treat our children, thats when economics would could be better for everybody. Thats where money comes from, one people can actualize their dreams. Shannon how do you run against this president should you become the nominee where hes able to cite the lowest unemployment numbers nearly 50 years, the best unemployment numbers for minority groups, certainly africanamericans and hispanics, the highest hourly wages that weve ever had in this country, a lot of Economic Growth in this country the people said he could never achieve, how could you run against that part of the equation . I dont want to take from the president any place where he has had success but there are a lot of dark shadows behind those statistics. The truth of the matter is many of Americans Still have to have a two or three jobs to make ends meet. If we really want to help all of those americans we talk about you give them free health care, you take away the economic anxiety of not knowing how they are going to send their kids to college. Shannon let me stop you on the Health Care Issue because thats a big one for this field and certainly something well talk about in the debates as well. Youre talking about medicare for all. The baseline estimated cost for that is 36 trillion, where does that come from . Money is not a zerosum game, usually republicans are the first to admit. You look at how much money anybody spends the average american spends on health care, you take that money away. They no longer have to do that you look at how much money people have to spend and thrive can be look at how much money people have to actualize. Any dollar you put into health care, any dell you put into education, any dollar you put into actually helping people be able to spread their wings is money you are actually putting into your economy, thats a thing about numbers. A lot of this comes to where we philosophically say it because you can use the numbers to support the left, you can use it to support the right. President eisenhower said the American Mind is both liberal and conservative, i think thats true. Its kind of a yin and yang a complementary relationship complementary relationship.
