I dont think you can blame the democrats. The fact is, they see voter gold in them thar religion hills and they want a slice of the action. I dont blame them for it. Im not sure theyre going to be real successful in getting a large part of that vote for two reasons. First of all, theyre in danger of causing voter whiplash by the sudden new god talk. Wasnt that many years ago they were trying to remove god from the party platform. The second thing is, im not sure theyre going to recognize, voters are going to recognize this god some of the democrats were talking about. He seems to be a god of the progressive imagination who loves abortion and hates israel as opposed to the god of christianity and judaism, who loves israel and hates abortion. Im not sure how theyre going to gain in this. Interesting, he said this to npr, he said Democratic Candidates oftentimes talk about jefferson and madison and founding ideals. But we need candidates who can talk about matthew, mark, luke, and john, theyre not going to win a majority of the evangelical vote. But you cant win 10 to 15 , and expect to win this election. He said more democrats no ed to be getting out there talking about the gospel and all kinds of things. Happy with anybody and everybody. God is not a republican or a democrat. But like Abraham Lincoln said, the important thing in life is not is god on our side, is god on our side. And i want to be aligned with most closely aligned with scripture and i dont care if its a democrat or republican articulating those views. You talked this week. Theres a lot of talk about evangelicals supporting him. You and i had this conversation many times and you feel like religious right coopted this idea of christianity or that christ would be a republican. And now say listen, the left and the progressives need to say hes nonpartisan, he could be with us on these issues and we cant just concede all of this to the religious rights. I agree. Hes not a republican or democrat. But his word never changes. So we have to align with what scripture says. But, look, the president gave him the rose garden, the most faithafirming speech i ever heard, he talked about the power of prayer, the power of christ to save lives, the importance of religious liberty and the ability to save lives. I said, mr. President , what makes you different from your predecessors like reagan and even bush is this those were good godly men that made promises most of which they werent able to fulfill. But you have fulfilled every one of the promises you made to the faith community. And shannon, i really believe that in 2020, President Trump is going to win by even a larger margin of evangelical voters than he did in 2016, because hes running on promises kept.
