Shannon, the white house continue to monitor these reports that saudi arabia may be preparing to admit that they accidentally killed khashoggi, that it was a an authorized unauthorized interrogation gone wrong. President trump was briefed about it on air force one and he gave us his first reaction to those reports a few hours ago while touring ohare the hurrie damage. Nobody knows if its an official report. So far its just the rumor of a report coming out. Earlier today President Trump that he spoke on the phone for about 20 minutes with Saudi King Salman and his denial of any involvement in khashoggis death could not have been stronger. The president might even floated an alternative explanation, one that is receiving quite a bit of criticism tonight for what may have happened to the saudi journalist. President trump it sounded to me like maybe it couldve been rogue killers. Who knows . We are going to try getting the bottom of it very soon. If saudi arabia does turn out to be responsible for khashoggi staff, President Trump promised a very severe punishment on 60 minutes last night. That prompted a Quick Response from some saudi officials warned oil could hit 200 a barrel if the u. S. Takes action. Even if President Trump does not act, Congress Almost certainly would. President trump is dispatching his top diplomat to investigate. Secretary of state mike pompeo is on his way to saudi arabia and possibly turkey to find out firsthand what happened. Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, he may also be heading that way for preplanned Investment Conference in riyadh. Several American Companies and ceos have already pulled out of the mounting calls for Steven Mnuchin to do the same. President trump says they are waiting to make a final decision until they know more and that should be taking place sometime later this week. Shannon Kristin Fisher, thank you. What does it say to you, these allegations that there is going to be a story or they are considering a story line in which this was an actor who did not have direct orders to carry out a killing of khashoggi but maybe had some direction to detain him, interrogate him, get him back to saudi arabia. We are waiting for the report to be issued from the saudis. The turks apparently have conducted some forensics in the conflict. There are still so many unanswered questions. We know 15 saudis traveled to turkey and they apparently enter the consulate, traveled in a gulfstream plane. The turks have published the names and photos of these in visuals. We dont know who gave the orders for the saudis to travel. We dont know what those orders were. We dont know if any one of those 15 or all of them exceeded the orders, and maybe most importantly, we dont know what Prince Mohammed vince hamman knew about it. Before we start speculating about edges we might take in the policy realm, its a good idea for us to collect the facts. Thats why i think we should all be pleased that secretary pompeo was going to be on the ground in riyadh and in turkey after that. Shannon this follows a conversation the president had with the king himself and his with the president said about that today. President trump i just spoke with the king of saudi arabia, who denies any knowledge of what took place with regard to, as he said, his saudi arabia and citizen. He firmly denied it. I think first of all, its worth highlighting that Jamaal Khashoggi is a lawful permanent resident of the United States, green card holder. Hes not a u. S. Citizen but he is to certain benefits of being a green green card holder in the United States and draws greater interest from congress and thats important to note. He has three children who are u. S. Citizens, fourth who is not. With the president will rely on his Intelligence Community reporting as well as the efforts of the diplomatic corps led by secretary pompeo. We will hear from the saudis with their report is and we will do our own independent validation with the saudis are telling us. I think the onus is on this administration to own it and tell the American People exactly what happened and then what we plan on doing about it. Shannon here is the g. O. P. Theres no question the russians and iranians are watching all this with great interest and probably great pleasure as well. There are certain things i think need to be immune from the vagaries of our diplomatic bilateral relationship with the saudis. Intelligence collaboration. John brennan published an oped in which he suggested that we should halt routine intelligence collaboration. That would put our citizens in homeland at risk. And i dont think that under any circumstances is a good idea. There will be other things we can do. Theres a range of options but again its dependent upon what that report tells us and what we determine to a bend the facts on the ground. Theres no question question that this is an extraordinarily serious issue and one that demands attention and action. We have to do the right thing. Shannon what your level of confidence in the joint investigation with the turks and saudis question work we know that their team went into the consulate there today. A reporter was there onsite and smart. What do you think will it be fruitful . I think it will be beneficial. I think theyve been at odds, greatly at odds, the turks in the saudi dont get along as well as we might like. There have been plenty of issues with the turks supporting Muslim Brotherhood and qatar. Not being on good terms with the saudis. They both have an interest and they both know the United States is able to collect information independently and i think that, understanding that they will come forward with a good report. I was in another room. Firefighters came over to be helpful. Theres a lot of work that lies ahead. People need to power back. Its about rebuilding the entire grid. A lot that needs to be done. Shannon encouraging to see crews from around the country and the southeast get in there as quickly as they can. Looks from the images weve seen there are areas where it will take weeks, months, maybe years for them to get back on their feet. Talking about power, usually in the storms, lines are down and he put them back up and you start to get power rolling in. In this particular case commits a total rebuild of the system. There is stuff everywhere. Many of these structures, you can even turn the power on because it could start a fire and hurt somebody. Youve got a clear it all out first. Its a multiple week event, multiple months and it will get better every day. There crews here from all over the country that are helping. Over 200 people working almost roundtheclock to get power restored and then longterm, you worry about for example the agriculture industry. Forestry industry, peanuts, cotton crop that was wiped out. What i have said and i will say again, if, in fact, the saudis lured him in there and then killed him and then disposed of him and have been basically sitting on it, its going to have an impact on the u. S. Saudi relationship. I can tell you from a congressional perspective, it most certainly is and its unfortunate because they are an important part of our middle eastern strategy to constrain iran. That cannot allow us to overlook something as horrific as this if, in fact, thats what happened. I do believe eventually we are going to know one way or the other.
