He also blames china for relaxing pressure on kim jongun. The president says, quote, because of our much tougher trading stance with china, i do not thinking theyre helping as they once were. Pompeo looks forward to going to north korea in the future, most likely after our trading relationship with china is resolved. In the meantime i would like to send my warmest regards and respect. I look forward to seeing him soon. The Treasury Department announced tuesday it had sanctioned Russian Shipping Companies for delivering oil. U. S. Officials say they were planning this visit into this afternoon and a senior u. S. Official says the president then consulted with the secretary before cancelling at the white house. There are also concerns north korea continues building its nuclear program. The continuation and further development of north Koreas Nuclear program are a cause for grave concern. Secretary pompeo last traveled to north korea in early july. He never met with kim jongun during that trip. After leaving, he called pompeos visit deeply regrettable, as he made gangsterlike demands. Then the u. S. Would lift sanctions and help it develop its economy. North korea wants concession as it dismantles its program. The Intelligence Services have been unfortunately leaking information to all of us that north korea is advancing their nuclear and Missile Program and surely not denuclearizing. They have considerably more Information Available to them than that. They walked up to this final meeting and had some pretty positive indications that the meeting was not going to lead anywhere. The last meeting was catastrophic. Pompeo put on the table, youve got to tell me where all your Nuclear Sites and Ballistic Missile sites are. And heres the timetable that we suggest for denuclearization. They balked about that. And that became the comment in the introduction, this is a gangster style of diplomacy. So we said, were going to give them a little more time. In the asian culture, trust is important. It takes time to establish trust. Pompeo came back and said, were dealing with a strategy of patient diplomacy, actually quite similar to strategic diplomacy. But i think theyve run out of their patience because they see no positive signs. Where are we now . The president is staying positive. All of the president S National Security team, pompeo, bolton, the cia, the rest of them, they know whats going on. Theyve got the intelligence. Were going to have to start clamping down on sanctions to be sure, to make sure they understand the military options on the table. Heres the problem with the sanctions. Well, we have these issues with china. We have had reports from the un and others who have said they may be helping and may not truly be cracking down on these sanctions. China might be using north korea as the ultimate bargaining chip, saying, if you are not willing to play ball with us on trade, because weve been having these trade talks this week, were not willing to play ball with you on north korea. When were talking about another round of tariffs, its complicating this. He knows its an issue. The russians have always been transferring fuel at ships off the coast and passing other commodities. But heres the problem you really have. Remember the un resolution, theres three of them. And the secretary of state was able to get all the countries to support sanctions and really slam them hard in terms of enforcement. When it comes to sanctions, its one thing for a country to say, were going to do it, and another thing to enforce it. They had the aura of crisis. Remember, Nuclear Tests were going on. On a regular basis. There was eminent danger that everybody felt. This guy hasnt done anything for nine months, kim jongun. As a result of that, the sense of crisis is not there. And hes playing his cards pretty well. Its going to be harder for us to go back. Were going to push on china. Were not going to have any problem with the russians because theyve always had the door open. Its even going to be harder for us to summon the nations where its financially enviable for them to be doing business with them. I think theyre quietly, not publicly, going to get really tough here on whats happening. And if that doesnt work, then the president publicly will also get pretty tough. Weve had some critics step up, of course saying all along this really wasnt going to work and so its good for the president to kind of take back what he referred to could be an embarrassing setback for the american. I want to start from a question that seems to come from the manafort trial where the primary witness against him was rick gates who entered a deal and testified against him. How is it fair gates walks free and manafort goes to jail . Yeah, gates isnt going free. Hes pleaded guilty. Hes going to face a pretty significant exposure when he goes before the judge to get his sentence. Hell get less jail time than he would but hes certainly going to be a felon. This is the question ive gotten a lot over the last few days. This one comes from lets say an offense is chargeable at both fed and state level. Does it means the state cant prosecute . You cant really use that testimony compelled by another jurisdiction. But transactional immunity is often used and thats not recognized at the federal level. The feds can prosecute that witness for the activities associated with that underlying issue but not use their testimony. Its important for viewers to understand that a lot of these rules arent as black and white as one with immunity would want them to be. If they have evidence, you can always be prosecuted. People want to know about how long this can last. If theres a statute of limitations on the immunity deal, can they come back a year later and question and indict you . Its basically a contract between the prosecutor, the government, and this cooperator. If they require you to testify, once youve done something for them, their obligation to return the favor and to uphold their end of the bargain doesnt end. There would be minutia in the way this whole thing is done. Its not going to be you can get away with any crime from now on. Its always in the past. Never understood these deals. Have can witness have any credibility . How is that explained to the jurors . Oftentimes, so in a trial for example, prosecutors will basically say, look, if you have information on a bigger fish, were hoping that you will actually convict here, of course hes not going to be associated with choir boys. You have to believe that this witness here, while hes despicable potentially with his conduct, that hes credible. Youre absolutely right that thats often called into question. And thats also why corroborating evidence is important on the part of the prosecutor so the jury can feel comfortable with both forms of evidence. They come to their decision and it was interesting because the prosecution had main rick gates and the manafort trial such the star key lynchpin of the whole thing. The jurors really didnt believe him or they questioned his credibility. They looked at how much he had stolen from his employer. They had other issues with him. But the prosecutors put together such a good paper trail for her that they looked aside from gates, knowing he had a deal. I had a number of questions about Hillary Clinton and a number of people close to her were given immunity deals before they made their decision not to prosecute her. This is really a family project then for you guys. And to know the end result, how does that keep you going through the process . That is how it keeps you going. People say, you do such wonderful work. How do you give them up . We get as much out of it as we put into it because its such a blessing to meet the people they go to. All of our dogs, the people stay in touch. We get to see them. Its just really rewarding. Then what about you . You work, youre busy. How do you fit this into your life . Sure, its hard, but weve got a routine now. And so that all works really well and we just came back from vacation, which is why i think hes a little restless. Hes been in the car. He goes everywhere with you. You get to socialize them. It works. So thats one advantage is that at a certain age they can travel with you. Thinking about the folks they will go to, you have them 18 months and then they go to formal training. How does that work . Well, it is up to graduate how much interaction they want. Weve been very fortunate that all of our graduates have stayed in touch either through social media or directly. And we just got to meet with one of our puppies yesterday. A lady drove up and met us. They never forget us. Hopefully, he will make the cut, but not all the dogs do and thats okay. Its hard for the puppy raiser and the puppy, but you hope that they graduate.
