Finalists. And later, congressman jim jordan has been rocked this week by old allegations that he did nothing about Sexual Misconduct charges involve a colleague. The republican is telling his side of the story in his first extensive interview with Foxs Bret Baier he says the claims he ignored sex abuse at Ohio State University are bogus. Well have analysis coming up. Welcome toen for at night. Im ed henry. The Trump Administration has launched a fullscale defense of immigration and Customs Enforcement enforcement in the face of democratic calls to abolish the agency altogether. Vice president mike pence even jumped into the fray today. Kristen . Vice president mike pence is usually measured, doesnt speak with the same kind of fire that his boss does, which is precisely why his speech today stood out. Not only did he offer a passionate defense of i. C. E. , but accused democrats of making their opposition to the agency a central part of the partys platform. The American People have a right to their opinions, but these spurious attacks on i. C. E. By our political leaders must stop. In an address at i. C. E. Headquarters, Vice President mike pence responded to the growing calls from democrats to abolish i. C. E. I want to make it clear to all of you, and all of those looking on, under President Donald Trump we will never abolish i. C. E. I. C. E. Short for immigration and Customs Enforcement is the Agency Charged with detaining and deporting all migrants who enter the country illegally. Its became the face at the border after the president started separating Migrant Children from their parents. Protesters have been camping out at i. C. E. Headquarters across the country. 2020 democratic hopefuls are now calling for the agency to be abolished. We should protect families that need our help. Thats not what i. C. E. Is doing today. Thats why i believe you should get rid of it, start over, reimagine it, and build something that actually works. We need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing i. C. E. With something that reflects our morality. Today the Vice President said such highprofile opposition to i. C. E. Proves that what was once limited to the far left fringes of the party has moved front and center. Leading members of the democratic party, including candidates for higher office, are actually openly advocating the abolition of i. C. E. , an agency that protects the American People in our communities every single day. It echoes something President Trump said just one day earlier, a new line of attack that republicans can use, heading into the midterms. The new platform of the Democrat Party is to abolish i. C. E. In other words, they want to abolish Immigration Enforcement entirely. Thats what they want to do. No doubt democrats will counter that line of attack with images of families being separated at the border, roughly 2,000 children still need to be reunited with their parents. The u. S. Government has been ordered to do that within three weeks, and children under 5 are supposed to be reunited by next tuesday, just a few days away, though the Trump Administration is asking a judge for more time. A decision on that should come on monday. Ed . Same day as the announcement of the Supreme Court. Big week coming, no doubt. Kristen, appreciate the reporting tonight. A sign of confidence in the economy, in the face of a potential trade war with china, adding a whopping 213,000 jobs in june, higher than analysts were expecting. Meanwhile the Unemployment Rate went up a little, but experts say thats a positive note because it reflects there are more workers entering the workforce after sitting on the sidelines. Lets bring in tonights panel. Good evening to both of you. Good evening. Good evening, ed. I want to start with you, because you were a candidate at the dnc. The dnc put out a statement saying basically this was a disaster, and nancy pelosi said this, the june jobs report shows whats at stake from the brewing storm of Rising Health costs, spiraling trade uncertainty, in an economy being hollowed out to enrich big corporations and the wealthiest 1 . Americans deserve better than the gops raw deal. If theres Rising Health costs, doesnt have something to do with obamacare in the last administration . How in the world can you say the economy is being hollowed out when over 200,000 jobs are being created . Look, ed, im not going to do what many republicans did, as we saw the unemployment numbers coming down in the Obama Administration, and you had these conservatives saying these numbers are fake, these numbers dont represent anything. Look, there are a lot of happy campers out there with this economy. And thats a good thing. I think democrats should recognize whats working. Whats not working, lets look at gas prices. The people hardest hit by the soaring gas prices are the same communities who receive the smallest benefits from the socalled trump tax cut. Then youve got the trade war that is absolutely going to impact the people who can afford it the least. Sure. This is a tax on american working families. So the economy is a big pie. This is one piece of it, the unemployment numbers, but we also need to look at other aspects of the economy that are not working for people who need it most. The job numbers are positive. You gave him some credit. Well come back to that in a minute, because i dont want to lose that point. Vince, listen to jehmu and respond, which is the fact of the matter is gas prices are difficult right now. Theyre going up around the country. Thats bad for the republicans in the midterms. She races a good point about a looming trade war thats hitting trump country. Its hitting you know, the chinese are not doing this by accident. Theyre going after states in the heartland that this president carried. Yes, they are. The success of the trump economy has bought the president a lot of runway to tinker around with trade policy, because right now the economy is so successful, the president is thinking i can take this over the top by going after china, by going after people he feels were getting raw trade deals with, and trying to correct what he sees as dramatic imbalances. Whether you agree or not with that policy, the reality is the people benefiting the most from this economy, its really clear, working class america. Right now you cant even find trucks they need Truck Drivers and trucks across the country because of how much success is happening at the blue collar level. Jehmu, i gave you credit, yes, that gas prices, the trade war, the president has to wake up to that. Those are important pieces of the economy. When you look at this jobs report, specifically hispanics and african americans, theyre doing pretty well in the trump economy right now. Certainly these numbers are one piece of reflection of what the economy how its affecting them. When you look at Rising Healthcare cost prices, certainly these communities are being hit the hardest. When you look at the fact that inflation adjusted wages have actually declined, that we do see the job growth actually, you know, starting to slow down. And whats up with outsourcing in this trump economy, where youve got federal contractors who basically have outsourced more jobs at a record high under the trump economy. There are all of these facets that are absolutely hitting working families hardest. Hang on. I got to push back. Youre saying wage growth is going down. Im looking at my computer here, because the Labor Department says wage growth remains steady at 2. 7 in june in terms of wage growth. You said wages are going down under donald trump. Thats not true. With, i said that inflation adjusted wages have declined. Thats a reality. You cant just look at it through one trumpfocused talking point lens. You have to look at how working families have been hit decade after decade. By the way, wage growth has been outpacing inflation, which means people have more purchasing power. Meanwhile the reason you said job growth is slowing. Thats because more people are rejoining the job market. You mentioned at the beginning of the segment, jehmu, people talked about during the Obama Administration, dont believe the employment numbers. Were not talking about the u6 number, which is how many people have actually left the economy, not even looking for jobs at all. All those people, right now in the trump economy, theyre rejoining the economy. Thats a big deal. One thing to report for sure. Vince, jehmu, appreciate it. Have a wonderful weekend. Meanwhile republican congressman jim jordan breaking his silence. He told my colleague bret baier in his first extensive interview on all of this that the allegations are bogus. Conversations in a locker room are a lot different than people coming up and talking about abuse. No one reported abuse to me. If they had, i would have dealt with it. What bothers me the most is the guys that are saying this, i know they know the truth. I know they do. All right. Our senior capitol hill producer is breaking down the latest developments for us tonight live in washington. Chad, talk about the strategy from jim jordan. He made some smaller comments at a fourth of july parade, and whatnot, but sitting down with bret theres a Clear Strategy here to push back. Right. He feels very upset. He says, look, i worked with the folks the accuser. Right, absolutely. He says, thats the problem. His issue has been to go after the accuser. Theres no one in this entire milieu he holds more contempt for. Mike disabato has arrested five months ago, he has all kinds of problems. Heres the problem, people have come forward that are not named mike disabato. People are saying, wait a minute, jim jordan knew about this. There are people who know jim jordan, who like him, and say he needs to speak up. What about perkins coie who sent out emails to congressman jordan, he says he doesnt receive them. In the last election, weve heard about how perkins coie was involved in putting together the antitrump dossier. He said thats the Hillary Clinton law firm. I think its funny when i take on one of these witnesses, and every liberal in the country can find my email and phone number and call up and express their views, and he says they cant get ahold of me . Ive been privy to the email sent to the incorrect email address. Its short, terse, basic, very transactional, but jim jordan says hes going to talk with them next week. If youre doing an investigation, is there a universe of 10 people . Is there a universe of 100 people . If theres people who they really absolutely unequivocally wanted to talk to, they could have found jim jordan. Hes not hard to find. During the me too movement, prominent people, like harvey weinstein, a grand jury in new york city, thats crystallized the allegations, and people seek justice and hell have his day in court. Whats with jim jordan . This is so old. Is the house ethics committee, will they look at this. They could have them look at this to understand, get clarity. The free caucus, him one of the two head honchos, they have to make a decision when members return, to say, wait a minute, is there a cloud hanging over jim jordan, is there a tracks . I notice members of congress Vice President been returning phone calls. I did talk to some tonight. Theyre circling the wagons. They dont want to be associated with someone who might have an ethics problem like this, ed. Because they simply dont know whats true, whats not true, from a couple decades ago. Absolutely. Its hard to prove, hard to disprove. This could be fatal for jim jordan if he wants to move into leadership. Thanks, chad. The Associated Press published a bombshell report yesterday, at least thats what it suggested. The headline reads, u. S. Army quietly discharging immigrant recruits. As doug mcelway reports, there are details that need a close look. It was design designed in 2009 as a winwin for the u. S. Military, opening the armed forces to foreignborn recruits, expanding the ranks of those with specially medical or Foreign Language skills while giving them a pathway to citizenship. In 2014, the Obama Administration expanding the program to accept dreamers. At the same time the pentagon struggled to vet the increasing backlog of foreign recruits, many with murky, unverifiable backgrounds. Last year, after an assessment revealed some recruits had lied on background checks, the pentagon froze the program. We could not continue what weve been doing without an espionage. So we are taking the steps obviously to save the program if it can be saved. And i believe it can. Thursday the Associated Press citing Immigration Attorneys reported the pentagon as further cracking down on the program, abruptly discharging 44 foreign recruits. The a. P. Story hinted strongly it was driven by the president Trump Administrations antiimmigrant policies, prompting a flurry of angry responses. Its highly suspicious, because these individuals are in the country legally, enlisted in the army a long time ago. It appears the army got tired of spending resources, processing the background checks they were ordered to do, so theyve come up with a specious excuse to kick everyone out. Late today Defense Department officials told fox news that the 40 cases outlined in the story include recruits from china, apartment complex, and iran among others, and that the large majority of cases are not recruits from central or south america, quote, this is the normal process of adsquarefoot kateing security clearances. Military analysts say these types of discharges are hardly unique to foreignborn recruits. Even naturalborn citizens are discharged for failed physicals, loss of security clearances, and bad background checks. Ed . Doug mckelway, thank you, doug. Breaking tonight, the New York Times is reporting that President Trumps lawyers have set new conditions for a possible interview with the special counsel robert mueller. Rudy giuliani telling them that mueller needs to prove that the president committed a crime, and that the interview would be essential to completing the probe before they will even agree to an interview. No comment yet from the special counsels office. Meanwhile another big d oj deadline has come and gone. House republicans still demanding to see documents focusing on what the president has dubbed spygate, the fbis activities leading u up to the russia investigation. Catherine harridge is following the details. The newlyavailable records do not comply with congressional st. Johns, and barring new developments tonight the latest records do not meet the House Resolution deadline. Trey gowdy on overside, devin nunez on intelligence, and bob goodlet on judiciary requested the records. House staffers viewed records at the Justice Department thursday because lawmakers were out for the holiday recess,k canning the Justice Department and fbi are still withholding documents. In april a subpoena was issued for a key set of records, focused on fbi activities before the fbi russia case officially opened on july 31st, 2016. The source of the Justice Department and fbi have not provided all records or information about this critical time period that will likely show why the russia probe started in the first place. What put all of this into motion, and of course was what put all of this into motion, something that was politically motivated or was it in fact based on legitimate Law Enforcement evidence . Based on the hearing, on just the back and forth that weve seen over the last few months, we are in an extremely unusual and in my view disturbing situation where theres been a complete breakdown and fracture of trust. Fbi director Christopher Ray and the Deputy Attorney general were on capitol hill last week. Those who know rosen stein emphasize hes in a difficult position, because they say its not routine to provide records from ongoing cases. I know rod rosenstein. I think hes an honorable person. I think anybody in that position would take it personally if theyre going to say that you personally have been obstructing congress, or Holding Things back. I think that he views himself as a point of the spear in a process and the one that has to interact with congress. A congressional aide for the House Judiciary Committee says the Justice Department has asked for more records and asked for more time, and went further saying the department is simply not in compliance. A Justice Department spokeswoman drain declined to commit, adding they will respond directly to the house committee. Ed . When we return, countdown begins. Were three days away from the president revealing his Supreme Court pick. Did orrin hatch let lapse that it will be a woman . And tariffs kick in. Who has the upper hand . Only at select local paint and hardware stores. Were expecting President Trump to announce his pick for the next Supreme Court justice on monday. Were told the white house has prepared four rollout packages. The finalists are brad cavanaugh, amy barrett, and the dark horse thomas hardiman. Welcome to all of you. Alex, i wanted to start with you, because warren hatch wrote an oped for the deseret news out in utah, and wrote but no matter the nominees background or credentials, progressives will do everything they can to paint her as a closet partisan extremist, and i will devote my energies to be sure we confirm the kind of Supreme Court Justice America needs, a justice who says what the law is, not what she wants it to be. Alex, is that an accidental tip that maybe its going to be amy barrett . It could be an accidental slip. I dont even know that President Trump knows yet who his favorite is. Yesterday we had three names. Today four. Judge hardiman wasnt mentioned yesterday, and now in the top four. I dont think necessarily the white house even knows. So it could have been a slip. Well have to wait and see. Though i know there are a lot of social conservatives would like to see barrett nominated, because they believe they would be a strong vote to overturn roe vs. Wade. Thats why i asked the question, not just a slip, but hes a prominent longtime former chairman of the judiciary committee, dealing with Supreme Court nominations for a while, somebody whos on the inside of all of this. Whether he knows something or not, as you know, amy barrett is somebody who has noted, the prolife community really wants. Youre a big fan of bret cavanaugh, taking fire from conservatives. I think of George Patton standing in front of the american flag, except with cavanaugh i think of the constitution hes been fighting on the bench on a liberal court, fighting for principles like the Second Amendment, illegal immigration, and executive power. I think although all of the candidates on President Trumps list are conservatives, when i see judge cavanaughs record, i think of a real President Trump conservative, especially President Trump, if youre watching, i encourage you, read the opinion by judge cavanaugh about not allowing Illegal Immigrants to vote in union elections. Judge cavanaugh has never gone wobbly. I know the man. He doesnt have a wobbly bone in his body. Interesting. David, you said that you think the president cant go wrong, that basically everybody in the final four is strong. Yes, the four of them are. Personally i like hardiman, comes from the Third Circuit locally here. He was confirmed unanimously through the senate last time, and comes through blue collar roots. He was the first in his family to go to law school, and funded school by driving taxi. Thats what he drove the campaign on, does that matter in a pick like that . Its a great story, great story for the midwest, a great story for the country, taxicab to Supreme Court. Youre all legal eagles, none of us know for sure who its going to be, but i want to start with alex. Whats your best bet . Bret cavanaugh is a name weve heard, as well as kethledge, and then barrett is still in there. What does your tell you . Oh, i dont know. Maybe bret kavanaugh. Justin, whats your bet . I agree with alex. Number one, i believe President Trump is looking for a warrior. Number two, hes looking for someone with a great allamerican family, the kind of guy whos the opposite of whatever a georgetown Cocktail Party d. C. Insider is. I know judge kavanaugh. Hed much rather have a beer and watch a ballgame and celebrate a caps victory than he would to gee to a Cocktail Party. Didnt he serve in the Bush Administration . Hes been a washington insider, to your point. Actually judge kavanaugh was investigating Hillary Clinton and fighting for conservative legal principles long before president bush ever came to d. C. , fighting for conservative legal principles ever since. David, your pick. I talked about hardiman, a couple points on kethledge, big Second Amendment judge. Hes not only an avid hunter, but also has a carry permit, carries a glock. You think he might get it . Yeah. Well know on monday primetime. Tune into fox news. Up next, new technology that could literally put words in peoples mouths, words they never said. It could create a problem for political candidates. We have that story coming up next. Early today the u. S. Increased tariffs on billions of dollars worth of chinese imports. Tonight beijing is hitting back. Fox Business Network Edward Lawrence has the details. Good evening, edward. Good evening, ed. The trade dispute seems to be escalating, china immediately saying theyre going to put 25 tariff on a number of u. S. Exports, including soybeans, suvs, also crude oil. The Chinese Ministry of commerce spokesperson coming out saying President Trump launched the largest trade war in history to date, this kind of taxation is a typical trade bullyism, serial jeopardizing the Global Industrial chain. This is in response to tariffs on chinese goods starting today, and 16 billion more of chinese goods starting in about two weeks. The Trump Administration says that the chinese still have not opened their markets to u. S. Goods. They are still stealing u. S. Intellectual property. They have not removed their tariffs in place. The president promised the American People he would fight for them, fight to make the trade deals fair and reciprocal. Were moving in that direction. You know, i mean, hes going to i think in the next few months, youll see a lot of improved deals. On march 2nd, another advisor to the president , peter navarro, said he didnt believe that other countries would retaliate, because the u. S. Has the largest economy in the world. Again, were seeing pushback related to this. Mexico, the european union, canada, all put on their own retaliatory tariffs. In fact, canada saying theyre willing to sit down again and talk about nafta, but again theres no discussions scheduled for china on nafta. Ed, back to you. New technology making it possible for people to manipulate videos of people saying things they never said. Videos are known as deep fakes. As Trace Gallagher reports, theyre quite realistic. Two lines, but with one single memory. Remember the 1980s computergenerated tv host . Dont make a point of saying that too often. Once more will be too often. How about john wayne, posthumously settling a bar fight in this coors light commercial. Or this hologram of the rapper tupac performing at coachella in 2012, even though he decide 16 years ago . In the past, these video deception have been used for entertainment purposes, but with emerging technology more and more web useers will have the capability to mikvos showing a person saying something they never said. Its called a deep fake. You can see a trajectory develop where within a year or two its going be really hard for a person to distinguish between a real video and fake video. These videos could potentially have very serious consequences. At some point someone will take the next step and weaponize it. It takes forensic capabilities, technical capabilities, to show its not real. By the time its done, its been widely disseminated. How does it work . If you have enough video and audio of an individual, a Computer Program using an algorithm can mimic that persons voice and facial expression. Earlier this year, a director made a deep fake video for buzzfeed, appearing to show former president barack obama disparage President Trump, using two programs called aftereffects and fake app, the minutelong video tooking roughly 56 hours to render. President trump is a total and complete [bleep]. Now, see, i would never say these things, at least not in a public address. But someone else would. Someone like jordan peele. Obviously these kinds of videos have the potential to do a lot of harm. Thats why a research arm of the department of defense is currently working on technology to detect the socalled deep fake. Ed . Thank you, trace. At least i think that was trace. Yeah, it was trace. When we return, its been two weeks, no end in sight in monsoon rains in the forecast. Well tell you the latest plans to try to rescue that soccer team trapped in the cave in thailand as the situation grows more desperate. Pressure is mounting in thailand after a former navy diver died yesterday. We told you about it last night. He was trying to help rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a cave. The rescuers are still racing against the weather right now. Monsoons are on the way. Alex rossi is in thailand with the latest. Theyre grappling with the huge physical demands of this operation. Oxygen tanks are being relayed into position. On the jagged tunnels of the cave complex. These pictures show clearly just how challenging it will be to get the boys out, none of whom can swim through the dark flooded passageways. Cave divers will have training to rescue other cave divers out of a cave, but rescuing kids out of a cave that is new to most of us. How soon do you think it will happen . Today or tomorrow, i think. The dangers are becoming more and more apparent. Former Thai Navy Seal a volunteer died after losing consciousness on his way back from delivering tanks of air. The body of the 38yearold was given a military escort to the airport, celebrated as a national hero. He will be honored with a royal sponsored funeral in the next few days. The food of this rescue operation has become more subdued following the death of one of the volunteers. What hasnt wavered is the professionalism and the dedication of all of the teams involved. There is, though, an increasing sense of urgency. Weve learned that the levels of oxygen in the caves where the boys are trapped is deteriorating. Theres also still the threat of more bad weather, heavy monsoons are looming, forecast for the next 24 hours. For the moment, the Football Team remain trapped. Theyre being given treatment, but two of them, along with the coach, are malnourished and weak. The School Friends said theyre resilient. I met two of the Football Teams members. One didnt attend practice on the day they entered the cave because he was sick. Another had overslept. Hed stayed up watching the world cup. They shed me video of the Training Session they missed that day. Both are praying their mates will be rescued soon. But as the boys prepare for another night in the caves, its still not clear whether a rescue operation is imminent. The teams are poised for their orders, but at the moment its still too dangerous to tim tebow to bring them out. Alex rossi, sky news, northern thailand. The tradition of the president of the United States throwing out the first pitch. Well look at how baseball has actually shaped policy in washington. Well introduce you to chesty. Hes the marines new mascot, a patriotic pop as we wrap up Independence Day week when we return. As washington, d. C. Is planning for the 2018 major league allstar game later this month, its worth noting baseballs relationship with american president s is almost as old as the game itself. Joining me now is former white house speechwriter, author of a new book, the president s and the pastime, mr. Kurt smith. Welcome, sir. Ed, thanks for inviting me. Great to be with you. One of our producers lou is a big baseball fan like me, and collects memorabilia, probably more than we should have, in the basement, the closet, the drawer, everywhere else. He found a program that he collected, the washington senators 1971, all sorts of players, and has richard nixon, the president , obviously quite controversial, right in the center of it. The idea that baseball, you know, and the president s have been at the center of it all, but today the idea of donald trump or Hillary Clinton being on the cover of the nationals or yankees magazine is insane. Its not possible. I saw the poster earlier. The poster is a classic. Nixon was a great fan, there was an endearing walter middy quality to him. He was offered the commissionership of baseball, as well as the director of the Players Union in 1965, but turned them down because he had other plans. The other plans were winning the presidency in 1968. He threw a great allstar game bash in 1969 when the last prior allstar game came to washington, d. C. In fact, hank aaron said that nixon knew more about the game than many of the officials in the game. So thats where we were. Thats where we are today as we come back to washington, a great deal has changed, but not baseball. 1971 wasnt that long ago, but i got to say 2001 was much more recent. You think about george w. Bush at yankee stadium, and president s have used baseball with that first pitch he threw, derek jeter was there, and brought the country together. And baseball has had that ability. It sort of pains me, whether its a democrat or republican, that many cant throw out the first pitch now, because half the stadium is booing them. Well, i think theres a plague on both of their houses. Certainly donald trump, i think, some of his rhetoric has exacerbated that division. Certainly the resistance says it all in and of itself. Sure. They came to the division of the last two years, and they were determined they would not say a nice word about donald trump, and theyve been true to that. I think both sides should cool it. I think both sides should say lets play ball. It would be nice, if donald trump, incidentally, great baseball fan hes been, grew up on mantel, played baseball for the military academy in the 1960s, the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox wanted to sign him. I dont know if you knew that. He could have been a major league ballplayer. Donald trump had a shot to be a major leaguer . Not just a shot, but he said i didnt want to make baseball money, i wanted to make real money. You know, ed, real money he may. Hes a great fan, as you know. He threw out the first ball before becoming president at yankee stadium, fenway park, wrigley field. Sure. I think without being asked that donald trump could do himself a great deal of good, the game a great deal of good, the country, by getting out at the allstar game this year, opening day next year, putting on his jacket, hitting the mound, and throwing that first pitch. I hope he does it. Ill be with him in finland the day before, and race back to take my son to the allstar game in washington. Hope it comes together. Well see if the president does that. Final question, bush xli, weve been thinking about him in recent months, the passing of his wife. He was a great baseball player at yale. He loves baseball. Oh, yeah. That was the president s award, i wrote the citations and text for that. President s award, he cooked it up. Never given before, never given since. I think he could make a case he was the greatest fan ever to be the president of the United States, and very probably the greatest player, because as you know a scintillating fielder, the captain of his Yale Baseball Team that made the first two College World series. God bless him. He still loves the game at 94. He was a lefty first baseman at yale, like myself. Not at yale, but lefty first baseman. Ed, thank you.
