The threemember, lesser number its hard to knock off an incumbent. And then, it usually wins especially when the economy is good. Donald trump has a challenge that we have not seen in modern history so you had a president with a very Strong Economy especially with people saying they felt good about their personal finances three and half years after President Trump was in office but then the pandemic hits and out were in a recession and that has been catastrophic for many families while the richest have done better. Now, can donald trump, now in this week can you talk about the record he has to run on which im sure you will hear a lot about and can he convince people that the question should not be so much, are you better off than you were four years ago because arguably many families would say at this moment no but what he could say is do you thank you will be better off for years from now under my economic policies or joe bidens economic policies . I thank you will see the clear contrast and im interested to see the people they have coming on board and they only had about four weeks to plan this Virtual Convention and the democrats had about four months but i understand there will be some really interesting video content as well including from senators and battleground states that are in tough elections like joni ernst will be giving her speech from iowa. Bret katie, interesting thing is we will hear from the president very much every night and he seems like he is relishing this moment and he is at the beginning of the press Conference Today this was the authorization for the convalescent plasma and this is how he addressed reporters when he came out. One interesting thing i think that came out tonight is the Trump Campaign produced president s second term agenda just as we came to air with very detailed goals of what he would do on the economy, on covid, on Foreign Policy and one of them is creating 10 million new jobs in the next ten years, creating a new way of bringing jobs back from china on a number of issues with manufacturing or producing ppes were not hostage to china on these issues so when we saw a lack of that from joe biden the president on the eve of his convention is putting it all out there insane i want to run on my record and talk about the things ive done for people like you and as there rnc chairwoman Ronna Mcdaniel said were bringing real people to talk about their experience with the president and the slide that he is hate filled and divisive is not going to stand up when he had people who are products of his criminal Justice Reform and the economy speaking on their own behalf about how he has impacted their lives. Martha we will see present from a lot during the course of this and weve all learned and covering him over the years that he likes to be his own spokesperson. He is the one who likes to get in front of the podium and does it all the time. What is your reaction to that that we will see him in a couple of president ial surprises every day . I think it is the trump show and i think he is terrific at television and he relishes the fact that when he appears on television the ratings are great so he sees himself, i thank you just said, as his best salesman and i think that is what he is putting forward. Its also the case hes putting forth his family and very prominent role and he will be introduced on thursday nights by his daughter and his wife will speak from the rose garden and you know, the most controversial speakers so far is secretary of state mike pompeo and people never heard of secretary of state speak at a Convention Like this. Of course there is controversy about the fact that the president will speak and accept the nomination from the white house. Thats never been done. This is all, groundbreaking. When you think about the president this president , i think of him as capable of putting on a great show. I dont think that even his most, you know, ardent critics with a donald trump is not a great showman. The question is what kind of show will be seek . Bret Chris Stirewalt, the told steve hilton last hour that the d c was doom and gloom and that we should expect much more optimism, positivity and a look ahead to the rnc. I mean, look, that doesnt fit with their Campaign Strategy and the republican Campaign Strategy is electorate they had with the electorate that we have they cannot win so they will change the electorate they say and will bring more workingclass white voters into the mix. You dont do that based on what we have seen from them by the sunny optimism or the revolution chairwoman and others and its a positive thing. That will not work for their strategy. Their strategy requires american carnage. Their strategy requires being scary about what democrats will bring and socialists and mob violence in cities and they will dwell on those things because they have to change the electorate. Bret this is a lot different than conventions passed and we are not on the floor and when you are on the floor its a different feeling and you have this organic thing that happens and you just talk to people there so its a little different covering it and the rnc last time and then we had the dnc and there is a shot of us with bill hemmer and you are in this little thing and its much more a part of everything and i remember being at the rnc behind sarah palin and the teleprompter went down. Her big moment in the prompter goes down and that happens, you know, you look at it and go that put her on the spot. Martha and she did not miss a beat. Theres nothing like that energy. I know we are always trying to make it this as energetic as possible and it will be interesting. The logistics and the party work will be held in North Carolina and one of the handful of states for the vote could go either way. Wisconsin, home of the Democratic Convention headquarters last week is another one. Martha battleground states could very well decide the november election and they usually do. Here are facts and figures with our colleague bill hemmer. Bill. Bret and martha, thank you. What a scenario right now focus on three critical states in 2016. America tries trump at 126 and a lot of different scenarios on this board here but everything you see in gray is considered a tossup for now. It will change as we get closer to the election. Think about these three states, wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania. They were razor three and four years ago and a moment i was so that to you but for joe biden the hunt for 270 is easier if he takes wisconsin, flips michigan and flips pennsylvania. Then he would be at 259 and then hunts around this and maybe he holds in minnesota and perhaps takes nevada and i would give him the white house in 2020. Lets go ahead and show the difference here for donald trump. Again, the debate on texas lets say right now it is not as blue as they believe and we give them georgia as well and then he goes on the map to defend florida for 2016 and North Carolina. If he were to do that and then we moved to these three states that are critical again and if he holds wisconsin, holds michigan and holds pennsylvania in that scenario he is now at 270. Then he gets a hundred different scenarios in here and we shall over the next 70 days or so, the reason im looking at these three states is because what happened in wisconsin in 2016. Donald trump won the state by three tenths of a point in 22000 votes, super rightparenthesis how about michigan . When the state by 10000 votes, two tenths of a point. In pennsylvania razor thin with such a large turn out to more than 6 million votes cast in on the state by 44000 votes. Put all three together and the tabs between 77 and 78000 votes in three different states that helped him capture the white house four years ago. In the what a scenario, keep an eye on wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania and we will see which way these voters break in these estates and that may ultimately determine who here gets two to 70. One scenario, back to you guys. Bret there will be many more. Bill lets talk about the battleground states. Karl roves former deputy chief of staff for george w. Bush and carl let me start with you. You heard bill layout one what if scenario and really it is a handful of states we see this every election cycle but its more pronounced it seems this time around. Yeah, i think bill is right. The three key states are michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin and already both campaigns are running Television Ads and it looks like arizona, florida, georgia, iowa, North Carolina and particularly arizona and North Carolina will be strongly contested along with florida and it will be interesting with the Trump Campaign is making noises about competing for minnesota and we will see if they back that up with resources and theyve got a lot of staff in the state, Something Like 80 people on the ground already working so lets see if they back it up with people. Itll be interesting to see if ohio comes into play and it looks redder than it was four years ago and campaigns are about limited resources and supplying them. In ohio and Biting Campaign talks taxes but both of these could be giant chunks of change and already you got a lot of money being spent in the states that have been competing in and of course lets not forget main and nebraska. The northern two thirds of maine and the city of omaha and in its suburbs these are the two states that break up their Electoral College vote by congressional districts and trump carried these districts in 2016 and if we get close the election could literally come down to how does northern maine in eastern nebraska votes in the election. Bret there is one scenario thats 269269 and it comes down to those two places great i played with the map 7 billion times. Martha marie, weve already talked about how this whole mailin voting issue could mean this is not an election that ends on november 3 and then you look at the possibility of 269269 and i mean, we will see. Right . What you think of when you look at those scenarios bill laid o out . First of all, when you hear 269269 we all have heart palpitations here because that would be so unprecedented, martha. If you look at the battleground states democrats feel pretty good about many of them because in 2018 they picked up a number of house seats in places like michigan and other states, pennsylvania and others. I think democrats feel like the trend in many of those states has been going in their direction both at the congressional level and the state electoral level but we also should remember that many of those battlegrounds there are very hotly contested senate races, particularly with some republican incumbents in states like and states like maine, North Carolina and a lot of money is going into those senate races as well. I should mention arizona so there is still so much pressure and so much money being spent on the airways not just on the president ial on the senate races as well and martha, one more point on the mailin ballots we heard from democrats last week really hammering home this idea that its not election day but election and season telling people to vote early and to get their absentee ballots and to make their planet now so i thank you will see a lot of money being spent even earlier because people are encouraging early voting this year. Bret karl, what about the imprisoned campaigning . Doesnt seem like joe biden will bounce around the battleground states and he may but President Trump clearly is and he takes over a local news cycle every time he does and does not make a difference and does that fit into the Trump Campaign strategy . Absolutely it does. Having been through two of these president ial campaigns concluding that reelect you look at where the president or the candidate is going because you are absolutely right, going in and dominating local coverage in the battleground state has a sniffing and impact on the quality of your effort there and on persuading swing voters and maximizing turnouts. For example, donald trump won wisconsin where he went and where Hillary Clinton never did so this is very important and in michigan where donald trump went a lot and Hillary Clinton went a little. The presence of the candidate has a big impact. If i could reinforce one point that marie made about getting out to vote early, take a look at florida. Four years ago roughly 2. 1 million votes were cast by mail early between republicans and democrats were up 58000 person advantage to the republicans. Already there been applications for 3. 4 million early votes by republicans and democrats and democrats have a 600,000 person advantage. Republicans better whittle that down or they will be in trouble. Martha those are absentee ballot applications and thats not states voting the way that new jersey and other places are. Tanks guys but will be back with a bit more after this but stay with us and ahead mailing it in or campaigns are pushing for voters and voters prepared to cast their ballots next week. Plus, democrats wrap up their convention and they did not address the issue of cities under siege by violent protests. We talk about that when we come back. Stay with us. I think there is also a negative connotation that the majority of the protesters out here are all anti trump. Bret the election may not be until november 3 but 1 state is gearing up to send out thousands of absentee ballots for North Carolina begin sending ballots out just about two weeks and a full two months before election day. They will be sent to voters who have requested them. Mark meredith takes a look tonight from charlotte. As a public and delegates arrived in charlotte for Convention Business data officials are making primary mailin voting to begin next week. We are shifting through our final approval process. The board of elections says the state is expected a huge surge in mailin voting to do covid19 in the state plans to mail out absentee ballots for voters who have already requested them on september 4. More than three weeks before the first president ial debate. We are asking voters to as soon as they made their decision go ahead and get that thing in the mail. In june, North Carolina lawmakers change the rules govern mailin ballots lowering the number of witness signatures required on absentee ballots from two people down to one. In Mecklenburg CountyOfficials Say they are doing all they can to make it easier for people to vote. Elections run out for at least a month when you start early voting in this year you could say its a two month deal with absentee by mail. With voting under way so soon both parties are launching large scale outreach campaign. We are still canvassing and getting out to vote but there will be a lot more phone calling going on in the past. We are putting our message out, social ddf and other party we are not going doortodoor per se because we respect the Public Health of everybody. For people choosing not to vote by mail, early in person starts in mid november will be ready for anyone showing up on the traditional election day. Data officials are not are encouraging people to wait not to long to return the absentee ballots but they have the option of dropping them off at the local offices if they dont want to wait on the mail to make sure he gets there in time. Last week the democrats tried to deliver a message of unity and compassion but they did not mention the ongoing protests in the violence and the rising homicide rates across major cities in the united states. That left many people wondering whether or not it was the parties message if they were not united in the front and matt finn joins us with the story on that from seattle tonight matt. I believe there is only one way forward and as united america. One that is strong and dece decent, just and kind. The message of the democratic National Convention was largely about unity and rebuilding while destruction and brutal violence continues on the streets of some of American Cities like in portland where a mob turned on this man and was pulled from his truck and beaten. They are trying to make our city horrible and that is what they did. And while joe biden and his supporters focused on Racial Injustice and Police Brutality they had less to say about the nightly protests and riots. When you talk about the violence it takes away from the message as does the actual violence. We will bring back law and order to your community and we will bring it back and bring it back immediately. One way donald trump is already signaling that he will do that is making americans feel that if joe biden is elected president they wont be safe. While the democrats didnt address violence at the convention it is an issue that biden and Kamala Harris will soon have to talk about. We all should be condemning the violence that is occurring.
