Donald trump. The American People understand we cannot continue to have a pathological liar as president. Bret with tomorrows big prize, 125 delegates now at stake. Martha Bernie Sanders makes his case to america. [cheers and applause] good evening, everybody from the university of michigan Dearborn Fieldhouse in dearborn, michigan. I martha maccallum. Bret and i am bret baier. We are just hours away from voting and what some people are calling super tuesday 2. 0. States will decide on their choices for which democrat should go up against President Trump this fall. 352 delegates at stake. Martha the fallout from last week super tuesday voting has left us with a two man race. Former Vice President joe biden riding the wave of an incredible comeback. Surging into polls here today in michigan against the former front runner for months under Bernie Sanders. The selfdescribed democratic socialist who is feared by many in the Democratic Party establishment. Bret tonight, we get a Second Opportunity to talk with senator sanders about what he believes in what direction he wants to take his party and the nation. Martha ladies and gentlemen, please welcome senator Bernie Sanders. [cheers and applause] youre welcome, good to have y you. Thank you very much for being here, we just want to mention that obviously there is the coronavirus situation going on in President Trump is about to speak from the white house about the task force and you are able to see that streaming right now on fox business and on foxnews. Com so with that in mind, lets start and dive in here with our first question this evening, welcome again. A supporter of yours. Its been a good evening, senator sanders. The coronavirus has quickly become a Public Health threat with a global reach. An infection and death rates are rising here in the United States. What is your assessment of the trump administrations handling of the outbreak of what would do differently . You dont mind if i stand, do you . Bret not at all, your choice. Bernie sadly, we have an administration in washington that has shown the world that does not believe in science. Its attitude towards Climate Change which it thinks is a hoax is telling the whole world how do we trust this administration dealing with an international crisis, Health Care Crisis of the coronavirus . When you appoint Vice President pence, an individual who also does a much believe in science, we are telling the whole world is that we are politicizing this issue rather than dealing with it from a Data Research scientific basis. So first of all, this is what i would do. You need scientists leading the effort, not politicians. This cannot be in any way, shape, or form perceived to be a political issue. Number two, we will talk im sure about medicare for all. But when i talk about health care being a human right and all people having health care, the Coronavirus Crisis makes that abundantly clear as to why it should be. Millions of people in this country today who may feel they have a symptom but they cannot afford to go to a doctor and then we have a president of the United States doesnt matter, go to work. We have a president who says absurd things. So what we need to do is right now make it clear that all americans if you are feeling sick, go to a doctor. Will be paid for, dont hesitate to go to the doctor. I will give you another example. At all of you know or should know, we are the only major country on earth that does not have paid family and medical leave. So what does that mean in practical terms . When half of the people in this country are living paycheck to paycheck, today, feeling sick, may be coughing, maybe have a fever but youve got to get to work, got to go do your job at mcdonalds or burger king or walmart, because if you dont go to work, you dont get a paycheck. What happens if you have the virus and youre going to work . You are spreading it to other people. So right now while we move to make paid family and medical leave National Policy at this moment at least we say to every worker if you are sick, stay home. And we will figure out a way to make sure that you are compensated so your family doesnt suffer. Bret senator sanders, to his point. His question about what you would do differently, standing around the president right now are a lot of scientists. And the head of the cdc, a lot of experts. Bernie of course i would. Bret what would you do differently . Bernie i would not be a president saying to the world by the way, i have a natural ability to understand the problem. Is that true or not . Bret he did say that, yes. Bernie all right. When becky said that all reporters at the cdc. Bernie my first thought is a president , i dont claim that im the worlds greatest scientific expert on Climate Change for coronavirus. You listen to the scientists, you dont say stupid things. You dont suggest to people that you can go to work. Bret lets talk about the economy. Bernie we are not talking about coronavirus anymore . What happened to that . Bret the market has dropped 2,000 points. Bernie i always give this guy a hard time. Forgot about it. Bret we will be fair. In the market dropped 2,000 points today based on the virus. Airlines, cruise lines, Hospitality Industry taking a big hit. One of those Companies Need a bailout and to avoid losing thousands of jobs. As president , how would you handle requests by American Companies looking for a bailout . Bernie one of the differences between joe biden and myself is that joe bailed out the crooks on wall street who nearly destroyed our economy 12 years ago. Im using the word crooks, youre not, right . Bret this is true. This is going to be fun tonight. Bernie i use the word. Okay. And these guys after destroying the economy came to congress and they want to cut Social Security, medicare, and medicaid, but they came to congress and they said bail us out and that point, i understand the economy is in trouble and if you want to bail out a time of massive income and wealth inequality, thats fine. Go to your billionaire friends we will put a special tax on billionaires to bailout the economy. And it wasnt only that it turned out to be trillions of dollars and zero interest loans. So my answer right now is will take a look at the economy, obviously we dont want the economy to tank but when three people in america own more wealth than the bottom half of this country, when 49 of all new income goes to the top 1 but we have more income and wealth inequality than at any time in the last 100 years, if we need to bailout the economy, you know who does it . The people on top of my not working class people who are struggling today. Number two, when we talk about bailing out the economy, this is not going to be more tax breaks and subsidies for large corporations. Lets talk about health care to all americans as a human right, how is that . Lets talk about raising the minimum wage to a living wage of 15 an hour. It is simply helping the people on top with taxpayer money from the middle class, no way. Martha let me ask you to questions part of one. The first is you talk about raising taxes on corporations and on americans to some extent as well. You are in the oval office today given whats going on in the economy right now, concerns that perhaps there might be a recession coming at some people suspect could happen as a result of all of this, would you hold off on raising taxes while that situation is going on . Bernie no. I think raising taxes does two things. Number one, it is one means of dealing with income inequality. Mike bloomberg as you know running for president the last three years under the trump administration, his personal wealth increased by 15 billion. And i think that is absurd. So one thing you do with progressive taxation is you say to the wealthiest people in this country because wealth is exploding while we have half a Million People sleeping out on the streets including 30,000 veterans where we have kids who cannot afford to go to college, we are going to ask the wealthiest people in the country to pay that. Martha you are answering that question i think the same way that you would have answered it a month ago before the virus happened but im asking you in the middle of right now when we are potentially in an economic crisis, youve got all these companies that are halting conferences and cruise ships in all of these things, would you say i still believe that in this moment we need to raise taxes . Bernie i will not become president until january and the Economic Situation will be different then. I was there today, i would raise taxes on billionaires for dealing with the issue of income and wealth inequality and raising the funds we need for education and Environmental Protection and homelessness but in terms of an economic stimulus which i think is what you were talking about, we have an infrastructure today which is crumbling right before our eyes. We have millions of people spending half of their income on housing in this country. So what i would do is invest in working class people and good paying jobs by rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure. I dont have to tell the people of michigan who have lived through flint, michigan, about a horrible water system. Martha one more question, bill gates is coming up with a home test kit that he is going to give out all over that area, other billionaires who are at pharmaceutical companies are putting the pedal to the metal to try to find treatment and vaccines. So there are good things that billionaires do when the time of crisis, right . Bernie i understand that and im not here to demonize anybody, i have nothing personal against bill gates, his foundation has done good things but dont you think its a bit absurd that in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, we have to depend upon the generosity of billionaires to help us . [cheers and applause] bret going to move onto the next audience question but if you had to, would you close down the borders . Bernie no. What you dont want to do right now we have a president who has propagated a xenophobic and antiimmigrant sentiment from before he was elected. What we need to do is have the scientists take a hard look at what we need to do. Lets not go back to the same old thing. Isnt it interesting that a president who has been demagogy and demonizing immigrants, the first thing you can think about is closing down the border . We need scientist to tell us the appropriate approach. Bret lets turn to when audience question, allison. Go ahead. To some people, you are seen as too liberal, it seems like you have the right idea but the most moderate democrats, it seems like joe biden can get more accomplished in office, so how do you ensure that you can accomplish all of your goals in office and leave the country in a better place after four years . Bernie i reject the idea i really do come on as one of the things that bothers me and i hear it every day on the media and for my opponents, bernie is an extremist, bernie is too radical. Okay, lets deal with it. Is raising a starvation minimum wage of 7. 25 an hour which is not been raised in ten years to 15 an hour a radical idea . Is making the public colleges and universities tuition free so that all of our people have the opportunity to get a Higher Education in a competitive Global Economy, is that a radical idea . Is doing what every other major country on earth does, guaranteeing health care to all as of right martha i live 50 miles away from the canadian border. Is not a communist society up there in montreal. They guarantee health care to all, they spend 50 of what we spend. His passing a medicare for all singlepayer system a idea . And last point, donald trump, i know youre probably watching, how are you . Wanted to say hello to the president. Bret is actually in a news conference. Bernie im sure hes watching fox, kind of addicted to your station. Trump thinks that Climate Change is a hoax. And thats because he doesnt understand or respect science. I believe that Climate Change is an existential threat to this planet. I listen to the scientists who tell us that we have got to move aggressively to transform our Energy System away from fossil fuel to Energy Efficiency and through a Green New Deal they can create up to 20 million jobs. So my point is, i appreciate raising the question, i just dont think any of those ideas are radical. Martha let me ask you back to the question which was how you would get things done in congress when there are a lot of folks who dont agree with all the ideas that you just mentioned and he was one of them, hillary clinton, she talked about you in a documentary that was released earlier this week, watch this. Bernie just drove me crazy. He was in congress for years, he had one senator support him. Nobody likes them, nobody wants to work with him. He got nothing done. He was a career politician. He did not work until he was 41 and then he got elected to something. I feel so bad that people got sucked into it. Martha that is strong stuff. Bernie i lik unlike secretary clinton, i dont want to relive 2016. But what i would say on a good day, my wife likes me, but also if you guys looked at some of the polling that they do for United States senators. They do poles of how popular you are. In most cases, enter not to be the most popular United States senator in the country. One that President Trump continues to tweet even today that the democratic primary race is rigged against you. He said the same thing in 2016. So do you agree with President Trump . Bernie given the collapse of the stock market today, given the spread of the coronavirus, one might think to tell you the truth that a president of the United States would be worrying about some other things rather than the democratic primary. But maybe im wrong on that. Trump has his agenda and i have the feeling that deep in his heart, he is not all that worried about me. I appreciate his concerns, you will forgive me if i dont necessarily trust him for every belief but i will say this, he has some very smart Political Consultants around in a couple of weeks ago, somebody asked who would you rather run against and the guy said running against a movement makes me nervous. They understand that our campaign is more than just a campaign. We are creating a multiracial, multigenerational Political Movement of young people, working people, people who believe in justice all across this country and in his heart of hearts, i think that is what makes him very nervous. Martha jonathan is an undecided voter. There he is. If you were met with an obstructionist congress, will conquecompromise would you be wg to make to promote your polici policies . Bret if you have a congress that doesnt agree with you, but compromise is what you meant to get it across the finish line . Bernie i should tell you i know theres another mythology going on around me that everyone hates me. But i cant work with anybody. Check the record and you will find that in the 1990s when i was in the house, i passed more roll call amendments on the floor of the house bipartisan than any other member of the house year after year. So in other words, when we see people who have common interest, i dont care what party they ran. For example, there were and have been and are today a number of republicans who were outraged that we are spending ten times more for prescription drugs than people in other countries. Getting ripped off day and night by the collusion and pricefixing in the pharmaceutical industry. I will work with them on that issue. There are republicans who know that our infrastructure are collapsing. I will certainly work with them on that. I work with mike lee of utah. A very conservative republican from utah. We worked together to pass for the first time under the war powers act a Senate Resolution getting the United States out of the horrific war in yemen. A conservative republican Work Together on that. I work with the late john mccain who was a friend of mine. We had different points of view but i respected john immensely. We Work Together when i was chairman of the u. S. Senate committee on veterans affairs, perhaps the most comprehensive veterans bill passed in modern history. So the idea that i cannot work with republicans on issues where we come together is just not accurate. Bret of a lot of the questions that deal with trying to pin you down on specifics about how youre going to pay for your program, several economists have really tried to calculate the cost of the total list. Medicare for all, Green New Deal, free college, housing. Bernie public college, not all of it will be for you. Bret estimates put at us a staggering 55. Is hard to describe that much money. So just give me a second. Just one second, 1 million seconds is 12 days ago. 1 trillion seconds is 31,689 years ago, that is 1 trillion. You were talking 55 trillion. Entirely covered by taxes, it would be nearly double the existing level of taxes. Entirely covered by borrowing, it would store the National Debt to 78 trillion. The National Debt is 23 trillion right now and counting. So how can you pay for all of this . Bernie good, i dont have the teleprompter but i will do my best. Good question. Fair question. Proposing bold ideas, how are you going to pay for it . Lets deal with it. Medicare for all, how are you going to pay for medicare for all . Fair question. How are we paying for it right now . We are paying for it right now by spending twice as much per person as the people of any other country. The average family in america makes approximately 60,000 a year. They are paying 12,000 a year, 20 of their income for health care. Their employer is paying even more. So what i propose is instead of you, average worker paying 12,000 a year, what we are going to do is eliminate all premiums. Lets be fair about this. Sometimes we are not fair on television. Premiums are gone. No one is paying anymore premiums, no one is paying any more copayments on medicare for all. The absurd concept of a deductible is gone. [cheers and applause] we are going to lower going to end the greed of the pharmaceutical industry. All of that, no one is paying that. But i say to you health care is not free, i am not suggesting to you and your the average worker making 60,000 a year. What i say to you, there are various options out there that we put on our web site. Number one, we have proposed a 4 income tax on you exempting the first 29,000. So people making 29,000 or less dont pay anything. 4 of 31,000 so its 1200 a year. Comprehensive health care under my for all plan including dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, and home health care, 1200 bucks a year was a pretty good deal. That doesnt cover it all. That does not cover it all. What we propose is seven a half percent payroll tax on employers. That will save employers money. And then through progressive taxation, we fund the rest. Martha shows all that add up to . Bernie right now, the estimate is from the department of health and Human Services over the next ten years, this country will be sending about 50 trillion, 5 trillion a year. According to recent studies, medicare for all will save money because we are doing away with the profiteering of the Insurance Companies on the drug companies. And heres the main point, right now we have to as a nation administer thousands of private insurance plans which cost a fortune to do. Do away with that so you have one broad plan. You can save for a 500 billion so to answer your question, right now the federal government through medicaid, medicare, and other Public Health programs we are spending about 30 billion a year. We think youll need about 47 billion to find what i want to fund, 17 billion more and it comes through the mechanisms that i talked about. Bret that is just medicare for all. Is a long list. Bernie heres the point. We have documented and its a fair question, ive got it. We have documented how we do this. Let me go to free tuition and public colleges and universities in canceling student debt. How do we pay for that . We pay for it through a modest tax on wall street speculation. Thats how we pay for it. Martha but everyone is going to have to increase their taxes. Last time we talked, you said middle class will see their taxes go up and you talk about cutting defense spending. When you look at defense spending, we spent 6. 4 trillion over 19 years in iraq and afghanistan. You said im not going to spend 1 after that, you wouldnt even come close to making the money back if you cut defense spending to cover the planet youre talking about a 55 trillion. Bernie one second. If you look at what im doing issue by issue, i told you how we would find medicare for all. And this is where we need for media to understand respect in this sense. I am not beating up on these guys. I am not beating up on you. Heres the point. Here are numbers. Right now, youre the average worker. Youre paying 12,000 a year for health care. And if i said to that worker that i can provide bi admit it. So lets say you pay 1200, 2,000n paying 12,000 in premiums, copayments, and outofpocket expenses, who has a better deal . Martha that may be true for the 12,000 euro person, for the 30 or 40,000 euro person who likes the health care they have from their employer, there is 180 million americans who have coverage that they like but youre going to take that away from them. Bernie no. First of all, its 150 million and this is what we are doing. Every year, you know how much people lose per year about 50 Million People here lose their health insurance. Thats true. What we are doing is what every other country on earth does. Why do you think i dont mean to be argumentative, i am just looking at you. Could be any of my democratic opponents, same thing. Why do you think that its a wonderful idea that employers in this country are burdened with the cost of health care . Martha they would probably not want to have that burden. Bernie you are a Small Business person, a decent person, youve got ten people working for you and you want to provide health care. Enormously expensive. Every other country has said youre a Small Business, do your business and dont worry about health care. We will Cover Health Care for you human right. I just want to end on this note. The coronavirus makes this point. We lose conservatively about 30,000 people every year. That is conservative whove died because they dont get to a doctor when they should. Thats a tragedy. But you can see the absurdity of the Current System today when people cannot afford to go to the doctor who may be struggling with the coronavirus. I donti dont know how anybodyn defend a person spending twice as much per person 87 million under insured. Its indefensible system unless we worry about the Healthcare Industry which made 100 billion in profits. Bret we gave you the time and many more questions to come. Including the Green New Deal and socialism. Our town hall with senator sanders continues after this. Everybody get out of here academically challenged racists . Does he look american to you . [cheers and applause] bret welcome back for our town hall with senator Bernie Sanders. We are in dearborn, michigan. A big election tomorrow. We have another question from the audience. This is nina. Nina, with a question . Hi senator sanders, some of joe bidens answers dont make sense. Do you think its acceptable to a president ial candidate to respond to questions like joe biden does . Well, let me just say this. You know, joe biden is a friend of mine. I have known him for many, many years. When we do our events and our rallies. We try to give we respect people in a sense that we give really substantive these guys will think really too long winded answers. There are real crises facing this country. When i give a speech, often its 45 minutes or an hour, okay . Because there are a lot of challenges that the country faces and i have got to talk about them. I think joe was somewhere where was he, michigan or some place else the other day and he spoke for seven minutes. I dont know how you say anything other than minimal discussion in seven minutes so all that i have always believed is that if we believe in democracy, a candidate has got to be honest with the people about what he or she believes given the many, many challenges facing our country. And when you do that, when you are honest and look at the hard issues, and you are going to take on the fossil fuel industry or wall street or the drug companies, it brings forth opposition. I know that i get beaten up every day. Thats fine. Thats what i do. But all i would say is im not going to criticize joe but to say that i think the American People in this incredibly complicated and difficult moment in our history are entitled to thoughtful answers to the crises we face. [cheers] bret senator, this isnt a personal attack but it gets to ninas question. And the question of joe bidens mental aquite. Its not something that just comes up anywhere. Democrats are brought this up including senator kenosha who endorsed joe biden. You just said that two minutes ago. Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago. Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago. I think castro has some really legitimate concerns about can he be someone in a long Grueling Campaign that can get the ball over the line and he has every right to call that out there. Are definitely moments where you listen to joe biden and you just wonder. Are we afraid to say that lot of his sentences dont make sense . He is having trouble completing thoughts . Bret senator, your thoughts . Im not going to go at that level in attacking. Joe and i have you know, thats for people to decide. All i can say is that joe and i have very significant political differences. And im not going to be making, you know, personal attacks on joe. Thats not what i do. But joe and i. [applause] bret and martha, you know, we have joe has been in the senate and i have been in the senate and the house for a long time. Joe voted for the war in iraq. I led the opposition against the war. Joe voted for the wreat wall stt bailout. Talking about the need to cut Social Security benefits programs and other programs. I have led the opposition to those cuts. Joes views on womens issues. Joe supported the Hyde Amendment which would deny low income women to use Medicaid Fund for their own reproductive needs. I strongly disagree with that approach. So, on issue after issue, even in terms of you who we raise funds for our campaign, joe has the support of 60, at least 60 billionaires funding his campaign. Martha let me just ask you one quick question. You said a moment ago that he gives sevenminute answers. Are you suggesting that he lacks substance . No, im just saying im here and we are talking about real issues. Martha right. We can go on three hours talking about them. If im going to give a speech to people and that was at a rally or an event that he held, i cant do it in seven minutes. You know, there are too many issues. There is healthcare, education, Climate Change, immigration reform, criminal justice reform. I dont know how do you that in seven minutes. All that im saying, martha, i think as a candidate for president you owe respect to the people and you have to have the courage or the desire to say hey, this is what where im coming from. This is my view. You disagree with me, fine. But i cant do that in seven minutes in a speech. [applause] martha lets go to margaret who is in the audience. Margaret . Hi more get. Hi, senator. As someone from russia a country greatly impacted by the negative effects of socialism. What assurances can you offer myself and other people impacted by socialism that democratic socialism will not have the same results . Good. Thank you for that question, martha. Martha . Margaret. Margaret. What happened and existed in the soviet union was not socialism. [cheers and applause] authoritarian communism. And communism whether in cuba or whether in the soviet union, whether in other countries was marked by totalitarianism, was marked by throwing millions of people into the gulag, stalinism was about as bad as it got. But, right near, you are from russia. I dont know if you have ever visited finland. Finland is a neighbor to russia. They have a very Democratic Society with strong democratic socialist principles. Everybody in finland has healthcare as a right. Their educational system is, perhaps, the best in the worlds. And college there is free. They take environmental responsibility very, very seriously. They have one of the lowest rates of childhood poverty in the industrialized world. And do you know what . Their voting rate, people who participate in their elections is a lot higher than it is in the United States. So when we talk about democratic socialism margaret, im talking about finland, im talking about denmark. Im talking about sweden. Im talking about countries all over the world who have used their government to try to improve lives for working families, not just the people on top. [cheers and applause] martha senator, let me follow up on that if i may. Basically, since the 1990s, if you look at examples in sweden and denmark, they have been lowering or cutting property taxes lowering corporate taxes allowing vouchers for schools, for Public Schools and private schools, which is one of the reasons why their education has improved. The founder of ikea who famously came back left his own country and moved here has now gone back because he says the tax environment for him is getting better. So they appear to be moving away, more towards market reform and not towards what you are describing you would like to see here. All right. And im not an expert on the current economy in sweden disagree with me if you want, does sweden guarantee healthcare to all people as a right . Martha finding other ways to pay for it because they have to find ways to improve their economy. Every person regardless of income can go to college. Is that not the case in the United States certainly not. Martha 5. 6 Million People, i think in denmark not 300 million. Of course. But my point is what these countries have done and they dont get the credit for it. We have, in america, unbelievably, the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country on earth in terms of the Africanamerican Community like 1 3 of our kids, africanamerican kids are in poverty. Check out the poverty rate for kids in scandinavian. Their Retirement Benefits for their older people are better. Their wages that their workers make are better. So i cannot give you, i should know it and i i dont. Details. In sweden. Long way to eliminate poverty to make sure that all of their people have the basic needs that they need in order to live good lives. By the way, in International Stud dr. After International Study, it turns out that countries like denmark are the happiest countries on earth. And do you know why . Because if you dont have to worry about how you are going to pay for healthcare. If you dont have to worry about how you are going to afford to send your kids to college. If you dont have to worry about the cost of child care. If you are earning a decent wage, even if you are paying more than taxes than you may be paying in the United States, that takes a huge load of stress off of your backs. [applause] bret you mentioned cuba. And authoritarian regimes. There are a few moments in races that seem like turning points. And many experts looked at that moment on 60 minutes when you talked about Fidel Castros Literacy Program as a turning point in this race. Do you regret at all saying what you said at that dime in this ts race . No. I have spent my entire life fighting for working people and fighting for democracy and, bret, if you check my record, i have condemned authoritarianism, whether it is in the soviet union, whether its in cube barks whether it is in saudi arabia that are having too many free elections there. [applause] whether its the united arab emirates, wherever it may be, i happen to be Old Fashioned and i believe in democracy. So if you look at a country like china, for example today. Is china a democracy . Of course its not a democracy. It is an authoritarian country and xi is taking it in a bad direction. But, what can we say about china in the last 50 years . Would anybody in their right mind deny that extreme poverty in china has been reduced . Can anybody deny that . Of course not. Dolls that mean we approve of the Chinese Government . No, it doesnt. I think sometimes and i know its hard given gotcha not you, given the media that we deal with and everything else, you Say Something and people can beat up on you, i think you have got to tell the truth. So if china they have reduced extreme property, does that make me a commune atheist supports china. No, im just telling you a simple fact. Bret i guess it was democrats who weighed in. Of course they did. Bret Stephanie Miller from florida said castro was a murder rememberer. It was cynical effort at the spread his dangerous philosophy and consolidate power. Thats a democrat. So what. A lot of democrats attacking me as well. You know that. Nothing new there. But, you know, if you remember what barack obama said, when obama correctly tried to bring normalized relationship with cuba, what he said i dont want to misquote him but he said something im paraphrasing to the effect that cuba has made progress on healthcare and education. You know. That doesnt mean you support authoritarian government. Thats all. [applause] martha so the New York Times just wrote a very large piece on the how the soviets. I dont have to worry about fox. I have got to worry about the New York Times too. About the kremlin in the 1980s and suggesting that they used you. There is a picture in the piece for propaganda purposes. The documents show the soviets intensive preparation to use mr. Sanders interest in their country to their advantage. What do you say about that . I say that the New York Times got it very, very wrong. What i established in 19 i cant remember. Late 80s as mayor of the city of burlington with sister soviet union. You know who was advocating the very strong way the establishment Sister City Programs all over america . A communist named ronald reagan. [cheers and applause] and by the way, by the way, thats Sister City Program today is still in existence 35 years later. Doctors from russia coming over to the United States. I think the hockey team came over. There have been student exchanges. Let me be very clear, i think that was a great idea. I want to see more. Rather than spending money, billions of dollars on the military i want kids from all over the world to visit the United States. Martha you dont think they were, you know, sort of using your interest in their country in any way to find an n any way . Martha, at that point, i think the times article makes that point on paragraph 203. There were i think dozens of Sister City Programs with the soviet union. Bret senator, we have many more questions from the audience. What about colleges and paying for college . That is a real question from somebody in our audience as our town hall continues with senator Bernie Sanders. [applause] flush. [cheers and applause] hop from one field to the next. Sorry hes a baby martha we are back and we want to get to the next question from the audience, which is from sherri re. Hello. Good evening senator sanders. As a palestinian american i like many would like to know what your plan is to bring a phares lucien to the palestinian israeli conflict. [applause] you know shareef, this has been an issue that we have struggled with for many, many decades. But this is what i will tell you, i tell you this as a jewish american, somebody as a kid lived in israel. The United States cannot continue to maintain a onesided policy towards the middle east. What we need. [applause] israel needs absolutely to be guaranteed the right to live in peace and decency. No question about that. And i will defend that right. But the Palestinian People need, also, to understand that the United States believes they have a right to live in dignity and with justice. [cheers and applause] and what i am very concerned about is that over many years, especially under netanyahu we have seen a right wing drift in israel. I have called netanyahu a racist. I believe that is true. On the other hand, when you look at gaza, you are looking at a terrible, terrible situation where youth unemployment is, i believe, somewhere around 60 or 70 . People run able to leave. Syrias health conditions. That is unsustainable. So what the United States has got to do and im not here to tell you it is easy. But to treat both sides with respect. We are putting a lot of money into israel and to say, you know what . You just cant use that money on weapons. We want you to sit down with the palestinians. I know its hard. Lets work out a twostate solution. Lets end the encroachment of the settlements on palestinian land. Lets see what we can do. Buff we cannot consistently and continue to have just a proisrael policy. [cheers and applause] bret all right, next question on student debt its from richard. Richard, there you go. Hi, senator sanders. As a firstyear College Student here at the university of michigan dearborn, i understand attending university can be expensive. But, at the same time, i understand that i am making an investment in my future. What would you say to families who have worked hard to save up money so that their kiran can go college with minimal debt or to graduate that have worked hard after graduating off paying off student loans. Would you consider in these people in your plans to cancel all Student Loan Debt from public universities. I certainly would consider those people and all middle class and working families in my plans as we bring change to america. But, in terms of college, let me rephrase your question and tell me where you disagree with me. 100 plus years ago in a fairly radical action, working class people said, you know what . We want our kids not to be working on factories or on farms or in fields. We want them to have an education. What they said which 100 plus years ago a pretty radical idea. You know what . Everybody should have a right to go to Public Schools roughly from first grade through 12th grade. And that was transformative in america. I went to a Public School, most of my kids in my Public School we didnt have any money. We had a pretty damn good education. Okay . The world has changed from where it was 30 years ago or 50 years ago. Technology, the Global Economy has changed it. I dont think its a radical idea to say that when we talk about Public Education it shouldnt just be from first grade to 12th grade. It should be through college or trade school as well. Thats why i believe. [applause] thats why i believe we should make public colleges and universities tuitionfree and thats why i also believe that through a modest tax on wall street speculation we should cancel all student debt in this country. [applause] i think the question that those families that you mentioned should be asking is, how could it be right that trump and his friends gave two years ago a trillion dollars to the 1 and large corporations. How could that be right . How could it be right that the fossil fuel industry which is today with their product, if you like, destroying our product gets februaries of billions of dollars a year in subsidies and tax breaks . How ocould it be right that the taxpayers of this country bailed out the crooks on wall street . So i have no apology for saying and by the way it is happening in america state after state, community after community, understands the truth of what im saying. They are making public colleges and universities tuitionfree and that is exactly what has got to happen. [cheers and applause] bret all right, senator, we have a short time here to do a little lightning round. Short questions short answers. I hate lightning rounds. Bret a quick one. Martha there is some speculation who joe biden would pick if he were to get the nomination and some of the people said to be on that list maybe kenosha, kamala harris, amy klobuchar, who would be on your list . Are you looking for a job . [laughter] very bipartisan i offer you the job. Martha you dont know my politics though. Its little bit premature. I havent won the nomination yet. But, i think my gut feeling is that it must be a woman. I would look to women first but women, by the way who hold my political views. Bret so one of those was elizabeth warren. You said it would be nice to have elizabeth warrens support. Have you asked for it . I have asked for it . Elizabetelizabeth and i talk. We have talked for 20 years. We talk on a regular basis. How is that for a political answer. Martha did you ask for her support . We talk on a regular basis. Whats your next question . Bret you are hoping its really lightning. Martha maybe the same answer to this question. Who is your closest friend in washington . My wife. [laughter] martha thats a good answer. I like that answer. [applause] i have, you know, developed over the years a lot of good friends in the house, good friends in the senate. And by the way not all of them are democrats. And one of the things that, you know, i have seen is there are a lot of decent people who are republicans we disagree. That does not mean to say that theyre good not good people, not honest people. Bret if you dont get the nomination, will you feel any responsibility for taking a job away from larry david . [laughter] you know, i saw david. He was moaning and groaning. Im going to give you a good job for the next four years. I are going to make a fortune. What are you complaining about . Bret senator sanders. We appreciate your time. Thank you very much. I enjoyed it. Thanks very much. Martha great to have you here. [cheers and applause] bret fox news town hall. A big day tomorrow with michigan voting. I will be back tomorrow 6 p. M. So, he answered questions on everything really from coronavirus to medicare for all, how he planned to pay for it. Meanwhile in washington, President Trump was busy briefing the American People on the status of the coronavirus outbreak and his administrations response. Its not our countrys fault. This was something that we were thrown into and were going to handle it and we have been handling it very well. The big decision was early when we shut down our borders. Were the first ones ever to do it. We have never done
