And he was the Campaign Manager for howard dean, who notoriously blew up in iowa. Bret the dean scream. He says why, why, why could they not have had this reporting problem in 2004. And then he says asking for a friend. When i think i would point out, molly, maybe you can weigh in on this. One camp was really enjoying this whole thing tonight is the Trump Campaign. They just put a statement out saying brad parscale, who was with us a little while ago, the democrats are stewing in a caucus mess of their own creation with this lobbyist train wreck in history. It would be natural for people to doubt the fairness of the process and these are the people who want to run the health care system, which is a point that has been made tonight by others and he goes on to say that President Trump posted a record performance in a wellrun g. O. P. Caucus process here. People forget there was a Republican Caucus tonight and donald trump secured nearly all of the votes. But whats interesting is is how Many Republican voters came to vote. You dont need to come out in support when its an incumbent. In the last time they were in analogous situation they didnt have that many voters, they had a ton of voters tonight. The republicans have to be very happy not just the things that went well for them, but things were such a disaster. If you think though, who does this benefit . Who is benefiting by this delay . You have the biden general counsel coming out and saying they want a further delay. We had the early indications that biden was not going to place very well. It does seem that a lot of people do not want this news getting out about bidens poor performance combined with what we know is Bernie Sanders performing well. And getting, you know bret were just getting worried that Bernie Sanders is not going right onto New Hampshire. He may come back tonight if they get results. He is i think more confident in other camps that he may come out first in iowa, but we will see. If im bernie, if i am mayor pete, if i am senator warren, all of whom, based on the early anecdotal evidence, probably had decent nights, i would go straight to New Hampshire. Hopefully youve got results in the morning, declare victory declare whatever kind of i would victory you want to declare, declare it in New Hampshire. Start building the momentum there. At that i think is the play. Dont sit around here now. Voting is done, mov move on to e next state. Bret thats what klobuchar and biden are doing. The questions about the integrity of this process are going to hurt everybody who did well tonight and its not going to build confidence. Speech of the possibility, as mo says, after they take several hours and right now it feels like an eternity. That they might say, look, it was the first time around with this system, there were some glitches, but we just bought, as we always say in our business, its better to be right and to be first, and they want to hold their cards until they know theyre going to get it right, because if they get it if they come out an hour from now and its messed up and it doesnt make sense, and it doesnt end up being accurate, then its going to be ten times worse. Thats what the smarter change they made was the paper ballots this time. At the paper trail is going to be what saves them. Back to paper. Its the safest thing. We are seeing numbers from pledges like ames, iowa, where byron york was tonight on the republicans the Republican Caucus out there. They were staggeringly higher than the estimated that have, 100 people come and it was several hundred people showed up and of course he obviously we all know he was going to win, he won big, big numbers for them. In bloombergs chances improve when you dont have an immediate clear winner out of iowa because nobody gets to publicity momentum or Pete Buttigieg speak any moment now. Senator Elizabeth Warren in her famous selfie mode. I went to a war an event and a selfish take a long time. I mean, they take three self is, the post speech selfies, and then theres a big line to get bailey the dog to have selfish with. And im not joking. There were people that were 200 long to get a picture with the dog. Martha she spends hours and hours are all of these events and she prides herself on it. She says its the way to connect with viewers, 121 and shes a big believer in it. Shes got a tremendous amount of stamina for standing there for hours taking selfies, but Elizabeth Warren i think also is an interesting story tonight, when we get some votes, she might be. But the feeling was that she was sort of regaining a little bit of momentum. And we will see if that turns out to be the case when we cut the numbers. Bret interesting dance moves. Another thing thats interesting is when a lot of people want to compare Bernie Sanders to donald trump, they are both perceived as outsider candidates who are going against. I kind of find Bernie Sanders relative silence tonight to be fascinating in light of that. When donald trump donald trump secure the nomination in part by just engaging in a dogfight with the establishment. Whenever he felt that he was being poorly treated, he fought back and bernie has had to deal with a couple of slights in recent days, the loss of the poll numbers that should have provided him momentum going into tonight and then the shenanigans with tonight and if this were donald trump youd be on twitter, hed be questioning the integrity, he would be much more willing to speak publicly against it and youre just not seeing that with bernie. Bret maybe he feels partly response will because he did really push for the situation that we are watching play option a. Maybe he feels a little bit responsible. Many of these new rules were pushed by his campaign. Bret there are a number of sources here, we are going to check them out and ask the Democratic Party for response, but they are saying on twitter that they do not respect results tonight from the iowa caucuse. If that is true, that is going to be quite something because it will be a story lost tonight for any results, even as these precincts are sitting on hold for an hour trying to call in their delegates and the numbers from all of these different precincts that have been happening. Martha and it would add up to what we anticipated because weve just been hearing what a mess everything is and people getting hung up on and text messaging, results to each other and then driving them in cars to the headquarters. As i said earlier, i think its a list of possible to imagine how theyre going to sort this out in these hours this evening unless something dramatically changes and it gets called off. Bret what about that . Not reporting a . That would be a bad thing. No one is saying that all is well, nothing to see her. Theres a lot to see here, were just not seeing it, but having said that, i still believe that the backup plan that they have with the paper ballots is going to ensure that its right and while we have time to look after the fact, look back at what went wrong and how to do it better next time and open the door to question whether or not iowa should even go first, right now all i care about is getting the right results as soon as we can. We are going to try to get and it looks like theyre getting a little bit fired up with people getting ready for him to come out. We are going to try to get some democratic officials. Real life people from the iowa Democratic Party or at least some sources tied to them to give us some information so as we wait on mayor pete, what you say we take a break . Well, martha, what youre seeing right now is a south bend Democratic Party chair gladys mohamed doing part of the warmup act for Pete Buttigieg as they are anticipating his arrival on stage in a short time from you. Despite all of the problems and despite all of the uncertainty, the awkward silence is that saw here at this event, there is a sense of optimism that Pete Buttigieg did very well in his campaign did very well in iowa. In fact, what we are hearing from the campaign is the over performed expectations to the tune of 5 . They did very well according to their feedback right now in the Rural Counties and what theyre calling the obama trunk counties, those of the counties that went for obama twice and then one for trump in 2016. And thats where Pete Buttigieg and his campaign really tried to extend their work, try to you saw him sure hell present himself as the adult in the room working for the moderates, and with that being said, i will send it back to you, martha. Martha 31 counties one for President Trump that were obama counties and Pete Buttigieg spent a lot of time in them. They seem to think they did very well in them, but we dont know. Bret we dont know, we cant trust martha if they will take their word for it at least for the moment. Bret lets bring in Chris Wallace in washington. David axelrod tweeted out about an hour ago that at this point we had already spoken and were well into the celebration in 20081 barack obama won here in iowa. Your thoughts at this moment . Bret well, exactly. There was a real feeling and drama and theater of 2008 and we got the results and we saw Barack Obamas victory statement and we had the wind at his back. Of course he lost the next week in New Hampshire, but it had a feeling of a beginning, a middle, and an end. And we are being cheated out of all of this tonight. And i dont mean us the reporters. But the country, and you know, youve got to feel badly for people like Amy Klobuchar, who spent almost three months total in terms of the number of days she spent in iowa. Almost 200 events. Buttigieg spent weeks here, well over 100 events and other candidates as well and they just arent going to get assuming they do well the kind of bump, the kind of push, the momentum that they worked so hard to get the matter whether they finish well or not, because, you know im a know you are reporting that theres a possibility or not even going to know tonight. We may open the papers tomorrow and turn on the morning news shows and still not know who won. And the train, the circus rolls on into New Hampshire, into the state of the union. Into the acquittal vote for President Trump. And the iowa bump in the socalled three tickets out of iowa just is not going to happen this year. Theres just no doubt about it and its a very very unfortunate thing, and it also does give a kind of an easy talking point to republicans to say hey, if they cant do this, they cant run the country. Im not sure i see the connection there, but it just puts a stain on the Democratic Party and the whole beginning of this democratic effort to unseat donald trump, and its all selfinflicted. Martha i would save all the speeches that weve dipped into here, this one sounds the most like someone who is claiming victory of the evening. He said i was shocked the nation. We are not sure exactly with what or how but we do feel a little shocked that we dont have any results to report. That much we can say for sure. But lets bring in our panel. An hour ago, two hours ago i was optimistic for them that they could figure out a way to get this done. This is really too bad for the state. And Bernie Sanders made this possible. This was what Bernie Sanders has brought in the democrats as a party with the rules that theyve changed nevada is coming up. Thats a caucus too. With new rules. When we look forward to the convention in milwaukee. The changes that Bernie Sanders extorted out of the Democratic Party in exchange for his support to stay within the party are going to continue to wreak havoc within his party. Theyre going to pay a serious price for it. Bret in 1992, dana, bill clinton came in fourth year, went on to come second to New Hampshire. I will really didnt matter. This could be New Hampshires moment to matter. I was not going to matter. It will matter in a different way in terms of the gross incompetence of the evening, that kind of matter, but i think that all of these candidates they also tonight, Pete Buttigieg being the most boisterous, saying going to hampshire, see you there. I do wonder how i with and tries to fix this. I have my heart breaks for some of the volunteers who gave every evening after work saturdays and sundays and its may be for nothing. Martha i agree. Because theres so many people in a state or so engaged and they love the role that they play in this process every four years and they have been let down in a very big way tonight, which i think is very sad. And its very easy to see a scenario earlier tonight i thought ike i was going on a limb to say it was easy to see a scenario where we didnt know until tomorrow. Now im thinking it could be days. Its possible, right . It could be something that is fought over and wrestled over for who knows who knows how long. I think thats exactly right. I think its inevitable it will be over and wrestled over and thats why theres two things that intrigued me. One is sanders says hes staying, everyone else is leaving after i dont know how you can give a speech like that. Come on. Elizabeth warren said she punched over her weight Amy Klobuchar said she punched over her weight. But mayor pete comes out and says its victorious. I mean, i just dont get it. That indicts his own level of credibility, doesnt it . I dont get it. He did say that his campaign has indications by all indications. He had people all over the state. They took pictures of precinct cards and theyve been sending them in. That was part of his old brand, that he is the calm one. The senator with good judgment and hes not going to go are going to be able to trust him. And its like martha so come out and say we have very good indications, and he did really well tonight. Of course we cant get ahead of ourselves, but you know lets go back though to where we were when we started this evening, which is nationally and even here in iowa we thought it was a two man race. We think this is about Bernie Sanders and joe biden. Joe biden has left. Bernie sanders staying behind. Without maybe thats an indication that he feels hes done well. But now, with this note that we have the indication that joe biden is going to fight and say hey, this thing was so screwed up, what would you trust any results coming from iowa in the morning . It now looks like you really have not changed where we started the night. Bret end of joe biden wasnt performing well, this could be a good thing for him to get another run in New Hampshire. I know, but listen, whats so interesting, among many things that happen tonight, but the fact that theres actually a g. O. P. Caucus tonight, caucuses and that they were like record turnout for those people tonight when youve got in the coming who doesnt have any real serious challengers. If that kind get lost in the shovels also because everybody wants to know whats happening with the democrats, but amazing to see the crowds were willing to come out and support a president whose nomination did not seem to be in any kind of, you know, limbo at this point. Exactly. They turned out for him recently in a rally. They turned out for him tonight as well and hes got to feel shes got to feel good about that support that he sees in iowa. Speak of the state of the union tomorrow or today i should say. Shannon i can come at you talked about, folks were going to loose the momentum, they might have gotten by coming out saying the top name here. Heres what we know right now. We are told that the iowa Democratic Party has been doing Quality Control checks after finding inconsistencies in the reporting of three sets of results. No word on details tonight, what exactly that means. Is been hard to get really any answers or intel from the folks in charge. Several campaigns are telling fox that the people running the system for figuring out the whole thing with the results have not communicated with them very much at all. We are hearing numerous reports about a new mobile app that has not been performing as planned. Its possibly causing the domino effect of all of these delays. One caucus secretary said he was on hold for more than an hour trying to call in the oldfashioned way and reporters precinct results. A lot of folks jammed up trying to do with the Old School Way to get these results in greater early data showing that iowa is on pace for 2016 in terms of voter turnout, which is still significantly lower than in the 2008 Democratic Caucuses when thensenator barack obama made history on his way to the white house. Peter doocy standing by at Biden Campaign headquarters. More of a sense of whats going on already. Peter, folks are giving their speeches, theyre moving on. Theyre heading to New Hampshire. They are moving on. The former Vice President , shannon, is on a plane with his senior staff and we can now officially report from his Campaign Headquarters here at drake that joe biden battled for the soul of the nation in iowa but is done because a big sign that says his slogan battle for the soul of a mention just came down. His staff is already taken a photo on the stage where the lectern is. It looks like the microphones are coming down as well after a few more sad photos. But the biden team, just flipping into perspective of how it unfolded here, right around the time that Amy Klobuchar became the first democrat to take the stage this evening, i got a telephone call from somebody with the Biden Campaign who did not really have any we had not been getting many updates about the timing. At the staffer called me and said he is on the way. He is going to be on the stage any minute. And that was really the first information that we got about timing at all. He came out, he spoke, he took pictures for about 15 minutes, but heres what he said about the way forward. Well, the iowa Democratic Party is working to get this result get them straight. And i want to make sure theyre very careful in their deliberations. And indications are our indications are going to be close. Were going to walk out of here with our share of delegates. So its on to New Hampshire [cheers and applause] nevada, South Carolina, well beyond we are in this for the long ha haul senior biden staffers were a lot less forgiving in their tone, talking about the iowa Democratic Party officials. The general counsel for the Biden Campaign sent a letter to the head of the party this evening. We are not sure if the party has received it yet, but part of it says, look, before you go public if anything, you have to check with us to see if the way that you have resolved the problem tonight is satisfactory to us. Senior biden officials are not taking to social media to say that Iowa Democrats should be questioning the integrity of the results from this this evening, the results of course, we dont know anything about. Thats what we are getting from the Biden Campaign. Amy klobuchar, who we have been reporting all night was punched in the top five with all of the top tier also gave a speech in her tone was pretty cheerful. My friends here in iowa, you know we have beaten the odds every step of the way. You have done it on the merits. We have done it with ideas, and we have done it with hard work. We know theres delays, but we know one thing, we are punching above our weight. So again, thousands of volunteers, hundreds of precincts captains for all of these campaigns are going to bed this evening in iowa without knowing if their candidate that they invested so much time and energy into won and without knowing if those candidates whatever come back really before the general. Shannon yeah, and at such a catch22 for these campaigns donate because we can only speculate about what poling had showed up to this point, we didnt get that big Des Moines Register poll that we usually get wrecked for the caucuses. We dont have results for tonight. People speculating this is going to be a big night for Bernie Sanders and is there a thought among the Biden Campaign like hey, we dont how this would have gone for him tonight. If we for them and youve been with them, but we heard them all day and edging expectations like we think we are going to do pretty well. Now they get to take off to New Hampshire without a win or a loss, but at least theres not a loss. Welcome at some point theres going to be a win or a loss, but the Biden Campaign is just saying take those results with a grain of salt. Its really extraordinary, shannon. The fact that there were no results coming in, even trickling in, which was then there was no big reveal of results made for a very flat evening here at the biden headquarters. Yes, they had been managing expectations, but they had some the local coverage on and thats what we were listening to instead of music for most of the night. And people were just sort of standing around looking at the tv and listening and nothing was happening. And then again, we got word just a few minutes before biden took the stage that he was going to be here. And then he was. There was no preprogram. There was no build up. He and dr. Jill biden just came out and got everybody excited as you can get one things are not resolved and people came here hoping to see joe biden these are his supporters, so they came to hopefully see him collect the most delegates, start a march towards the nomination and they didnt get it and now i can report that everybody is home except the people who had to break down the stage, shannon. Thank you for being up late or early, depending on what time zone you guys would like its good to have you with us. Guy, how not savory is this for the Iowa Democratic parties in a . Its a complete disaster for them. I think for so many of us in this business who are looking forward to finally sinking our teeth into real results and not talking about prognostications or polling, we are out of luck too. It sounds like there was a meltdown involving this technology and theres a wall street journal piece of how it was unsecure technology, there are a lot of questions to be answered on that front. But also these indications or at least hints from the Biden Campaign and the worn campaign that maybe this wasnt all on the up and up. Thats compounded by the statement from the Democratic Party in this state that there were inconsistencies in the actual data that had come in, which we are not privy to whatsoever and here we are talking about results that dont exist. Shannon and jessica, i mean everybody who is running in this caucus has invested months if not years getting ready for this. This is a big tip off to the whole game and how everybody runs off to New Hampshire as we talked about with the week that will include the state of the union, it will include probably the president s acquittal on wednesday. We are just moving on. Whoever did win tonight, whenever we get those results, and people will always have conspiracy theories, theyre going to want to contest it. They are losing the that is so important for the iowa winter. It seems like everything these days has an asterisk next to it. No matter what we are talkingcut night, mostly for the thousands of volunteers that have dedicated themselves to these campaigns over the last months Bernie Sanders s case, the last four years theyve been waiting for this. He actually never left the ground in iowa. Amy klobuchar was very smart to jump on the airwaves first there and eat up that time. She did have an incredibly uplifting message. I went to her rally on saturday night, was really impressed with the enthusiasm of her supporters and what she saw play out in some of those caucus precinct there. Joe biden is the beneficiary of this. As night was pretty lackluster compared to the fact that he was in first or second place in a lot of polls recently. But Bernie Sanders camp, they are no stranger to saying this was raked. Something is going on here. I did a little bit of the accident. Its going to keep going with that line of argumentation, especially post the dnc changing the rules just on friday. It has been a big weekend for what is happening here and thats going to carry on into New Hampshire, but again, i think joe biden is still the beneficiary of this kerfuffle right now. Shannon another beneficiary is Michael Bloomberg. He didnt invest any time or money but he gets right to super tuesday. And he did a lot of the Super Bowl Ad but he wasnt in the mix down at me kind of practiced out of this but he made comments today. He said im not running against the other democrats, going straight for President Trump. Listen, he didnt get caught up in this whole thing, so him missing i went out maybe at least in the immediate aftermath doesnt turn out to be a bad decision for him. We are all focused on iowa today because we are following it. And i think that thats reasonable, and he didnt. So what his comments show you is that all these candidates really, their response to the fiasco tonight is totally selfserving. So you have biden kind of blowing the whole thing off, taking on the set, leading t, by all accounts, anecdotal accounts albeit rather than real results has done very poorly. Very poorly, embarrassingly poorly. If Pete Buttigieg, who by all accounts has done very well indeed, practically claiming victory, his phrase was he used the victorious. They are trying to extract what they can and thats to be expected. One further observation i would just have a little moment of i told you so. When i heard that they were going to be using a mobile app to report the results, i said that is going to end in disaster. So many things, people think technology is going to solve the problem. In our world these days it off and just make things worse. You referenced the kickoff for this whole campaign being iowa. We just had the super bowl yesterday. Tonight feels like a flag, like a false start on the kickoff, which is a huge deflating moment. So it looks like in all likelihood are the Bernie Sanders or Pete Buttigieg won. If buttigieg turns out to be the winner, because someone won your. Someone did. If its pete, he has been sort of robbed of a very significant splash, a big moment for himself, and a chance to reassert himself as a National Player and really spike his fundraising. That hasnt been totally vitiated, but its been i would say mitigated in a way thats unhelpful to him. He said we actually have a Diverse Party here and that has been the main complete about iowa, this is a very liberal white state. If it does not reflect that the core of the Democratic Party and the most reliable africanamericans represented here at 3 it was 90 white. Thats a ongoing conversation for democrats do want the second states to represent who we are at our core. Shannon willing down the dnc the debates, and up to the point they have lost most of the diversity. Color, women, all cons of things. But now we are down to a system where its mostly white candidates in the dnc, a known change the real so that Mike Bloomberg who has not been doing this whole thing is now getting onto the stage when they have lost people like castro, others.
