Rob thank you. Shannon support pouring in from Boris Johnson. Rob he is still fighting the coronavirus as cases in the country appear to be slowing down. Jillian lets go to london for an update. Reporter the word we are getting on Boris Johnson cautiously optimistic. Overall his third day in the hospital, another night in the icu, was it to be a good night, he is stable and in good spirits. He is not on the ventilator but temperature has been described as high but is following according to reports the best lung doctor at his bedside in the hospital is one of the best in the country, not far from big ben and number 10 downing street and dealing with covid19 cases which overall in the uk the acceleration slowed and doctors in the uk and across europe are looking for the apex, looking for the flattening of the curve. Well wishes keep coming in from Boris Johnson including the queen who said in part the Johnson Family and his fiancee were her thoughts and she wished the Prime Minister a speedy recovery, donald trump weighing in as well, boris is one of the top foreign friend of the president and heres what he said. Rob the pharma bro wants to join the fight against covid19, his new plea to get out of jail. Azar welcome back. A shocking new study out china reveals 80 of covid19 patients and wuhan caught the virus from somebody who was showing no symptoms. Jillian what can results tell us that is the us responding properly . Joining us with expert insight is doctor jennifer follow. Good to see you. Can you hear us . Reporter yes i can. Jillian 80 of wuhan patients catching the virus from in a symptomatic person. You and every other doctor we have had on the progress of all been warning about a symptomatic patients is what this can do. Are we doing it right in the us . Reporter we are moving in the right direction. The a symptomatic spread is something we have been talking about because we have learned in this country a significant number of people i likely shedding the virus nra symptomatic. We think the a systematic spread may be part of the transmission of coronavirus and we previously thought. That is reason the cdc and other organizations are recommended all people where the cloth masks when you go outside, to try to cut back on a symptomatic spread. Rob lets listen to a couple governors dealing with the worst of this virus. Social distancing is working and we have to keep doing it. Reporter yesterday we noted the first potential signs the curve may be finally flattening. What the outcome is going to be, all of that modeling is on the assumption we continue to effectively do medication. Rob we need to keep people apart but until we get a vaccine together is it all about testing . Will we get to the point we are doing a rapid test . Reporter im not sure we will get to that point. We might, we might not. We know the importance of testing is a lot of places do Rapid Testing so we have a better idea what is happening on the ground. A lot of testing capabilities have been limited. Not everyone is getting a test to needs to. The other part of this is what political officials were saying, social distancing. You cant say enough about the importance of social distancing, that is at the helm of it. People need to stay home and sounds like people are heating that warning along with washing their hands, using Hand Sanitizer and disinfectant and things of that nature but staying home is so important. Kim jong un we distancing and staying at home until when . Until the vaccine . Reporter great question. The vaccine is not anticipated to be ready or available for the next 12 to 18 months give or take. That could change. We dont expect social distancing like this until then but the truth is none of us has a crystal ball, none of us knows how long we have to be in this state. Most of it depends on what we do as citizens. Jillian lets tell people what we do know is what you know as with you can help us with ms. Walgreens and cvs expanded the drivethrough, 5minute testing which is amazing, a lot of people have questions. Do you need to make an appointment, do you need to talk to your doctor . What do people need to know . They are excellent and glad theyre rolling out. Look at the official press releases from walgreens and cvs, both of them say the testing will be available, walgreens says at no cost to eligible people in walgreens and cvs say individuals tested must meet criteria established by cdc and in most cases people can preregister on each of the individual websites to set up an appointment so sounds like these are unfolding in developing. We will see how their requirements change but that is what they are thing. Im excited that people can get Rapid Testing. This will be an important step. Jillian once we get the antibodies test and figure out who is immune that is the next step which will be amazing. Appreciate it. It is 19 after the hour. 17,000 people have died from the virus in italy, the most of anywhere in the world. We are live with the drastic measures taken to seal the borders. I am glad to be here talking to you and representing our 3500 Veterans United Foundation. How are you today . Shannon we are good. Lets talk about how this is impacting 29 communities. We donated 1 million to help with important medical supplies like masks and protective gear and we are standing by to help our veterans in the impacted communities to make sure there is the ability to help they need. Rob medical supplies, emergency housing, financial support. Tell us how this has impacted veterans. Tell us the stories you have been hearing. We have been hearing a lot of people impacted in their homes and schools, everybody has been through so much change. To make sure employees who pledged one , 90 a employees pledged one of her salary to help servicemembers in the local communities so that is what we want to do, get out and help as much as possible. What we have been doing already in different hospitals, we provide meals in the icu unit, where they are contained and cant get what they need so we have been bringing meals to them. We have had 6100 meals delivered and what we have done in our communities for people who are displaced, we provided 4000 meals the last couple weeks so as the needs come in and everybody is feeling, the goodness of people, we will do what we can. I am sure so many others are joining too to say how can we help. Jillian talk about the Mental Illness on a lot of our veterans. The terminology you keep hearing as we are fighting this war at home in these are men and women who fought for us for so long overseas. Can you talk about how the mental impact is right now . Im not a medical doctor but we do have a medical doctor on staff but our Veterans United Foundation pledged 1 million toward pts support and counseling to make sure people going through traumatic events and need the help they need. They are frontline responders, to move into healthcare. So many people on the frontline inventors so much trauma before and they have to experience it again in an unknown environment and we want to make sure we are helping as much as possible and wrapping arms around people and loving them as much as we can. We need a lot of love and support. Rob we appreciate what you guys are doing. You can go to Veterans United Foundation. Com. Thank you. This message brought to you by the National Association of broadcasters and this station. Rob lockdown lifted and wuhan, china, people allowed to leave for the First Time Since january 3rd. Jillian countries are still tightening restrictions. Rob israel begins a total lockdown at the beginning of passover. A lot happening around the world, the lockdown was lifted in wuhan, china where the coronavirus outbreak first began. Experts worry about a second wave of the coronavirus, images showed cars lining up the wuhan airport as a guard stood with a sign that read congratulations on resumption of domestic flights. While life is starting up again officials are taking precautions such as temperature checks in Public Places and widespread mask use. 10,000 chinese factories have restarted many are reportedly back to normal production levels, france became the first country to surpass 10,000 of, french Officials Say unlike italy and spain, a peak is not been reached but hospitals and health Officials Say 30,000 people are admitted across the country. A countrywide lockdown is in place until the end of the week. The passover holiday comes to the end, Benjamin Netanyahu says the decision will be made later. They are struggling with many orthodox communities with high rates of infection and call for large groups and gatherings in small areas. Israel has 10,000 total cases of covid19. One interesting note about the israelis they are using hotels as makeshift quarantine zones was one of the hotels being guarded by the is really military with civilians inside. Rob thank you. Jillian people in paris no longer exercise outside during the day. All Outdoor Sports including running now banned from 10 00 am until 7 00 pm. The new crackdown comes as covid19 death rise to 10,000. Officials hope the band will cut down a large groups, running and walking in paris. From paris to dc calls to close the lincoln and jefferson memorials, congresswoman making the request for the National Park service after reports of crowds in both Tourist Attractions was the mayor has issued a stayathome order, parks in the fields, areas serving up the jurisdiction remain acceptable. Rob one of the biggest issues facing the country other than stopping the spread is somehow restarting this stall that economy. The president just weighed in on what is next for american business. There are some places that are hit very hard and other places of not been hit very hard. We have to get the country open again. We are looking at opening up sections and also looking at the concept where you open up everything. We have a chance to be stronger than we were before because of all the stimulus we are putting into the economy. Rob our next guest says it is not pretty but it is time to partially reopen businesses. Joining me to explain, bill mcgurn. We appreciate it. Tell us what you think we should do. What is this partially opening look like . I think this week which is going to be rough, what the president has been talking about, Anthony Fauci has been talking about that but if the models are somewhat right new york should move to the downslope on death and peak demand for hospital usage so that would be the first sign of progress for the american people. We have been thinking, you had a previous guest saying there will be no vaccine for 12 to 18 months, that is the standard prescription. We are not going to have that. The only other way to defeat the virus completely is if we acquire herd immunity, enough people get the virus that it has trouble finding new people to attack but there is a middle way. The answer, the question should not just be when do we go back but how can we go back and there are ways to get 90 of our lives back. That includes putting measures into our workplace. In taiwan taiwan has been successful, next door to china, a lot of traffic with china. There latest numbers are only 369 cases and five death. They do this not with the isolation of lockdowns we have. They do it mostly through tracing people that had it and testing and i think we could do that here. Life over there is a little different. My friends in hong kong say if you go to a restaurant the restaurants are open but there will be a table between your party and the next for distancing. I think we should be looking at steps like that, how do we open up gradually, maybe an office building, half the people come back in the beginning and there are ways to do this. It is not perfect but it is better than having everyone cooped up at home. Rob i completely agree to is a huge problem, all these people not going to work and people will get stir crazy if this continues on. How long will the economy feel these affected how much worse does it get for business week after week as it continues on . It gets very that especially small business. My town in new jersey, so many restaurants trying to stay on take out to keep things going and you see them struggling. It is so hard and as bad as it is, a lot of other people have no revenue either, employees that are not working, people who are parttime workers. Theres a lot of pain out there. I am in a business where i can work at home but not everyone has that choice. Rob what do you say to those who say we should stay relatively in the state until there is a vaccine or we risk spiking these numbers back up again . I dont think we can stay in the state for 18 months or 12 months. That would be catastrophic to the economy and a lot of peoples livelihood. We have to look for ways to do it. What im suggesting is not something crazy. A lot of the other nations are doing it at not having a problem. There are intelligent ways. The doctor i talked to in hartford said we are not going to go to red zones, too crowded but maybe school with the proper conditions. If you look at hong kong we havent had a lockdown yet but they have body thermometers in many of the public buildings to identify people with fevers, they are very big on washing their hands. You are in a taxi, there is free Hand Sanitizer. It is a way of life and they have done pretty well for being so close to the virus, keeping it at bay and keeping the economy running to the extent they can. The Rapid Testing could be a game changer. Thank you for coming on today. Jillian you mentioned we are not going to go to red sox games anytime soon but heres the question. Could Major League Baseball salvage its season. The tentative plan that would put players back on the field would keep fans out of the stands. Very interesting. Among the many Unsung Heroes of the Coronavirus Crisis are americas teachers who helped millions of students transition from learning a classroom to learning online. The transition has these educators facing learning curves of their own. Joining me to share those alternatives are Florida High School teacher victoria smith, High School English teacher and connecticut 2020 teacher of the year, georgia elementary School Teacher janice mcallister. We appreciate it. Victoria, i will start with you. I was reading each of your situations and they are very different, you are saying that every student you are teaching has a device and or the internet so for you that is part of your biggest struggle. Yes it is. We are fortunate that we have been one to one. We didnt have ipads for our students from third grade through high school. However at home not everyone has the internet and kindergarten to second grade had our own ipad from school or they are not having the internet as well so they have to do paper. You are not getting 100 of your students as a result of this but one positive your findings students are engaged. Most of them are. I find that students are sitting up, teachers across the district have been working hard. Our Public Schools have been really shining and students have been shining. There are some that even if they would not normally do something in class are stepping up as well. Jillian buses are delivering materials and lunches and breakfast so lets go to you for a second because your situation is different, you are Teaching High School students but they are used to learning a lot of this on devices. Our kids are accustomed to using our platforms and so that hasnt been for hurdle. I think our region in particular, my district, we are fortunate, we have a lot of infrastructure in place which eased the transition to distancelearning but right now the biggest challenge is taking care of social and emotional needs of our kids and we are grateful for Ways Technology can help us connect with them and hear their voices and see their faces but it is never going to replace what happens in the traditional classroom. A similar situation as you say social interaction is so important. Building relationships is very key and most important because we plan to many seeds in our students lives so when they come to school we are giving them hugs and encouragement. You can give words of encouragement over the computer but the human interaction, the facetoface, being in the classroom is very important. What we are missing are the experiments i do with my students, the actual games we play, things i offer 1on1 to my students, that is what im missing. Jillian how have your students responded . My students respond through google classroom because at the second level they are not able to use email so they respond to the post. They tell me how they are feeling and what they are doing and they are exciting when they see that. We had very little experience in google classroom meaning to do math assignments through google classroom was a new experience for us so the only other tools would be google docs. We were writing a lot so we are experiencing learning in a new way by doing google classroom. We have that. Jillian what do you want parents to know . We are proud of them and support goes out to all our students and myriad challenges they are facing the government district to district and state to state. We are with you the best we can be. Jillian thank you for the work you are doing to make sure every student stays on track and we appreciate you being here. Majorleague baseball could salvage its season, the plan would put players back on the field but keep fans out of the stands. Rob we have mixed reactions this plan. Reporter there is a common goal to see the return of americas pastime as soon as possible. The baseball world is divided over this new proposal, the reported plan would have every game played in the scenic area. In addition to what majorleague stadium there are springtraining facilities and other College Fields that could be used. All players and coaches would live in hotels for four to five monthly allowed to travel to and from the stadium. Now fans would be allowed at the game.
