Its about them. Not about him. So to the extent he complains about it it will be seen correctly as whining and off topic. Not really the point of this election. Yesterday, Paul Manafort his Campaign Manager was on one of the show, tucker, and he said, look, according to the dnc hacks we know that hillary really wanted her debates with bernie to be on the least watched nights of the week and so then you see this and its kind of like, well, maybe the fix is in or maybe its just a coincidence. Because there are so many out there. Again, everybody in power hates trump. So i mean, you know, im willing to believe anything. But whats the right response . Is the right response, theyre shafting me. No, the right response is i dont care. I have a message that ordinary voters agree with and i will bring that message any place, any time and the strength of my words will prevail. Thats what the strong candidate says. You dont whine about the timing. Come on. You say, you know, you bring up khan, listen, i heard him. I feel very sorry for his loss. Move on. The story is dead. Thats exactly right. The problem is he didnt say that in the initial answer and you can make the equivalence to pat smith and the benghazi families. But the fact that he didnt say it in the initial answer is what caused the big problem. I dont think its just going to go away. I think it is an issue. Well, we have had other major stories. They tend to go away. Well see what happens now. Now that were in the general. It seems as though hes not getting any leeway. Do you see the big difference between the way the media handles the trump controversies now as opposed to during the primary process . Big time. I mean, jump on them 100 . This one was seem it seemed like to cross some kind of line. We talked about it many times. Things hes said have not been affecting his campaign. The john mccain p. O. W. Statement and other statements, but this one with a gold star family who lost their son i think crossed some line and that everybody it on the front page of every paper. I think media are going to cover it because it is a story. And theres a lot of talk about whether or not theres some hypocrisy being seen on the part of Hillary Clinton and her camp. When you look at the benghazi story and you look at the the family members that have been speaking out in particular pat smith what you just mentioned who personally blames hillary for her son being killed in benghazi, Hillary Clinton and now on multiple occasions has called the family members this one in particular, a liar. Listen. She lied to me and then called me a liar. I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son. Personally. And in an email to her daughter, shortly after the attack, Hillary Clinton blamed it on terrorism. When i saw Hillary Clinton at seans coffin ceremony just days later, she looked me square in the eye and told me a video was responsible. [ crowd boos ] since then, i have repeatedly asked Hillary Clinton to explain to me the real reason why my son is dead. Im still waiting. I dont hold any ill feeling for someone who in that moment may not fully recall everything that was or wasnt said. I think there has been a confusion in the minds of some and exploiting that confusion for the advantage of others. You know, bret, captain khans parents are entitled to any opinion they want, but there does seem to be a double standard to many where youve got both of these parents who lost their children. The khan story getting a lot of play and regarding Hillary Clinton being personally responsible as pat smith just said, not so much. Youre exactly right. I mean, both of those those are legitimate points about the coverage, about pat smith and how she was treated after she gave her statement. At the Republican Convention. Shes not the only parent at the time that recalled what she recalled Hillary Clinton telling her as her sons body came back. Its not like its just her dealing with the emotion of the loss. Youre right. And that equivalence is a fair point to make. But i will say that Hillary Clinton when she does talk about it usually inserts the line, i feel for their loss. I cant imagine their loss. Some kind of preamble to saying that shes mistaken about what she heard. That is what was not in the donald trump answer at the beginning and that is what is in the statements afterwards that theyre making clear that they honor the sacrifice. Now, donald trump can fight back when hes challenged by, you know, someone whos a gold star family. But it seems like the decency at the beginning is what is under attack or lack of it. As you know our colleague Chris Wallace, you know him better, your office is closer to him than us. He had a oneonone with Hillary Clinton and he said that comey didnt indict, but was condemning in the way she handled her email situation and it wasnt wholly truthful. Here is Hillary Clintons response. Director comey said that my answers were truthful and what i said is consistent with what i have told the American People. That there were decisions discussed and made to classify retroactively certain of the emails. I was communicating with over 300 people in my emailing. They certainly did not believe and had no reason to believe that what they were sending was classified. Now, in retrospect, different agencies come in and said, well, it should have been. Well, thats not happening in realtime. I suppose Glenn Kessler said four pinocchios, what does bret baier think . Its not true, thats not what comey said. Comey said she should have known what was classified. And she should have known. And what she how she describes it there is not what the fbi director said. There were two people killed. 35yearold woman who got out of her car and was washed away. 38yearold man, she was from pennsylvania, hes from this area. Just outside of baltimore. He was a 38yearold man who stayed in his car and washed away. The young lady that was rescued, jamie knight, shes an Ellicott City resident. The people in the human chain were some of the shopkeepers who were here saturday night when the six inches of rain fell in a twohour period from roughly 7 00 to 9 00 on saturday night. Catching people off guard and just basically taking the wet lands from here and raging it down main street through the city and wreaking havoc on this town which again has almost been destroyed and will take months many months, guys, to fix up and get it back to somewhat kind of a normal situation. Whats your reaction to this debate among officers . Generals shouldnt be involved in politics, are you okay with that . Well, when theyre active duty certainly theyre not supposed to be. But theyre retired. They spent their careers fighting for all of our rights to have freedom of speech. So i think once theyre out, they should be the first in line to exercise their right to free speech. Yeah, but when they do that, then they reveal perhaps their political leanings which, you know, they want to remain apolitical. General allen actually was on a little while ago, talking about how he agonized over whether or not to appear at the convention. Heres what he said yesterday on this week. It was not an easy decision for me to come off the bench, to make these comments. Er i dont intend to remain active in this effort. I wanted to make sure it was very clear that i supported this particular candidate, Hillary Clinton, to be president and the commander of chief and i decry these comments that put us on the track for a Civil Military crisis. Famously, there are some military leaders who did wind up running for office. Eisenhower, grant, people like that. But for the most part, theyre the exceptions to the rule. Yeah, we have had plenty of president s who had military service and we always considered that experience to be very valuable and we listen to them more. So i dont see any reason why once youre retired again that you dont have the right to speak out. I do think though that you have to look at your own conscience and think if you are representing the facts as you know them in a truthful manner. I think that can be a little bit of an issue here. I think you bear some respond to be honest, have integrity because there are other generals who are sitting in on meetings that you dont want the president or somebody else to wonder if they should invite them in on the meeting if theyre active duty to see if theyll criticize them later. I think you really as a military leader you have that right. I encourage them to participate in the democratic process. But i think they have to really be careful of the integrity and use all good points. Youre saying the good news is look, everybody is passionate about the country. Everybody cares about the direction in which were going. So in a way its good for all of us, including the members of the active duty, you know, military members to hear from these generals about what their viewpoints are. I agree exactly. I just think the thing we have to be careful of theyre attacking each other instead of the policy. I really wish people would stop attacking personally and stop overstating the issues. Like a Civil Military crisis a bit of an overstatement, but at the same time, thats my opinion. I dont think we should criticize the individuals as much. I think a little between general allen and general flynn, this is a personal battle. I think we need to leave that out of it instead of attacking the politics. General flynn, a democrat. They ran it once or twice. The ad is called peace, little girl. Watch this. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Zero. These are the stakes. Okay. Also known as the daisy ad. Why was that effective, recollerex . Clearly one of the most famous ads ever run in american politics. When you take the innocence and the sweetness of a little girl and juxtapose them previously of a rocket launch and then into the nuclear attack, thats something youll remember. So was the implicit message if you give the Nuclear Codes to goldwater, the world is going to blow up . Yeah. You certainly have the reassuring voice of Lyndon Johnson which is the personification of peace versus the foundation that they had laid throughout the campaign that this was a very risky choice and this is somebody who wouldnt be trusted to keep the peace. Meanwhile, to 2004, it was george w. Bush versus john kerry. Heres kerry wind surfing. In which direction would john kerry lead . Kerry voted for the iraq war. Opposed it. Supported it. And now opposing it again. John kerry, which ever way the wind blows. Oh, man. And famously during that campaign he was labeled a flipflopper. Thats it right there. Now, i dont know, but i think 99 of the people probably dont have the privilege to wind surf like john kerry does. So not only was it funny because of the flipflopping and obviously the powerful visual to tell that story, but also because it did demonstrate him as an elitist and out of touch. He should have tried bowling. Beyond that, he certainly set himself up in this case. Instead of being cool kerry, he became kerry the kook. And hes very rich. Heres Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale and the bear ad. Theres a bear in the woods. For some people the bear is easy to see. Others dont see it at all. Some people say the bear is tame.
