What i find interesting is that you are here protecting the right of the students. They have a First Amendment right to do, this correct . Thats absolutely right. A statement from the school said that, you know, the past practice has been corrected and now every prayer is student initiated and student led, if thats true. Then if the students religious beliefs compel them to make a circle or stand near their coach they absolutely have the right to do that the coach is under no obligation to flee the scene because the students want to pray near him. Ed joining us now to weigh in former nypd lieutenant and army vet dr. Darren porcher. Thanks for having me. Ed you dont think this is a good idea. I dont think this is a good idea. I will tell you why. As enlisted soldier in the military, your qualifications are higher, more steeper than the president of the United States. We have had two president s, two democratic president s in the past that have stated they smoked weed in the past. We look at president obama and we look at president clinton. However, you as an army soldier need to be fit for the challenge. You are defending this United States of america whether you are an infantry officer, Field Artillery or tank baltd. Its important that you remain focused in what your mission is. Ed to play devils advocate though if you smoked pot 10, 200 years ago as you say in the case of bill clinton. He didnt inhale. Ed how do woo that impact an infantry man . How would that disqualify you from service . I worked commands staff for years. One thing that i have noticed is peoples socialization had transcended from what they were as a common citizen into the military service. The uniform code of military justice. Thats basically the spectrum that defines what people are supposed to do in the military is pretty focused. I find oftentimes people bring that socialization into the military service. Pete we also live in a world where the outside world, civilian world is starting to treat marijuana and its usage and decriminalizing it so if you have a generation of kids grow up where weed is legal and they maybe use it recreational here or there and then they go and want to join the army. Is the army not just having to reflect the fact that society has changed a little bit. I agree there is a revelation in society in terms of the uses of marijuana. I want to say legalization. However, we look at lets say the nba, for example, you have players that play on teams that are in states where weed is legal. However, its a prohibited act for nba players continue to guest marijuana. Ed within the nba rules. I use that as a contrast and comparison. The same holds true in a place like colorado. We have an air force base in colorado. Colorado springs. Those airmen cannot ingest marijuana. Thats a rule that comes into play. It goes back to we do have a revelation in laws but at the same token, i think its of optimum importance that we have qualified airmen and soldiers that defend our United States and they havent ingested any type of illegal drugs. Rachel my husband is a member of congress. He has had to go to quite a few opioid drug abuse conferences. And he spoke with a very prominent drug abuse counselor who directly said to him do not legalize marijuana. This is the gateway drug. And does that also play into why you are so much against military members having them in these waivers. I agree wholeheartedly that marijuana is a gateway drug. We want the finest troops to come into our military. Right now we are still at war. A lot of people dont realize this we have troops in afghanistan. We have troops in iraq. And its important that we have troops that maintain an opted mum vigilance. What was their socialization prior to becoming troops in our military. We need to have the best people that qualified troops to defend. Pete as commander, military takes drug use very seriously. When you do issue these waivers it could also be a reflection are recruiting numbers down . They need different types of people . That could be a factor as well. I came on in 1986, in 19865 lot of my ncos were prior vietnam veterans. They had horrific experiences with drug use from the vietnam war. That was the last war that we lost. The reporting made by brian ross had not been fully vetted through our standard editorial process and well get to the president s reaction in a minute which is to set this up on friday about 11 a. M. The news breaks earlier in the morning general flynn is going to plead guilty to lying to the fbi so what does this mean so abc says from brian ross it means general flynn is going to turn on the president and say during the campaign, candidate trump directed flynn to go and reach out to the russians and that led immediately to the idea there was collusion, maybe it will lead to impeachment and we saw the dow drop 350 points on the idea that there was going to be political instability. A few hours later pete markets close. Ed a few hours later abc says we got it wrong. Sorry. Rachel well whats interesting is we have governor huckabee on who reminded all of us this isnt the first time this reporter brian ross has gotten it very wrong. We know that with the Aurora Shooting in the theatre, he blamed that on a tea party and all of the errors hes made have always seemed to put conservatives in a bad light. Pete and the president gets criticized by his critics would say youre discrediting the press by calling them fake news or very fake news. How about the fact that the press is discrediting themselves by the way they conduct themselves with which they pursue anything that imputes President Trump and tries to discredit him but anything ed its not just about brian ross. Ed the president jumped on that this morning saying people who lost money when the stock market went down 350 points based on the false and dishonest reporting of brian ross of abc news hes been suspended should consider hiring a lawyer and suing abc for the damages this bad reporting has caused many millions of dollars and we had a couple guests saying well maybe hes half joking maybe not. Ed and here is why it matter s because this is part of a bigger question about whether the investigation of President Trump has been fair and whether or not the investigation of Hillary Clinton and her email pete ever was fair. James comey who is now out there on twitter saying that hes a voice of truth and reason , but in fact we learn overnight our own james rosen and others are reporting about the fact that an fbi agent whose detail to the Robert Mueller probe has been pulled. Why has he been pulled . Because it turns out he was caught sending Text Messages to another fbi official that was antitrump and proclinton and we learned before he was ever on the Mueller Probe what was he doing . Pete his name is peter stork , he had been with the fbi for years counterintelligence for years and this isnt his first rodeo and the previous two rodeos for this particular agent were the clinton email investigation and fbi investigation into the trump dossier that was doctored to begin with so if youve got clinton folks paying for a dossier that makes its way to a fbi agent whose a clinton supporter and before that interviewed Hillary Clinton famously about her email scandal and it was a white glove interview that had already been predetermined because it was written two months earlier they would exonerate her. Rachel we had him on and he talked about this contempt that devon and others in congress were calling for and also we asked him what we should do at this point in the investigation knowing what we know now about how unfair its been. The department of justice, the fbi and to some extent Robert Mueller have been trying to hide it from congress and that is, that constitutes contempt. Chairman nunes of the House Intelligence Committee needs to pursue the contempt citation, have Congress Vote on it, refer it to a federal judge for prosecution against rod rosenste in, and christopher ray, the fbi director, because theyre the ones on instructing it and i guarantee this fbi agent when hes put under oath will invoke the fifth. Pete how deep does the deep state go and if you feel like your justice is being politicized then you dont actually have the rule of law. You have government who are willing to overturn and take on the sitting and elected president of the United States. Ed but the current head of the Justice Department attorney general Jeff Sessions put out a Statement Last night after these facts emerged saying he thinks this merits more review so does that mean they do behind the scenes review in washington that sits on a desk somewhere or will they appoint a Second Special council that says lets figure out what happened with this fbi agent. The biggest things are to lower tax rates for families, to make our country competitive again and look, i dont think anybody could overstate how important it is that when we cut the corporate rate right now we have the highest corporate rate in the industrialized world and its killing jobs. We see thousands of jobs move overseas every year with Big Companies moving to ireland, canada. Were going to finally stop that and reverse that trend and bring those jobs back home to america, so if you look at the house and senate bill, both of us are pretty close on that. Theres some areas where we disagree. I would like to see a full repeal of the death tax thats something that really hurts Small Businesses. Its probably the most unfair tax in the code. Streamlining it simplifying the code is so important and our bill over 90 of americans will actually be able to do their taxes on a postcard so when you look at the differences theyre not that big but theres some key significant differences that the house and senate need to work out. Were going to vote monday to go to Conference Committee. Im glad the Senate Passed a bill. Now lets get the differences worked out and get that on President Trumps desk by christmas. Ed congressman i want to ask you a quick question. We all know you just went through yourself a horrific health scare beyond that. This was just a tragic situation and youve come back so strong. When you look at the medical deductions that the house version as i recall wants to lip nate that deduction, the senate wants to expand it temporarily for two years, do you think that you can really eliminate that when there are people around the country struggling with medical costs . Were going to look at that but one thing youve got to keep in mind in our bill we actually double the standard deduction so right now its at 12,000 for a family. We go up to 24,000 for a family thats going to cover a lot of peoples medical expenses, again were going to look at all these other differences in conference but doubling the standard deduction and we have a family tax credit in addition to other things we reinstated the adoption tax credit. A lot of those things are going to help middle class families who have been struggling who havent seen wage growth in a long time. Not only under our bill as the average family going to get over 1200 a year back in their pockets from tax cuts. They are also going to see wage growth estimates are about 2500 a family in wage growth that were going to see just by getting the economy moving. Congressman how about the appeal of original mandate of obamacare will we see it in the reconcile . I think its a real important point of discussion. I would like to see not only the individual mandate repealed but we need to continue moving and repeal and replace obamacare like weve passed in the house. President trump has been really supportive of this because he sees how families are struggling under dramatically increased cost for healthcare because of obamacare and the fewer choices people have in fact in many states youre seeing where nobody is going to provide insurance under obamacare. Companies wont even write policies so we need to continue working on that. Ed last question weve got 30 seconds. Are people going to get this by christmas or a lump of coal in the stocking . Were going to get this for christmas. Its been a lump of coal for eight years under obama. We finally have a great president who wants to get the economy moving again and wants to provide real relief for middle class families struggling it will be a great Christmas Present and youll see this economy take off next year. Yeah, its a book that talks about the way marriage has changed over time, the way our expectations have changed from the bottom of the hierarchy up to the top of the hierarchy and as a result, its harder to have a fulfilling marriage than it was in the past but for those of us who get it right, the level of fulfillment is really special rachel absolutely so some people feel like were asking too much out of marriage right that we want our partner to be our best friend, to cheryl our hobbies, to be super cooperative on all of the duties that surround marriage and children, so how do we manage expectation stations in a marriage so that we can all be happy . The truth is having High Expectations puts us at risk because the higher the expectations the more likely we are to be disappointed by what we get and its for that reason many of us are unhappy in a marriage that would have been fulfilling say in the 1950s for example, but its also expectations that lead us to push for Something Special that lead us to try to say look, we can achieve something truly great here and because were able to push like that, we can achieve this level of fulfillment that was out of reach previously. Rachel you talk about in the book how we can refrain things so for example, if you say my husband is late because, you could change it and say you know , he really wants to get home. Hes just stuck in traffic. Exactly. We have a good deal of freedom and autonomy to decide how we are going to try to explain why he or she forgot something that was important to us, why he or she decided to do something generous and if we want to have a fulfilling marriage and be happy in the relationship making generous explanations for our partners behavior is a huge step in the right direction. Rachel it puts you in the drivers seat and makes you feel that you have more control. I think a lot of it has to do with how we feel how our partner makes us feel as well. One of the things you talk about and you say healthy marriages have is time together so how can couples really do that . I dont know if you know i have eight kids, not easy to find alone time but i have always believed that our family is only as healthy as our marriage is. Today we put a whole lot more time into very very sensitive attentive parenting than we did in the past and im certainly not going to say we shouldnt do that but a lot of that parenting time comes at the cost of alone time with our spouse and so an interesting question for a lot of families to address and it sounds like one that you have taken in your marriage as well is how can i allocate the time in such a way that the relationship stay strong and by the way having a strong marriage is one of the best things to do if you want to raise healthy kids. Rachel you actually suggest if you have a grandparent nearby to have a standing date where the kids go to the grandparents house. One of the ways we can try to have one of these all marriages, the top of the hierarchy marriages is to try to develop a deeper understanding of each other and connection with each other and theres not going to be particularly good substitutes for time together. Certainly there appears to be a problem in this peter strope case because hes a very important fbi supervisor and he was involved as youve been reporting in the Hillary Clinton email investigation and then he was involved in the trump russia Counter Intelligence information remember that went on for nearly a year at the fbi before Robert Mueller was appointed in may and then he was doing the same job with the Mueller Investigation when he was reassure signed in july because of these antitrump texts he apparently exchanged with another top fbi official. Well there are so many questions about the Clinton Probe and there were at the time remember when Hillary Clinton interviewed the fbi it was over the 4th of july weekend in 2016 it was on a saturday and by Tuesday Morning First Business day, wow they pete he exonerated her. Right and then what he found out later was he basically made the decision well ahead of time not only before interviewing mrs. Clinton but before interviewing other key witnesses in that case. Rachel byron do you think this new information will have to prompt the fbi to go back and relook at the clinton case or do you think they are just going to say well its done . I think some of that depends on congress and as youve been reporting devon nunes is thinking about a contempt citation against the fbi and against the Justice Department over this stonewalling not because of the underlying conduct so much but because of the fact they will not Tell Congress what theyve been asked and devon nunes himself cant do that. The key person to look at here is the speaker of the house paul ryan and if he stands behind an effort to cite them in contempt, then it could well happen. On the other hand if he stands behind it the threat will be credible and perhaps the fbi will then produce the information. In washington i think there is a lot of opposition to yet another special council because this could be handled in the ordinary course of congressional oversight if the fbi and Justice Department could just be persuaded to hand over information and then perhaps the threat of contempt will persuade them to do that.
