Well, maryland is not yet a sanctuary state. There is a Movement Toward that. Its been attempted twice in the past couple of years. We have managed to stop it in the legislature. Its coming again this year and we have to fight it what it does is tie its the hands of Law Enforcement and crebszs and jails in the sense that once we arrest someone, not so in Frederick County, but once a jurisdiction arrests someone, they cant cooperate with ice and ice cant do their job by deportation. So there let me mention a very similar crime occurred in Frederick County back in spring of this year. Where an individual ms13 member was brought, lured to Frederick County, beaten to death. And the attackers tried to cut his head off with a machete. Buried in a shallow grave. This is not limited to Montgomery County or any metropolitan area. Its in our counties and our communities. So you have groups like help save maryland, some others in the last two battles over the state lawmakers efforts to make maryland a sanctuary state and just for our viewers, the 10th amendment to the constitution says that federal law does not require state and local officers to enforce federal immigration law. But you say that you need every tool you can to combat what is being imported from places like el salvador, some of the most horrific violence humidity has seen in your neighborhoods and communities. Absolutely, as sheriff, griff, i have an obligation to use every tool at my disposal. Every program at my disposal to keep our streets safe in Frederick County we belong to and participate in the 287 g program. And over the course of nine years in that program, we have removed over 1400 criminals from our streets, more than 90 were affiliated with criminal gangs. Such as ms13. 18th street, the latin kings. We need to clean up our community. The only way to do this is to cooperate and partner with ice to let them do their jobs. So in your estimation, how much of an impact does that have on their ability to cover the white house . You know, i dont think if you look at it, im not sure that they care. Just this week if you looked at Washington Post reporter da nell ross she was caught having a secret meeting with democrats, liberal donors future of the Democratic Party. Matt im hearing that everyone knows on the republican side in the senate that they got to get this done. You know, after the failure on repealing and replacing obamacare, everyone feels the political pressure to get it done but griff, the next question is they also feel some responsibility to get it done right so behind the scenes there is a flurry of activity. Lisa and getting it done right to that point matt so youve got six senators expressing concerns from the deficit to the individual mandate as well or senator johnson concerned with the way Small Businesses are being treated. How do republicans get to 52 or how do they get to 51 in getting this passed the finish line . Matt well lisa, i think youre right with those six and there are others that obviously are expressing some concerns more privately and i think the key for Mitch Mcconnell is just to get to 50 and have mike pence break the tie. Its a real shame that democrats are just refusing to play any significant role on this in the senate. You know lisa whats amazing a few of these Democratic Senators from red states would actually be involved in this tax bill. They could get so much of what they wanted but because politics is playing big these days they just arent doing it. Pete matt i mean the president has had public feuds with what he called little bob corker, jeff flake, john mcand others. Is this a personal thing or is this on principle . Matt well ive come on your show and talked about for instance like bob corker and the personality conflicts with President Trump. I have to say that im convinced that bob corker is working very constructively to try to make the bill better and i think theres a very good chance that he supports the bill in the end. John mccain obviously is in the side of his life and that seems to overshadow previous promises which i cant really blame him for and so i think hes a definite wildcard. Susan collins is a definite wildcard. I mean, she has really been on Big Questions about obamacare and we actually dont even know if shes for tax cuts now. I think those are two of the biggest problems. Griff what about senator ron johnson. Hes been the only confirmed no. Hes upset that the pass through will favor unfairly favor corporations over Small Businesses. Where do you think he is at this very moment . Matt first of all griff hes got a really good point which is under this bill, c corps or you might call them large corporations get a massive tax cut which im totally for from 35 to 20 but pass throughs which is like 90 of Small Businesses dont get as generous a tax cut so what ron johnson is saying lets take a few more steps to make sure we tax small in the realm of where we talk big and youll get, ron johnson wants this bill in the end and im convinced hes doing everything to get there so i think they get him in the end. Lisa matt lets talk politic s. What are the political implications of failure for Senate Republicans or republican s at large . Matt i dont know lisa kind of like catastrophic i guess. Its pretty bad. Theres so many changes going on in the republican side and the coalition across the country is changing a lot. If the senate cannot get this done, i just think the Republican Party doesnt go away as people predict. It just means there will be more upsetting to the order of things and more new voices which some people really like. I think that its the reason why republican senators are really trying to get this done. They know their necks are on the line. Pete you may be asking about this but Mitch Mcconnell private ly, you know publicly is different, privately how many senators would vote today for majority leader Mitch Mcconnell . Matt i think youd be surprised hes in a much stronger position than you might think because here is the big issue and ive heard you guys talk about us this morning on your show. Mitch mcconnell is doing the job of trying to make the best of a very diverse confront. If Mitch Mcconnell goes away, the next person who steps in has exactly the same job. Remember when john boehner conservatives were criticizing john boehner by the way for a lot of correct reasons and then paul ryan said he stepped into do the job . Paul ryan finds himself in much the same position as john boehner so you can rearrange who is in your leadership but its the dynamics of the conference that change. What we really need is a change in the dynamics of the conference. Lisa so question to you what is the latest development on this case and what do viewers need to know . Obviously our prayers are with the families. This is a federal investigation now typically the state will come in if were asked to. At this point we have not been asked to. I will say this the fact that the state and feds offers a little bit of a reward tells you a little bit about what we think happen so we obviously think there was some type of assault and hopefully someone will come forward and give us information about that. Pete attorney general why the perception of ambiguity . Why are folks officials not willing to come out and say this , you know, we dont know all of the details but it looks like there was an adversary in this instance. Well its typical in an investigation when they dont have the information especially here where there was no eye witness its typical for no information to come out until they actually have everything put together so im not surprised the media speculates but im not surprised we really dont have any information thats come out. Griff attorney general ive spoken a lot with the special agent in charge with the fbi down there and she tells me the investigation is under control but just to give our viewers a little bit of a sense from where this happened its about 30 miles north of the mexico border and an area that is heavily trafficked by drug traffickers and that of course certainly something we talked with one of the union Border Patrol union guys and says look, this looks like the agent martinez and his partner whose now since we understand out of the hospital, were ambushed and attacked. Yeah, i dont actually even though the investigation is not over it would not surprise me in any way thats what happened. You dont usually have two Border Agents, one dead, one severely injured just randomly falling. Its just very unlikely thats what happened. Im very sure were going to find in the end this was an assault by drug smugglers or somebody that shouldnt be in our country. Lisa and how frequent are incidents like this along the southern border . You know we have a lot of trouble along the southern border. Our state police keep track of crimes that are related to illegals and in the last five years weve had over 600,000 different potential crimes from 1200 murders to you name the crime weve had it so we track that information and its fairly prevalent. Pete you wonder why the president and others are calling for a wall and increased security measures down there. Its a dangerous plus and our Border Agents face it every day. We want to get your point on another topic as well mr. Attorney general. Why would a paper like this in jacksonville, mississippi or anyone else look at a policy of saying if you arent going to abide by the law why should you get federal funding . Basically sanctuary city laws including the ones in texas are designed to protect our citizens were talking about people who are here illegally and also who are suspected of committing crimes or who have committed crimes, so why we want to protect these people not exactly sure why because it certainly doesnt benefit my citizens to make sure these people are protected. We want them deported when we know for sure theyre illegal and they suspected of a crime or committed a crime. Pete why does the left want to give them a special status . You know, its one of the most confusing things ive ever seen. I cant find a justification. I havent been given justification other than they will change the narrative to claim that the laws are doing Something Different than they are. When you actually ask them about what the law is doing, they cant typically defend it. Griff ken is the top Law Enforcement officer in texas, are you getting from this administration the tools you need, the tenth amendment of course says it is not required local Law Enforcement to carry out federal immigration violations for instance if one of these murders has a container on them are you getting the tools you need to go after these criminals in your state . Yeah, you know, this president has done more to protect us from illegal immigration and from the crimes we deal within texas than any other president , so not only does he talk about it in the right way but were getting resources, were talking about the wall and more Border Agents and giving our Border Agents and Customs Officials the authority to do their job so i would say more than any other president that ive seen in my lifetime, this president has done that job lisa so proponents of sanctuary cities say it allows for Illegal Immigrants to feel comfortable and step forward and share information. Obviously youd know about this given your position. What are your thoughts on that and what would you say to them . So you know in our law here in texas, they specifically exclude people that are witnesses or victims of a crime. In other words we cant ask about immigration status if theyre coming forward so this narrative that somehow they are not going to come forward the law specifically in texas excludes them. Pete so its a fake argument ultimately theyre building a straw man to knock it down . Every argument ive heard from this whole idea of the show me your papers bill to this idea victims arent coming forward is a changed narrative. The law provides for something very different. Its all about something very simple. Safety from illegals who have committed crimes or suspected of committed crimes. Griff mr. I will say that in a nutshel a lot of the things people focus on in training dogs for dog shows are things we should focus on when were raising our own dogs whether we have a pure bread dog or rescue dog first thing you want to focus on is handling and gentle exercises so a dog like newton has to be handled by lots of strangers like the judges who column and check the dog out so you give treats, check out their mouths, pick up their paws youre associating being handled with getting good things in this case food. Pete got it. Lisa everybody likes treats. Griff so bribe . Yes, why not. Griff ive got that down in my house i keep treats everywhere. Pete you look at Something Like that like a cage or a crate and you say well is that good for dogs or not . This is the thing so if you go ahead and put brady in there, sometimes people feel sensitive about having dogs in crates but if you use them responsibly whether you have a show dog and you want them to be safe and confined or you have a pet dog whose a star at home, you want to teach them to be confined and be calm and the way you do it is again bribery. You put food stuck to toys in the crate and brady is perfectly happy with all going on here. Lisa what about leash training . With my dog i passed an elderly couple and the woman said whose walking who and i heard it and its very true. Its one of the hardest things for people to teach because youre competing with so many distractions but its always wise to start with a doing, teaching them and let me see if i can do it with brady really quickly. Griff come here brady. Lisa having your puppy learn to start. He doesnt want to leave the crate now. Pete finds it as a comfort ing place. Then rewarding them when they take a few steps with you and gradually increasing the number of steps so that youre essentially saying to your dog if you walk five steps with me and we stop and sit you get a treat. Griff what would you say with brady going back in it is the positive reinforcement of crate training so this is brady s safe spot. Its not like hes put in there because you have to go out and run errands. Theres great kids here and a baby in like a car seat and that baby seemed perfectly fine and why do we use things like car seats for their babies . For their safety. Same thing with a crate.
