Tragedy at the racetrack. A race car driver dead after being hit by a car driven by a friend of the show, nascar champion tony stewart. Watch this video. The rest of this video, so the crash happens right there. The rest of the video is too graphic to show. Kevin ward, jr. Reportedly thrown 50 feet down the dirt track during the race in upstate new york. He had gotten out of his car in apparent anger of being clipped and spun around by stewart. This is amateur video shot by a spectator. It shows stewart swerving but still hitting him. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital. Steward has been questioned and released. Full any cooperating with the authorities. The investigation is currently not a criminal matter. Toe know stewart eats company releasing this statem t statement. A tragic accident took place last night during a sprint cup race in which tone sni stewart was participating in. Tony was unhurt but a fellow competitor lost his life. A lot of questions this morning. Were asking anybody at the race last night to send us your video of the incident. That one piece of video seeming to define a lot of the you recall coverage. If you go through the writeups this morning and online. A lot of people are jumping to the conclusion that tony stewart did this on purpose. My reading of it is its not so clear at all what happened. Right. And the fact that was dark. Look how dark it was. Its a dirt track. Hes wearing a black suit in the darkness as he comes across the track. This is not common for a race car driver to run across the track. And that passion and fur very thats gotten to them where theyre competing at that level, the same passion can get the best of you. Whether youre the driver behind the heavy car thats speeding at huge Miles Per Hour or also that same passion that gets you out of the car and come into oncoming the its a dangerous place to walk around. Its dangerous place to walk around. You dont want to put blame on anybody this morning. Its a tragedy any way you look at it. Some of the blame is happening because people fired up. Heres a quote from a witness who was there. He was a friend of ward, the driver that was killed. I know tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car the car sets sideways. The right rear tire hit kevin, he was stuck around the car if a second or two and then throw several yards. Tony was trying to give the message that he wasnt happy e ne ther. He went over the line with it. Law enforcement was present after the crash and it was normally more than what would be there in a normal accident. Of course the sheriff coming forward and saying no criminal intent seems to be behind this. And it was dark. More on this morning because tony stewart set to race this morning. Or this afternoon. The president has made it clear that he will not put u. S. Combat troops on the ground in iraq to battle isis, hes also laying the ground work for an extensive campaign. Yo i dont think were going to solve this problem in weeks. This is going to take some time. Iraqi security forces, in order to mount an offensive and be able to operate effect tvly with the support of populations in sunni areas. And the u. S. Continues to air drop food, water and others. The critics are pushing the white house to provide military assistance to the kurds to help in their fight. They have aq 47s to stand up to isis through weapons we provided to the iraqi army. Lets send aid to the kurds now. Now administration argues that much of this is going to hinge on the Iraqi Government in baghdad getting its own house in order. Back to you guys in new york. Its hard to know how real this is but there were chilling images posted on twitter by people who claim to respect isis. A couple of them show photos of the white house and holding up his cell phone with the isis logo underneath and it said something to the effect we are here and we are coming for you. And because he was utterly negligent in dealing with this border crisis, the Central Americans coming over illegally, he turned the Republican Base and aare the of democrats against Immigration Reform. I think double jeopardy, because it is a different crime, i think they would overcome that hurdle. There is another hurdle which missy brings up. It is the same facts. After hinckley was found insane, they went crazy and changed insanity law to make it much more difficult to prove you are insane. If he was tried today, i dont think he would be acquitted under insanity. Not to get all history on everyone but it reminds me of the James Garfield assassination attempt. The driver right there, kevin war jr. Reportedly thrown 50 feet down the dirt track. A split second later, he was hit by Tony Stewarts car. He got out of his car apparently furious after being spun by stewarts car. It shows stewart swerving and dragging him some distance. The 20yearold was pronounced dead upon arriving in the hospital. Stewart has been questioned and released, fully cooperating with authorities. The investigation is currently not a criminal matter, not a criminal matter. Stuart haas racing, his coowned company releasing a statement saying a tragic accident took place during a sprint car race in which tony stewart was participating. A fellow competitor lost his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Were still attempting to sort through all the details and we appreciate your understanding during this difficult time. Yet, people are rushing to judgment. Coverage of this this morning is almost universal in reaching a conclusion that this was an intentional act. That this was a killing. You can judge for yourself. You can find the full video online. It is horrific. For whatever it is worth, i dont think it is at all clear that this was intentional. I dont think the video shows that. Thats just one advantage. Authorities are asking anybody that filmed this at the track to as soon as possible send in their videos. Could tony stewart see him on the track . It was dark outside for one thing. Also, you dont expect a driver to get out in the middle of all these cars coming toward them. A friend of the victim is speaking out. His name is tyler gray. He is a witness and saw the whole thing. He was sitting there. He said, i know tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle, the car sets sideways. It set sidewayses. The right rear car hit kevin. Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards. You never mean to do Something Like that. Kevin was pissed and he let tony know. Tony was trying to give the message back that he wasnt happy either. He went over the line with this. Tony is a passionate racer. The rushing to judgment, thats what investigators are hoping not to do as they try to collect all of these different piecings of video. He is a passionate competitor. That doesnt mean he intentionally tried to hit someone. He is hit on this dark, dirt track in a black suit with all of that dust and debris and dirt being swung into the air. Wearing a helmet too. From the very beginning of the investigation, the local media made it their business to have Headline News every day on the case against casey and would make things up to make it look like she was obviously guilty. New video shows wards crew on the racetrack shortly after the accident. Police say the investigation is not currently a criminal matter. Not currently a criminal matter. According to stewarts manager, hell be participating in a scheduled nascar event later today, despite the deadly event last night. What a tragedy. Cant imagine the way tony stewart must be feeling this morning. Tony stewart is an emotional guy. The crew this morning, theyre in the garage area, they got it together inside their transporter this morning for the 14 team and i was told they were, you know, just issued exactly what happened last night and how they were to go about their day. And the car was uncovered. Tony stewarts helmet was put on top, business as usual in terms of tony stewart will be in the car today. We have five races to go until we get to our playoffs. Thats what we know this morning, the car is being prepared in the garage area, just walked out and spoke to some of the team members. To be clear, tony stewart is racing today . How could that be . Are you sure thats going to happen . Well, were awaiting some official word from tony stewart. We do not know whether or not hes going to make an official statement here today. Were still waiting on the official statement and dont know if nascar is going to make one either. But all indications are team representatives, several of them, told me here today that tony stewart is planning to race inside his 14 car. You can imagine emotions pretty high right now. What is the mood like from the kevin ward side of things and his crew this morning. What are they saying . What are you hearing . There is a print car team. We have to remember that nascar is one thing, thats the big leagues of racing. That was a print car race last night held at the speedway in new york. Unfortunately none of us here at this racetrack have been able to speak with any of the family or the crew members of that team. We all send out our thoughts and prayers because were all united, were one racing family. Were thinking of them this morning. Unfortunate circumstance last night that led to all of this happening. And no word obviously from us here at nascar. Unfortunate is probably an understatement, a man died. There has been a lot of allegations flying back and forth, you probably havent had time to read about it online. But a lot of people alleging this was intentional. What do you know about what happened . Well, i do know from speaking to several crew members that were at the racetrack last night that tony was running well and coming up through the field. He and kevin ward had an incident on the racetrack. Kevin ward crashed. His car came to a stop. And he got out of the race car and was visibly upset. Several people we have seen the video that was posted on youtube last night of what happened. And a horrific video. And he went to confront tony stewart as tony stewart was driving his car around the racetrack. And stewarts car hit ward. And thats what we do know. I spoke to crew members about it last night and thats what we know this morning. There is obviously some as tuck weaer was mentioning, ther some allegations flying fast and furiously. Here is a quote from tyler graves, a witness there, hes a friend of wards. I want to read this and get this response to it. I said i know tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars and when tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways. The right rear tire hit kevin. Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under for a second or two and then was thrown for 50 yards. Kevin was and let tony know. He went over the line with it. What do you make of that comment . I dont completely agree. And this is just my personal opinion. We have seen racers get aggravated and approach another car. And if you think about it, the person is coming at you and youre inside a race car, your first instinct is to get away. And that could be to turn left. And to hit the gas. And it is my belief that that was what tony stewart, nascar champion, was trying to do last night. He hit the gas, he turned left if you look at that video, and he was trying to get away from a driver that was visibly upset. And i do not believe that there was any intent whatsoever on the behalf of tony stewart. Bob it a dangerous sport and all of us on the couch and people at home, most of us dont have experience knowing what it is like to maneuver a car like this. Doesnt maneuver the way a normal compact car, suv or something that were used to driving. So it is hard for us to relate to this. But there are some people who think that he didnt mean to kill him, but he meant to give him a little nudge and thats what were getting on facebook and twitter and it is hard to think about anything that way. But it is a game of passion. We have seen tony stewart get passionate and get into a shoving match with other people like joey logano, we showed the video of that. You dont want to jump to any conclusions. There is no criminal investigation going on at this point. Did he mean to do something . Is there any merit to what some people are alleging . Just knowing tony stewart, i do not believe that, you know, with a driver physically walking towards his race car that he meant anything by what happened last night. Tony stewart has gotten into it with bobby gordon back in the day, with joey logano just last year, but i do not believe knowing tony and his, you know, his thoughts toward the sport that any of that was going through his mind whatsoever. I believe it was an accident when he hit the throttle, that car jerked sideways a little bit, i believe he turned the wheel to the left a little bit, you can see the front tires do that, i believe he was trying to get away from that driver who was mad because the two of them got into an incident on the racetrack. We see this not only in the big leagues of nascar, but we see things like this a lot on the short tracks, the minor leagues, if you will, of racing across the country all the time. Expanding their push north and doug is live in washington. There is two parts to this mission in iraq, taking out isis targets and providing relief to thousands of iraqis trapped on a mountain and threatened with slaughter. U. S. Fighter jets and drones have hit isis fighters near senjar mountain where residents of the sect have sought shelter. And water, food and other supplies are being dropped to stave off starvation. President obama said protecting them is just first step. The next step, which is going to be complicated logistically is how do we give safe passage for people down from the mountain and where can we ultimately relocate them so that they are safe. And the president blamed the Intelligence Community for failing to foresee the rapid rise of isis. Some say the Administration Needs to do more to help the kurds bring the fight to isis. What are you hearing in washington . What is the stomach for a protracted military mission right now in iraq . Well, you know, the president is in an interesting spot. On the one hand, there are a lot of republicans who think that hes not doing enough, he needs to get more involved, that this is just simply a contained isis and what the president should be involved in and u. S. Air force should be involved in. It is actually rolling them back up. On the other hand, you have a lot of liberal democrats concerned exactly about the phrase you mentioned, open ended, because the president said this is not going to take weeks. It is going to take months. It is going to be, his words, a longterm project. Theyre concerned about that being an open ended commitment. I notice, chris, elizabeth warren, getting to your point about democrats, very liberal democratic senator from massachusetts, came out in support of the president s military efforts in iraq. Is he hearing in public . Have any democrats broken in public with him on this question . Well, yeah. Richard blumeblumenthal talked the open ended commitment. I think that is a concern, you know. We got out, and you hear talk also barbara lee, congresswoman from california talking about a slippery slope. It is not loud yet. Remember, congress isnt even in washington, theyre on their month long recess, but there is concern from the left about the idea of being involved in iraq at all. One of the big questions, of course, is, you know, hes doing something, but is it enough to accomplish anything meaningful when youre striking one convoy at a time, one artillery unit at a time. And clearly being a ceo or any other anything else is a full time job, but he raised a great point but ceo to vp with all the new found time, has he fired his nanny or housekeeper, is he doing all the work around the house now . Liz, will you be the only one that defends him . This is his choice. This is what he chose to do. He was in a position financially to do this. A lot of men dont have that fortune, good fortune, and dont have that option. They have to stay where they are because they need to provide for their family or for whatever it may be. I think it was had his choice, he decided to do this. I think we cant fault him for that. He decided to take a step down so he could be with his family more often and i think that again it was his decision and i guess him and his wife spoke about it and they figured out financially that they could do this. And i guess, again, it was his decision to do this. Didnt mention what he was doing with his salary. Exactly. Take a pay cut. And, david, you know, as an attorney, busy guy, two kids at home. Do you find you cant have it all . You cant have this life, this enjoyable life . Constantly making decisions. There is meetings, Important Court dates, important things going on in my business life, but then the kids are just as important. And you have more important, and you have to balance the two. Americans eat breakfast alone 60 of the time and lunch, 55 of the time. Were increasingly eating alone. Why . What is going on . We have got to stop and take the time. We have got to this is one of the rules in our house and this is something my wife who is, you know, amazing cook herself and is usually the one making dinner for us, because im at work, take the time at the end of the day, sit down, put all the devices away, connect. I think nowadays so many people are eating with their friends, on the computer, on their phones, and staring at a screen rather than connecting with the people around them. As a mom of three children, also my husband and i are both working, full time, we make a very conscious effort every sunday to figure out the week ahead. It sounds crazy. We sit down with our calendar and say this is the days of the week ill be home with the kids or youll be home with the kids, we know that. Also breakfast time in our home, we make a conscious effort to eat breakfast together. Tv is off, computer is down. Mom, youre so mean, mom, youre such a witch, whatever it may be, i dont care, we need time to connect, time to be together. I get things out of them i would never get before and were talking to each other and learning how to have a conversation as a family. It has been fascinating to watch over the last six weeks. Nobody is saying anything. We didnt hear anything from the white house for so long. We didnt hear anything from europe, to your point, for so long. And we say what is going to solve the issue . Well, interestingly enough, as you brought up pope francis, he was talking for a long time about giving humanitarian aid, thank god we have begun to do that and president obama deserves credit for that, way too late, but hes begun to do it. But then pope francis also said and recently yesterday he sent out a tweet that said, the International Community has a responsibility to protect the religious minorities in iraq. How do you protect against terrorists . Well, you either expel them somehow, you either eliminate them somehow. Or you hope they convert somehow. Thats not happening very quickly. The last, the conversion part. How do you protect these religious communitys . The answer, i believe, at least in the shortterm, is a safe haven, just like the kurds have really had a safe haven and protected themselves against people who would not who would wish they were not there. Well, the christians right now, in their home land, where they have been for 1800 years, need a safe haven. Not just an air strike here or there to stop the militants as theyre advancing now. Thats a huge commitment. We know youre not a military strategist. What should the United States response be in this situation . Well, they should come up with a philosophy of governance. Whether or not the United States of america believes that if they have the power to stop genocide, they will. But we dont want to act on behalf of christians. You saw the Clinton Administration act on behalf of muslims, right, bosnia, in the 90s. You see this white house issuing press releases about persecuting groups in africa. But nobody wants to say christians are being persecuted, were going to help them. Why is that . Im not going to make a judgment of his intentions. I think we should be color blind, religious blind when it comes to genocide. We have to decide if genocide is worth stopping, well, were not going to wait until social media, and this is what is happening, thank god it has done it, social media has pushed the governance of the United States of america to act now. Way too late. But it has done that. Now we have to decide what is our philosophy of governance, will we stand and watch genocide happen and that is happening right now. My twitter is followjonathan. I had so many christians on there right now who are saying we have to create a safe haven. And our government needs to decide are we willing to do it . If so, and this is the most important question, why . Could it be in kurdistan, do you think . It is very possible. Why . Because there is protection there. They have a whole history of protecting themselves against insurgents, against radical. I would love all the radicals, all the extremists to convert and to say we were wrong. If pope francis is saying we must protect them and hes not saying how. It is up to politicians to decide how. These air strikes may end up being just kind of minor set backs for isis which seems to be getting more and more momentum. They are taking out isis targets who are said to be threatening an iraqi religious minority group. The u. S. Is also air dropping food and water to help them survive and president obama is making it clear that this stepped up involvement in iraq could be a long term deal. I dont think were going to solve this problem in weeks, if thats what you mean, i think this is going to take some time. You know, the Iraqi Security forces, in order to mount an offensive and be able to operate effectively with the support of populations in sunni areas. And isis remains on the move. The president has ruled out the use of u. S. Come bat forces on the ground to take them on. Even without boots on the ground, youve got to be definitive, youre out to defeat their command and control. Third, it has to be very, very overwhelming. If it were up to me, i would be using b52s in addition to the faa teams. The president is looking at a very limited mission here to prote protect the people in iraq.
