Its not a message that resinates with the American People and unless the democrats get a real unifying message and they all get on the same passenger and create some sort of positive message for their voters, i think 2018 is going to be a really ugly election for them. But the media have so spoiled their relationship with the American Public that i dont think people care when there are access issues or problems and so what would be really in everybodys best interest to have a little bit more balance, calm, fairness in how we are reporting on this presidency so that American People do understand the need to have a Good Relationship with the press and the white house. To your point, its very important that we recite as democrats candidates who fit the profile in the district. I work for Rahm Emmanuel during the 20052006 when democrats took back the house and one of the things we did effectively is we recruited conservative democrats who fit the profile of the districts and thats how we took back the house and thats how we want some of the red and purple districts in the country. As we rebelled as a party its very important that we recruit candidates this fit the profiles in the districts so we can take back the house. Rebuild the party, the party has been destroyed effectively and its more than just nancy pelosi, its the overall messaging. Perez and ellison are part of that problem. This is a large ranging problematic dynamic for them and beyond pelosi, unless they realize that, nothing is going to change. Abby how quickly can you do that when you dont have any new faces, any new messaging within the Democratic Party . I dont think they are any part of the problem, they are actually part of the solution in terms of rebuilding the party and getting us back on track. Does this matter this early in the presidency . Have people gotten enough measure of him or do they need a little bit more time to really make sense about how this first year is going . Lee i think that donald trump throughout the whole campaign whether it was primary or general election underperformed in the polls. Somewhere 5 and 10 points depending on the state. Its important that we take a look at who youre talking to, youre talking to somebody who is a likely voter or average american who might not vote at all and so i think theres a lot of things going on here. I also think you have to look at the methodology. A telephone poll is very dated. When i worked with corporate clients i would never do telephone poll. I think thats why we are able to see with the dials such a different response with polling because youre measuring people visceral response. The thing is it is on a day by day basis. You can imagine if you were polling your spouse, you might say, today he didnt do what i asked him to do, he went to the Grocery Store and came with all the wrong things and tomorrow hes going make a great reservation for us and im going to give him a better poll. Its very moment to moment. Abby its so true. Lee the very important thing is lets see what happens with tax reform, lets see what happens with health care f hes able to drive that agenda, keep things moving, then we will see a big bump in the polls, right now its pretty flat and i think its the way its going to be with him because i dont think hes really that concerned with reaching out to people who arent necessarily his base until he start getting things done. Of the child or young immigrant qualifies for Health Assistance under the childrens insurance programs, if the immigrant becomes pregnant at some point and says i cant afford healthcare, there are programs in the states that will fill that. The way i read what donald trump wants to do and what president clinton wanted to do was cut off this problem before the immigrant ultimately get here so they dont have to worry. And bring their families, immigrants it is not one loan person, people come to this country and have families while they are here, they bring family members over and to not recognize a sizable proportion of those who receive Welfare Benefits you cant just say this immigrant has a job, has 5 kids. It goes back to massachusetts bay, 1685. Federal law in 1917, if you are likely to become a public charge, need welfare, use welfare based on your education, assets, income, you cant come in unless you have a sponsor guaranteeing you that law, donald trump signal he would start enforcing the public charge and he is going to start enforcing immigrants come here or starts applying for benefits, they will be deported based on the public charge but end the solution is reduce immigration, improve the skills composition by mandating postgraduate degree, technical education, much lower levels, that is what trump promised and he needs to fulfill his Campaign Promises before starting a new track of legislative initiatives. Look, we tried this, and i put this on Republican House and senate just as much because, look, these guys have, like, seven years to pass this stuff and come up with some kind of plan that day one when trump got into office, this was his first initiative, like, look, were going to repeal and replace this thing. Hes the only one with any spine to go out and do this. House republicans passed a repeal under 60 something times under president obama. They wouldnt pass it as soon as trump was in office. Lets take a step back. Ill let you weigh in on that if you want. I do want to bring in another element. You worked for a long time with president obama, free country. He can speak out on health care, campaign, however, theres been this unspoken rule president to stay out of the way, at least for a few months and number two, isnt a crutch for democrats and if president obama is who they rely on, shouldnt thereby a new generation of leaders . I think there should be. But one with the obama presidency, and you covered it; right . Was a very historic presence. Hes revolutionary. Just like the Trump Presidency has been revolutionary, and were only 100 some odd days in. So i think the rules by both of these men, both donald trump and barack obama have been broken and now were in a new era where the former president of the United States barack obama saying this is the key part of my agenda, and im going to fight like hell if youre going to try to repeal it. So im going to go out there and defend it, and heres what president obama does know, the former president knows is this one in five americans are on some sort of medicaid; right . And what we see in the house and senate bill is those will be stripped with the senate bill a couple of years and the house bill tomorrow. None of these bills have really figured out a way to cover this who have preexisting conditions, which is why you hear the debate going. I hear frustration among conservatives is you have president obama kneecapping the president. But on twitter, the president is kneecapping every conservative. Barack obama has never had a job outside of government. So he really doesnt know what to do right now. Hey, keep going out there and talking. It worked out great with Hillary Clinton. You know, let him go out there. Its getting republicans all kinds to tie them back to barack obama to his failed policies of obamacare, to any other policy that he put in place that didnt work. In order to get anything done, you need both parties at some point to Work Together. This goes on both sides. I think the president has been reaching out on a lot of issues. The reality we have to understand is that health care was never going to be bipartisan, at least in this first part of it. Its been seven years fighting republicans and democrats over it. But we have a real opportunity on tax reform, on infrastructure, and frankly, something im very excited about what ive seen from this Administration National defense and americas role in the world. Theres real opportunity to Work Together. But ive been seeing, for instance, with the health investigation. House members rush to the cameras to talk about this collusion with russia, even though theres no evidence, and theyre supposed to be investigating in a neutral manner. So that is i think poisoning the well to real bipartisanship. Abby do you have any democrats in the house wanting to work with you and the republicans . Or is it really as bad as it seems . No. There really are good democrats that are willing to work with us. I talk to them all the time, but you have to keep in mind, theres real political pressure. Again, i dont think they want to work with us on health care. We have to understand at least this first part is just going to be a partisan mess. But when it comes to tax reform, keep in mind, they have pretty serious pressures in their party. When i talk about the left of the Democratic Party, im not even talking about nancy pelosi anymore. Shes moderate in comparison to Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders whos really dragging the Democratic Party left and frankly threatening these folks, kind of the more moderates that want to work with us with primaries that they even so much acknowledge that President Trump is rightly and legitimately elected. So, congressmen, youre speaking out this morning. But as i cover washington, i dont see a lot of your colleagues going to the mat for this president. They seem to be cautious. They seem to be wanting to see how this russia investigation plays out. They seem to think maybe the Mainstream Media narrative about chaos is somewhat true, and i dont know what the white house is going to do on any given day. Am i wrong about that . Do you want some of your colleaguing standing up saying lets get tax reform done. Lets get health care done because you talked about division among republicans. Im hearing gunning among republicans over health care and frankly, im not hearing a lot of your colleagues speaking out on behalf of this president. Well, thats true. And i saw i was listening to one of your guests carl higbie on a prior segment immediately turn and blame House Republicans for something about whats going on with health care. Weve got to Work Together as a team. Now, as a republican and as a congressman, my job is to support the president whenever i can, but also be a check on the executive branch. We have to play that role, and we have to play it right. But when it is all said and done, we need to pivot to what our agenda is. And so i would encourage, frankly, even the administration and the white house to pivot always to what our agenda is. And dont get sidetracked by these other issues right now. All right. He loves to stick it to the media, tell him whos boss. The question now is how is the media going to responded . Theyre obviously angry about this. But is this going to make the coverage any more fair . My sense is, no, it might even get worse. No. Of course. It is going to get worse. Theyre just going to hound us down, saying it means the Trump Administration is trying to hide something. So i would say if the white house was attempting to make things more transparent, thats probably not whats going to happen. But its pretty flimsy for the media to be chewing on because it doesnt mean a whole lot. They really dont care about this, does President Trump run a risk here . Yeah. So, again, its giving fo thotter to the media, it is another thing for them to harp on. But it also shows that they dont have anything legitimate to say.
