Amy, why bring this back now . Well, i have two children. I have two daughters. One in kindergarten and one in second grade and across the nation we have seen a trend that recess is decreasing. Last year my children had 60 minutes a week and this year they had 20 minutes a week. I have a 5yearold, so i wasnt okay with that. I just decided it was time to stop complaining to my friends and start being an advocate for my child. This was happening before no child left behind in chicago, but it was really the law that killed recess. Some people said its waste of time we need kids focusing on science and math and they need to get those scores up. What do you say to those people who say its a waste of time . I say read the research. As we met with our School Board Members we have presented them with binders full of research. There are a number of organizations who have researched recess, not the least of which is the American Academy of pediatrics. These organizations find it to be critical to the social, emotional, physical and academic wellbeing of our children. When kids get a break in the day, a short break to run and play and be kids and decompress from the rigor and the curriculum of the classroom, academics improve. And the remaining instructional time, the statistics show become more valuable, not less. Its hard for me to be devils advocate on this because im totally on your side. I totally agree with you, but there are some critics who say, look, p. E. , we have the physical education classes thats got to be enough, right . Theyre out there playing dodge ball. They have a teacher supervising them. Whats the difference between recess and p. E. . Again if you read the research, p. E. Is not recess. P. E. Is still a time where theyre led by teachers. Theres an end of the course exam for p. E. In our county. They are being told to sit still and listen. They have to pay attention. When youre imagining what its like to be a woman who is trying to raise two children and the kind of empathy you feel for the people who are keeping the home together at home its enormous, its easy to get the emotion. Why isnt there a flu shot for the swiss strain . Because they didnt predict it, they didnt predict this particular strain was going to be the prevailing strain. Its about 90 of the flu is this strain thats not covered in the shot. It is going to get a little better as the season goes on. Because its a bad flu season we really wish we had a shot that matched and right now in the works is a shot thats going to cover all strains of flu. In about three to five years it will be out. That will change the game. We need that. Lets talk about weight gains. It goes back and forth between us and mexico as the fattest country in the world. We try all the gadgets, belts around things. There was a thing called belty, a belt that would expand as you ate too much food. You love the hightech. I do. And now the fda has approved a weight pacemaker thats surgically implanted and it will shock you if you eat too much . I thrash around and screen. He knows exactly whats happening to me. What about the rest of if family . Have they taken to axle . You cant put a price on a smile on my kids face. They understood what was wrong with me when i came home and u i had bandages on my legs and the pleading and things like that. But with canines for warriors when the bandages came off, they didnt understand that i was still broken. You cant understand the mental anguish and the things like that. But with the dog, they understand that something was still wrong and they were able to fix that. And putting a smile on your face and your kids face, you cant put a price on that. Were overscheduled and people are ether just working too much, they have to get up really early to work because maybe the markets are opening and at night, they stay up because theyre trying to catch up on work all day. Were all in a very busy life. And even when we are getting sleep, its probably poor sleep. Were staying up later with with smart phones and devices and the blue light emitted. Your television. These are all, especially technology is one of the biggest culprits and what ive researched is is that predominantly, like men can fall asleep with tv but women cant but when youre having sleep issues when youre not sleeping close to seven hours thats when the issues arise, but that being said for the most part, there are some people who can get away with sleeping less. Okay, so seven to nine hour, not necessarily an accurate number for everyone. Thats right. Lets go through what you call the different types. These are we can adjust our clock accordingly. We have to figure out which type we are. One, the early bird. How does that break down . That person, that individual that wakes up really early, but wants to go to sleep early at night. Thats pretty much my husband. Goes to sleep at 8 00 and wakes up at the crack of down. Thats because he knows he can function that way. Theyre usually just falling apart by the end of the day. Then the night owl, who probably more like the very creative person who can go to sleep late at night, but sleeps in quite a bit. How do we adjust our time and hours for people. How much should you be getting if you like to get up early as the sun is rising. You need seven hours nine hours . What i tell families and adults is that id like you to log what works best for you. So ideally, youre going through your day and jotting down your moods of that day of how much you slept and then compare it day after day. Some men can do really well with fyfe hours, as well as women. We have the obvious ones. Youre an early bird or night owl. I used to be the night owl. Now, i struggle to stay awake past 9 00, but there are a couple of gray areas. Number two what is this one. . That one is pretty much you can be a little balanced. You can possibly handle waking up really early and then maybe 10 00, 11 00 at night is is more reasonable. What is is number three . Number three is more likely the person that can actually go to sleep a bit much later and then still have to sleep in just a bit more. So feel energized in the morning. So log your sleep. If they cant work individually with you, log your sleep, track what works for youchlt the next day, try to repeat that pattern. Yes and keep doing it then study your routine for yourself. Every night, try to turn off technology about an hour before you go to sleep as well as have a wind down time. If needed. Because a lot of us just have so much to think about. A 6 and 10yearold have no right walking over a mile to a park without adult supervision. The parents are claiming this is giving them confidence skills . I highly doubt that. What are you learning if the 6yearold has to go to the bathroom, theres no supervision, how is that Building Confidence when you see other parents at the park with their kids with sodas and snacks and if the child gets hurt. Parents are free to establish whatever style of parents they want, so free range parents whatever. If its done within your home, great. Here with the state law in may remember, you cannot allow a kid this age to be walking by themselves without the supervision of a 13yearold. So the cops that picked up these kids were doing their jobs. They were doing the right thing. It just happens to be that the noble intention from parents was to teach selfconfidence wasnt the noble methodology that works for state law in maryland. I walked to Elementary School with my buddies in my neighborhood in west lawn, pennsylvania. Walked to my Elementary School never had any problems. When i was little, my parents would drop me off.
