We saw a decline in 20112012 a decline in the prescription opiate overdoses. The root of this problem started with overprescribing. Because it put it out there in the community. Now what we are seeing is more illicit use. It started with the opiate prescriptions by physicians. Hit let we mentioned they are trying to take some steps now to curb that. Steps they are doing working with pharmaceutical companies to find alternatives to opioid prescriptions. Develop potent but nonaddictive drugs. Here is a big one limit supplies to seven days vs. The 30 days. Do you think that will help . Listen, they are doing great things now. Im on the front lines of this heather every day. Im in the hospitals doing detox. Talking to kids waking up from a coma after the overdose. We need to do things. Whats happening now is doctors have to be held accountable. Whats happening is this. When i prescribe an opiate. If i were to prescribe an opiate i mean to look up the patients history and make sure no other physicians are prescribing opiates. And then prescribe with a limited amount. That puts a lot of accountability on the doctor. Puts less medicine out in the community. Prevents patients that are doctorshopping from getting excessive supply. Heather put more responsibility on the doctors in terms of knowing what drugs these patients may be taking whereas now i know the a lot of the pharmacies are supposed to be responsible for that. True, absolutely. Heather you personally have dealt with this. You know what you are talking about in terms of your family. One of the reasons i do addiction medicine and i enjoy helping people with this horrible epidemic is because i grew up with it i had a Family Member dealing with heroin addiction. When i was a young child, i grew um and saw how devastating it was to the family. Literally breaking families apart. And on a personal level i saw the suffering and the money and the rehabs and just out horrific outcomes and i really wanted to make a difference. Now its a wonderful thing to see people get better. Heather so what is the answer ultimately . Less prescriptions . Nonaddictive medicine . When would someone need this . Is there a reason people would actually need these . Thats the dilemma. Thats the ethical dilemma. Is right now as physicians, heres the facts. We dont have anything to treat ron nic pain. Thats the problem. Heather okay. Opioids have changed medicine for the better. There is no question about it. Post surgical. When you have someone that has terminal cancer, forearm, they need opiates to help them lead better lives. People with chronic pain have hire incidents of suicide. We are there to help. Unfortunately chronic pain is the problem. Finding more interventional strategies istotreat chronic pain is important.
