But he also, at the same time, made it very clear how far to the lift this particular ticket of joe biden and Kamala Harris is and talked about how if they were elected they would raise taxes 4 trillion and the increases would hit hardworking middle class people through business and corporate taxes and things like that. The 2 trilliondollar Green New Deal. Eliminate fossil fuels that would cost jobs or raise Energy Prices and how mr. Biden did oppose the usama bin laden raid. I will tell you what, im reading this morning online on a lot of papers there was a clear winner. And that was the fly that landed on mr. But if Donald Trump Tells us that we should take it, im not taking it. The fact that you continue to undermine Public Confidence in a vaccine, if a vaccine emerges during the Trump Administration i think is unconscionable. Stop playing politics with peoples lives. The reality is that we will have a vaccine we believe before the end of this year. And it will have the capacity to save countless american lives and your continuous undermining of confidence in a vaccine is just unacceptable. Steve i also saw one of the Fact Checkers in one of the major papers in morning at one point Kamala Harris said regarding coronavirus the president said it was a hoax and the paper deemed that taken out of context. In fullback the president said this is their new hoax, where he was talking about the democrats talking points in the medias coverage did not, ainsley, say that the virus was a hoax. Ainsley when she said im not taking the vaccine if the president tells us. Of the president would not tell you to take a vaccine thats not approved yet. Scientists are going to approve that and let the president know and he is listening to them. He is trying to look at all the different factors when it comes to covid. But, for her to say that i just thought it was just a dig. It was just a little meanspirited. She seemed very smug. She does have she has a historical career. She is, you know, the first woman of color to be the attorney general of california, only the second black woman to be elected to the senate. And what i liked about pence last night is that he thanked her for her concerns, her sympathy for the president when he got covid. He congratulated her on her historic career. And he even the first question was given to Kamala Harris and she answered it. And then the second question was given to mike pence. And before he answered it, he said kamala i just want you to know that i feel honored to share the stage with you tonight. He seemed very calm. And he just seemed very experienced. And he went after her record. Her record is very extreme. Very radical. And he questioned her about a lot of that including packing the court. And i liked he said so let the record reflect she never answered the question. Brian right. Lets talk about something that is going to produce votes. Also with a vaccine that was an opportunity, too as much as i thought that she wanted to say im not going to believe anything donald trump says as if he is going to work the alcohol swab and actually put it into her deltoid. Thats not going to happen. But it was an opportunity for mike pension to say how irresponsible a statement that is by the way think the fda approves vaccine. I will have to look it up on google or encyclopedia britannica. Mikes pence know ohio, dakotas and pennsylvania will decide this election, perhaps. And a lot has to do with fracking. The problem is joe biden says im not going to ban fracking. The other probable is everybody else in his party wants to ban fracking, including his running mate. So listen to this exchange. Joe biden will not end fracking. He has been very clear about that. Senator harris, you are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts. You yourself said on multiple occasions when you were running for president that you would ban fracking. So i think the American People would really like to know if judge Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States, are you and joe biden, if somehow you win this election, going to pack the Supreme Court to get your way . Of course there are not those paper trails for the would be Biden Administration condemning anarchy that has been playing out on the streets all summer. But there is no reason these debate monitors cant have a paper trail when they are centralling these individuals on these issues. The American People can look them up. Its very clear. Kamala harris was misleading on issues like fracking. She refused to answer whether or not they would pack the Supreme Court and paper trails would make these debates far more honest and effective. But you have to have actually been on the ground to see how effective these communities were. I mean, im talking bombed out buildings, people that lived in minneapolis that told me they dont have anywhere else to go on their main strip. She expects people to forget that she was encouraging people to quote, unquote, stay out on the streets back when the riots and looting and all of this stuff was still going on. And its very disingenuous because if this is about protesting or black lives, whatever, there are so many black businesses that were destroyed during all of these looting all of this looting and all of these protests. There were so many black lives that were lost during all of this looting, all of this protest, all of this violence. And her, Kamala Harris and joe biden did not even come out to condemn this in any way until the polling indicated that they had to come out and say something. So, again, you had a guest earlier that says that the polling says that Kamala Harris is evasive. That Kamala Harris is dishonest, that Kamala Harris is shifty. This is what people are talking about because this is not this is very disingenuous reaction to whats going on. Brian right, rob. There was so much stuff going on law and order left on the table. Mike pence hit a lot of marks but did he not bring that up she helped fundoid raise money to get those rioters out of jail. Did not bring up that she was in favor of taking millions out of the lapd police budget. And the fact is in minneapolis and san francisco, in chicago, in new york, they all cut their Police Budgets and homicides and crime overall going through the roof. She also made promises last night. Promises for free college. Folks who wants to go to a twoyear Community College it will be free. If you come from a family that makes less than 125,000, you will go it a Public University for free. And across the board well make sure that if you have Student Loan Debt its cut by 10,000. Brian we are not going to raise taxes but it will be free. No such thing as a free lunch, first of all. Thing is when people on the left are talking about free, free, free, free, free. That means tax dollars are going to come up. Well i think its malpractice for the commission to make an announcement like that without First Talking to the campaigns. It seems very odd that you would make an announcement to the World Without talking to the two parties that it impacts the most and make sure that they are in agreement before moving forward and i think most people anticipate the president will test negative here in the coming days. I think he wants to be in front of the American People. Its very hard to call it a debate when you have the crowd in one place and the two candidates in another place its more like the zoom calls ive been doing with my third grader. I dont think that you can have a substantive back and Forth Exchange between the two parties if they are all so separated. I think the president is right to pushback. Having said that, this is premature, he may not be covid positive by the time the debate happens and it was unilateral and sarahs right. How can you call yourself a fair minded organization just unilaterally to decide this . Youve got to do it in conjunction with the candidates you dont get to dictate it. So, theres a lot of problems with this plus if they do it think about this. How on earth do you have a moderator make sure theres no interruptions . They are just talking over each other. So how are you going to police that . How do you stop him from doing that . Are you going to have debate observers at bidens basement . I mean, theres a lot of problems i dont think the Debate Commission thought through, plus it may not be necessary the president might be perfectly fine. Steve so sarah, Going Forward, we dont know exactly whats happening to happen next week lets take a look at what happened last night regarding the debate. Did you feel like it was a good range of topics that was fair and balanced so to speak . I do feel like they covered a lot of ground and there was a lot of substance. I think they probably could have taken away a couple topics that you had a bit more exchange between the two candidates but i thought overall they did cover a lot of ground and i thought the Vice President did a fantastic job laying out the successes of the Trump Pence Administration from the previous four years and also, painting a picture of what the next four years would look like. He was very calm, he had total command throughout the debate, and a very substantive and wide ranging depth on all of the issues that came up. I think people were probably very happy and i would say in some cases, surprised by the depth of knowledge that the Vice President had, not just on the topics but also on harris record and really held her feet to the fire and called her out a number of times to answer specific questions that she still, by the end of the night, had not answered. Ainsley so ari, lets play this sound bite of the clash on china that we heard last night and get your reaction on the other side. Watch this. Lets talk about that. The Vice President earlier referred to it as part of what he thinks is an accomplishment. The president s trade war with china. He lost that trade war. Lost it. Look that was i think many people thought about that depending on the president s condition, clearly his reports have been very good but here is some of the problems with the inventory youll dynamic. Already the commission indicated that they were going to take certain measures to be able to control the president or control the exchange. When youre inperson, and youre there, you know whats going on its like a live interview. When your virtual and theres elements where you can be cutoff , you can leave the screen , things are beyond your control, you also dont know what the environment is with your opponent, what may be happening there. There are things that can be uncontrollable so theres reasons to not trust how this process proceeds. I, a long time ago, many years ago, stopped second guessing donald trump, and i trust him and his sense of things i think we all should considering the reaction to the last debate and also, by the way, joe biden s bar is now higher. There were many Different Things in that first debate that now he has lost, and i think that it is helpful to him to have certain control against donald trump and this kind of virtual environment i think is unpredictable, and of course, i think if someone had a chance to use it against the president , frankly, they would. Ainsley deroy what do you think , do you think it might be interesting to see a virtual debate but on the other hand, pete hegseth made a really good point in the last segment and he said if we do virtual this time does that mean they will try to do virtual in the last debate too, your thoughts . Yeah, im not sure itll be all that interesting. Do you find zoom calls interesting . I dont find them all that interesting. Theres a certain personal dye am ic about being in the same room with somebody else you can notice facial expressions, voice patterns these people calm or nervous what the have you they could be on the same stage far apart and put plexiglass between them like we saw with the Vice President and Kamala Harris last night. There is also the question if hes in his basement will he be using a teleprompter and have people in the background giving him hand signals . If they are going to do this and be in different locations at a bare minimum each campaign should have people from the opposite campaign there, to make sure that the thing is honest. Ainsley absolutely. I was quite shocked that the commission basically announced this without talking to either campaigns ahead of time, it was totally inappropriate. Ainsley the president said he thinks the commission is doing this to help biden. Do you trust the commission, do you trust the process . Well first off again good morning and thanks for having me on. We should all put this in context. No one likes the world were living in right now and the way we have to communicate with people and our kids go to school and even how broadcast and cable tv is having to operate. We have to do it differently largely because we have a pandemic and frankly, President Trump has covid, so this is why this is happening. Now the president oftentimes complains about how hes treated unfairly, and you have to remember he is the president and he has a helicopter, a plane. He has the white house, hes able to get the best doctors so i agree with what deroy just said. You got to find ways to ensure theres fairness, if the opposing campaigns want to put people with the other candidates to make sure they arent the nefarious things some are suggesting it could happen they should do that. I think the Debate Commission has been responsible, theyve been smart. I dont know why they didnt call the candidates but its ultimately their decision and they are an independent Bipartisan Group thats the rules for these debates and i hope those candidates will participate the country deserves to hear from them. Ainsley tammy what was your takeaway from last night . Well, i was waiting to see what would happen. I was a little concerned that Vice President s approach usually, of course as it was last night, very nice, very steady approach, and we saw that how you can have with that steady approach, you can make some really hardhitting points so i was happening to see that. I was not surprised to see ms. Harris have some trouble she had not debated a republican i think in a couple of decades and the democrats realized she be remembered for what she did to kavanaugh. That same kind of smug, smirking framework that is not a good look on men or women. Its not something americans or regular people like, and i think that hurt her considerably but it hurt her in the primaries , and it hurt her in her own debates and i think its one of the reasons why the democrats were not impressed her during that process. Ainsley harold what withs your takeaway . I thought it didnt change much. I think both sides appeal to their base. I thought the interesting points from Kamala Harris was the fact that one out of five american businesses wont come back and we probably do have done, should have donald were able to do more earlier on this pandemic and Vice President asked the question about packing the courts with democrats. I am a democrat well have to answer that question better than what was answered last night. Ainsley what would you have done differently in january in the early days . Well i would have told the country i would have leveled with the country and begun the process of the defense production act to ensure we would have to import everything from paper towels to prescription drugs in china. As much as i heard Vice President pence say how strong theyve been in china weve got the pandemic from china. As much as theyd like to talk how strong, we still dont have enough paper towels and ppe in this nation were looking to china to produce it that should change and i wish that point was made last night by senator harris. We got a lot of information well learn a number of things that the bidenharris ticket is committed to getting rid of the tax cuts and jobs act on day one and that will get rid of all of the tax cuts including those enjoyed by Something Like 80 of households and benefits from that particular measure as congressman ford said on the Supreme Court, Kamala Harris refused to say whether or not they want to pack the court that leaves me to think they might have something to hide which is why they do want to pack the court and also on fracking they want to be fracking, but weve heard over and over and over again, statements by both the Vice President and Kamala Harris saying they want to end fracking or limit it, reduce it dramatically and thats going to be very bad for American Energy independence and the American Economy overall. Look i think the president s right on this , and unfortunately, i think this is a pattern weve seen play out throughout the debates, where the moderators and the Debate Commission have behaved like arms of the joe Biden Campaign. I think the first debate Chris Wallace did a terrible job moderating. Last night i think susan page did a better job moderating and she didnt interrupt as much but her questions were still, you know, its an interesting hypothetical to go back and look at the questions she asked, and ask how would the questions have read differently, had they been written by the joe Biden Campaign . And that virtually every question out of her mouth was from the left, with all of the assumptions joe biden and the democrats believed. There was really very little pushing on the other side. This decision here, to hold a virtual debate. That benefits joe biden, that lets his staff be in the room. That lets him receive assistance one of the real concerns a lot of people have is if joe biden is even up to it and if you insulate him and let him do the debate from the basement, thats eliminating the debate aspect of it and listen i think the reason the commission did this is the democrats right now think theyre winning. They believe joe bidens winning i think theyre very happy for joe not to leave his basement for another minute between now and election day and if the commission sticks to were going to do it virtually i think the president is right to say im not going to participate in this charade. Ainsley just to defend Chris Wallace hes part of our family and its not easy to debate to moderate a debate, and ive watched other moderators say, sometimes when youre up there on stage all the time when youre up on stage, and youre in charge of asking the questions, you see Something Different than what the audience is seeing at home and its a difficult situation, i thought chris did a fine job, and hes one of our friends and hes part of our family, ted cruz. Ainsley i just wanted to clarify that because we love him so as far as Court Packing is concerned, she didnt answer the question, and joe biden didnt answer the question a week and a half ago, so i think we have that sound bite watch this. Are you and joe biden going to pack the court if judge amy c oney barrett is confirmed . The American People are voting right now and it should be their decision. Theyd like to know if you and joe biden are going to pack the Supreme Court if you dont get your way in this nomination. Lets talk about packing. Fifty people who President Trump appointed to the court of appeals for a Lifetime Appointments, not one is black. I just want the record to reflect she never answered the question. Ainsley so does that mean theyre definitely going to pack the court . Unquestionably, and they dont want to admit it because they know it polls badly and they know it shows they are engaging in a left wing power grab. Ainsley sorry to interrupt you, will you remind the audience why that is so important for our country if they pack the court how dangerous could that be . Well, the court for 150 years has had nine justices. If you come in and the democrats and a partisan power grab increase it from nine to 11 or to 13, it turns the court into just another partisan body. It turns it into a football and it also starts the process of escalation. Look if the democrats take it to 11, what it means is a practical matters the next time the republicans take the majority, we take it to 13 and it just starts escalating. The framers envision the Supreme Court as having independence as judicial body that followed the law and followed the constitution. Its not meant to be a political body. You know, weve seen a democratic president try to do this. Fdr tried to pack the court and his own party said no thats too much it be bad for the court and the country and Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg before she died she was asked about packing the court and she said nine seem s like a good number it was a mistake when fdr tried to do it and it be a mistake now and Justice Ginsburg was right and joe and kamala just reminded me of that exchange on fracking also where they are trying to hide from the American People what their radical agenda is, and i think mike pence did an excellent job last night. I think he was calm, he was cool , he was collected he was focused on the substance and i think mike clearly won the debate last night. Brian ill tell you what senator the other thing that came um is the Breonna Taylor case controversial to say the least we dont know all of the facts but the grand jury did and they came up with a verdict and the District Attorney, the attorney general spoke about it. Were you surprised that a former attorney general would come out against that verdict . No because its consistent, the Democratic Party right now is demagoguing on race and trying to inflame racial tensions and listen what happened to Breonna Taylor was horrible. She was an innocent woman who was killed and now its not clear that the police did so on purpose. Sometimes horrible accidents happen, i mean, they were executing a lawful warrant and were being fired upon, and they fired back, but thats an answer that has too much nuance and detail for todays democrats. Any time there is a shooting involving the cops, where they go is demagogue, and i think thats consistent with the pattern and i will say this. Kamala is a talented communicator. I think her answer on that and a number of other things had a lot of raw emotion and it had a real power to it and i think i dont think we should underestimate that. I also think though, a lot of her answers were very rehearsed and where that came across, most clearly, was where she said repeatedly im speaking, im speaking, and its clear, she practiced that frankly to prepare for being interrupted like President Trump did in the first debate, and had it been someone aggressively interrupting that would have worked pretty well, as it was, mike pence is a pretty mildmap per guy and it looked wildly disproportion at. I dont know why the president wont participate in a debate. All of us have had to get used to virtual formats, right . Parents are, you know, having to deal with elearning which in some cases, is not what were used to, well is always not what were used to. Were having to take meetings over zoom. Its not something i think most of us enjoy but its a safety measure, and i think part of why the u. S. Is falling behind is badly behind the rest of the developed world on dealing with the pandemic is because every time theres been a choice between doing something in a way thats more safe or less safe, this president seems to push for less safe. I think its also a reflection of the weakness of his campaign, when you see campaigns getting the kind of bad news that hes been getting through this month, a lot of times youll see these kinds of increased arguments overrules, withdrawing from opportunities, a little bit of flailing there and its too bad because i think the more the American People can hear two candidates side by side even if its virtual the better. Of course the only reason were here in the first place is that the president of the United States is still contagious as far as we know with a deadly disease which reflects the overall problem, and i dont know why youd want to be in a room with other people if you were contagious with a deadly disease and you care about other people. Steve sure. Maybe the president doesnt care about other people. Steve and the campaign, mayor pete, had said by then, he could have had a couple of negative tests we dont know at that point. Its all speculation, but lets talk a little bit about the debate last night. You prepared Kamala Harris. She seemed she well prepared. I understand you, in practicing, where you played mike pence, you threw every curve ball you could at her to get her ready. How did you get that fly to land on his head . [laughter] ill tell you that was the one thing that we werent prepared for and you know, i was in the hall so i didnt even see it and it goes to show the difference between the experience and the energy where youre in the hall, and what gets the most attention on tv. So i think what youre see ing is an effort to use that to distract from a much more immediate issue in front of us. Look the American People believe that the winner of this election should choose the next Supreme Court justice, and senator harris and joe biden and for that matter, i, agree with the majority of the American People that that be the right thing to do. I mean remember were not just talking about an election coming up. Were talking about an election underway Something Like 5 million americans have already voted, and you know, there are real consequences to this. The Affordable Care act case is hitting the court in a matter of weeks. If it gets struck down pre existing coverage gone. We just saw two conservative justices, justices alito and thomas i believe write a document where between the lines you can tell they want to overturn marriage equality. You had senator cruz on before his book is about the difference that one vote can make on the Supreme Court. My marriage exists by one vote on the Supreme Court. Weve got some really important immediate things at stake right now in a debate coming before the senate in a matter of days, and we want to make sure that efforts to distract from that dont succeed, because this is one of the most important things that americans are voting on, when theyre voting on who the next president is going to be. Steve sure weve had a number of guests from both side of the aisle this morning talking about what they thought their representative, how well they did. What do you think Kamala Harris was particularly effective at last night . Well i thought she was terrific. She was able to repeatedly hold Vice President pence and donald trump accountable for their failures to protect the American People from the coronavirus. The fact that the vp is in charge of the task force and were doing the worst of any country in the developed world. I also appreciated that she stood up for american troops. The president of the United States calling those who served suckers and losers saying he didnt understand whats in it for them while he was standing on the ground of steve right but mayor pete you know the president has said knows what section 60 means. And the way he talked about folks like john mccain. Steve i hated to interrupt you but you know the president has denied that particular story . Right but we know hes lying because even in the middle of steve how do we know hes lying well because part of his denial was he said i never called john mccain a loser and anybody with twitter can go see he did so to see he was lying in that part of his sentence but not another part this was a guy back when he was a wealthy young man in new york born to privilege thought to himself im going to let some sucker go to vietnam in my place and pretended to be disabled. If you really believe the president now on this kind of stuff, ive got a bridge to sell you. Steve all right do you think it has been an effective strategy and i know your side says that biden harris is ahead in the polls, for mr. Biden and senator harris not to really speak to the press . I know when you were running for president , you know, you talked to all of the reporters every day. You think this is an effective strategy Going Forward . Well of course, they are doing press, they are doing it in a way thats consistent with safety and consistent with the campaign strategy. Obviously, its a Winning Strategy in the sense that our campaign is winning and i think, you know, the really remarkable thing happening now is how many republicans are coming to endorse joe biden . I think were up to two former chairs of the rnc now and folks like cindy mccain really laying out the fact that you can either be a john mccain republican or you can be a donald trump republican. You got to pick one or the other, so, you know in terms of the coalition thats growing the democrats, the independents, and remarkable number of republicans all coming together saying they want joe biden to be the next president , id say this strategy is working pretty well. But were not taking anything for granted, pushing hard, youll see the president and the Vice President joe biden and Kamala Harris traveling to swing states and campaigning safely because they respect the health and safety of those around them, but campaigning inperson as much as they safely can, to make sure we take no vote for granted.
