republican party strangled by the tea party. they are way down by republican primaries in which the tea party candidates are the likely winners. and we have countless elections now that democrats have won because the republicans have nominated extremists that their voters reject. that's the advantage we will have going into this election. >> what's interesting there is effectively she was just following the talking points memo that has been circulated, and she used the word extremists to describe republicans. because james carville and stan greenberg, a couple of top democrat pollsters, what they figured out is that if democrats want to not lose everythi', what they've got to do is they've got to remind people not that the recovery is working -- because there has been no recovery -- but what seems to work is the 1% thing, the thing that worked against mitt romney. unfortunately, mitt romney not on the ballot. so what they're going to do, they're going to talk about extremists, they're going to talk about the tea party, they're going to talk about phony scandals, one percent, and the koch brothers which half the country doesn't know about. >> i find this unbelievably depressing that in order to win another election with mitt romney not out there you've gotç to tell america that it is the us against them attitude, that the rich against the poor attitude. that has had an extraordinary claim that apparently the people at media matters, that george soros funded way left group helped reporters, at least her at cbs, produce stories that ran on the cbs television network. listen to this. >> media matters, is my understanding, is a far left lob group that i think holds itself out to be an independent watchdog group. they clearly targeted me at some point. they used to work with me on some stories. >> they used to work with me on stories. >> she goes on to say they are getting paid now to discredit her. we did contact media matters. they said she is continuing a pattern of evidence freeç speculation that started at her tenure at cbs. we have never taken contributions to target her or any other reporter. our decision to post any research on attkisson is based only on her shoddy reporting. >> what is interesting about that statement is they did not say they did not help her, help her produce a story. >> they said they didn't get paid money to discredit her. >> i think given the fact that media matters helped people at cbs, i think reporters at cbs need to come out and say yes, media matters has helped me on a story. nbc, same [ male announcer ] that's how we run, and nothing runs like a deere. visit your dealer or johndeere.com/1family. welcome back. the battle over the bundy ranch has now ignited a number of western lawmakers in a move to take back control of federal land. joining us is one of those lawmakers, utah state representative and one of the organizers of a summit that took place last weekend. ken ivory joins us today from salt lake city. ken, good morning to you. >> good morning, steve. >> before this cattle battle, you personally had been working for a couple of years to try to get under state control a lot of the land currently owned by the federal government. why is that, ken? >> we had this really radical idea, steve, that the federal government ought to honor to the western states the very same statehood promise it kept with all states east ofç colorado. we learned in the statehood agreements that the federal government made the exact same promises at statehood to nebraska, north dakota, south dakota, louisiana, alabama that they made to the western states to transfer that land after statehood. we have about 150 trillion dollars in mineral value locked up in these federally controlled lands and yet, steve, in our state in utah we're $2.5 billion below average in per people funding for education. >> we've got a map we can put up that shows some of the states where, for instance, those are the nine states that were represented. interesting that california not represented. we've got one more map that shows some of the proportions. look at the state of nevada. 81% of it is owned by federal. you've got half the state in wyoming, 61% in idaho. let me ask you this, ken. if the states control the land rather than federal government, how would things be different? >> what we're seeing, steve, when you have a forest side by side, a state controlled forest next to a federally controlled forest when wildfires ravage through they are not harvesting timber, yet in the state forests, private forests, they drop to the ground. on state-managed land you have states on average, a study out of nevada, states on average generate a positive $6.30 an acre, positive netç revenue while at the same time the federal government loses $1.86. >> you know, when you're talking about state officials controlling land as opposed to federal bureaucrats in washington, d.c., it always seems that regardless of states' rights, it seems lying the people who are right there would have a better idea what to do with the land than the people who live in the 202 area code. >> those are the founding principles of our nation, liberty, property, that. consequences. we're seeing the economic and environmental urgency is apparent. to quote the govern from montana of the western governs association last year. >> cliven bundy, the government says he is owing them $1 million in back grazing fees. ep says he doesn't he can federal authority on the land that his family has grazed on since the 1870's. do you take his side in the cliven bundy saga? >> this is so much bigger than bundy, steve. the issues are all across the west where the federal government is exerting control over things it was never supposed to control. in short, going back from the revolutionary war forward, the federal government was supposed to be a trustee. they do own uxe land. they do hold title to the land in trust. the supreme court, congresses and others reiterated that point all the way up to our statehood. they hold title but they have a duty to dispose of the land like they did with all states east of colorado. there is a b.y.u. law review article that came out a couple of weeks ago that goes through in detail the legal background, constitutional background on the federal government's duty to dispose of these lands as a trustee. it hasn't honored the same promise. >> let's hope they take notice and look at the historical precedent that's already happened. today, you're the first person up in salt lake city, good morning to you and thank you for joining us on this easter monday. breaking this morning, a massive unprecedented move underway against al qaeda. details breaking after this. >> want your first impression to your boss go better than this one? >> you have no style or sense of fashion. >> i think that depends on -- >> no, no. >> we've got the solution for your first job jitters coming up next. my name is karen and i have diabetic nerve pain. ♪ it's progressive pain. first you have that, that feeling of numbness. then you get the hot pins. it got to the point where i felt like, almost like lightning bolts, hot strikes into my feet. the pain was, it was... i just couldn't handle it, so my doctor prescribed lyrica. the pain has been reduced and i feel better than i did before. >> there are so many sticky situations at work. i talk about all of them in my book. i think one of the$'es that a lot of young people get themselves into is sending casual e-mails. people don't know what tone you're trying to communicate. you have to be careful. also, words like what's up and dude do not belong in the workplace. >> what do you recommend? pick up your phone? call me. here's my extension. >> be more formal over e-mail. this is a workplace. understand e-mail etiquette, phone etiquette. >> you say don't complain and don't assume your secrets are safe. >> you can't assume everything. that is the one thi' i messed up every single day at my first day. my boss would always say, lauren, never assume anything. >> your next tip is your title. >> don't worry so much about the title. it matters what results you produce is what matters. results, results, results. think outside your paycheck. join team brain storm sessions. show your boss you really care about the company. you're not too caught up in your position or paycheck. >> millenials are getting a bad rap. i hear from executives that are my friends say they feel they are entitled. can you defend this?
