The 100 million shots in 100 days, two shots per person you hear about. Todays orders would use the defense production act to create supplies for vaccines and protective equipment. Order the Education Department to come up with a plan that instructs schools how to open safely within 100 days and would reimburse states for the cost of setting up vaccination sites. Biden is hoping to quickly confirm cabinet nominees involved with National Security and is getting help from the other side. At the end of the day i think President Biden deserves his cabinet. I will be voting for the secretary of defense and secretary of state nominees. I think they are both highly qualified. I want to work with President Biden to get his team in place and see what we can do together. And we wrote those words because we thought the president s speech really was two speeches. One was about unity and reconciliation. But much of the rest of it was about the President Biden invoking problems like racism and nativism, fed things like that. At one point he was even talking about people telling lies for profit in power. We thought about this and said President Biden is in some ways talking directly about donald trump and in other ways he was talking about the people who took over the capitol, these far right wing militias. And many republicans out there, conservatives, 74 Million People watching the speech were entitled to think is he talking about us when he says these things . Is he talking about us or is he talking trying to drive us out of the political conversation all together . That was not really an olive branch that joe biden extended to the opposition in those parts of the speech. We think well need more clarification Going Forward from mr. Biden and his administration about their willingness to engage the other side in substantive debate and argument about the issues that are in front of us. Now these executive orders are essentially erasing much of the Trump Administrations accomplishments the past four years. That is going to get pushback i think from people on capitol hill. Republicans on capitol hill. And there have been reports as well that in the senate they intend to go through with a kind of blitzkrieg to pass these spending bills bending the envelope on reconciliation and such which has to make Mitch Mcconnell and people like Kevin Mccarthy the minority leader in the house wondering exactly what all the talk about compromise was about. What issues do they intend to compromise on . Whats the substance of the Biden Administrations outreach to the other side going to consist of . Or is it going to be mainly executive orders like this and running the government from the executive branch . Bill dan, there is going to be an obvious contrast here in the days to come. Dana and i will talk about this a little bit. She was in this job. And that is the media in the press room and how they handled jen psaki versus Kayleigh Mcenany or sean spicer. Here is the contrast. Watch here. Is it your intention to always tell the truth from that podium . How does President Biden plans give us one, two or three legislative things he wants to get not executive legislation. Can you give us color what is life for him going into the oval office . The contrast is obvious. Easy like shooting fish in a barrel, right . This is the give and take that is likely to be forecast in these briefings. Do they get tougher or not . Well, we shall see. I mean, you know, the Biden Administration, to danas point, the honeymoon. I think it will get into heavy water pretty quickly with what is probably going to happen at the southern border with mexico as some of these caravans come north. And if you wanted a real look into the difference between sentiment, which is what some of the white house reporters are now trafficking in and having your heart in the right place about issues like climate and immigration, mayorkas in his confirmation hearing made it clear theyre aware of the intractable problems presented by these caravans coming to the border. And they are going to have to deal with that. Biden administration is going to have to confront the reality of these families showing up and the question is will the press simply ask jen psaki whether you are going to do something about these poor, weeping families or are they going to get substantive about the challenges of addressing significant Public Policy problem like that . Thats my complaint here. They just dont push beneath the surface of these issues anymore. It is more about having your heart in the right place, having your sentiments right, which i think a lot of their audience is looking for. Thats not what a reporter is supposed to be in the business to do. You probe to the bottom of these issues. As you mentioned a new administration sworn in yesterday did not bring peace and calm to the streets in the Pacific Northwest. It was not violence from the Trump Supporters as has been warned by the f. B. I. For the last couple weeks. This was the same group of an arc consists and antifa types causing damage in seattle and portland for years and ramped up last summer. Portland saw the most violence yesterday and kicked off in the afternoon when a group of 150 an arc kifts surrounded bike officers and refused to let them leave the area. It prompted a Big Police Response and they confiscated several weapons and made at least eight arrests. Among the targets damage the Democratic Party of Oregon Office and Police Deployed tear gas and the first of two confrontations during the night in portland. In seattle a group numbered around 100 started their protest at the Federal Building protesting immigration and Customs Enforcement but moved to destroy private property. They smashed windows at several businesses including the original starbucks and amazon stores. This fits with their anticapitalism and sometimes we see this every may day since the wto riots 20 years ago. Police made at least three arrests in seattle. In denver a smaller demonstration about 50 people marched around the Colorado State capitol. At one point they stopped to burn an american flags on the steps of the capitol. All of us have an obligation to the constitution and an obligation to do what we believe is right what our oath compels us to do that is above politics and partisanship. That is i think very important and incumbent on all of us. We came to different decisions within our conference about that issue. And as we look forward now and as we look at what weve seen the unity of President Bidens inaugural address but then contrasted with the executive orders that you watched him sign yesterday. And they are very much indicative of the kinds of policies you knew he would be putting forward during the campaign. We watched him say that he will cancel the Keystone Pipeline, for example, which doesnt do anything with respect to emissions. It doesnt reduce emissions, just reduces jobs. So we have a big set of dana just to keep it on this for a second. You said to those who thought you should be removed you arent going anywhere. How do you plan to win if there is a vote about you as conference chair . Well have these discussions inside the conference. We have differences of opinion including this one. I anticipate and am confident we will be united as a conference Going Forward. We recognize how important it is to make sure we stand up and fight against the policies of the Biden Administration, the policies that we know will be very damaging for the country. We are looking at tax increases, looking at removal of protections for the unborn and looking at removal of protection for the second amendment. We have a lot of things we have to come together on as a party and country. Dana one last thing on impeachment do you think the trial should go forward in the senate . There is a constitutional process that is underway and that is something that the senate will determine. I think that again we all need to take a step back and recognize that the programming it of our system, the survival of our republic make decisions that have to do with things like the attack we saw january 6 separate from party that can never be partisan when you talk about the mob attack on the capitol. They will have to decide what the next steps are here. Of course the senate will have to decide how they will run the trial. But i think all of us who lived through the events of january 6th, all who watched on television, you know, and there are a lot of people including Vice President pence for example who just deserve tremendous praise and gratitude for Standing Firm for his constitutional oath. For doing what he knew was right. And i think its important that what happened on january 6th never happen again. I think it is also important we come together as a party now to move forward to make sure that we are fighting against the kinds of policies that we know the democrats will put forward and also that were putting forward a positive agenda of hope and opportunity for the future letting people understand what republicans stand for. Joe biden talked a lot about unity. What should he do and what is his obligation . I think we all have an obligation to Work Together. I think that the speech and the theme of unity is very important. I think that needs to be backed up with reaching across the aisle. I was really impressed, for example, with 17 of our House Republican freshmen who sent a letter to President Biden saying that they really want to find ways we can Work Together on issues like infrastructure, issues like covid. How we can make sure we get Vaccine Distribution moving. There are a lot of areas we can Work Together on. I think we need to find those and i think we need to make sure we stand on principle on those which we cannot agree. Dana i love to talk wyoming and energy but i love infrastructure. Anwar is a good thing to do as well. This administration starting off has started off at a good foot with the vaccinations 100 million in 100 days. Thats a great challenge. I think they can do it. I think also everyone knew they were going to rejoin the paris accord, thats no surprise. What theyre doing on climate, there are ways to make the climate issue come together with republicans and democrats. For example, if we bid a carbon tax and matched it dollar for dollar with an income tax rate reduction are or payroll tax rate reduction which is what al gore has always proposed it would be a plus for the economy and satisfy their climate needs. Dana i have a question the politics of this. First of all, why on the first day on day one would you take an action to eliminate 42,000 union jobs in the upper midwest of which you were just able to win in november. And also i understand that President Bidens first call was to Justin Trudeau in canada. Theyre strong in their beliefs about Climate Change and okay with the Keystone Pipeline why take this action . It is not good economics or politics. It has been a major issue for the Democratic Party for years now. And i think they just did it as a knee jerk response to fulfill a promise they made for quite a while. It doesnt make economic sense either. Bill were back in the paris deal, right . Chinas commitment doesnt require it to cut emissions for 10 years. Russia is set to rise for several years to come. Thats before we even get to india. Why are we doing this . Dana its symbolic. The climate accord is a mistake as well. China should be subjected to it just like the u. S. All of these countries should be in. Everyone should be treated equally. If the climate is such a big deal everyone should do their share for climate and thats what the paris accord should be. Obviously politics has come into play a role in the paris accord and i dont think the u. S. Joining or not joining the paris accord, bill, will make a huge difference to u. S. Policy. If were going to do policy issues here well have to get them through congress and they can be done well or they can be done badly. If you match a tax on carbon with a tax cut on income or payroll you will get a much better outcome than you will if you do a tax on carbon and use that money to spend on frivolous things. Dana i agree. I think the paris climate accords are a lot about diplomacy and being able to play nice at the table because it is of no consequence and america is already reducing its emissions and others are not. The other push the administration will try is a 15 an hour minimum wage. We want everyones wages to go up as they move up the ladder. What happens to Small Businesses and restaurants struggling now if that minimum wage is hiked to 15 an hour . It will really hurt these jobs a lot, dana, as you point out. It will hurt them. It has a very definite impact on the demographics of the United States as well. A high minimum wage is extremely damaging to the poor, the minorities and the disenfranchised and the young. When you raise the minimum wage high enough these people all of a sudden arent worth 15 an hour and they get replaced by automation, they get replaced by older workers, more efficient workers. When you really need to do is keep the minimum wage low so people can come into the labor force, get the skills to be good employees and be able to pull back into the mainstream of the employment of the country. This is important especially for youth, blacks, people with less skills and low educated. It is all really important and dont know why they push it like they would. It seems to be very much against a lot of their constituency. As the last point on the 15 minimum wage on a federal level that has a huge impact on a state like kentucky which has very low prices, very low wages. Probably half the people in kentucky are below the minimum wage if it were 15. In new york city 15 is very different. Very few people. Bill you make a lot of sense.
