At some point she will be forced to raise taxes on the middle class and she doesnt want to admit that because who the heck wants to know that im voting for someone who will make my life more expensive . Jon i once took the new york johannesburg flight which at the time was the longest flight. 17 hours. That was surprisingly tolerable, i thought. This one, 19 hours plus and they only had 40 people on board. Pretty light load. They probably saved a little fuel by not having a full plane. Schiff know himself how disappointed we are and thirdly i would say it gives the democrats an opportunity to show the American People where they are on due process and they get to say look, were perfectly content with closeddoor impeachment inquiry or they get to say it isnt quite right we want to do it the right way. And rest assured the public will learn the facts. Obviously responding to public criticism throughout this hasnt been a transparent process and this impeachment process has been done in secret. To that you say what . Normally when you have a formal if this were formal ao idsed the president would have his counsel there and bring in witnesses. He has prevented me and many of my colleagues who asked for copies of transcripts and we just dont get them. What i would suggest to you, sandra, this is being directed and put its being channelized and able to control everything about this instead of letting the American People see whats happening. That ceasefire has enabled people to reassess what are the implications of going on here given erdogan was using force to establish a safe zone . Here is what i think has come out of that. Number one, we want to get back to negotiations to establish the safe zone on the turkish Syrian Border separating the syrian kurds from the turks. And i think that can be achieved through negotiations. Not easy. Hundreds of thousands of people live in that area. How we handle this placement and welfare is an issue. Second, its very obvious as the pentagon i. G. Has just reported there is 14,000 to 18,000 isis fighters still in Eastern Syria. Another 10,000 in our jail houses there. That must be contained. It cannot reemerge to the point where they start to take territory or establish a base of operations again. Pulling all of our forces out of there and giving up air power would be an invitation to do that. The third thing you saw senator graham talking about these oil fields. Whats significant there is 70 of all the oil fields in syria are in Eastern Syria under the control of u. S. Coalition forces. And iranians have been massing on the west side of the Euphrates River to watch the u. S. Leave and they would take over the oil fields. I think well see troops stay in syrian and work with the kurds and arabs, contain isis and make certain the oil fields remain in our hands. Jon are the russians the big winner here . They seem to have moved in to fill the vacuum. I think they would have been if we didnt begin to revisit this issue. They certainly began to take over our u. S. Bases in northEastern Syria, painful to watch for anybody involved in the issue. Russia is a big winner in syria. They propped up the assad regime. Iran wants to use it to encroach on israel. Russia wants it to be the introduction to be a very influential nation in the middle east. They largely have achieved that success. I dont think we want them involved in Eastern Syria and i think we have the wherewithal to keep them out of it. Jon one of the kurdish generals is appealing to america for more help saying that the kurds are facing ethnic cleansing. Is that still going to be a possibility if these troops remain behind . If the ceasefire ends and erdogan resorts to military force to establish that safe zone that is definitely what would be on the agenda and thats why negotiating this ceasefire is so important. I think erdogan and his turk generals realize this thing isnt as easy as it looks to them in dealing with the syrian kurds. They are tough fighters and they wont give up their homes and way of life easily. There is a huge struggle in front of us. The big news here. What do we need to know . 2300 cases here, 2,300 cases all assigned to one trial judge by the chief justice of the United States. That trial judge chose a typical case. In all these cases the plaintiffs are not individuals who took the drug but municipalities and county governments who claim they spent money because people got sick. Ems, hospital, police, welfare, the type of money that a county would spend with large numbers of people who live there cant live there anymore. This sued five defendants, walgreens the drugstore chain did not settle. The other four have settled. It was supposed to be the bellwether meaning the typical case and the jury would make specific findings that would help the judge settle the other 2300. Instead of this being the bellwether it never went to the jury. They settled it for 260 million. The exact number is not quite precisely in yet. They can spend that money however they want. They can spend it on healthcare, paving the streets, distribute it to people out of work because of their addiction. They are free to do with it whatever they want. This is the first of 2300 to follow. Sandra but that number could have been a lot bigger. It could have been a lot more. Thats a great question. The 260 million is less than the counties were able to prove was their outofpocket loss. It is more than the counties were able to prove was their outofpocket loss. Far less than the tens of billions that the plaintiffs demanded. It is also less than the defendants feared a jury would award. So like a lot of settlements no one is 100 happy with it. The plaintiffs got less than they wanted. Defendants paid more than they could have. They cant spend too much because of these 2300 cases still to come. Sandra we just heard from the Cuyahoga County prosecutor, the county executive on why prosecutors settled for the 260 million rather than billions more. The proposal was to pay it over many, many, many years. We have the problems now. People are suffering now and dying now. We have to deal with these issues now. The fact that we were able to get the money in a short time frame is very helpful. Thats one of the motivations for settling this. He is right. It is a reason for settling. Cash know as opposed to litigation that goes on over the course of years. It will be interesting to see how he spends that money. One of the state governments that sued in state court, oklahoma, has already used the money to build a laboratory on the university of oklahoma campus rather than distribute it to the people who have been harmed. What will happen in that lab will be studying addiction. The point is when the plaintiffs are not individuals who have been harmed but governments suing because they, the government lost money, the government is free to spend that money however it wants.
