She has a lot of different members to deal with, whereas a lot of the young liberals, i say young, they came from gerrymandered districts that are mostly democrat. Once they crown a president ial nominee a little less than a year next july it could solve a lot of the problems. The party will have a leader for a few months. If that leader can unify the party in a race against President Trump all of the stuff were talking about right now is not going to matter. Bill i guess from the outset if you think one meeting will settle all of it you can forget about it. And i think it made it harder for democrats who believe the president deserves to be impeached to have more evidence at least in the immediate. Theyll have to continue through the oversight process to see if they can dig more things up to create more Political Support broadly for the idea of impeaching the president. More and more people from all sectors of our society are going back to work, getting wages increased it makes it difficult for them to make that policy argument. The fact that these subpoenas were authorized the day after muellers testimony in a big hearing fizzled out is part of the democrats strategy of litigating in the courts. Filing subpoena. If impeachment isnt going to work. Nancy pelosi wants to show her base she is being aggressive with this white house. So i think these subpoenas are the first and going a long string of these. Issuing subpoenas trying to drag the administration into court. If impeachment is not happening this is where the battle will occur. Alicia democrats say whats fair is fair because republicans and the president went after Hillary Clinton time and again and it still comes up about those emails, those 30,000 emails on that private server. Thats a fair point. Frankly i wish my democratic friends had been as exercised as Hillary Clintons use of personal emails as they are in the trumps. This inquiry began under the republican control of the house of representatives. What were seeing now are the democrats reigniting this investigation pursuing it in a more aggressive way. Taking subpoenas, litigating this in court assuming they cant reach a compromise with the administration. Alicia isnt this really all just about 2020 . I think it is. I think at the end of the day the democrats are looking for issues. They are looking for legal violations by the Administration Even if theyre footfalls, trying to turn the tables on the use of personal emails. They will fight on multiple fronts. Do they really care about these texts and emails at this point when it comes to ivanka trump and Jared Kushner . Bill it is hard to believe anyone really cares about this. I think for a lot of people its more noise emanating from washington the democrats have not done a good job of choosing battles. If there was a situation where there was one committee and one subpoena and choosing their target and focusing on things that matter to americans it might be a different story. What we see now is massive flurry, a shotgun approach. All these committees and subpoenas, all the issues in hopes of finding something that will stick. And everybody has the liberty and luxury to espouse their own position and criticize me for trying to go down the path in the most determined positive way. Again, their advocacy for impeachment only gives me leverage. I have no complaint with what theyre doing but i know mueller i keep calling him special counsel mueller. Mr. Mueller said the other day confirmed, confirmed in the public mind the president has obstructed justice. You know what he said. If he could have exonerated him, if he could have he wasnt able to look at the president s personal finances and thats what were doing in the courts im willing to take whatever heat there to say a decision will be made in a timely fashion. This isnt endless. When we have the best, strongest, possible case and thats not endless, either. It may be endless in terms of the violations of the law that the president is engaged in. She called you disrespectful. Thats in the political arena. Let me just say this. I have some level of confidence and actually joy in seeing diversity in our caucus. We are the Democratic Party. Ever since i came here, we have been engaged in differences of opinion in our caucus and that is a good thing. We are not a lock step, rubber stamp representation of anything except representatives of our districts and what they means. So in our caucus we have our differences. Respect that instead of making a big issue of it. Respect that. Those are our differences and how we express ourselves as representatives of our districts is our responsibility. I have never seen actually yesterday we had 219 vote for the bill. Did anybody ask any questions about that . 219. A very unified, very unified caucus in doing what we needed to do for the American People even though it was a compromise. Even though it was a compromise i certainly wanted more. But it was a compromise. When we win the white house, and we win the United States senate and we continue to win the house of representatives, then well have more leverage in that conversation. But i dont think i would never even say it was a hatchet. I do think we sat down today and we had a good meeting and the congresswoman is a very gracious member of congress. So we had a very positive conversation about our districts and how we represent them, our country and how we need to meet the needs, the diversity of america and the challenges we face in terms of issues and how immigration and people are respected. Again i referenced Ronald Reagan as opposed to the current occupant of the white house. So i feel i have always felt again it is like youre in a family. In a family you have your differences but youre still family. Does your family always agree on everything . Sometimes we have meetings to clear the air. You have meetings in your family . Oh my goodness. You may be a model for us and we just had a meeting to clear the air. What are your differences with congresswoman im not going into that. I have already said what im going to say on that subject. When i came to congress the fight was on how we deal with what was happening in central america. Who would become speaker eventually jim wright. He was speak en when i got here but he would then be the leader in the fight to stop the aid to the contras. Republicans went after him. Our caucus was divided on the subject and thereafter it was nafta. Very big division in the caucus on nafta. Before your time. Very big division on nafta. Then the war in iraq, differences of opinion. As you know, i was a ranking member. I was adam schiff at the time. He is chairman. I was the top democrat. We didnt have the majority. I said the intelligence did not support the threat that says you are calling the president a liar. Im not calling him a liar im stating a fact. People said to me then and i had been in congress over 10 years by then you are never going anyplace in this party unless you vote for this war. I didnt vote for it and a majority of our democrats didnt vote for it and senator graham didnt vote for it. It was a democrat in the senate on the Intelligence Committee and house members by and large voted against the war. In the senate they voted for it. A big division among democrats on that subject. That list goes on and on. These some personality issues and the rest theyre minor. We have a big schism in our country between what could happen in this congress and what is happening in the white house. Everybody knows we have to keep our eye on the ball. Some of your colleagues think leaving impeachment into the table heading into the august recess looks indesiefshs and overshadowed this agenda. Is there a drop dead point the caucus needs to make a decision on this . I dont agree with what they say. I think ive spoken to what i think we need to have on the subject before we go forward. But again, i respect where they are on it with their breadth of knowledge they have on the subject and i respect where i am on it with the depth of knowledge i have on the subject. I would like your response to that and specifically are there any underlying economic factors that most concern you and anything in the data that gives you pause . I havent seen the data except the figure, 2. 1 . Closer to 2 1 2. The president had used 3 as the standard. I do think that our gdp will rise when we have when we raise the minimum wage and people have more purchasing power because these are people who will spend and inject demand into the economy and therefore our gdp will rise. I think if we had comprehensive Immigration Reform where everybody is brought into the system in the way that is most productive, you want to grow the economy, have comprehensive Immigration Reform. How we not just have trickle down to grow our economy but how we have bubble up. Thats a difference of opinion between our two parties. I think what you saw was that the tax scam that they put out there has not produced the growth that the president was boasting would happen. And that it hasnt produced the revenue. Hence we have had to lift the debt ceiling earlier than maybe people had expected. So that didnt work. It didnt pay for itself and it isnt growing the economy to the extent that the president said it would. And so i think we have to instead of getting tax breaks to the top 1 . 83 of the benefits to the top 1 , we should have a more compassionate free market system which rewards work and brings many more people into the prosperity of our country. There is a move on aspect. I dont think the hearings were held because of that but create a tsunami effect among democrats. So devastating and why it was covered by all the networks that there would be this huge increase in support for impeachment. That is not what happened as people saw that Robert Mueller, who was basically the reason why people trusted the special counsel, appeared to have very little knowledge of his report or understanding of what had happened.
