But i dont think thats the road, frankly, that i would want to travel based on the facts and the law as ive seen it. Sandra well, what i think was most important about special counsel mueller repeating the details of his report yesterday was his emphasis on how russia strongly attempted to interfere in our 2016 election, 2018 election and response to a question from republican congressman from texas says theyre continuing to do it even today. In the senate we had a hearing on the Judiciary Committee earlier this week where the f. B. I. Director, President Trumps personally chosen f. B. I. Director, repeated that same message. That we need to be working on securing our 2020 elections. Tomorrow ill be at the delaware state fair where ill get to see our new election machinery in delaware. We were one of five states that had no paper trail to audit the outcomes of our elections. Well, as you know i had a bipartisan bill in the last congress and in this congress that would strengthen the special counsel, make it harder for him to be abruptly fired for no reasons. There is regulations in the department of justice today that prevent that. But i think it should be in statute. I do think an important part of muellers testimony was that he detailed a number of ways in which the president and his senior team attempted to interfere with the investigation. You just played a clip of him calling it a hoax and witch hunt. I dont believe that. I think it was an important and appropriate investigation and i think the fact that special counsel mueller was able to complete his investigation is something we all should be proud of. There is other countries around the world where president s are above the law, arent challenged or questioned. I think its important that special counsel mueller was able to finish his investigation. Jon the white house would make the point he was able to finish the investigation with the essential cooperation of the white house. They didnt block anything that he wanted that he asked for. Jon you were talking about that while most of the nations attention was on the Mueller Investigation and his testimony. Yes. Yesterday we had the acting Legal Advisor from the state department and one of the senior members of the state department testify in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about what is the Legal Authority on which the president might rely if he chose to begin a war with iran . I think its clear that if iran attacks american troops, kills american troops in the region, the president has the authority under the constitution to defend our armed forces in his role as commanderinchief. What we were debating was the 2001 authorization for the use of military force. Not one of the currentlyserved senators on our committee voted for that authorization in the senate. A few did in the house. But there are i think 80 of us serving in the senate who were not here and did not vote for the 2001 aumf. It was 19 years ago. What we are trying to do is come up with a modernized, relevant, current authorization for force. I think it was a vigorous and important discussion about what kinds of authorities the president and the executive branch needs to detain folks here or overseas and what sort of authority there needs to be for our ongoing conflicts in afghanistan, iraq, syria and elsewhere. I dont think it authorizes the president to star a war with iran and we need to have that discussion. Jon weve seen them shoot down an american drone. What about if they were to seize a tanker like they did with the british another important step by iran to demonstrate their aggression. Iran is a sponsor of terrorism and destabilizing force in the region. At what point should we take either diplomatic or military action against iran . I think its important there be lines of communication open between us and the iranians so that some rogue element doesnt draw us into a hot war we arent fully prepared for. How can a meeting that took place the day before and the day after trump tower, how can those meetings be outside your purchase purview but the trump tower be in your purview. What do you think . I actually think its just coincidental. There are a number of things going on in south korea right now. Certainly in regards to both the United States and north korea since trumps visit to the dmz. I think we have to look at this in the bigger context and not just in the last three weeks. In the last several decades. This Missile Launch should have taken nobody by surprise. We should never have expected the negotiations would be simple or straight forward and theyve done this plenty of times. Theyll make it look like theyre going down one path. What would you advocate . Well, what we need to do is keep on going down the path the president has already set out. They hurt north korea and they arent going to be relieved until we start moving down the road to negotiations in process. They want to go stepbystep. Thats a great path to go down. Those steps mean they have to give steps as well. Firing these missiles isnt helping their cause. Jon they have been personally insulting john bolton who the president sends over there. Thats not diplomacy at its finest. No one will accuse north korea as being good diplomats. Theyre pressing for their issues. We need to continue down the path. Anything we can do to lower tensions is good for our allies and own security and we need to keep going down that path but understand were still in the dominant position. Jon gordon chang noted the missiles are considered first Strike Missiles and capable of carrying nuclear weapons. That has to catch the attention of the people of the pentagon. Well, there is nothing new about them. Theyve had these missiles for a long time and the ability to launch missiles since 2006 when we knew they had nuclear capabilities. This doesnt represent anything new and shouldnt alarm us. As long as we maintain our normal military posture, deterring whats going on over there. We have nothing else to worry about. Sandra a federal judge blocking President Trumps new restrictions on Asylum Seekers hours after a district judge in washington ruled in favor of the administrations new policy. William la jeunesse is live in los angeles with more on that. William. Sandra, there is definitely a conflict. For now the injunction stands meaning no matter how many countries a migrant passes through before reaching the u. S. , tens of thousands can still claim asylum here. The second ruling from the same judge in San Francisco that stopped the administration from imposing rules designed to stop asylum fraud and discourage asylum or country shopping by requiring migrants to claim and be denied asylum in other countries before they reach the u. S. Appointed by president obama months ago the judge said the u. S. Could not deny asylum to those who cross the border illegally. Supreme court upheld that ruling. Yesterday the aclu praised his latest injunction. Congress made clear even with a formal agreement is not valid to deny someone asylum unless that other country is a safe place to provide for asylum and provide a fair and full procedure. We dont think mexico and guatemala can handle that. Another federal judge in washington appointed by President Trump came to the opposite conclusion which let the policy stand pending appeal. In a statement at the time the administration called it a victory for americans concerned about the crisis at our southern border. The court properly rejected the attempt of a few special Interest Groups to block a rule that discourages abuse of our asylum system. The injunction means the u. S. Must still consider asylum claims from anyone regardless of how many countries they travel through to get here and regardless of how they cross the border. That was not accomplished. It was a failure if they wanted people to watch that movie. I think that there are democrats who say there are serious things inside this report. There are republicans who look at the russia side and say we have to do something to protect our election system. But overall there was not this ah ha moment questioned. I think an important part of muellers testimony was that he detailed a number of ways in which the president and his senior team attempted to interfere with the investigation. I dont believe it was a hoax or witch hunt. I think it was an important and appropriate investigation and i think the fact that special counsel mueller was able to complete his investigation is something we all should be proud of. Sandra which still puts into question how democrats plan to proceed in the wake of those hearings yesterday. Here is a headline in the Washington Post on democrats focus for 2020. This morning democrats are now left with one option to end trumps presidency, the 2020 election. I think that was true before yesterday. I think its more true today. After those two hearings. It just did not go i think as they planned. Remember, democrats had mock hearings. They had people standing in for bob mueller doing questions and answers. They had somebody making believe that they were jim jordan. There was all kinds of practice and getting ready for this moment. It turned out to not be the moment that i think the democrats really wanted to see. Congressman ratcliffe was on special report last night. His big star moment was pointing out that the standard by which mueller says on obstruction of justice that on the exoneration, doesnt exist. And he went down that road pretty effectively at the hearing. Sandra want to finish with this. New fox news polling out, bret shining a bright light on President Trumps handling of the economy and how americans are pleased with that. Want to also show this. When those polled were asked about feelings President Trumps tweets about four democratic congresswomen, whether he crossed the line. 63 said yes. 27 said it was an acceptable political attack. This is just ahead of nancy pelosi and alexandria ocasiocortez meeting facetoface. But very interesting to see that response in that latest fox news polling to some of the president s recent tweeting on the socalled squad. That poll and question tracks other questions in other polls. It is upside down. Thats not the particular question that the president seems to focus on in this fox news poll. He is more into the economy and the overall approval at 52 which he says should be 100 with the way the economy is going. Arrest warents are issued for the two teenagers. What more can you tell us . Yesterday we secured arrest warrants for the two men last seen in Northern Manitoba on monday night. That would have been july 22nd. And we here in canada along with the police and partners and asking canadians to help us locate them recognizing as the days go by it becomes a little more difficult. We are doing our best and were asking canadians and americans alike to keep their eyes peeled for the men with hopes of a successful resolution soon. Sandra what do we know about the third victim now . Weve spoken to the American Woman, her australian boyfriend, weve spoken to the american family, the brother and the mother were on this program a couple of days ago. But this man leonard dyke, 64 years old, resident of vancouver. What more can you tell us about him . He was an occasional professor at a university here in vancouver, the university of British Columbia and a known botanist. He was traveling in the area when he met kam and breyer, the details around which are still under investigation and we need to speak to kam and breyer to determine why this has happened to mr. Highly unusual here in British Columbia for us to have two young men who were from the west coast, the very west coast and were unknown to us until such time that they were reported missing to us and that was on the latter part around the 15th of july they were reported missing as they hadnt been in contact with their family. Reported missing to us and the monday or that previous monday we had received the saddening news about lucas and chynnas death and then we discovered mr. Dykes body in British Columbia and burned out camper and truck that kam and breyer were traveling in. We discovered that they were alive and had been seen in a Northern Community in saskatchewan on sunday night and monday night their vehicle found in Northern Manitoba. So now we are seeking everyones assistance not to approach them. We believe they are dangerous. But if they do have information or have seen cam or breyer now knowing that theyre not traveling in the vehicle that we initially thought they were. Good morning, howie. You said the hearings were something of a letdown at least from the democratic perspective. My expectations were low. The way bob mueller struggled through these hearings in part because he didnt want to answer the questions, in part because he had difficulty answering some of the questions was frustrating for both sides but the democrats thought these hearings would transform Public Opinion about the president s culpability. Mueller was a terrible leading man. Not just a shaky witness but had very little to say that was new, which was his intention from the start. Jon the headline in your oped on fox news. Ko fm, how muellers stumbling performance dashed democratic hopes for a reboot. The democratic mantra heading into yesterdays session for most americans they didnt read the book but they would watch the movie. The problem is mueller turned out to be a terrible leading man. Fumbled his lines, asking lawmakers to repeat questions. You know, not every american was watching. Could you repeat that, jon . And do you know what fusion gps is. Not everybody watched the hearings but the video is far more memorable than the report. The video from the perspective of those who really want to go after the president , the video was not good. Lots of people watched the coverage including the clips. A lot of journalists played it straight in saying it was a big setback for the pro impeachment crowd on the democratic side and mueller was basically not a very good witness. But ive been struck how some opinions hosts at msnbc have said he savaged the president and said the president could be indicted after he leaves office. He answered that question hypothetically and then corrected it. The really striking thing. Front page story the New York Times says that mueller special counsel worked shorter hours, didnt have as much stamina. Didnt lead many meetings. At 74 isnt the man he used to be. My question is if the report in the investigation knew this why did we hear about it now . Were they wary of reporting such things while they still wanted access to his office while he was still special counsel and while there was still the possibility of getting leaks . Now its like well tell you the fact he slowed up a bit as was painfully evident in that hearing. Jon democrats thought that perhaps this would boost their chances going into 2020. President trump doesnt see it that way. He says he thinks the party hurt itself as a result of those hearings. Lets talk a little bit about 2020 politics. You suggest that joe biden is running a campaign thats sort of mired in the 1990s. Well, on social media biden doesnt even say anything personal. On twitter he has sort of canned stuff written by his staff. He has done very few television interviews. After the last debate he should have been all over the airwaves. On msnbc in a friendly interviews he couldnt say what he would do differently in the next debate and declined an invitation to criticize Kamala Harriss Healthcare Plan that would abolish most private insurance. I guess yesterday biden said he will take off the gloves and go after booker and harris and wont be polite anymore.
