It follows those reports there was an informant or spy trying to get in with members of the Trump Campaign. These lawmakers want a Second Special counsel to figure out how fisa warrants were authorized to sign off on the spying of american citizens associated with the Trump Campaign. I have a copy of this letter that congressman zeldin is handing out to his colleagues to try to get them on board. Part of it says my resolution lays out the case clearly the f. B. I. And d. O. J. Cant be expected investigate themselves. Thats why the appointment of a special second counsel who can lead an unbiased investigation is essential. We need to know who was involved with doing this. How many people . Who was paid . Were they directed at people at f. B. I. To do this . How did it happen . We just need all the facts on that. They want to know how and why the clinton investigation ended and how and why the trump investigation began. Have d. O. J. Officials been receptive for calls for more oversight. Theyve made some accommodations to members of congress when they agreed to let certain members of congress and the white house chief of staff john kelly look at some classified materials related to the russia probe. That move did come after President Trump demanded that they do that. And that has some democrats on capitol hill really upset. The department of justice is required to follow the law, not the political bidding of the president particularly when they are investigating him. This morning most of the talk here on capitol hill has shifted away from possibly firing the Current Special counsel to possibly hiring a second one. Sandra. Peter doocy, thank you. As we mentioned breaking news on President Trumps claim that an f. B. I. Informant was used to spy as he put it on his 2016 campaign. Now former trump Foreign Policy advisor is speaking out saying that informant did meet with him. Clovis calls the f. B. I. Actions very dangerous and nefarious and predicts there will be congressional hearings that will be bad for the Obama Administration. The president all over the news that an f. B. I. Informant was in contact with members of his campaign. A way for the president to further undermine the premise of the entire russia investigation and give him more ammunition the whole thing was politically motivated and making sure the committees get access to all the documents they are looking for calling in Rod Rosenstein, the Deputy Attorney general there that you see on the right. Christopher wray the director of the f. B. I. To the oval office yesterday. In a statement to Sarah Huckabee sanders saying they asked the Inspector General to include any irregularities with the f. B. I. Or department of justice tactics concerning the Trump Campaign and agreed the white house chief of staff john kelly will immediately set up a meeting with the f. B. I. , d. O. J. And dni together with congressional leaders to review highly classified and other information that they have requested. The Inspector Generals report was already completed. We were waiting for its release. We do not know at this point if they will release the report as it is now and then take on the second investigation or if they will hold the release of the report that they have ready until the new investigation is complete. Last night Martha Maccallum sat down with Vice President mike pence who said he is deeply concerned the f. B. I. May have been actively trying to gather intelligence on a political campaign. I think it would be very troubling to millions of americans if that took place. But it is all very troubling. All very troubling to those of us that hold the f. B. I. In such high regard that there are even allegations that people were assigned to surveil or even spy on our campaign. But look, the Inspector General has the resources to get to the bottom of it. Sources i talked to this morning are concerned the d. O. J. , f. B. I. And d. N. I. Will use this meeting with kelly to stone wall further and shield more documents. But at the same time they also have cautious optimism that kelly will be able to get what the congressional investigators are looking for. I guess theyre doing the lawn. I dont think the time is right for that. Frankly, i think the Vice President is right to put faith in Michael Horowitz, the Inspector General. And i also think that there is an important principle here. It is not a good idea for congress to delegate its inspections and its probes into and its oversight of the executive to other bodies. I think that the nunes panel in the house, the intel panel plus the other panels are doing a good job of exposing what appears to be some very suspicious behavior by the f. B. I. And d. O. J. And i think that the combination of congressional inspections and the i. G. At the department of justice are probably the way to go at the moment. I can understand the frustrations of the lawmakers in congress wanting to go for the possibility of criminal investigation. The president seems to have struck a deal over this informant but there is still the details of all this and this agreement are still pretty vague. We dont know a lot about what it means. What information do you think will actually be turned over and be provided to the president and his legal team . Thats a huge question. It is almost certain that some of the information will be redacted but if there are redactions of the sort that there have been in the past, which appear to be trying to protect the f. B. I. And d. O. J. Rather than to protect sources and methods, and to protect things which really should be redacted there will be a dig stink about it. One of the points that needs to be made for a long time the d. O. J. And f. B. I. Saying they couldnt give information to congress about the informant they had but at the same time they were leaking profusely to friendly media such as the New York Times and Washington Post making sure they got nicelyspun stories about all of what their actions being fine. And it would be ridiculous if the primary body, that is to say congress, which the oversight body under the constitution, should be the only people, that the lawmakers should be the last people in town to get the information. They should be the first people to get the information. Meanwhile we wait on the i. D. Report from Michael Horowitz. What does the anticipation look like there . It is a very thick document, 300 or 400 pages. When you have that much detail it does not look very good for the d. O. J. Or for the f. B. I. Police confirm that a 16yearold male suspect is in custody in the case of the female officer killed yesterday while she was responding to a call, a burglary call. This suspect will be charged as an adult later this morning after a bail hearing. The name and charges to follow. Three additional suspects remain at large. The manhunt continuing with helicopters and dogs on the ground. The female officers name has not been released. Witnesses report hearing a gunshot and seeing a jeep run over the officer who was wounded. Authorities say theyve recovered the jeep. Cant confirm this jeep was involved in the crime. This was a suspicious vehicle that was called and this was the vehicle that our suspects were either in or fleeing from shortly after the officer was injured. Authorities not confirming that this suspect was the driver or a participant in the car but we believe it may be linked. Sandra how is the community realbertaing to this . Theyre taking it hard. It marks the 26th officer killed on the job this year. This officer would have marked four years on the force in july. Baltimore county police tell me she is the first female officer killed in the line of duty in the departments 148year history as their police chief says this is a tough time for Law Enforcement. Its terrible. Were seeing something in this country today that weve never seen before. Were seeing Police Officers assaulted. The number of officers who have died in the line of duty is up this year. Guy first. There is a lot in there. It is important to point out that if newt is right and there was all of this deep corruption at the very top of the f. B. I. To help Hillary Clinton and to hurt donald trump, Robert Mueller should get to the bottom of that and when mueller was appointed about a year ago gingrich praised him as a superb pick with impeccable credentials for honesty and professionalism. If thats not enough what we saw yesterday was the attorney general or the Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein at the behest of the president instruct the Inspector General who seems to have good credibility on both sides of the aisle to look into these issues as well. The handlings of these two investigations. There are answers we need. Legitimate questions to ask and hopefully between mueller and the i. G. Well get those answers. Sandra you go back to the former speakers word. Corruption so deep at the top of the f. B. I. They thought they could get away with anything. Newt gingrich is playing a political game here. He has no evidence to support these really outrageous claims he is making. Yes, there are questions that need to be asked about all these investigations but the kind of words he is using designed to make donald trump happy and to put in the publics mind some doubt about the legitimacy of the russia investigation. He is playing a political game period. Thats all there is to it. I dont think there is any evidence that weve seen to back up the idea that there was that level of corruption at all. Sandra you say there are reasonable questions to be asked. Former attorney general eric holder, guy, yesterday urging the d. O. J. And f. B. I. To simply say no to the president s demand for an expanded investigation into these claims. Look, eric holder presided over one of the most politicized Justice Departments in u. S. History and repeatedly demonstrated his own deep contempt for accountability. So i dont put much stock in what eric holder has to say. I think his advice is bad and i that i rosenstein and wray and others have already rejected it. Sandra we have this tweet up there a second ago more d. O. J. Norms being eroded. Trump a subject of the investigation once accessed his congressional supporters, time for d. O. J. And f. B. I. To say no. Protect the institutions and timetested norms. Marie. Guy may not like eric holder the caution he is sounding is the correct one. The norms about what governs ongoing investigations. About how the president interacts with the department of justice especially when he is part of this investigation. He is eroding those norms and that is a problem and should be a problem for all americans. So i think that people may not love eric holder and he may not be the perfect messenger but he and many others are raising serious concerns about the way donald trump is handling an investigation that he is the subject of. That is concerning and should be concerning to everyone. It might be a norm for eric holder to withhold information from congress and defy congress and Mislead Congress and lie to congress. That might be a norm in his mind. It ought not be a norm more broadly. Sandra we know eric holder has not been shy about his criticism for this president and know his name has been floated as a possibility for a 2020 president ial candidate. That being said where does all this go, marie . Do we eventually see more truth, get more answers . Well, i think there are a couple issues here. First i would love to get more answers. First and foremost about what happened with russian interference in 2016. How we can prevent it again and all these other issues weve been talking about. I want those answers. If donald trump keeps meddling in the investigation and putting his toes further into the water we could get close to a constitutional crisis where d. O. J. Is being asked to do things that are wholely inappropriate and donald trump is trying to get very involved in an investigation that he for legal and political reasons should really keep his hands off of. Let it play out. Do not meddle in it. It will give him more credibility in the end. What the president did this week is appropriate. I think having the i. G. , the Inspector General expand that investigation to look into these explosive reports from the New York Times and elsewhere is fine. As we talk about moving forward and what to look for, i think its very important for mueller to find out exactly the extend of what russia did in the 2016 election and help prevent it in the next election. We have one coming up this year. I think thats part of the reason a number of people are suggesting it would be great to get at least that part wrapped up as soon as possible so they can implement some of the strategies to push back against russian interference that we saw last time around. Eric hawaiis kilauea volcano sending ash plumes more than a mile into the air as lava continues to carve a path of destruction and now serious safety concerns as the hot molten inches closer to a geo thermal plant. Jeff, from the gas to the lava flowing into the ocean eating up more of the land it seems like the dangers keep on stacking up. Thats right, eric. There are new concerns this morning as lava inches closer and closer to that geo e thermal plant. Many think there could be an explosion or release of toxic steam. Crews have removed thousands of gallons of flammable liquid and working to clear the rest of the property by filling wells with cold water. Lava is flowing at many of the nearby fissures at a much faster rate and one spot its getting close to a charter school.
