He continues to weigh the release of that democratic rebuttal to the controversial gop fisa memo. Bill john roberts live from the north lawn at the white house. Good morning to you. Where are we going to start today . Good morning to you. The president up early today meeting with the president of guatemala shortly before the prayer breakfast. You heard the speech there. The president will come back to the white house soon. One of the big items on his agenda is what to do about the democratic memo. Last we heard the president had not read through it himself. The white house counsels office, the National Security council continued to go through it with input from Law Enforcement at the d. O. J. And f. B. I. And the director of national intelligence. One of the big concerns at the white house and concerns that republicans and the Intelligence Community on capitol hill have is it was loaded up with references to sources and methods that will require some redactions. The chief of staff john kelly said the other day it is not as clean a memo as the one we received last week, the republican memo. And people like trey gowdy and officials here at the white house are concerned that the democrats have laid a little bit of a trap for them here. They put in things that will need to be redacted and when the memo is eventually released, that could come likely tomorrow because the president has only got five days to review this, the democrats will be able to say look, there were a lot of redactions in the memo. No redactions in the gop memo. This memo is being treated differently than the gop. The white house trying to figure its way around that as well. Bill a top aide in the west wing has resigned. Whats the story . This was something that hit yesterday. Rob porter is the staff second, probably a person that hardly anybody has heard about but he is a very important player here at the white house. He is the coordinator for policy. He also vets all of the information that makes its way to the president s desk. He may be leaving the white house as soon as today after resigning yesterday over allegations from his two ex wives he was verbally and physically abusive toward them. One of the women, his first wife, alleges that porter punched her in the face while they were on vacation in italy. She provided fox news with photographs that clearly show her with a black eye. She told me late last night was immediately after the incident and then the other pictures that show her with the blackening eye were taken a little while later. In a Statement Read by the press secretary yesterday porter denied all of the allegations against him. Listen here. These outrageous allegations are simply false. I took the photos given to the media nearly 15 years ago and the reality behind him is nowhere close to what is being described. I have been transparent and truthful but i will not further engage publicly with a smear campaign. Sources say the allegations about porter were known by a small group of individuals at the white house for a number of months. The f. B. I. Had interviewed both his ex wives for his permanent security clearance that he never received. He was handling a lot of top secret documents. The chatter about his past increased in recent weeks when porter broke up with his girlfriend samantha dravis. And started she was an attorney at the epa and started dating the White House Communications director hope hicks. Chief of staff john kelly was one of the people who knew about it for some time. In a statement earlier this week that hope Hicks Rob Porter is a man of true integrity and honor and he is a friend, and trusted professional im proud to serve alongside him. Late yesterday after those photos of the exwife with the black eye surfaced kelly did an about face releasing a statement different in tone than the one he released earlier this week saying i was shocked by the new allegations released today against rob porter. There is no place for Domestic Violence in our society. I stand by my previous comments of the rob porter i have come to know since becoming chief of staff and believe every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation. I accepted his resignation earlier today and ensure a swift and orderly transition. Some questions that are lingering, though, that is when did white house officials become aware of the serious allegations against porter . What was the level of detail that they received from the f. B. I. After speaking with his two exwives and the issue what did rob porter Tell White House officials as well . What is his side of the story . Go tell people in the military the maintenance backlog is a mile long, 68 of the f18s in the navy cant fly because we dont have the spare parts. Tell that to the men and women who have done multiple tours because we dont have enough soldiers in the army. I like jim jordan. He is a great guy. The freedom is not free, the Freedom Caucus is a good group of conservatives but freedom is not delivered by anybody on capitol hill. It is delivered by the men and women who have been at war for the last 17 years all over the world who need more help, not less from congress. It means you are putting the military behind the 8 ball again and they have less resources to do their job with and their families suffer longer. She said she will not support this. How do you plan to get this through . We are going to get it through because most people are going to listen to general mattis. To my fiscal conservatives friends you know defense spending doesnt drive the debt. Its the mandatory spending, medicare, social security. Interest on the debt. Reform entitlements. To nancy pelosi i will put my credentials up against anyone including you when it comes to immigration reform. You need to understand our military is in a state of disrepair. Weve suffered since 2011 and were at war and need to the dreamers are important but nobody is more important to me than the men and women who are fighting this war. At the time he made that statement the lead agents in the Hillary Clinton email investigation had sent hundreds of texts expressing his political opinions and desire to influence the outcome. Beyond that we know that the president was aware to some extent and that the f. B. I. Had gone to Great Lengths to conceal his knowledge about this Hillary Clinton email investigation. A month after that clip that you just played there, bill, the f. B. I. Director in his own words wrote an exoneration memo citing his concern for the fact that Hillary Clinton was communicating on that unsecured server with the president. It deleted the word president and put in another senior Government Official and other revisions took it out all together. The f. B. I. Wanted to conceal the president s involvement with this matter. As i read it i saw nothing in there that rebutted any of the main points or any of the points we made. I think its important to get it out there. What the democrats did do, again from my reading of it. It appear there was some references to sources in there and if the f. B. I. Wants that taken out, fine. I think any initial Security Issues or any sources and methods issues, they can be redacted without changing the substance of the democratic memo. Again, if the f. B. I. Determines that no redactions are necessary thats fine with me. I want their memo out there. Sandra having read it, why . Whats in there that leads you to say that is so important for us to see this . Only because so the American People can make a comparison between the republican and democratic memo. They were attacking the nunes memo for so long. It came out and they said they would have their memo to rebut it. I want it out there so the American People can make a fair decision. Im confident at the end that people will see how important and significant the republican memo was, why the majority felt we had to put it out there, and im willing to stand or fall on that. Sandra trey gowdy has suggested that somehow democrats may have laid a trap for the president overloaded it with classified information so that the president has to redact so much that it looks like they are muzzling the democrats or lead him to not release it at all. Fox news has obtained this Counter Terrorism report given to the u. N. Security council on al qaeda which says as isis weakens, al qaeda is still going strong. In fact, the report says al qaeda is, quote, remarkably resilient and is actually stronger than isis in several regions of the world including yemen and somalia. There are three major affiliates of al qaeda we have to Pay Attention to. Aqap based in yemen. Despite military pressure it remains the propaganda hub of the terror organization. The front remains one of the strongest and largest in al qaeda. The report says that group is recruiting more fighters in syria as other groups like isis suffer major losses in that country. And the all shab ab is strong in somalia and east africa. That affiliate has tried to make inroads this past year in kenya, ethiopia and as well as sandra it says the threat from isis is evolving. It says as isis has lost 97 of its territory in iraq and syria this group is for the first time showing a willingness to Work Together with al qaeda.
