Gun fight investigators say and there maybe other suspects at large. In fact they believe there are. Chilling video. The carnage in baton rouge on sunday morning. Witnesses woke and were shocked to see what they saw on the streets. He was in all black, he was in black shorts, black shirt and he had a mask on and the gun in his hand. The way he was moving you would know that this was a pedestrian running with a rifle in his hand more than someone with trained skills to move in that way with a rifle. So the same. On the street acting out. Will carr is on the ground in baton rouge. Will . It is about an hour we are expecting a press conference where we hope to get more details. This continues to be a fluid situation. Were in the department of Public Safety here in baton rouge. Coming in here, there was a Massive Police presence. They had the road blocked. Officers with long gun bulletproof vests. Theres a sense of the fear of the unknown with this potentially one to two suspects still on the run. Right now, we dont have much description of those potential suspects. We know that officers shot and killed one suspect. Three Police Officers were shot and killed this morning around 9 00 a. M. Here in baton rouge. Three others were injured. Feel free to correct me, but i believe when we were driving over here i heard the mayor come out and say at least one of these suspects he believed was from out of town, which would coincide throughout the course of the week i have been in touch with the superintendent of the Louisiana State police. He told me it was their belief if there was any problem that went on in baton rouge it would come from outside of the city. They would come in here and try to create some type of turmoil. Right now, it really seems like there is a tense situation thats continuing to play out. We hope to get some answers here, but from the officers we have spoken with today, they feel they have an x on their back and they are not sure what the rest of the day holds. Expecting governor edwards and who else that we know of . The Baton Rouge Police chief most likely the superintendent of the Louisiana State police. They have been here all week. Detailing, giving the media information. We were in this room on wednesday when you may have remembered they came out and said they discovered a plot by four people who broke in to a local pawnshop and stole eight handguns. It was their goal, according to one suspect, to go and shoot Police Officers across this area. So once again, we are back in the room. Far more tragic details playing out today and of course we will bring it to you live in an hour. We look forward to that. Thank you. We will go there. Of course as soon as that gets underway. We are learning federal agents are on the scene in baton rouge. Chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Harris is live in washington. What do we know about what has been mobilized here. Good afternoon. A u. S. Government official briefed on the intelligence is coming out telling fox news there is one shooter with an artype weapon and wearing body armor, on foot or firing from a vehicle. If verified it would show significant premeditation and also help explain the high number of casualties. This individual said they are working with these three scenarios, one there was a crime in progress, the Police Responded and they became targets of opportunity. Second, that they were on more of a routine patrol and they were targeted, and the third, which is the view of the mayor in baton rouge, just speaking with shepherd, it was an ambush. That a shooting or some criminal act was staged to draw police in and fire upon them. This official confirms that locally they are working with a piece of intelligence that one of the shooters had an artype weapon, body armor and was on foot or in a vehicle. Back in washington we have seen the statement from the president. Whos being briefed . Whos in the circle in terms of that . It is a familiar pattern in washington now. The president is has been briefed. Hes getting regular updates. This is true for this Homeland Security secretary. In this case there is an Intelligence Fusion Center in baton rouge. This is one of the entities stood up after 9 11 to help coordinate intelligence among the local, state and federal agencies. Fbi, atf, and Homeland Security investigations. Fortunately, if that is the right word to use here, they have been mobilized, directed to assist in any way possible. The atf, for example, is on scene with their dogs and their special Response Teams trying to identify how many weapons were used, the type of weapons used and who owns and whether these were stolen weapons in the commission of these shootings. Obviously awful day for the people of baton rouge, louisiana, indeed our country. Another senseless tragedy here at home. Do you have information. I talked to Law Enforcement today. I noticed the press conference with the governor. I dont have additional details. But i happened to be near that area this morning and did see the police cars all of a sudden rush toward that area. I saw where by our lady of the lake hospital where all of a sudden you have a beefed up police presence, the long guns were out where the Police Officers were taken out in the shooting. It is time across party lines to condemn this insanity and violence. We have to come together and say all lives matter. Doesnt matter what color you are, black, white, brown, red, all lives matter. We have to protect. You know the phrase you used is one that is seen by many as derogatory, right . I wonder why you use that phrase when theres a certain segment of the population that believes it is a real dig on them. Its not meant to be. We have to move beyond race. These Police Officers are men and women that run toward danger not away from it so we can be safe. It is time for us to be unified as a country. We have to look beyond race. Thats one of the dumbest ways for us to divide people, one of the dumbest ways for us to classify or categorize people. We shouldnt be divided. These are Police Officers. They dont care if you are black or white. They run toward danger to protect you. Thats their duty. Thats what they do for us. These are heros. Sounds like two Different Things to me, governor. We had an incident involving a black suspect shot and killed, but this is, according to the mayor of baton rouge, this is ambush of Law Enforcement officers, sending shock waves across the nation at this moment having nothing to do with anything except innocent officers on patrol and shot dead in baton rouge. Sgll thats right. We saw the senseless shooting in dallas of five Police Officers there. Senseless murder, five officers there. My point is we have to value all human life and we have to support our Police Officers. We have to say these are heros, men and women sworn to protect our community and every day their jobs are a dangerous one. Unfortunately, we were reminded be that today in baton rouge. We must not forget the Police Officers are there to protect and serve us and thats what they do every day. Thats the point im trying to make. I dont think it is a time to politicize and point fingers, we need to be united, not divided. We need to support and protect our Police Officers. This shouldnt be happening in america. These arent the incidents that should be happening in our country. The kind of thing that you see in third world countries. Our Police Officers are heros. Im simply saying it is time for us to be united, not divided. A time to support them and to do it across im hearing nothing but universal condemnation on here and not hearing anyone with any good ideas about how to stop what appears to be an escalation in tension. It is one thing to say it. We have been saying we need to be united for a long time. We have not done a good job getting there. I wonder if you think there are answers, though complicated, to try to dial this back, to ratchet this back somebody it is becoming untenable. I will tells you what my pastor said to us. We were in church this weekend and my pastor is africanamerican and the son of a Police Officer and across the diocese our bishop called for prayer and fasting this week for people. And to be unified. The pastor from the pulpit said, look, it doesnt matter what sacrifice you want to make this week but this is before the shootings, before we knew about the tragedy saying it is time to fast, pray, read scripture, everyone can choose to do it in their own way. But we need to come together, even though different from us. Now, look, you have asked what we could do we will find out about the shooter, their accomplice and motives, but it would be a good time for all of us across whatever party line to say we support the police, honor what they do for us. It would be a great time for us to say we love each other. Were not going to let people divide us by race and color. We are all united and were all sons and daughters of god and created in his image. Today is a day where many many baton rouge were going to church and heard about these horrific shootings. It is a good time to remember we are made in his image and what units us is im saying we shouldnt be divide. Too Much Division in our country and too many trying to exploit it for their own purposes or d ideology and it is time to put it aside. Governor, why do you say that . Certainly, given that is the case because every life matters on every level but that is a very, very divisive phrase that a lot of people hear and become really upset about it. And why do you keep using it . They shouldnt be. But they are. Thats what we have to move beyond. People want to divide us by race and you shouldnt let them do that. Of course that is true. If it is true why are we afraid of saying every life is precious in gods eyes. The semantics in this are so unhelpful. We talk about uniting but dont really do it. Three more Police Families will go through life without a parent and because of a senseless killing of three heros running toward violence to protect people. We are currently in the atmosphere of this country where we have a racial divide we havent seen since the 60s when groups like black lives matter get validation everywhere from the president on down on it creates an atmosphere where people think they can go out and kill Police Officers and Police Officers hesitate when they need to make splitsecond decisions because of the fact that everything is being videotaped and everything is being second guessed. So it is a terrible atmosphere and my hearts go out to those families. Since you mentioned the president , led me read a bit of his statement today. We havent seen him speak publicly but he put out a statement and part of the statement says theres no i want to be clear theres no justification for violence against Law Enforcement, none. These attacks are the work of cowards that speak no one they right no wrongs, advance no causes, the officers in baton rouge and dallas, they were our fellow americans, part of our community, part of our country with people who loved and needed them and who need us now, all of us, to be at our best. Your reactions to the statements from the president. It is time he start to talk about it but a little late. He also said he we have a Police Problem in our country and said that black lives matter is a legitimate movement when i know it is based on a false premise. If black lives matter to the black lives Matter Movement look at the 90 of americans murdered by other blacks when the number of black americans killed by Police Officers is very, very small, not that im denigrating any loss of life, but the fact is, we have created an atmosphere in this country that says you have to be afraid of police. Especially if you are a person of color and that could not be further from the truth. The president also said in dallas at funerals there, none of us is entirely innocent than includes Police Departments. That would seem to underline some of what your obvious concerns are, commissioner. Certainly at a funeral is not a time to make a political statement and i think that is what he was doing. There are five heros who were murdered wantenly by people that support the movements like black lives matter or people like al sharpton who create hysteria when if you look at the numbers and the facts, there are very few blacks killed by Police Officers and in many of those cases there are extenuating circumstances. I think of ferguson and Michael Brown where everybody was Walking Around with their hands up saying he was killed with his hands up. The fbi and the grand jury in missouri came up with the fact that he was trying to wrestle the gun away from the officer when he was killed but yet everybody was marching around creating violence based on a false premise. It has to stuff we have to stop talking at each other and Start Talking to each other. When a black parent tells a young person how to react to police, it shouldnt be based on the fact that they think police will shoot that person, based on the fact that police are there to help you and you need to be respectful. It is perfectly legal to carry a firearm in the street. That raised concerns because we expect po protests the next week at the convention. In the aftermath of the shooting in baton rouge, the head of the Cleveland Police union appeal to governor kasich in columbus saying, lets suspend the open carry law, if we are going to have major demonstrations and we have seen violence at antitrump demonstrations across the country this year, it doesnt make sense to have people carrying guns. The Governors Office responded and said they cant suspend that law unilaterally. Its a law. The governor doesnt have a right to suspend it. As we head to the convention tomorrow, the open carry law here in cleveland continues. That seems to be a tinderbox, the idea of protests. We expect serious protests. I can tell you security here is the toughest, the strictest i have ever seen at a National Convention and now an open carry law as well. This open carry law, have your law and do what you do but to have an open carry law and say you cant carry here, cant bring it to the Republican National convention would make sense to me but it seems due policetous, doesnt it . The catch frass is a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with the guns and if that is your line of thinking, something warped there, isnt it . I suppose the idea is, and there are levels of ring, securities of security. In the strictest area around the q, quicken loans arena there are no guns allowed in the arena or close around it. But as you get further away they will allow the law of the land here in ohio to continue. Theres another aspect of this, of course, the political aspect. It was in december that donald trump called for his ban on all foreign muslims coming in to this country. That was a week after San Bernardino where 14 people were killed by those two terrorists. A lot of us thought, boy, thats controversial. As we found at the exit polls during the republican primaries, in fact, people overwhelmingly supported that idea. So donald trump, you can say, well, its just a phrase. Not a lot of meat on the bones, certainly what democrats are saying but for him to stake out the claim, the brand as the law and order candidate as we continue to see the shootings and now what seems to be, you know, an under declared war in some small sectors of the country between police and Africanamerican Community thats wrong, let me restate bad actors in the Africanamerican Community it will strike a chord with the American People. I dont want to hear we cant do it because were doing it in a sixblock radius of the hard zone. That implies the delegates lives are more important than the Police Officers lives and folks outside of the gate. We dont want to divert limited resources we have by watching good god, fearing lawabiding citizens this have an open carry, thats going to draw our attention in this tragic world were living in right now. We want to have all of our resources looking for the truly bad people that are going to come out here. Whats the mood among Police Officers here in cleveland right now. Are they worried . They are worried. They are heart broken. We feel we are out here on a limb by ourselves. Were looking for leadership, whether at the state level through governor kasich and if he cant do it legally he can help us do it. You make a great point. Why can they legally suspend it within the perimeter of the convention zone, which we know they have already done. You cant carry an opencarry any sort of gun in to that zone and yet when you go outside of that perimeter he says, lets put his statement on the screen as we wait for the News Conference to get underway. He says Law Enforcement is a noble essential calling a enwe all grieve that officers weve again seen attacks on officers. Everyone has an Important Role to play. Thats a wellwritten political statement. Theres no basis in reality. The governor could easily declare a state of emergency and act with executive powers according to our attorneys. Were just asking for help. Im not an attorney. I dont know what the law is. If the governor is not willing to do it he should be willing to help us do it because we know it is done at a federal level in the sixblock radius of the hard zone. The delegates are no more important than the women and member protesters and supporters outside of the security of the hard zone. Were asking him to do the right thing and asking for help. We desperately in this country we need leadership that will step up and help and put this down. This notion that Police Officers are the enemy is absolutely insane to me. Whats going on right now think of what is going on right now. It is based on a policeinvolved shooting in baton rouge, louisiana. Fourtime convict felon with a gun in his pocket fighting with the police. It is a false narrative that black lives matter and the new black panther they were here threatening to kill us last night when they were marching on the Third District in the city of cleveland. You cant go freedom of speech is one thing but you cannot go in to a theater and cre and scream fire. If you are going in to a crowd of people and saying kill the police, influential people and president of the United States, it was mind boggling to me he made the statements he did, one day, one day after the Police Involved shootings, before one minute of investigation was done. Very divisive. When a credible person like that is making statements like that, it validates the falsity that the black lives matter folks have out there. We all want the same thing. We want everyone at the end of the day to go home safely, supporters, protesters, Police Officers, people here to see whats going on and we cant do that without the help of our leadership. Violence is violence is what comes to my mind. As you say, everybody wakes up in the morning wanting to go home at the end of the day. Sure. The president is going to speak at 4 30. Heres a little statement he has already released, which gives us a suggestion of where he is going here with this statement. Let me read that to you and get your thoughts on it. We may not know the motive for the attacks, talking about baton rouge, but i want to be clear there is no justification for violence against Law Enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards that speak for no one, they right no wrongs, they advance no causes. I wish thats what he was saying a day after the policeinvolved shootings in minnesota and a day after the Police Involved shootings in baton rouge. That would have gone a long way. The divisive things he said in minnesota that sparked the murders of Police Officers. These are not you can not compare policeinvolved shooting Police Officers going out and doing their job and defending their lives to the absolute murder setting up and murdering of the dallas Police Officers here in baton rouge. I find it curious the president all of a sudden wants to wait and see what the motivations were. He didnt want to wait and see what the motivations were when he was making divisive statements. After ferguson, one of the lessons i think everyone took away the federal government investigated and what they found, and what there was no doubt was a thorough investigation is what the circumstances were not what people thought they were. There is not a hands up, dont shoot moment. Yet you hear that chanted at these protests. It does seem that it is incumbent on the president to say whenever something happens, whether it is an officer gunned down, a person who is gunned down in the line of duty, we need to all take a breath and investigate and figure out exactly what has happened here. All of that being said i looked at a piece written by senator scott, an africanamerican senator from south carolina, who is a republican. He said, you know, he feels we need to not ignore the struggle and the feeling that some black people feel they are pulled over often. He said his brother was once pulled over and they said they thought he had stolen a dare because he was driving a volvo. Whats your reaction from senator scott . I agree. If theres legitimate issues out there, they need to be addressed, but all of the issues need to be addressed. The president clearly said that africanamerican males 15 to 35 are 3 1 2 times more likely to be approached by Police Officers, but what he didnt tell you is that they are approached because of the crime rates in the africanamerican communities. Im not calling anybody a name here. Thats a reality. Homicide rates, the blackonblack crime is off the charts in this country right now and those are real issues we all need to address and embrace and get theres statistics. Life is life. Life is life. When you think of what happened in the inner cities and look at the homicide rates climbing and think of the children, People Killed in gun fire. Unbelievable. And you wonder where the march is for those people. Those innocent lives, as well. We need to take a good, hard look at what is going on. We can do it. Listen, theres not one neighborhood in the city of cleveland and i would bet you my life there is not one neighborhood in this country that the vast majority of the people, blue, black, green, purple, pink, i dont care what color they are have good godfearing, lawabiding citizens. I have been a Police Officer for and never said what color is the family calling for help and i have never gone to assignments and had somebody size me up and say send me a black cop. We dont have that reporting at this moment. Im a physician and im on staff at the hospital where the officers were taken. I received a Public Information notice that one officer is in stable condition and the other in critical. Aside from that, what i know is what you know. There have been warnings beginning with the knockoff of the pawnshop the other day. First, lets just say the police have been on the one hand protecting the constitutional right that folks have to protest peacefully. At the same time aware there are those that wish to harm them. Some said it is not true and looked on those police and body armor as overreacting. We now know the police were right. They live with a tension we never live with, protecting the rights of others, putting their own life at risk. We see that evidence here. This could have been brewing for a week, a week and a half, i assume it is related to the alton sterling shooting and we will understand more Going Forward. Do you have any big picture thought on what we can do to ensure the safety of the men and women who serve and protect us . Well, first, people should stop should not speak negatively about the police. Whoever you are, if you have a casual comment negative on someone in Law Enforcement, stop, think. There might be someone who is not balanced, if they hear your criticism it may tip them over. We have to recognize Law Enforcement is that line between us and anarchy. We need to support them however we can. Not just the families of the folks who have fallen but all Law Enforcement wherever they are. Thank you. Thank you. As we wait for the governor, governor edwards, as you say, of louisiana, we have new information on the investigation from him. On the right side of the screen, you can see the scene from the awful situation that unfolded this morning. Three Police Officers gunned down. Early reports there was gun fire in the area and they were called to it. It has been described as an ambush. Perhaps all of that was something designed to draw them to the scene. Of course they went toward the action where they thought and lost their lives. We know on a prnal level it is a devastating day for these families. We have heard from individuals who were at the hospital trying to console these families. A young daughter saying she knew her daddy was coming home a wife who expressed the same sentiment and the sad reality that is not the case for these families. Once again, dallas feels like it was a moment ago, needs support. But the reality of death and the stories we seem to here pretty much every 15 minutes across the nation and the world certainly weigh on everything that is the business of cleveland and the business of philadelphia in the weeks to come. It casts a pull on the decisions of voters as they try to figure out which way the country should go and what direction we should take. We do know that president obama will speak at 4 30. The statement he put out today is perhaps one of the strongest we have seen from him. He said i want to be clear, theres no justification for violence against Law Enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards that for no one, they right no wrongs advance no causes. This officers in baton rouge and dallas they were our fellow americans, part of our community and country. People who loved and needed them and who need us now, all of us, to be at our best. Those words from the president and he will speak at 4 30 this afternoon. It is a volatile situation. One in which everybody has to take a deep breath and see how it unfolds. Martha, where the young black man was shot a is the beginning of the crisis. The protesters have gone away out of respect for the officers and were told at the request of the store owner. Those protests have died down and there are calls for these protests to calm for the moment while authorities work to figure out what happened here. The full force of the the pd, they are bringing in expatrols extra patrols. A couple of minutes from now, and then we will hear from the president. We know the basic circumstances surrounding this. It was before 9 00 a. M. Around 8 30 a. M. Today central time. Officers got a phone call to dispatch saying theres someone with a gun on airline highway, which is like a main drag through town. Someone looking suspicious and carrying a gun. Authorities were responding to that. When they arrived they found not that but a hail of gun fire. Three officers bodies found at the be quick Convenient Store at airline highway. Not far from the Police Department itself. Next door, there was fire and then return fire and we believe authorities were able to incapacitate, in fact kill the suspect. Almost immediately, the authorities came out and said, we believe there are more. They originally gave us the understanding that the officers were there. They saw bullets coming from all different directions. Of course we keep reminding of dallas and how it was the echo of the building, only one shooter, but authorities in the early going, we have to rely on the word of the authorities. Its the authorities who said they believe there are two 0 accomplices and they believe it was a group of three all together. One having died. A conspiracy here to attack Police Officers. The other two they asked the public to be on the lookout, for people dressed in black or camo. They had a mask before but theres no reason to believe they would keep the mask on. If you see something, Say Something and talk to police immediately. They are concerned about the possibility of two other suspects. Sometimes the reporting from Law Enforcement changes, but as of this moment, the Law Enforcement indication to us is they believe more suspects are out there and wants anyone who knows anything about them to call police. There is not a lot of description to give. We have not been given a height, race, sex. We dont know really anything. We are lead to believe simple as the clothing they were wearing, covered head to toe. Our sources in washington describe the suspect wearing body armor, in addition to wearing a mask. And if that is indeed the general description of the person you are looking for, it doesnt help you much once they change clothes and take off the mask. We have a distinct lack of information about these suspects. The authorities told us they want to find. But no real description for how to find them. We know two people were taken in for questioning, not labelled as suspect but two taken in for questioning and once it happened, since then we have heard not one more word about those two suspects excuse me, hard not to do that, but these two other people being brought in for questioning at the Baton Rouge Police department. We saw pictures of them entering the Baton Rouge Police department but nothing of them leaving and we have no updates from authorities on those two people. Maybe during this News Conference here in just a minute we will find out who, more details about those suspects. This is the area we were talking about. This is airline highway. Right through town. You see the scene marker off of interstate 12, it says. This is right in the heart of baton rouge. The Police Department is down the street and the be quick is where the officers bodies were found. The other thing we are curious about is do they know who the dead gunman was . At last check, the last time Police Updated us, they had not approached physically the body of the suspect, the body of the dead suspect because they were they just didnt know if there would be explosives or anything else around. So often when there is an attack on police, sensing this sort of thing would happen, they are not taking chances. It looks as if we are about to hear from governor edwards now and maybe some clarity on these matters. Whos the dead suspect . What was his motivation, where was he from and who are the others if they exist. We expect a number of different people to speak. This is from the Louisiana State police here. The governor is there, as well. This could be a comprehensive News Conference followed by the president. We are hear today to give you an overview of what occurred today in baton rouge, louisiana. Today with us that will be speaking will be state Police Superintendent mike edmondson. He will give an overview of what info we have available now. Followed that is the sheriff and speak of the deputies lost today followed by Baton Rouge Police chief who will speak to his officers that we lost today, followed by u. S. Attorney walt green who will give a comment on the federal perspective, followed by remarks by mayor holden and our governor edwards. We will not be taking questions at the end. We will provide you everything that we know up to this point. So the briefing will conclude with governor edwards remarks. Thank you. First of all, thank you for being here. Im colonel ed monson supervisor of the Louisiana State police. We are getting calls around the world. We want and need your prayers. Baton rouge is in need of those prayers so we thank you for those. We appreciate every one of them going on. We are not going to take questions because it is an active, Ongoing Investigation that has a lot of moving parts right now with multiple agencies. Louisiana state police is the lead agency, with regard to the investigation itself. We will be working closely with the Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office and the Baton Rouge Police department from a local perspective. Then we will be joined from all of our federal partners as we work the many, many leads that has taken place right now. We will give you an 800 number for the public as we move forward. Let me make something clear. You are getting a lot of information and interviewing a lot of people. If it does not come from myself, the chief of police, or the sheriff, if it does not come from these individuals,er we cannot confirm it as factual. Just know that up front. We will have another press Conference Tomorrow afternoon at 1 00 p. M. Central standard time. We will give you an update. But we want to allow our detectives and our investigators the crime scene is a large crime scene. We will tell people in the baton rouge area, if you do not need to be absolutely need to be in that area of airline highway and oldham monday highway, stay out of the area. We will be working it throughout the night as we work in that specifics. There is not an active shooter scenario in baton rouge. No active scenario that involves a shooter in the city of baton rouge. We believe, based on the information we have, this is ongoing, again, we believe the person shot and killed our officers, that he is a person that was shot and killed at the scene. Thats what we know right now. We do not believe, or so we have any other shoulder held up in the baton rouge area, but understand this investigation has got a lot of moving parts and pieces. We will be moving and going on each one of those. But right now theres no active scenario shooter scenario going on in baton rouge. I will tell you this, i will read it because i want to make sure you get it accurate. Approximately 8 40 a. M. Today, several Law Enforcement officers were shot. A call came in to central dispatch at the baton rouge city Police Department saying there was a guy carrying a weapon, carrying a rifle, walking in that particular area at airline. That was the information that came in to us. Multiple officers were transported to local hospitals for treatments. Three officers that died from injury, two from the Baton Rouge Police department and one from the Sheriffs Office. One sheriffs deputy is in Critical Condition, just got out of surgery a short time ago. The sheriff and chief will speak on those. Two additional officers suffered life threat tng wounds. They are in stable condition at the hospital right now. 8 40 a. M. , baton rouge pd officers at a Convenient Store observed the individual. He was wearing all black, standing behind a Beauty Supply store holding a rifle. At 8 42 a. M. , reports received of shots fired. At 8 44 a. M. , reports received of officers down on the screen. At 8 45, reports received of more shots being fired. At 8 46 a. M. , reports received of the suspect, again, wearing all black, standing near a car wash located next to the Convenient Store. At 8 48, i ems units arrived at the scene. They were staging. Approached and got the bodies that were at the scene to render first aid. Officers engaged the suspect at that particular time and he ultimately died. We in Law Enforcement ask the public stay vigilant. We want you, if you see something that is suspicious and you know it is suspicious and out of the ordinary in your particular area, call your local Police Department. You know the number, call that number. As the colonel just stated we have had six officers shot today. Thee of which are city Police Officers, two of which are deceased, one is still alive. And the chief will speak to those individuals in a moment. We have had three sheriffs deputies shot. One deceased, 45yearold. One is in Critical Condition fighting for his life as we speak, 41yearold and one had nonlifethreatening injuries. Hes in surgery now. Hes 51 years old. Each one of these individuals married, each one of these individuals have a family. We are grieving as a Law Enforcement community. We are grieving for each other and our loss and our families. And we ask for prayers. Not only for us, but the deputies, the families and coworkers. As Law Enforcement, we are a family. We stand here together as you can see. But our number one priority is the safety of our community. The safety of the people that live here, the safety of Law Enforcement. We have activated the Louisiana Sheriffs Association task force. As you can see behind me, several of my fellow sheriffs are here. We want to assure you that we are having a coordinated effort that is Going Forward to ensure we provide the Services Necessary to protect the citizens of this parish. With gods help, we will get through this. To me, this is not so much about gun control as it is about whats in mens hearts. Until we come together as a nation, as a people, to heal as a people, if we dont do that, and this madness continues, we will surely perish as a people. So i would ask for your prayers and your support for all of the families of those who are involved here today and continue to pray for this parish, this city, this state and this nation. Its with a heavy heart that i stand here today. As the others have said we have had six officers shot today. Three of those officers would be our pd officers. Two were killed in the line of duty, one is 41 years old, and has just under a year of service. The other 32 years old with ten years of service. One lifethreatening injury nine years of service. We ask for prayers from this community for our officers, our families, for the families that have been affected by todays senseless, senseless shootings that went on this morning. Prayers for all Law Enforcement, the sheriff and colonel said we stand united and this is a united front. Make no mistake about that. It is very united. Public safety remains our priority and we will continue to do our job in the light of whats happened. We have several agencies outside that are coming in to lend support and help. Our officers have been depleted the last 12 to 14 days. Over agencies are coming to help us and back us up. Thats for this communitys safety. As the sheriff said we have activated the Sheriffs Task force. Its a coordinated effort Going Forward. We will get through this as a family. We l get through this as a community. But i want all of our pd officers to know i support you. Every single one of you i stand with you and beside you and we are going to get through this and we will get through this together. This is not going to tarnish this city or this department. Were going to move forward. Thank you. This is indeed a tragic day for the city of the baton rouge. On behalf of the attorney general of the United States and myself, i want to offer my condolences to the family as well as the officers involved in this shooting. I can promise you with the backing of the department of justice and attorney general, all federal Law Enforcement assets that are needed will be given to this investigation. We will go wherever it takes us to conclude this investigation. I will tell you that our continued support for federal, state and local Law Enforcement in this matter has been great. We have agents from the atf, fbi, as well as the United States Marshall Service and people in my Office Currently assisting with the investigation and we will continue to do so until justice is served. Thank you. Let me tell you what, this is truly a sad day in baton rouge as we now meet again behind senseless killing. We continue to ask the question and continue to make the statement let peace prevail in baton rouge and its parish. We must look ahead. The president has acknowledged this violence and will reiterate those things around 3 30 our time. But again, the people that you see here today, let me say unequivocally, the president has responded to the needs of baton rouge. Not only that the agencies you see here have always been partners with the state police, the Sheriffs Office and the city police. We are one family. All seeking justice for all of our people. So let me thank the president and the governor will elaborate on the call he got from the president but we must say we ask you now for your prayers. We also pray for those who were killed or injured today in the incident. We want you to pray for their families and be with them, not only today, but in the future. They are our first responders. Now prays for them and their families that we will be their first responders. We must strive every day to be one nation, under god, indivisible with liberty, and justice for all. And in our country. An absolutely unspeakable, han ouls attack on Law Enforcement on Law Enforcement in baton rouge claimed the lives of two Police Officers, one sheriffs deputy and injured three others, one of whom today, right now as we speak is absolutely fighting already his life. Its unjustified. It is unjustifiable. The violence, the hatred has to stop. At times like this i wish the command of the english language i have were more adequate to the task to convey the full range of emotions im feeling and to express them on behalf of the state of louisiana. Earlier today, i along with mayor holden and the Law Enforcement community here gathered with the family members of the victims at the hospital. When i tell you unspeakable tragedy, its unspeakable. These men risking their lives to protect and serve this community were taken out the way they were. They are real life, everyday heros. As you have been told by the colonel, this is an Ongoing Investigation, a lot of pieces. I want to assure we are doing Everything Possible to make sure that everyone is protected. Every resource is going to be available to be used to bring these perpetrators, if this is more than one, to justice. And that means, federal, state and local. You heard from the u. S. In baton rouge, but we are aided by the fbi and atf agencies as well. I spoke to the president of the United States as well who called to express on behalf of himself and the first lady and also the people of the United States. They are condolences, their best wishes, obviously for those injured for a full and speedy recovery and their prayers for the people here in baton rouge and around the country. We have to do better. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. The people who carried out this act, the individuals, they do not represent the people of baton rouge. Or the state of louisiana. Or whats best about our country. They dont represent the values we stand for. Obviously our community is hurting. And only through peace and unity can we heal and thats going to take constructive dialogue. There simply is no place for more violence. That doesnt help anyone. It doesnt further the conversation. It doesnt address any injustice perceived or real. It is just an injustice in and of itself. We are not going to tolerate more hate and violence, tearing apart the communities and families of louisiana. So as i did just a few days ago, im inviting the people around the country to join their prayers to mine that our nation, our community here can heal, we can get past this and certainly pray for the recovery of those officers who were injured today, but pray for all of our officers. Our officers here in baton rouge and around the state and the country and their family members. Whoever day expose themselves to great risk of harm simply so they can protect and serve as they have sworn to do. The governor from the state of louisiana imploring the hatred has to stop, the violence must stop. This is intolerable, unjustified and senseless. The Baton Rouge Police chief giving us details on those shot today within his department. Baton rouge pd, 41yearold officer with less than a year on the force shot and killed today. A 32yearold officer with ten Years Experience on the force shot and killed today. And from the baton rouge pd, another 41yearold officer who is in the hospital right now. From the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriffs Office, three shot, one killed and theres one officer who two different reports. One reported hes in surgery. One leader reported he just got out of surgery. Be it as it maze, the phrase they used was fighting for his life. Doctors are working hard to save his life on an extremely dark, unthinkable day in baton rouge, louisiana. One of the questions that was left in the open is the matter of two other suspects. This is a these arent items with have dug up and brought to you. Police believe there were two others. The mayor of baton rouge said that and others have suggested that there may have been two other suspects. The police chief was clear today, moments ago saying there is no active shooter situation now, but a matter of whether there maybe others said it is an open investigation. Yeah. Certainly lookslike a similar situation to what we saw in dallas where the initial reports were that it was two or three or four people who were involved and then it turned out to be just one. As you say they made it clear theres no ak ty shooter scenario. The person is dead is what they said at the top of the News Conference. They also gave us details that we didnt have before, which is it sounds like this individual was just walking along airline with a rifle and then of course that would lead to a phone call 2k3we9ing in to the police and they 1307bded to that call and when they got there this individual opened fire on them and they took him down. Unfortunately in the course of those events he was able to take down and kill three Police Officers and one other who is fighting for his life at this hour. It is a horrific situation. We heard from the sheriff who was poignant in his words. He said we need to come together. If this madness continues we will perish as a people. And all of them asked for prayers. Lets bring in bret bair and your reaction to this. I thought i9 was interesting, the News Conference and you mentioned the sheriff,er east Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office starting with this is not so much about gun control as it is about whats in a mans heart. What we did not hear was the motive of this man or who this person is. Maybe they dont know exactly. Or what they are looking at as far as the investigation. The most important part is what you and shep talked about there is not an active shooter situation ongoing. What we dont know and obviously in the wake of and the word i left out word is old where we saw self radicalization. And then dallas an other people out there who are deranged in one way or another with different motives. We dont know that part of it. Obviously thats a key part in this investigation. Very clear. We dont know the persons motives. We an eyewitness who the sound byte we play pd before yelling she was terrified 6 she k0u8d see this person standing there with a rifle and shooting at people dressed like a ninja with a mask on and some camo fatigues, in black, something frightening to her. You can tell by the sound of her voice. All we know so far about this person and what their motives might have been. It is tricky in this world to figure out what peoples motives are. We have people coming at individuals and killing them for all Different Reasons which we have seen over the course of the last few weeks. We are waiting for the president to come out, as well. We heard from mayor holden who specifically referenced the president. He thanked the president for his help and words of concern for baton rouge today. He also thanked Valerie Jarrett who he said called, as well. They were grateful for that response. The president put out words, which we have given to you a few times already, that are seen as the strongest response the president has had in terms of his support for Law Enforcement and a statement he made. I imagine he will echo those words when he comes out and discuss this again. Citric i can because as you say, we dont know the context of what the person was doing. We knew in dallas, the words of the shooter. I want to kill white people. I want to kill white Police Officers in particular. It doesnt appear, at least, at this point that we know anything of the sort from this one. No. I think you will hear from the president a lot of what we have heard before that this violence is unacceptable and mirroring his statement he put out which is the most aggressive as far as any violence against Police Officers is not justified. I dont think you are going to hear what that sheriff down in baton rouge said, this is not about gun control. If anything, i think we will hear what we have heard from the president about the problem of, in his eyes, guns and access to guns throughout the country. I think because we dont know and didnt hear you are not going to hear anything about motive from the president. He will let that investigation continue on its own. Resting rea havent heard fromming hillary clinton. We have heard from donald trump, the president , mike pence put out a statement. We have not seen anything on twitter or statements at all from hillary clinton. Good point. We wait for the president. A couple of minutes away to step in front of the mooin microphones. We have just got word from the white house the president will be delayed slightly, we believe. Were told he is working on his remarks at the white house and he will come toe microphone pretty quickly. It was scheduled for 3 30 central time or 4 30 eastern time to come to the News Conference. And we expect him to come shortly. But since there will be a delay we will get in a quick commercial so we dont miss the president. Ching for ways to manage my symptoms. I thought i had it covered. They went out to answer a call about a guy with a rifle. We dont know his motivation and thats something we dont have answers to. The Police Officers in baton rouge and those in charge said that they will have News Conference at 1 00 p. M. Tomorrow. Unless they learn something in the meantime, at which point they would come forward prior to that. But 1 00 tomorrow is the next piece of information we are likely to get from them. We got a statement from mike pence. Our prayers are with the victims from mike pence. No word from Hillary Clintons campaign yet. I want to bring you in from new york with thoughts on cleveland and the political side of this as well. We were listening to the tick tock of where the shooter was. We were led to believe maybe the phone call to police was a setup to get them in to a spot for an ambush. Now we realize that isnt the case. They made that clear there and the way they described this man with the gun and his movement along airline highway in baton rouge, we dont know where it came from, but we know he was walking in the general direction of the Baton Rouge Police department. He phone call came in. Officers went to the scene, which is close to the Police Department. I suppose, bret, it is entirely possible he was walking to the Police Department and instead, the police came to him. It is possible. We did not hear motive. We heard that description, we heard three officers dead and the other Critical Condition. And two others in stable condition. Interesting that with these deaths today, there have been 29 Police Officers killed in the line of duty in the u. S. This year. I expect thats what you will hear from the president as we wait for his remarks in the Briefing Room about how that is unacceptable. You have seen statements that he put out earlier. The statement he put out earlier along those lines. You have to think, he perhaps is retooling this as they dont know or they are not telling us a lot about whats behind this. They clearly dont or dont want us to know what they know yet. Im not discounting this the multiple reports, including from the mayor they are working to determine whether there were accomplices. The additional reporting, not just from reporters, television stations and newspapers but from leaders was they believe there maybe accomplices. You cant rule that out under any circumstances, but to get to motive will be an interesting thing. The president has found rocky political waters, or choppy political waters en route toward reconciliation. Many times, his political opponents and others have taken, well, taken had different of opinion with the president over the way hes handled these matters. Martha, this is a very tricky thing here. In the overall message is we have to all get along. The violence against Police Officers is insane and we cannot have this in america. One of the leaders in baton rouge was saying, our civilization, our country will fall under the weight of this sort of thing. It starts to be sort of every other day sort of occurrence, martha and it is mind numbing a enhorrifying. Really is. You hear that kind of discussion about tearing at the fabric of the nation and how do you function as a country when Law Enforcement feels they are under the gun . Especially when you are living in a world where there are so many crazy, violent things going on . You need to know the Police Officers out there have your back. Weve seen over the course of these incidents that they were running towards the action when they were gunned down. It is horrific. We have seen the president over time address each one of these issues. As a human being he must be drained by the number of times hes had to come forward and be and grieve with the families. I think one piece of this is that americans are tying these together and saying something is really wrong. Leadership is needed to have an overview perspective on where we stand as a nation and what we really need to do to come together. The president spoke to that in dallas. Theres a feeling among a lot of people that we need more in some way, shape or form. I dont know what that takes. The president has tried a number of different ways to address this. Hes tried anger, numerous times we have seen him get very passionate about shootings, in a number of different formats. He has gone in to detail about guns, specifically and how he believes getting them off the streets an preventing access in some way, shape or form is the way to address this. When you look at the baton rouge sheriff and his statement in this moment. I dont think it was political. I think he was getting to he heart of how he feels about it. That this is not about gun control, he said. He said not so much about gun control as it is about what is in a mans heart. Until we come together as a nation this madness will continue and we will perish as a people. Getting. A to b leadership is wise is something the nation will be coming to grips with in the coming days and weeks and i think it will effect the politics of the both conventions as we deal with the situation where we are. It is clearly very much on peoples minds. That word madness we have heard several times the last couple of days. People see what is going on in france and elsewhere and feel concerned. Look at the police presence, barrier and barricades over the city of cleveland right now in an effort to keep people safe here and a discussion going on between john kasich and those disagreeing whether or not they should maybe forgo the open carry law for a while during the course of the convention. There are such Big Questions right now in this nation on peoples minds. You know, we cant read rae much in to the president s delay but no doubt he is getting his comments together. You wonder what his thoughts are about how to address them. Frankly i look forward to hearing them. Today we dont know what we have. We have a guy with a gun who murdered three officers an hurt three others at a minimum. For reasons that escape us. We can see the events in recent days and weeks in baton rouge and figure this is potentially connected but it is also potentially not connected. We really dont know yet. You wonder, are we dealing with a guy who has serious mental problems, who is this person and what was this persons motivation . Thats going to matter. I wonder it will be interesting to see how the president crafts his remarks, devoid of that information. We know theres been a horrific act. We know that Police Officers have been senselessly murdered and theres zero justification for that. That seems to be the universal cry today.
