Catherine, what do you have on the breaking news about saudi arabia and other various reports . Reporter well, bill, this information comes to fox news from a intelligence official who confirmed that omar mateen traveled to saudi arabia in 2011 and 2012. One of the things the fbis doing right now is theyre building out a complete picture to nail down that timeline, and travel is a critical component, and this would be a significant piece of that puzzle. Just two hours from now the fbi director will be briefing reporters here in washington at fbi headquarters. Before that comey and nicholas rasmussen, the head of the National Counterterrorism center, will brief president obama on the status of the investigation and whether evidence points to a more direct tie between the shooter, mateen, and the foreign terrorist organization. Meantime, federal investigators are following dozens of leads and not ruling out more suspects. There is an investigation of other persons. Were working as diligently as we can on that. We have teams of prosecutors as well as teams of agents working around the clock getting search warrants, Getting Court orders. If anyone else was involved in this crime, they will be prosecuted. Reporter federal investigators are using those search warrants and court orders to gather evidence and to question individuals as they run down more than a hundred leads. The congressional source told fox news late yesterday that the fbi is combing through mateens computer and his apartment to lock down that timeline before or the attack and who he was in contact with. In that 911 call, mateen pledged allegiance to isis, and we know that he was also a follower of a gang leader turned bank robber, marcus duane robertson, who was released last year and has a history of inciting violence. Lets start on the campaign, brit. If you think about the economy and National Security, they are issues one and two in all the polling for americans today. How does this now fit into this campaign over the next five and a half months between trump and clinton . Well, it thrusts the issue of terrorism and how we deal with it into the forefront of the campaign at least for the time being and perhaps all the way to november. This is, you know, a horrible massacre, a hideous atrocity committed by someone who pledged allegiance to isis. Theres no getting around those facts, and it raises the question of which approach the kind of muscular approach that donald trump favors or the more restrained approach that president obama and secretary clinton favor, is the one that is most likely to defeat this scourge. Bill yeah. We have read many tweets from donald trump, we will hear his speech a bit later this afternoon. Put that in context. When you listened to what Hillary Clinton said earlier today on cnn. From my perspective, it matters what we do more than what we say. You know, it mattered we got bin laden, not what name we called him. And i have clearly said that we face terrorist enemies who use islam to justify slaughtering innocent people. And, you know, whether you call it radical jihaddism, radical islamism, i think they mean the same thing. Im happy to say either. Bill how different is she from the current commander in chief . Well, he wont say those things and hasnt. He comes close, but he doesnt quite say it. And there is a, there is a view held by her and by him that isis and what it does and what it stands for is really not islamic. Mr. Trump and many others feel otherwise. They think that the roots of this hatred of homosexuals that, obviously, was part of the motivation for this hideous crime, this hideous massacre are a part of this and have their roots in islamic beliefs. And, which are expressed to some extent in sharia law and that we must identify this and recognize that there is a problem within islam that gives rise to this sort of thing and that we cant pussyfoot around that notion because of our fears that if we are careless about how we characterize it, we may enflame the whole muslim world against us, and we may awaken a level of intolerance within our own country which would be a very serious, additional problem. So thats the dilemma thats faced, thats the choice. And, you know, trump and his followers come could down on on, the president and Hillary Clinton on the other. And right now, of course, the onus is on the administration and its adherents, because this is the worst terrorist attack since 9 11, and it happened on their watch. Bill i need a quick answer here. Trumps arguing that a ban on muslims, hes suggesting that this would prevent Something Like this. Thatas the suggestion in his answers earlier today, but this guy was born in new york. Hes been here 29 years, a ban on muslims would not keep him out of the United States as a refugee. Go. A ban on muslim immigration would not have stopped this guy. The argument i think hes making is, though, that for a period of time until we sort through what our proper response to all this is that a temporary ban on muslim immigrants would be a sensible and reasonable approach. I dont know how you execute that, but i dont think it can be connected as a way to stop this kind of attack from a homegrown terrorist like this guy. But i think they would also tell you theres so many individuals that theyre having to look at, to look at their backgrounds and to interview personally. Well, heather, it very well may be, but one of the things we have to remember that weve always been concerned about with organizations like isis is there are two big worries that we have. One is what they directly coordinate with individuals who may harm innocent americans, but the second one which is just as dangerous is these rogue actors who are inspired by isis and the fact that we continue to allow them to flourish and grow around the world. Thats why its important that we develop a strategy to actually defeat isis. Heather yeah. Isis state radio calling mateen one of the soldiers of the caliphate in america. Make no mistake, we could put a military operation to finally get rid of them in six months and the islam would come back. And until we muslims in this month of ramadan and atonement come to terms and look in the mirror and recognize that we have to take islam like christianity went through we have to take islam and defeat the three yo accurates that dominate our faith, theyll continue to say that the caliphate exists. Its an ideology that needs to be defeated, and isis will take credit for whatever they can in the land of war which they see the west even though they may not have planned this one. You know what the threat has been in afghanistan for 20 years. You knew what the threat was in iraq, and that was all but eliminated in sadr city in 2007. But now with assad in syria and isis in Eastern Syria and western iraq, with libya after gadhafi, look what has happened since then, nine years later. Do you believe as an american we have this on lockdown in we had this in lockdown in 2007 in sadr city . Well, bill, as long as we think this is a military problem that needs a military solution, we wont. Well continue this whackamole program. But until we start to engage a third or pathway in the middle east the assads of the world will continue to produce the isiss of the world because thats how they maintain the sympathy of the west, by letting the wahhabis allow the alqaedas to thrive, etc. We need to help the third pathway which was a movement that was the opportunity of the arab awakening. They really havent demonstrated anything that rise to the level of detaining or charging with a crime. Its an enormously difficult problem. Heather bill was talking to ambassador woolsey, and he said you can always stay out of a war if you dont mind losing. Fifteen years after 9 11, are we losing this war against radical islam . Well, weve never had a strategy to defeat radical islam despite 9 11, and that is stunning, and its harsh reality. Of and that is largely nonmilitary. Because what youre truly doing is organizing the muslim countries of the world to push back on political and religious radical islam. Thats what has to be done strategically. But there is a place for military action, to be sure. And when terrorists occupy land and they have sanctuary and safe haven, then that must be destroyed. That was the major lesson, heather, as a result of 9 11. We did not destroy that sanctuary in afghanistan that the alqaeda had despite blowing up the two embassies in africa and the attack on the cole. The result was 9 11. Isis has had a sanctuary in syria now for four years. And we have not destroyed it. Heather well, you mentioned go ahead. Heather you mentioned organizing those countries in the middle east. How do we go about doing that when we dont even appear to be organized here . Well, they beg for u. S. Leadership. Many of us talk to those leaders in the middle east, and theyre starving for the United States to get back involved with a leadership role. And its not just the middle east. Im talking about muslim countries. We dont have to come up with the answers, but we do we can provide a framework and a platform for them to determine what is the pushback politically and religiously against the radical islamist ideology. I think thats their ball game, to make that decision what that is, but we can help shape it and help organize it. But there is a time for military action, as i suggested. Both of these things must go together. Heather and what does it mean to you when isis comes out today, and they refer to mateen as a soldier of the caliphate in america . Well, lets, lets face the facts. I mean, isis is and radical islam has declared war against the United States of america. We are their number one strategic target. But our president is not at war with them. The congress of the United States is not, to be sure, and certainly not the american people. Were not going to get this thing solved, sadly and tragically, until we get a new president with new ideas on how to defeat isis, take the sanctuary away from them in syria and how to deal with the larger problem of the radical islam ideology. Heather and you believe that the current administration, you say, does lack the political will. This administration has lacked the political will to deal with this problem for seven and a half years. They have minimized this problem. We walked away from iraq. We would not help the syrian monitors to overthrow the assad regime. Thats what gave us isis. They left iraq, several hundred fighters, moved into syria and established a sanctuary. No one was going to bother them, and they grew to 40,000 strong and invaded iraq, and now theyre a problem for the swire world. Entire world. Its gotta stop. Listen, the radical islamists, the fatalities they have caused in the world five years ago were a little over 3,000. Now theyre averaging 28,000 a year.
