Democrats are trying to show there is broad support across the political spectrum to vote President Trump out of office from senator Bernie Sanders at the far left of the party all the way to former republican Governor John Kasich speaking tonight. This will be about putting on a united front. Now you might remember in 2016 there was a showdown between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton at the dnc. This year there has been a lot of consensus building ahead of the convention. Sanders teamworking with bidens team to draft policy initiatives. Sanders will vote for the Democratic Party platform without his Signature Healthcare plan. Sanders yesterday defended senator Kamala Harris as the v. P. Pick even while his former National Press secretary lashed out on twitter saying it doesnt meet the black lives matter moments. Interesting to see how progressives react to this. Former Bernie Campaign manager told us a couple weeks ago. I think there are people who understand this is a demonstration of the fact that joe bidens coalition is very big, but i think those of us in the progressive wing of the party are determined to make sure that once joe biden is elected that people like john kasich are not part of the governing coalition. The police chief is blaming agitators for hijacking peaceful protest test and inciting violence. A fox news contributor. Your piece is a reality based look at trump and the post office. You say its a con game. They say he is trying to camper tamper with the election. The accusation is the president is crippling the Postal Service in order to suppress the vote in the election. Thats simply not what is happening. There is a whole lot of moving pieces to this. In may when the Congress Passed the first big coronavirus stimulus they gave the Postal Service the authority to borrow 10 million 10 billion. The post office has been losing money for a long time and asked for 75 billion. Democrats now want to give them 25 billion. They have money on hand. They are not projected to go broke any time this year and they deliver a lot of mail normally. They delivered 142 billion pieces of mail in 2019, 471 million pieces of mail every day. This year they delivered census forms, stimulus checks. Together those are a lot more pieces of mail than mailin election if every single american voted by mail, which they wont. So the idea that the Postal Service is not able to handle this seems to be completely wrong. There are, though, Serious Problems with some state election organizations that are not ready to handle huge voting by mail numbers. Sandra i encourage people to read your new piece, byron. It puts things in perspective as far as the quantities youre talking about that the post office is normally dealing with and what it would potentially deal with. At the same time you point out a problem in your piece with the president s handling of this. He is making things more confusing than they need to be. Trump made a mess of the issue. Didnt make a case against universal mailin voting and make clear why democrats wanted 25 billion for the post office. He suggested not agreeing to the 25 billion was a way to stop universal mailin voting. It is not. He left the issue more confused than it had been beforehand. Explain. I think after the president s interview on fox friends this morning i would still say that. He has really made a lot of confusing statements. First of all the money for the post office, as i said, really doesnt have anything to do with voting by mail. By the way, if you looked at the bills that House Democrats have written providing for money for the post office, doesnt say a thing about voting. It says some stuff about coronavirus protections but not about voting. The president is opposed to a 3 1 2 billion proposal for something called the Election Assistance Commission and that actually would go to states to help them implement universal mailin voting. The fact is we do not have universal mailin voting in the country and were not going to have it for the election. So the president can be opposed to mass mailin voting and say that its very problematic and indeed there have been big problems just this year with it. But getting the post office all messed up in this really confuses the issue and he has done that virtually every time he has talked about it. Sandra you continue to point out the problems that the post office has seen by pointing out these numbers. Total revenue in 2019 71 billion. Expenses totaled nearly 80 billion. A deficit 8. 8 billion on its way for fiscal insolvency in late 2021. That problem continues there. Meanwhile Bernie Sanders who well hear from tonight says this about the president and the postal system and what he is deliberately trying to development listen. He said we want to kill mailin balloting. We dont want millions of people to be able to cast their ballots through the mail. Well destroy the Postal Service and defund it. They cant vote. I guess that he thinks that a suppressed vote, a lower voter turnout will work for him. Sandra you continue to hear him and other democrats make that case, byron. Considering well hear from bernie and nancy pelosi is calling everybody back from recess. Where does it all go next do you think . Well, first of all the idea theyll defund the Postal Service makes no sense. The congress has already passed into law that 10 billion in Borrowing Authority and mark meadows, white house chief of staff who worked a lot on postal issues when he was in congress, says the white house would agree to 10 billion for the Postal Service. They are trying to streamline delivery. Last year overtime cost the Postal Service 1 billion. They are trying to reduce that and come up with a test program in which letter carriers deliver their mail early in their shift rather than late in their shift which leads to a lot of overtime. That is not blowing up the post office. It is trying to come up it may not work but it is trying to come up with a better way to deliver the mail without incurring enormous overtime costs. Sandra mark meadows says this is not a volume problem. He says this is a political narrative by my democratic colleagues. Urge everybody to read your piece in the washington examiner. He started by saying energy, fracking, stock market. What are the biggest differences . What case will he make for the biggest difference for those on the fence between voting for him and joe biden . Well, one of the things we like to say here is that in campaigns oftentimes what you hear are candidates talk about what theyll do in the abstract. Here is what i would like to do and promise to do. The beauty of this campaign you dont have to guess how things would look under either person. Joe biden has a 47 year failed record in elected office. With nothing to show for it quite frankly. When he was at the helm what we like to say is you dont have to guess how the economy would look. It was horrible. People did not have jobs. The jobs that were being created were being created overseas. Sandra during the Obama Administration . Absolutely. During this time of covid and rioting and looting in our streets you dont have to guess how unsafe our families would be. Joe biden has come out and says he wants to defund the police. Part of their movement. You dont have to guess how our safety would be impacted on that front. So when you look at those items and when you also look at the coronavirus, what joe biden did when he had the chance to fix a pandemic, he just closed testing. He said we wont test anymore. We know its all over the country. This president has sandra during the Obama Administration you have to reference the fact he had a significant drop in the Unemployment Rate coming out of the financial crisis. I want to throw this new cnn poll up because this is grabbing a lot of headlines and garnering allot of reaction although i know you say you dont like to look at the polls because of what happened in 2016. You Better Believe that joe biden and Kamala Harris will get somewhere between 8 and 10 point bump after this convention they put on solely because the media just fawns all over them. They dont ask them any tough questions or given the opportunity to because joe biden has now pulled kamala down in the hole with him and they keep themselves protected. They dont want questions. This president takes tough questions from members of the media every single day. Hours at a time and joe biden still remains hidden. The post Office Workers here like those across the country are preparing for what they believe will be a crush of mailin ballots for the president ial election. One new york state senator says he has a better idea. Thats those mail dropin ballot boxes. Ballot boxes are larger mailboxes set up by local election boards for voters to pop their ballots in the slot and they dont have to rely on the mail to get their ballots in or stand in line at a polling place because of coronavirus. A growing number of states coast to coast already use ballot boxes and Election Officials insist theyre a proven safe and secure method of voting. New york state has had recent foulups in mailin voting. A senator has a bill to put ballot boxes on the streets of the empire state. The best way to get your ballot to the board of elections if you dont want to vote in person in my opinion. We have the precedent here. Theyre secure, safe, they cut out the u. S. Postal service undermined by the Current Administration and voters will have confidence to know that their election ballot is going to be counted. But critics like President Trumps campaign claim ballot boxes arent safe and could be susceptible to voter fraud. Theyve sued in philadelphia saying boxes shouldnt be considered legal polling places. In philadelphia with a looser set of rules you could have votes that are double counted, you could have people voting multiple times. There is no security at the box. You could have people voting after the polls officially close. You need uniform standards that follow the rules and allow people to have certainty in the outcome of their election. Some states monitor ballot boxes with 24 hour cameras. His bill is now in the state senate and may need a lot of ballot boxes. In new york state there are almost 13 million registered voters. It is very tough to start a business from scratch not backed by Venture Capital money. So those kind of things have happened. The onerous regulations that makes it hard to hustle. New york was the kind of place in my neighborhood across the street i had a woman who worked in a manufacturing plant and she sold food out of her first floor window on the weekends. Another woman worked at the post office and she sold weed on the side. People hustled in my old neighborhood. They used to call it scrambling. The bottom line is new york you cant make it. You cannot make it if you dont have a certain pedigree in new york city. Thats run a lot of middle and lower income folks out who can afford to leave. Others have bunkered down hoping for better days. It already began. It was too expensive and new york is also a phony town. For all of the things they talk about, the racism has been a problem in new york city more so than anyplace in the south. The black women cannot get a raise versus white men. The other great thing about this test that we havent seen before is the cost. There are other saliva tests the fda has approved for use, one from rutgers back in april but those tests are 180. This test because of its speed will be 10 to 15. The thinking is here not only will you get this out to a bigger group of people but because the test results come back so quickly, and the cost this cheap it can be the first step in mass testing which we really still dont have at this stage in the game. Trace i was kind of fascinated you read there was concern when the thing started going because the nba players were being tested and already access to all these other tests and saying why are we letting the nba players being tested with saliva and they said we would do mass testing. This would be a good way for us to help the public. I mention the funding part of this that came from the Players Association and the nba.
