Several inches of rain and winds of 85 Miles Per Hour and a near fivefoot storm surge in some areas. Sandra isaias has weakened to a Tropical Storm now but poses a significant threat as it heads up the coast. President trump issuing emergency declarations for florida and the carolinas. President trump were working with each of those states and in particular as it relates to fema, the military, law enforcement, Everyone Needs to remain vigilant until it passes. There were tornadoes in Virginia Beach as well and weve seen, as this storm goes north, so do the tornadoes. North carolina into virginia and now Tornado Warnings in maryland as you mentioned. They have caused at least one confirmed death. Back in oak island, North Carolina where we saw cars flooded and homes on fire when oftentimes the storm surge knocks out the gas lines in these communities and it is very difficult in the middle of a hurricane for firefighters so get out to be able to put out the fires in these homes. Hundreds of thousands of people out of power. As this storm goes straight up the eastern seaboard of the United States it will end up in new york city later this evening and thats where they brought out what basically looks like a large inflatable hot dog. They expect storm surge second only to Superstorm Sandy a number of years ago. We know the damage that did there, sandra. The idea they can inflate this large barrier to keep the storm surge out of the tunnels damaged and had to be rebuilt after sandy. Sandra were in the early days of august, big tourism time. What does it mean for the businesses there . You just think about all the towns that this storm has rolled through. All the way down from myrtle beach, South Carolina up through hattaras and the outer banks and delaware. These are all communities that make their money on summer vacations. They only have a couple months to do it. Covid knocked out much of june for all the businesses up and down the boardwalk in Virginia Beach and others and listen to what this storm has done to business for this week. We canceled them for tomorrow for wednesday and thursday and just going to hurt us. A number of the businesses weve talked to also said they may have to be closed today and into tomorrow depending on that. Also as they try to clean up and get power back on. There is much of Virginia Beach and all up and down the coastline without power. Sandra you see the swimmers out as those waves get higher and theyre still out there in the water. They are. What are conditions like where you are . Its always surprising just how calm and usually what a nice day it is on the back side of a hurricane. As this storm has now largely left the carolinas alone. As you mentioned 11 10 last night the storm made landfall a half hour north of where i am. Winds at 85 Miles Per Hour when the storm made landfall and brought rain and storm surge. It didnt really let the tides get away. You saw flooding on the roads close to where the storm made landfall. Ocean isle it triggered house fires with five houses burning. Where the storm traveled in North Carolina you have 370,000 people without power and even after being downgraded to a Tropical Storm as you heard leland mention the storm continues to whip up tornadoes and needs to be taken very seriously. Trace Power Outages, is that widespread and what about fatalities in that area . The Power Outages certainly are significant. You can trace a path where this storm traveled. Thats where the power was knocked out. In terms of fatalities we have confirmation at least one person was killed as a tornado touched down in a trailer park outside of windsor, North Carolina. Several are missing. Sadly as the sun comes out and rescuers are able to go through the wreckage left behind by the storm it is possible the number of casualties could rise, trace. Sandra as of yesterday we know President Trump is now considering executive action on a coronavirus stimulus package as white house officials are now expected back on capitol hill today to continue negotiations with democrats after talks again stalled. The president citing some progress with them but blue state bailouts are off the table. President trump were having a very good discussion with nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer. The problem is they want to do bailouts of their various democratrun states and cities. And they want a lot of money. They want a trillion dollars for that. They want to do much more than covid related. They want to bail out cities and states that have been in trouble for years of bad management. In all cases democratrun cities. We dont think thats fair. Sandra Kristin Fisher is live from the white house with more on this. The president is considering unilateral action if capitol hill cant get a deal done. What exactly would that look like . The specifics are still being hashed out. At that briefing yesterday President Trump confirmed that he is considering taking executive action to stop two things. Payroll tax collection and evictions. President trump i want to do that. I dont want people to be evicted. Its chinas fault. Number two, if they are thrown out they will oftentimes go to a shelter with tremendous numbers of other people and the virus will spread and we dont want that. President trumps push for a payroll tax cut hasnt been well received by democrats on capitol hill or republicans. Theyve shot it down repeatedly. President trump believes he may be able to act unilaterally on this. The white houses preference is still to try to cut a deal on capitol hill with republicans and democrats largely because there is only so much the president can do when he is trying to secure billions of dollars of Coronavirus Relief funds. If they do not cut a deal, sandra, the white house is preparing to act alone on this. Sandra with that being the big question what can we expect today kristin in terms of negotiations on capitol hill . The top four negotiators will be back at it on capitol hill. Schumer, pelosi, mutschin and meadows. After meeting for two hours yesterday when schumer walked out he made it sound they were still in the very early stages of these negotiations. Listen here. Were really getting an understanding of each sides position. And were making some progress on certain issues moving closer together. There are a lot of issues that are still outstanding but i think there is a desire to get something done as soon as we can. And so we continue to work. I would have played for you what mark meadows or mnuchin said but they didnt speak in front of the cameras after the negotiations yesterday. Maybe they will today. Meantime the mayor of minneapolis is blaming minnesotas governor for not responding quickly to the protests following floyds death. Sandra in portland, oregon, 18yearold isaiah maza junior broke into the federal courthouse and detonated an explosive device and it injured a federal officer. The wildfire has consumed more than 41 square miles. Were talking about dry brush and timber and forced more than 8,000 people from their homes. Christina coleman is live in los angeles and christina were hearing the fire was sparked possibly by a vehicle. Thats right, trace, investigators determine the fire was caused by a malfunctioning diesel fuel sparking fires on friday. It happened in an unincorporated area about 85 miles east of downtown los angeles. Those flames exploded into the massive apple fire. Right now this fire is 7 contained so some progress since yesterday. However, about 8,000 people are still under mandatory evacuation. One injury has been reported and five structures have been destroyed including one home. That whole mountainside is covered with heavy fuels coupled with the steep terrain thats unaccessible at certain parts even for dozers it is hard for them to maneuver. It has burned more than 26,800 acres. Crews are engaged in a fire fight. Damage assessment teams have been deployed to survey the fire and see what has been destroyed and what can still be protected. Television stations have transmission towers in this area and there are also some water districts that have some pump stations in the area. Protecting those assets is key. Firefighters are relying heavily on aerial tactics like water drops as they try to get the flames under control in the steep and rugged terrain. Trace. Trace good job. The biden camp keeps making the point that the Trump Campaign has not formally committed to the Debate Commission that they will be in for those three debates. But we do know the campaign has put out a statement per our request saying we want to debate joe biden but we want the debates moved earlier and they want a fourth debate. They want more debates. But as far as the wall street Journal Editorial Board they are questioning whether it is going to happen. The headline. Will joe biden duck the debates . There are growing calls to shield the former vp from having to perform. The public deserves to see how well mr. Biden holds up under debate pressure while hearing his answers to pointed questions about policy proposals. You think back to the days where she was down there giving elbows to the traders on the floor so she could get through with her microphone and broadcast one of the first females to broadcast from the Trading Floor to the world what was happening. She is a star. Ive known her for more than 25 years and i do actually remember her making that break through broadcast from the floor of the exchange. Back in those days the floor of the New York Stock Exchange was jampacked with thousands of people. As you say, there she was right in the middle of it elbowing her way through to the front to interview people of the day. There she is ringing in the bell. There is maria and the opening bell has rung on wall street. She has done this before but a very special day for her. 25 years in the business. Blessed to have her as a colleague on the Fox News Channel and Business Network. A true professional. When it comes down to it she is all around one of the nicest people i know by far. Wow, the high point is covering the markets, going to record after record and really i think the real high point for me stuart is having this front row seat having been able to cover Business News and the markets while it was happening, while markets were trading and watching all these cycles from the individual investor revelation to the dot com boom and bust and globalization and the housing boom and bust. All of these cycles i was able to watch right from the floor of the exchange and have the front row seat speaking to all players involved. For me it was a high note to be able to really follow the incredible changes over a 25year period. It was an incredible 25 years. The floor changed, business changed, the Digital Economy came about. Remember in the 90s when we were on the doorstep of the year 2000 thinking everything would change. Amazon went public in the 90s, google, that was incredible. Globalization and also the idea that individuals back when i first started got the sense that they could actually get enough information for themselves and make their own Investment Decisions and change their lives over the long term by investing in the stock market. For me it was an incredible high point, big shoutout to dick grasso for having the vision to know we want to open this up. We want somebody on the floor to communicate whats going on down here. He allowed it. He was incredible and of course big shout out for cnbc for putting me down there. A lot was made there was a handful of people that didnt want me there. The truth is the majority of people were so supportive and wonderful to me and they are like family. Ill never forget when i was getting married in 1999 unknown to me they put a ball and chain on my ankle. It told me i was part of the family. What they do as a tradition, they dump a bucket of water on the person when they are getting married and put the ball and chains. They spared me the bucket of water and the alliance of floor brokers once did a roast of me and gave me a beautiful silver dish engraved. Thank you for enhancing the image of the New York Stock Exchange. The guys and gals on the floor have been lifelong friends. I adore them and grateful for all theyve done to help me get used to being on the floor. It is a special place. Sandra stuart, a quick story. He knows the time i spent on the chicago Trading Floors. Maria hosted the show while i was a reporter at the show at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and she walked onto the floor and the trading pits record for her arrival there. Back in my day, which is a very long time ago, there was only one show that dealt with business and that was wall street week back in the 1970s. There were no real stars. I was working on your show behind the scenes as a producer and i learned so much from you and lou dobbs and myron can del and the reason i had ease in terms of covering the stock market as it was trading because i learned firsthand at cnn. This was a different cnn. It was ted turners cnn. I learned how to cover a news story as it was happening and that was the first gulf war. I remember as a young Production Assistant working at cnn Business News we would look at the tv and there was bernard shaw under the bed in baghdad saying bombs are going off right now. It was ted turners genius to cover a story as it was happening. Because i learned all of that how to cover news as it was happening. Never been done before. All the networks would do the 6 30 at night news show. Because of that training i was able to cover the stock market as it was trading in realtime as it was happening. I learned that from my time covering the gulf war at cnn. I was so grateful to be able to go down to the floor and cover the market as it was moving, bring information to investors that they could get instantly and give them the information. It was a special time. You saw all of these mergers and discount brokers merge, get together because the world was changing. Good morning. Overnight the israelis hit multiple targets in syria according to the Israeli Defense forces intelligence outposts antiaircraft facilities were hit in these strikes. All of them belonging to the Syrian Armed Forces who israel says is responsible for attacks along the border. This was in response to four people trying to plant ieds near the israel syria border sunday night. All four people were killed when israel opened fired on the group. They were linked to an iranian proxy. Israeli government said theyll hold syria responsible. They fear retaliation by the Lebanese Group hezbollah. Last month one of the organizations fighters was killed in an israeli strike in syria and the hezbollah leader has vowed to respond. Israeli security cabinet is meeting as we speak right now and there is a lot of anticipation around those remarks set to take place tomorrow in lebanon by the leader of hezbollah. Several colleges announced mandatory coronavirus testing of their students including the university of kentucky where testing of students who have at least one class on campus has already begun. If you test positive and live in a greek house or have roommates, what happens then . Well, we have developed a modern Public Health infrastructure so we have our contact tracers, health connectors. This is a roadblock here in the county, as close as sheriffs deputies will get to the scene, a few miles down the road. The wreckage is so bad they cant let anyone near it. Crews are searching for the missing trying to secure the valuables littering the ground including generators and handguns. The sheriff has confirmed at least one fatality and at least three people missing. At least 10 homes completely destroyed. The aerial pictures are remarkable on how devastating the tornado touchdown was well north of where the storm first came ashore overnight. The sheriff believes it hit about 1 30 this morning and just ripped through that trailer park. At least 20 other people are hurt. Were told one trailer is unreachable because a tree is on it. We know that they are again searching for missing, searching for the possibility of more deaths. Three people are unaccounted for at this hour. There were Tornado Warnings overnight as isaias was approaching the shore and the major area where the hurricanes warnings were was further south and most worried about the tornado. We were fortunate last night, trace. We have crews out right now assessing damage in our city but like i said it was minimal. The story here is storm surge. We had a significant storm surge last night and the beach took the brunt of it. Trace its amazing because we see the pictures on the righthand side of the screen of the storm surge and saw cause ways flooded out and cars stranded and roads flooded out. How difficult was it to get the First Responders and for other people to get where they wanted to go during the height of the storm . We didnt really experience the wind that we thought we were going to experience. Our crews didnt have any problems getting out and going where they needed to go. We did get some rain, not a lot. But again, just to repeat the storm surge was the issue. Fortunately aftermath after matthew we had a project that helped considerably. Without beach nourishment we would have seen more flooding. Some of our streets go ahead. Trace just saying when you talk about the storm surge are you also are you including the high tide . I know you had almost a record high tide at times and that was pushing in as well, right . That had to be a big concern. It came in right at high tide so it was something that we were prepared for. I think one child death from covid because we forced school opening, thats one too many. We have children in need, we have children without supervision, we have children that dont have any internet that they arent learning.
