So weve got to really pull out the plug on getting every available resource to new york right now. Recognizing that unlike other countries which may have had a single peak overall in infection were likely in the United States going to see multiple peaks. New york is first now. Im worried about new orleans and what is happening there. I think were very concerned about detroit and other states like kansas and florida are also deeply worrisome if you look at the rise in cases there. Well see multiple peaks over time. The need for beds and materials including protective equipment as well as healthcare workers will grow in the coming weeks. Sandra at the federal level you heard the president extend his social distancing guidelines through april 30th now in order to stem the spread of this virus. Do you think that will be effective in doing so . I think the physical distancing guidelines are essential right now. When you have to understand in an outbreak like this in a Global Pandemic you have to look at the arrows that you have in your quiver. What are your tools to address it . We dont have a vaccine or medication proven to work and the only measure that we have right now is to prevent people from getting the virus in the first place by having them physically distance themselves from each other. If we can do that we can buy ourselves time. Time during which we can hopefully develop a medication but also time that we really need to beef up our Hospital Systems and to insure we have the workforce available and that we have widespread testing. If we dont use this time while were distancing to build that capacity, then we will find that when we go back to resuming our regular lives well see another spike in illnesses that we cant contain. Im disappointed like everyone else that we have to be in the Current Situation where we cant go out and be with our friends and family and cant go to work or school. It is hard on everyone including parents and kids. But this is the most effective strategy that we have at this moment. Well need it at least another month if not for longer. To your point it is difficult to stay in all day but that is what were all being asked to do. It is a sacrifice to save lives in this country. I think we have to be extremely cautious, sandra. There are many examples in medical history of medications that have shown a little bit of promise in some very early small trials and have later proven to either not be effective or to have untolerable side effects and keep in mind weve never really treated patients at scale with covid19 with this hydroxychloroquine so im optimistic well find something that will help. But i think we have to be we have to assume that hydroxychloroquine is not going to necessarily be the backbone of our treatment. This is why its so essential in these responses we lead with science and that we use the process of science to determine what works and doesnt work but what policies to pursue. I think well get through this, sandra. Well come out of this stronger even than before but the question of how much pain we will have to endure, how much suffering, well see and how many lives will be lost will be dependent on the decisions we make decision. Share with us one or two examples of what is happening on the ground that is concerning you . Well, i think one of the saddest things to observe are the elderly patients coming in, having been put in isolation and sometimes decompensating quickly to the point where the family cant get back in time to say their goodbyes. And this is certainly not unique to us here in new orleans. This is a new worldwide phenomenon. I think thats one aspect of this disease that touches us most deeply way. Obviously we have to protect the family members as well. Ed you have to protect family members and make she dont get sick and protect the privacy of these patients. So there is only so much you can say obviously in terms of documenting all of this. In the last 30 seconds or so we have what are you seeing with younger folks . You mentioned elderly patients. In some parts of the country and world despite the earlier idea young people wont get hit as hard we have seen some regions where young people are coming into the hospital. What are you seeing . Our hospital in the center of downtown new orleans, we normally see a lot of elderly patients. However, we have found that people in their 40s and 50s, it is not unusual to see them admitted and some of them do require intubation. So there is much we dont yet know about this disease. I think thats what frightens a lot of people, but of course it challenges us to learn more and to be proactive.
