We had the chance to ask the president about domestic issues as well including his criticism of Justice Sonia sotomayor in addition Justice Ginsberg after sotomayor wrote a scathing dissent in the public charge case that recently came before the Supreme Court suggesting the white house is too quick to circumvent the appellate process and go to the Supreme Court and seeming to take a swing at her colleagues on the conservative side of the court when she said most troubling the courts recent behavior on stay applications benefited one litigant over all others. It led the president to say that Justice Sotomayor and ginsberg should recuse themselves from any cases that have to do with the administration. I asked the president about that at the press conference. Here is what he said. President trump frankly Justice Ginsberg should do it because she went wild during the campaign while i was running. I dont know who she was for. Perhaps Hillary Clinton but she said some things that were obviously very inappropriate. She later sort of apologized. I wouldnt say it was an a poll gaoe. She sort of apologized. Justice sotomayor said what she said yesterday. You know what she said yesterday. A big story. And i just dont know how they cannot recuse themselves for anything having to do with trump or trumprelated. The other issue is trade. President trump was in meetings with the Prime Minister of india today saying that theyre going some distance toward negotiations. Beginning negotiations on rewriting the trade relationship between the u. S. And india. Right now india has tariffs on a lot of American Goods including motorcycles made in the United States. The president was hoping to get some roll back in the tariffs against Harley Davidson motorcycles. I asked him. He didnt see seem to get that agreement. Any trade relationship between the United States and india has to be fair and reciprocal. The United States is becoming the major arms supplier to india agreeing to buy 3 billion in american helicopters, apaches and blackhawks. He wants them to come closer as a military alliance. The president did not wade into certain controversies. He would avoid that. The citizenship Amendment Act before parliament in india is very controversial. The asked said he would leave that one to india. He very carefully stayed away from it. Sandra he is motorcadeing to the state dinner. We should see his arrival shortly. Ed fox news alert. I think so, sandra. I dont think it is a narrow victory but a substantial one. The latest polls have him up 5 points. 27, 22, Something Like that. And he needs to really show that he can dominate in an electorate thats also made up 60 black voters, which has been his firewall and claim all along through defeats in iowa, New Hampshire, even nevada has been hey, diverse electorate hasnt been heard from yet. Africanamerican voters, the base of the Democratic Party. Baby, its time to deliver. Sandra important to note the poll was taken before the results out of nevada were known. A moment for biden or Bernie Sanders to continue the momentum that he has had. How big is that for him . I think again sanders is hoping that in fact the momentum carries him on. Lots of people like to get on a band wagon. They are attracted by the idea of a winner. The problem for biden he hasnt done well in iowa and New Hampshire. Clearly Bernie Sanders is the one that dominated. Bernie sanders brings that momentum to South Carolina. Is he able to penetrate there is a big endorsement due tomorrow after this debate tonight that would come from jim clyburn, the top black house member in the state. The third Ranking Member of the house right now. And his endorsement could carry some sway. But well see where it goes. Historically you think back to the last time sanders ran in this state 2016 against Hillary Clinton. He got swamped. Sandra i want to read the a. P. Headline in South Carolina this morning. Buttigieg faces black voters wary of a gay candidate. A small but influential number of black South Carolina people maybe resistant to him because of his sexuality. Can he win the africanamerican vote . The way you put it was precise in your language. A small number in terms of the polling. Of course, tell you the truth, i wonder if people being honest in the poll. You have a strong churchbased black community, very conservative black community about issues of sexuality in the south. And they are just not about being open. People literally refer to it as the down low in terms of black gays. I think there is resistance there. As you point out a higher level of resistance even in that poll among blacks than whites to endorsing and supporting that gay lifestyle. Sandra buttigieg did receive the endorsement of one of the states largest newspaper saying he has an outsiders appeal. Message of unity. A quote from the headline. The Democratic Party president ial nominee will face the democrats need a nominee to seeks to bring americans together. How big is that endorsement . Not very big. Again, i dont think they dictate so much of the vote in terms of the black community. I think it might have some influence among mainstream white democrats in the state. But again, it is the fact that 60 of the voters next saturday will be africanamericans in South Carolina and i dont think they have that tremendous sway there. As i pointed out to you earlier. Jim clyburns endorsement might have more power there. The language was so good to me. What you hear from Pete Buttigieg about Bernie Sanders is he divides the democratic base. President and first lady have been on the ground being tourists at times traveling to some tourist destinations on the ground. A 36hour visit. The president , as he was heading over said the purpose was to reaffirm the close ties with Prime Minister modi and to talk about and tease the progress of that potential trade deal. Ed absolutely. And it is interesting because as you mentioned, tourist playing tourist for some of this. Those dramatic picture yesterday at the taj mahal of the president , remarkable. Also the speech that he delivered at the cricket stadium well over 100,000 people warmly received by the indian people. Quite a moment for this president on the world stage right now. Sandra more than 100,000 people packed to the Worlds Largest cricket stadium. All wearing white caps with the name of the event. It was led off this big visit. But really centered around new delhi. John roberts reported on the ground there. This is a big moment for the president on the world stage and there is the first lady wearing pink this morning as well. Her fashion has been talked about quite a bit during this trip for sure. She has wearing white yesterday with a green sash as she got off the plane. Ed very dramatic indeed. The president allies talk how she doesnt get enough credit on the world stage. You dont see her on the covers of big glamorous magazines. This is somebody representing america quite well on the world stage and you can see the first lady doing that while the president is still doing a lot of this business were talking about between the military contracts, trade deal that they are trying to forge. The president now doing diplomacy on the way into the state dinner talking to some of the v. I. P. S gathered for the banquet. Chatting it up a little bit and obviously the president getting ready to dinner and heading back home to washington sandra weve been talking about the markets. Markets back up today. If you read the New York Times headline this morning as trump visits india a trade deal remains elusive. What exactly do we know what is being accomplished on the ground there . We dont know. The president plays it close to the chest. He will say were coming up with a great new trade deal. You dont know what its all about. On the other side of the fence is not saying much either. I cant answer your question, sandra, because you just dont know what the nature of this deal might be or what kind of progress weve made. But the president wants more trade and he wants us to balance out our trade relationship with china with a much better trade deal with india. I would say its fairly positive. Can i turn it around for a second . You used to be a trader. And you were on this show on the fox business network. Sandra india is a Large Consumer of goods all around the world and a large producer of goods that are sent all around the world. Is a Major Economic powerhouse. The president talked about that this morning. He said he sat down to a business round table. He sat down with heads of Major Companies there. He talked about how impressed he was. He projected optimism about the future of india. But stu, if i could point to the markets as we look at the dow it is now basically unchanged on the day. It started out much higher but all of this after a more than 1,000point selloff yesterday on coronavirus fears. So what are you seeing and what are you hearing . It just turned negative. Look, this is my opinion. Weve got this new breakout of the virus in iran. Now, the iranians arent in a position to contain the outbreak. 50 people have died in this one town. A religious center. Pilgrims coming and going all day long. The New York Times said the pilgrims are still coming and going as of tuesday. I would question tehrans ability to control the virus and i would expect that alarm bells are ringing across the mideast. People flow all over the place there. I dont think they can control it. I think that has something to do with the lackluster market this morning after the big drop yesterday. He talked about that in india this morning. President trump i always thought that Justice Ginsberg should do it because she went wild during the campaign. She said some things that were obviously very inappropriate. Just dont know how they cannot recuse themselves for anything having to do with trump or trumprelated. Sandra here is what sotomayor said that sparked the president s reaction. It is hard to say whats more troubling. The government would seek this extra order relief seemingly as a matter of course or that the court would grant it. So he chose to tweet about that immediately following and he was asked about it this morning. What she is suggesting with all these conservatives on the court that the administration is going to the Supreme Court more often that any administration has done and new conservative voices on the court theyre ruling in favor of the administration. I think its a little surprising to have her say that particularly in an official response. And it does hark back to Ruth Bader Ginsbergs comments also that were antitrump during the election. But look, nothing is going to change. Administration will still be going to the court because they dont like what they get in the lower courts. Another example of how the Supreme Court has really gotten to be politicized in the appointment of the judges and administration. When you talk about barack obama and state of the union admonishing the Supreme Court in front of everyone. This is not unusual now for president s to criticize the court in ways that we would have thought unthinkable 10 or 20 years ago. Ed last thought . Facts do matter. What sotomayor was saying there are 21 instances where this administration has more or less gone to the Supreme Court where there was eight combined between bush 43 and obama. District wide 47 of the students are white but they make up 67 of those in the Gifted Program. Hispanics make up 12 of all students and just 4 of the gifted classes and blacks account for 15 of the student population yet only 1. 7 of those identified as gifted. District officials blame institutional racism. The testing that put those kids there is flawed. The identification and assessment has been flawed and thats what needs to change. So more students have the opportunity to get there. Many parents of kids in the Gifted Program at Washington Middle School are furious. They say without the advanced separated classes their children will be bored and lose interest in school. Nationally more than 3 Million Public School Students are in Gifted Programs and many districts have been dealing with the same equity issue. Calls to new york city to scrap its gifted and talented program or at least change the name. Miami decided to evaluate kids on a sliding scale giving an edge to students from lower income homes. Supporters of Gifted Programs say if you do away with them youll hurt the kids who cant afford to move or attend private school. The folks in the quarantine unit are not very symptomatic. Theyre testing positive except for two of them have tested negative. The two people in the biocontainment unit are more symptomatic and warranting medical care. Sandra what symptoms are they showing . Mostly low grade fever, some cough. The beginning signs of a respiratory tract illness. We have some of the patients in the quaranty unit exhibiting some of the same signs but more mild. Should they have called it a pandemic and would it have an impact the money, focus, resources to battle this once and for all . I can understand the reluctance to use the word pandemic. There is a lot of emotionality and panic associated with that. The fact of the matter is this virus has demonstrated the capacity to spread far and wide and quickly and is now in over 30 countries throughout the world. What we label it is immaterial. We need to start to become better prepared for this to spread within our country. Sandra your facility there has been prepared for a situation like this. I know you said that people in the area instead of fearing those patients heading to their community, they were happy thank you had that facility to accommodate them and treat them. How capable are we as a country to take in more patients if this gets worse . Well, as you mentioned the people in our community recognize were a National Resource and proud to serve that role. However, i think we need to start to prepare and have a mind shift that if this virus gets into the United States and starts to spread from person to person within the community, all facilities are going to need to be better prepared to deal with this. Most hospitals have what we call a pandemic plan. We have gone through the mental exercising figuring out how to deal with pandemic flu. In 2018 we saw all the candidates that Bernie Sanders, his organization backed fail to win any of them. But the new dems, the blue dogs, those are the ones that flipped the house for us and those will be the ones that help us flip the senate back. All my democratic friends are panicking and assuming if there is one alternative to Bernie Sanders theyll stop him because they believe the party is still the party of bill clinton. He was taken to the hospital overnight after experiencing heart palpitations and high blood pressure. The ambulance diverted to Bellevue Hospital because of health issues. But what is really important and what we should be looking at is that afghanistan not return to being the safe haven it was before 9 11 for terrorists. We need to keep our country safe from terrorism and thats why were over there. I was recently in afghanistan this fall and went to camp moorhead and another camp and saw the important work our troops are doing to train up Afghan Special forces, for instance. And also heard directly from our special forces of their work against isis. It is critical not to return to a safe haven and a afghan develop its own competency in fighting terrorism so we know it cant be used for a base for attacks against us. Ed the delicate balance that President Trump is trying to strike. He promised to get us out of americas longest war but not become a terrorist safe haven. You have the same principle here. Retired general jack keane said he doesnt trust the taliban and went on to say this. Politically, there is going to be huge separation here. The taliban dont want to participate in the political process. They would get no votes in. Yet the Afghan Government wants them if they are going to if we have an agreement they want them to be part of the constitutional democracy and share power under that umbrella. Ed how do you react to that in trying to strike that delicate balance there . First of all we cant trust the taliban, we know that. Well have to have oversight and accountability and Enforcement Mechanisms in this agreement. We do have a very tenuous political situation in afghanistan. It will be delicate and important to get details about this agreement. See what kind of enforcement provisions are in it and make sure we either have a partnership with u. N. Well need to develop our own capacity on some of the personal protective equipment. What i would suggest to all americans is that this is a disease that is highly contagious. It is not as lethal as some of the other coronaviruss weve seen but before to take the kind of precautions we do during flu season and check with the state department if you plan to travel abroad about their precautions in various countries. At the end of the day its something weve all got to make sure we are supporting our Public Health networks both federally and the communication between federal government, state and local governments.
