And there is another is it 5 now who escaped. He may now be down to only 5 hostages. That will be something that is of deep con season to the australian authority. If hes got weapons, if he has the bomb he claims to have, or bombs plurg he claims to have, then things will get nasty. So we are clearly at a huge turning points at what has been an unbelievable siege of a coffee shop in sydney. It looks like at least one other woman ran up the street coming out the door. We dont know about the morning has been holding them hostage. Lets listen in here for a second. That would have followed a decision they were in mortal danger. They are being signaled to bring out extra personnel. Glance crews they are calling for ambulance crews. So there are going to be injuries, or they wouldnt be calling for these crews. Medics going in as indeed the bomb disposal experts are going forward. They are being steered towards the building. I thinking about held back for his own safety as those operatives continue to clear the space. What was interest being the beginning of this assault is there were two operatives that we could see. There were a number lurking around the corner and it was clear there were several individuals on the side of the police had already penetrated that building. This is the scene 30 seconds ago at the cafe in central sydney. There has been an explosion of gunfire and hostages escaped or released in the last 30 seconds. This was the scene 15 minutes ago outside this cafe. Five hostages meeting there building. This gentleman is bringing himself forward to police. He lays spread eagle. Its been a dramatic 15 minutes. The hostage situation has clearly drawn to a conclusion. There has been a series of explosions. We heard rapid gunfire. Clearly events on the ground have moved at a pace now. We are not showing the live feed in order to protect the sensibilities of our audience. It is unfolding extremely rapidly. There have been, we can see evidence of medical attention being given to one ortwo individual including heart the background of the situation. Thats going on moments after these hostages managed to escape or were released. Well bring a version of those pictures to our viewers as soon as we are able to. But it has been a very dramatic sudden damage in events from the moment when limits just see this is the moment when five were released. I want to remind our viewers when these events have been unfolding we did hear from police, they wanted to resolve this peacefully. They will have done their utmost to do that. Nobody wants to see violence but this is the conclusion it looks like of this ongoing siege, 16 hours in. Still unclear how many people were held in that cafe. You suggest possibly 15, other reports suggesting up to 30. But at least 10 people released. We saw a woman brought out after the rapid fire. We are seeing pictures. We want to make sure we dont show them anything that would be upsetting to them. But there are lots of ambulance crews going in now and a few stretchers as well. Its quite a dramatic image. That was a Fierce Exchange of fire and it went on in at least two different locations. There are four ambulance stretcher teams that have gone forward to assess any injured. But there is what this how it would have been triggered is the moments at which the authorities decided the hostages were in mortal danger. It was looking as though that was possible. And something would have triggered this violent assault. Essentially about it Australian Special forces and police on that location. Just to give an idea of how dramatically that got underway. Lets listen and clear. Well listen to how this unfolded. That was around 30 seconds or so of intense gunfire. We saw on the corner of that building glass hearting and one of the armed officers on that corner. We cant see around the whole building. We dont know how many arms officers this would have involved. We didnt see a huge number of people rushing into the building. No. But in the background this is the point at which one of the hostages apparently uninjured has been released. The reinforcements are going into the background. This isnt the only points of entry being used by the operatives. It will be a mixture of Counter Terrorism police and australian sas and other commandos. And now we are seeing the movement of credits being taken away into ambulances. But what is strike being this is the scale of the gunfire used. Once they decided to go in on a breach like this if hes going in harold with the intent to disable oral kill the hostage taker that would be in response to mortal threat to hostages. The question is did he have smaller explosives he was able to detonate . He claimed he had that. Or did he have a mor a more powerful weapon that was available. Having to go into this building where there are innocent people, hostages which they would have known were in there, there was an armed whose table taker and a risk of injury. There were four people brought out on stretchers. At least four hostages brought out. They may be part of the assault team. One may be the perpetrator of this incident. I think you are right. Strangely enough when i have spoken in the past. The normal trigger on a british operation, it will be the same model followed about it australians is to go on the offensive at the points of which a hostage or a number of hostages are in mortal dane ever. That may have been triggered by the explosion people heard after these five hostages managed to make their escape, then fairly soon after that moment, that very powerful firefight ensued. Lets listen to how that unfolded. 16 hours into this hostage situation. Earlier midmorning people on their way to work grabbing quick coffee. The man armed with a gun. He said he planted two guns inside the surround areas. The door was locked. Other people suave this man armed. He had a flag which he told the hostages to hold up up to 2 hours at this time. But in the first few hours 5 hostages managed to escape and two different sequences. The camera is there at the moment which is why the shot isnt changing. You can see the man in the green. 20 minutes. Then within the next few minutes there was a loud series of explosions within the next building, since that time. We have seen ambulance crews. Its happening quickly. We now the whose table negotiators as we try tree solve this. I think it striking the assault went in with such ferocity. Bill what a moment for the people of sydney and everyone watching us this morning. 10 30 in new york. Its 2 30 in the moaning in sydney, australia. This has been something else. To watch the drama unfold. What we dont know is the condition of the status of the whose table taker. We do not know how many people might perhaps still be inside if at all. And we dont know based on what the anchor from sky news said about four plan crew being called in for their help and he distance whether that means are there four injured or could it be worse. We dont know if they escaped. But that was the catalyst. What would happen if Something Like this happened in new york or an american city. More after the break. Back to this still unfolding story in sydney. What we heard about 20 minutes ago was a volley of gunfire. It was intense, it was sustained, and this is how it sounded a moment ago in sydney. [gunshots firing] bill that sound just bouncing off the brick walls and the pavement in sydney, australia. That was 20 minutes ago, it has been quiet since, but we dont know the resolution of what has happened inside that shop. Back with us live in london. You have been reporting on this in london, what more do you have from their . Awaiting the tracking on a couple of different video feeds and alongside me is one of my cameramen here, longtime veteran in sydney, he knows the street structure very well. The sense we are getting is that it is over. We do not have an official from police. We will talk to them again, but their style, their manner of acting is as if it is over. But it was a dramatic finish, if it is finished, to the siege and perhaps a bloody end. As you know, there was a loud blast of gunfire. Lets retrace the last 20 minutes. There was one loud blast. We saw as many as five hostages weve, five or six have gone, and then we saw the massive last. Police were inside and took the guy out. We dont have that confirmed, but we have a sense that was a live fire blast aimed at the individual, at the hostage. We have seen other hostages flee and we have other bodies coming out on stretchers. It is now reported according to one of the australian tv networks, there were four hostages injured. By our accounts, 11, five earlier, Something Like 16 hostages have come out running meaning they came out intact. We havent been able to see the hostage takers. If he has been taken out, he might be left there for the Forensic Experts to then go inside and find out exactly what he did, exactly what he was shooting come find out exactly what was with him including the threat he has made in the past reportedly there were bombs there. One bomb squad member at the scene, but we havent seen the police askin acting a lot of nervousness as if there was a bomb, some pretty much discounted that. It has been a fast developing story. We have been reporting, Police Confirmed to fox news the identity of this man. It turns out to be a little bit twisted. That would be a safe description for him, and iranian refugee camp australia 15 years ago and was charged with sending letters to the Service Number families in australia, the soldiers who had died in afghanistan starting in a condolence way and saying these were baby killers. He is dealing with that charge, not taken away from him on friday, he was in court reacting to that apparently decided to make this new move. Back to you guys. Steve joins us now, executive director of the project on terrorism. I know you have been talking to people on the ground there. Tell us what you think about this person who held his people hostage and what we have seen so far today. Kudos to New South Wales police and the s. W. A. T. Team. They moved in massive force, and executed very well. As i understand, took out the hostage taker, who by the way we discovered, me and i organization, project on terrorism just retrieved this a pledge to isis aactually month ago in which he offered to be a martyr for islam. There is no doubt this is a isis contact of terrorism. As i can tell you my sources in Australian Police intelligence, time is ticking away as the debriefings of release hostages showed he was getting agitated, in the open Line Communication between him and New South Wales police he was becoming more violent threats, there were indications he was prepared to detonate bombs he said he had on him, he was wearing a vest, a question if he was wearing a suicide vest but as the day wore on an estimate into the early evening, there was a time taking issue about whether they should move and they felt at this point as i understand it the had to move because he was prepared to do something. At this point they resolved it. There is no doubt at this point they had to move based on intelligence they are receiving from the early debriefing of the hostages and their own surveillance of the bases outside and you saw it on the video, using the protective gear. Martha they absolutely did. Several people went out to were still trying to figure out how many people may have been in there at the end. We saw for individualscome out on stretchers. Wwere waiting to hear more information on their condition and it is expected the hostage taker that you had been referring to come Man Haron Monis, also referred to, his iranian in his background. That is not typically the isis connection would be difficult to draw, but as you point out, he was clearly influenced by this group. How do you draw a line or do you in this point . Being able to draw shiite ann all types of muslims to their battle because he is establishing a callous. He was on the radar screen for the australian ci four years now. One demonstration were dismayed in medications overseas with islamic terrorists and his behavior in terms of what he has posted to social media and hate. They have known about this guy, but he was arrested several times in the past. Was he known to be a potential terrorist . Yes. Could they have stopped it . Obviously not. This is a problem with people who act alone without the conspiracy of other people, hardly a way to interject them. They have interjected five major terrorist plots including one in which islamic extremist and terrorists behead australians in the heart of sydney. Mostly a has one the best records in the best Intelligence Services on islamic extremist in their own country. As we have seen in our own country, hard to see individual lone wolf terrorists. Martha as you point out, australia has been very aggressive passports of people that have suspicion of, the United States has not done that. England has done that as well. Im curious from your perspective, you see what australia did there. We believe this is resolved for only the gunman needs to be accounted for. We hope and certainly we pray frankly hostages are all okay. We havent been given that word just yet. How then is australia trying to manage what could potentially be the threat of a lone wolf when you are trying to keep the public calm in a country where you have already passed laws where you. Go fight in iraq and syria, we will keep an eye on you we will prevent you from coming back to this country. First let me say counterterrorism unit and eunice in australia are terrific and one of our closest allies in the world. What we saw was the changing face of terrorism that it is not necessarily coming from a member or official member of isis or any other al qaedatype organizations. It can be a fanatic, somebody on the edge. We see that in canada, we see that in new york, in queens, they are inspired by what they see from isis. I do want to say here the climate created by isis which is new, killing two people on the edge, it is a real challenge to police and Law Enforcement, it has to be under intense scrutiny and intense surveillance looking for indicators of somebody who can act like this and even then it will be tough to show the need for heavy surveillance to get as many sources as we can into these communities were these type of lunatics come from. People on the edge with islamic leanings. Bill as you were talking the police gave the word out the siege is over. After more than 16 hours. Now we await the fallout. But the gunman is still barricaded inside a house outside philadelphia. Multiple shootings this morning at three different homes, and the killing of five individuals. All of this playing out in the early hours, 4 25 this morning. Police say the man is suspected of killing a woman and also to people in lansdale. They believe there are two People Killed inside the house he has now barricaded himself inside of.
