David and explained about iran before takeoff. Our own david spunt is at the white house. Good morning, laura. The president held a long q a on the lawn of the white house, for about 25 minutes or so he talked on several different topics. Weve got word from the white house that the president is at camp david. He will be meeting with advisors this weekend to talk about that iran policy. Now, speaking about that iran policy, the president called off iranian air strikes in spite of increased pressure and increased tensions with tehran. They shot down an unmanned drone. He received intelligence that 150 people would be killed and he said yesterday killing 150 people for iran shooting down an unmanned drone did not make sense. I asked him if hed meet with irans leadership up to the ayatollah, he said its important to have dialog, that its important to do. So, listen to what the president said about meeting with iranian leadership. Very important to me so well start all over. We could have a deal with them very quickly if they wanted to. Its up to them. But if iran wants to become a wealthy nation again, become a prosperous nation, well call it lets make iran great again. Does that make sense, make iran great again, okay with me, but theyre never going to do it if they think in five or six years they will have a nuclear weapon. He said several times he wants dialog. They mentioned sanctions, but they didnt seem to be aware when he talked about sanctions yesterday. On a completely different topic, he responded to the allegations made by author e. Jean carroll. She says that he assaulted her at a department store. He put out a statement saying he never met her in his life. She included a photo of her, her exwife, himself and his wife ivana and i asked him. I have no idea, theres a picture were shaking hands it looks like at some kind of event, i have my coat on. I have my wife standing next to me, and i didnt know her husband, but he was a newscaster. But i have no idea who she is. So President Trump talking about several topics here on the south lawn, again, he is at camp david right now, a place hes only really been a handful of time since hes taken over here at the white house, but talking about that iran strategy. President trump says in the end, hes hoping dialog turns out to be the key. Laura, leland. David spunt at the white house. Leland and with that we bring in california congressman garamendi. Good to see you. Make iran great again, what do you think of that . I dont know, im just going to take a deep breath. [laughter] what next . Were still working on making America Great again and weve got a lot of things to do. I just think that its time for all of us to settle down, get a clear policy and clear goals and clear objectives in mind and then set the pace to do that. Leland boy, a lot has changed since you and i talked on thursday night at about 11 00. I know. I dont know what to say here. Its the Administration Needs to really settle down. They need to get their key people in place. Right now, the entire department of defense is in transition. Theres some excellent people there. Theyre leaving. New excellent people are coming in, theyre not exactly in place yet. We have time to retaliate. We have time to put whatever pressure is necessary on. The president has had what he calls the maximum Pressure Campaign underway, which in part, i think, was part of what has led to these various escalations by iran. Yes, always go to negotiations. Theres plenty of time later. There are a lot of problems with iran, not the least of which is the efforts, the work theyve done for more than 30 years now with various terrorist organizations in the area. Their nuclear ambitions, apparently theyre resorting those, now that the jcpoa, at least the United States has pulled out of that. So, yeah, theres a long path out ahead in an extremely important situation here and we need thoughtful about it. Leland as the president noted earlier he has now taken criticism from both sides, a lot of criticism from both sides, the people on your same side of the aisle. Take a listen to what he had to say and then well get your thoughts. Everybody was saying im a war monger and now they say im a dove, and i think im neither, you want to know the truth. Im a man with common sense and thats what we need this this country is common sense. Leland does the president have a point, that at least in the eyes of the democrats he cant seem to do anything right . Well, i think the problem here is he talks too much. The kind of action that he took, i think, is appropriate. I think that an immediate retaliatory strike, which we call kinetic, which is basically things that go boom, had not been completely thought out and this next effect, we take a strike and then what does iran do, back and forth. So, yes, he did the right thing by calling by not proceeding, but i think he did the wrong thing by talking too much. These are things that you need to keep close to your vest. Holds your cards close and then have a clear plan of where you need to go and how you might get there. Taking into account the second effects of what happens. Leland when president obama talked about the red line in syria and then pulled back, you had different thoughts about that, as things went on. But nevertheless, you point out, you say look, the president came to the right conclusion and you say you agreed with him in his decision not to strike. Is there a reason to sort of take a breather and say, okay, the president did the right thing for a day are rather immediately jumping, theres too much chaos and the defense departme department, et cetera . The facts are what i said. The action he took should have been done quietly. There are other things that need to happen. Youve got to get your allies in line and when you say, i want to understand, when you say he should have done a quietly. In essence he did do it quietly. He never said he was going to strike, and he came out and said i decided know the to strike. What was he not quiet about that you think he shouldnt have said . Well, the entire action, if youre going to take a strike, if youre going to use a kinetic strike, you want to make sure that your allies, the other people in the area, the other nations in the area are ready for what might very well be a counter measure. Leland but he didnt do that. He didnt take a strike. I mean, curious. I agree with that. Leland what are you saying that he said that he shouldnt have said . You said he should be quiet. What did he say that he shouldnt have said . He should not have announced why he took why he started and why he stopped. Leland okay. That is a that creates enormous confusion among our friends as well as our enemies, as to what they might expect next. Right now were in a pause. Thats a good thing. Theres talk of negotiations. Thats a good thing. Theres talk of additional sanctions, maybe they work, maybe they dont work, but those are paths that need to be fully explored not just by the United States, but by other countries. The jcpoa is still in effect for some countries, although iran is now in the process of violating it. All of these things are very complex. The meeting taking place at camp david now, extremely important that that go forward that there be a clear plan and one more thing, which is essential, in my mind, if the president decides that he wants to do a kinetic, that is an offensive action against iran, that is an act of war, and that requires that the that he come to the congress to seek permission to do so. The constitutions absolutely clear. Leland congressman. On that matter. Leland well, and you have a lot of support from both sides of the aisle and both chambers as well, both the house and senate on that. We appreciate you starting your weekend with us and hope it gets better from here, sir. It will. If we take the time to think it true carefully and then take action. Leland all right, sir. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. Leland thank you for being with us. Thank you, my pleasure. And now the House Foreign Affairs committee, aft before w get to this, lets talk about what the congressman said. That he feels that the president is talking, i want your reaction on it, and congressman garamendi thinks he should scale back on that. I think the president is doing exactly what he needs to do and i commend the president for doing that. I remember growing up my dad saying any fool can get into a fight. It takes strength and courage to walk away from one. What iran has to know, we are prepared if necessary much when you look at what they do, they shot down a piece of equipment. I think that President Trump ought to send them a bill and sue them and when they dont pay it take them to the world court let them put more pressure on iran. It justifies them having sanctions in place and more people will come to our side. It shows the bad actor that iran is since the 79 overtake. I want to talk about sanction ins a minute, but some people in your party saw this as a weak approach, the pulling back. What do you make of this. Absolutely not, i think it takes more restraint to pull back. Again, if there was People Killed in that, american citizens, or military personnel, it would have been a different scenario, but i think the president did exactly right. He had a piece of equipment, about 30 million, very expensive in International Air space. If iran could do to that. They shot through space that the airliners travel, this is what the world needs to call out not just america. Speaking of that where are we with our allies on that. If you go back to the jcpoa, pulling out of that, that was upset, but that was agreement passed through nobody voted on that in the house and indebted the United States of america to be in that and i think he did right by doing that and i think youll see more of our allies and the european nations and around the world, saying, President Trump was right in doing that and this justifies us pulling out of that and i think youll see more people come to our side with more sanctions and economic pressure on iran. How does what does that look like . Where do we go from here in terms of the best diplomatic approach . Many agree thats the way to go, but what does it look like . Well, i think you saw the president say, lets make iran great again. I think anytime youre willing to sit down with an adversary and have a conversation, theres hope for the future and an opportunity for the future. And if iran will put the nonsense that they do around the world and we can go, you know, decade by decade of the terrible things theyve done with the largest state of terrorism and get them to focus, have them become trading partners, i think that everybody will be better off and the iranian people will better off. Youve talked about the sanctions and lets talk about what you would like to see. Well, i think you see the nations that have pulled back on buying iranian oil. There are still nations buying that, china is still buying it, all the other nations that are still buying that, supplying money to the Iranian Regime, who has got terrorist networks around the world, theyre in south america, theyre in central america, we certainly know what theyre doing in syria. When President Trump did the jcp oa and that, hezbollah got rebuilt and rearmed and it was the money that came from the United States that went to the ayatollahs, that went to rebuild a proxy group tore for iran thats doing all kinds of strikes around the world. They went to the Houthi Rebels that are bombing the saudis and theyve shot at our ships out in the mediterranean or gulf of oman. This is what iran does with the economy, growing the economy and come back into the modern world. We have a chance to sit back and were in the pause, a good time to talk about it. I want to thank you. Thank you so much. Yes, maam. Leland. Leland be sure to catch Fox News Sunday for Chris Wallace interview with arkansas senator tom cotton and also what John Garamendi was talking about approval for a strike. And on media buzz, talking to sean spicer about the medias coverage about President Trumps decision on iran, 11 a. M. Easte eastern. The South CarolinaDemocratic Convention is underway, nearly two dozen of the 2020 hopefuls are there to make their pitch. Yesterday jim cliburns world famous fish fry brought out much of the field vying for early support in the early state. None other than peter doocy on the ground, columbia, South Carolina as the speeches are, it looks like taking a bit of a pause, peter. Its lunchtime here in South Carolina, leland where joe biden is the front runner, but he doesnt speak until the end. Day, so the rest of the field is here making themselves heard. Particularly today, kamala harris, who was the first contender of the day at the Convention Center and who made a grand entrance surrounded by a drum line before taking the stage and trying to turn President Trumps signature slogan against him. I know that we have in this white house a president who says he wants to make America Great again, well, what does that mean . Does that mean he wants to take us back to before schools were integrated . Does that mean he wants to take us back before the Voting Rights act was enacted . Does that mean he wants to take us before the Civil Rights Act was enacted . Does he want to take us back to before roe vs wade was enacted . Because were not going back. Harris was at jim cliburns fish fry with most of those except for Pete Buttigieg who stayed back to deal with the aftermath of the policeinvolved shooting and he referred at one point to the victim who allegedly wielded a knife as many like a Family Member that died. And a tragic shooting of a resident of our community by a police officer, it is as if one member of our family died at the hands of another, and even as an outside process works to determine what happened, we already know why such deep wounds are surfacing, why our whole and the crowd here is not just energized by talk about the first in the south democratic primary, theres also a lot of talk about the general election and not just getting out the vote to try to beat trump, but also trying to get out the vote to try and beat the republican senator who is up this cycle, lindsey graham. Leland. Leland josh kimbrel, talk radio in South Carolina as well about that issue. Thanks, peter, appreciate it. And ice is set to begin immigration in raids and te in ten cities this sunday. And as the president touts the decision other officials are wary. Christina coleman joins us with more on that. Hi. Hi, laura. President trump just spoke about the raids on the white house lawn this morning, saying again when people come to our country illegally, they will be deported. Were now just hours away from when these raids are get to begin. The feds are expected to target about 2000 families facing deportation orders in as many as ten cities, including los angeles, San Francisco, houston, chicago, and miami. Democratic california governor Gavin Newsome called trumps proposed raids cruel and misdirected and newsome putting out information informing the immigrants of their rights in case theyre up for deportation. And newly elected chicago mayor Laura Lightfoot writing on twitter, my strong objection to any had further raids, or raids. Further i reiterated that cpd will not cooperate with or enforce ice actions. And immigrant groups say it raises a threat to the entire immigrant community not just those facing deportation. What we see with these threats is really to create not just fear amongst the individuals that theyre targeting, but fear amongst the entire community. The upcoming efforts supposedly focuses on people who already received final deportation orders from a judge, but who have not yet left the country and the president added this morning, ms13 will also be a target. The deportation raids, as you call them, are really a group of very, very good Law Enforcement people going by the law, going by the rules, going by our court system and taking people out of our country who came into our country illegally. Were very focused, ice, ice is these are fantastic people. Were very, very focused on getting ms13 out of this count country. Here in los angeles democratic mayor Eric Garcetti reaffirmed that l. A. P. D. Wont play any role in immigration raids and l. A. Is also, a socalled sanctuary city. All right, Christina Coleman for us in our l. A. Bureau. Thank you so much. Leland. Columbia, South Carolina, a lot going on in South Carolina this weekend. South bend mayor, 2020 candidate Pete Buttigieg speaking at the planned Parenthood Action Fund president ial forum, thats different than the state Democratic Convention going on, but a lot of the candidates are double dipping today at both events. Josh kimbrel of talk radio excellence in South Carolina on with us a little bit later to break that down. Laura and some sad news out of hawaii. Nine people are dead thereafter a skydiving plane crashed friday night. The aircraft reportedly crashed as some of the passengers Family Members waited nearby. Fire Officials Say the plane was in flames by the time they arrived at the scene. The victims names have not yet been released. An investigation is ongoing. Leland we are learning a little bit more about the 11 american tourists who died vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Now the countrys tourism minister said those responsible will face, and we quote now, disciplinary measures to fit their actions. So what does that mean . We bring in jeff paul in Santo Domingo with a little bit more on breaking that statement now. Hi, jeff. Hi, lelaneland, yeah the tou minister firing back, he believes most of what is being said is an exaggeration. He believes this situation currently as it stands is being fueled by speculation. We have shown that first, theres not an avalanche of dead american tourists in the coun y country. Were learning that at least one resort here in the Dominican Republic is responding and making some changes following the deaths at least 11 americans. The Hard Rock Hotel says its going to be removing all alcohol dispensers from each of the room that comes after that number keeps growing and families of some of the people who died start speaking out. Despite that, tourism minister saying theres no mystery, that the Dominican Republic has nothing to hide. Some of the families arent buying that. David harrison died after becoming severely ill in his room at the hard rock resort and she remains suspicious of the situation. Dont believe anything the dominican is saying. Deep pushing, we need to find answers and find out what people are dying from. The dominican is not going to be honest with us. Now, the son of one of the other people who have died here in the Dominican Republic, he was on fox news and curious to hear what the Donald Trump Administration has to say what is going on. So far really no comments or tweets from President Trump on what is happening in the dr, but were all waiting for results of three toxicology tests. We could expect those maybe next month and even the tests that the fbi is said to be assisting with, leland. Leland well wait for those, jeff paul, thanks so much. Laura. And President Trump not ruling out the use of military force in iran. As leaders in both countries question whether a diplomatic solution could be on the table. Garrett tenney joins us with the very latest on that, hi, garrett. This situation has been escalating the last few weeks. The fact theres not been loss of life has given folks around the globe there could be a diplomatic solution around the corner. The white house suggested that any diplomatic solution would include additional sanctions against iran. The president reiterated that point as he was departing the white house. Take a listen. Were moving forward with additional sanctions on iraq. Were putting on iran. And additional sanctions are being put on iran. So far there werent any new sanctions in iran who already have sanctions on. And the president s calling off a strike. The timing of it raises concerns that the administration doesnt have a clear plan for how to deal with iran. He should not be saying stuff like that publicly because it gives an impression of a level of indecision. I wish he was more discrete. And others are praising the president for not escalating the standoff with iran. One other wrinkle, Iranian State is reporting that they dispensed an employee on charges they were spying. All of this will come up on the u. N. Security Council Meeting on monday. A lot to discuss that. Thanks for keeping us uptodate. Garrett tenney. Leland. Black lives matter. We want to hear you say it. Of course, black lives matter. Then fire mayor Pete Buttigieg taking heat in his hometown friday facing backlash over the shooting. He skipped a couple of campaign events. And hes back on the trail at democratic events, and with that we bring in the voice of South Carolina, talk radio host josh kimbrel. Good to see you. Leland what do you make of this that buttigieg is sort of being torn between the new rising star on the campaign trail and then this unrest back at home . Well, first of all, its good to be with you, its good if youve get all of this coverage for South Carolina, i can tell you right now there are enough democrats in South Carolina, we could have enough for a congressional seat. Leland i dont know a congressional seat, but maybe a Basketball Team or baseball. A sports team. Theyre trying balance the rail, straddle elements of the base in South Carolina. 61 of democratic primary voters in my state are africanamerican. And the latest poll, twothirds of africanamerican voters describe them as politically moderate and joe biden and Pete Buttigieg are trying to bridge, the socialist wing, the majority of the white voters and then africanamerican voters which tend to be more tradition values oriented particularly in the south in South Carolina. Leland buttigieg answered a number of tough questions on the africanamerican votes, he has not polled well among them and brought up a number of times, does the fact that hes openly gay make it more difficult for him in the Africanamerican Community other than the community, the more liberal white community, more upper Class Community . I believe it plays some factor and leland, here in South Carolina, im a republican and were republican state, but beyond that were a conservative state, by that traditional values reign supreme regardless of ones background and whenever you make the campaign very Progressive Social stances that doesnt sit well with the voters in my state even on the majority of my state, and africanamericans who hold traditions and talking about criminal justice reform. Leland a lot of discussion about biden while he was at cliburns fish fry, say that three times fast, that he by far got the biggest response from a largely africanamerican crowd, even some were saying larger than some of the africanamerican candidates who were there. You noted this issue of trying to pander to the very far left of the democratic base. Bill maher, i dont know if he was talking about the democratic election, but the reaction. If you want to base a campaign paced on reparations and concentration camps then its going to be very hard to win the election, im not saying you cant do it, but the contra positive of that, if somebody like a joe biden is able to placate that part of the party, but not necessarily pander to them and move to the center, that democrats could be somewhat challenging in 2020 for the president . Well, i cant believe im going to say this, leland, but i actually agree with bill maher there. The reality you have africanamerican and got that on tape for that one. Go ahead and mark it. The majority of africanamerican voters, nonhispanic voters, hispanic voters, they care about their kids and having a better opportunity on america, i believe if the democrat run on the far left wing socialist agenda, theyre not going to win and the republicans focus on an opportunity agenda, we focus on education, jobs and lower taxes and opportunities, if democratic one this secular left Wing Campaign they are going to suppress the voter turnout. Bill maher is right, they cant play the game of talking about reparations and socialism and actually win. Leland you bring up a good support. We always talk about tacking left during the primary or tacking to your base for the primary and move to the center for general. You made the point what plays well for democrats and democratic activists may not work in South Carolina. As always, we appreciate the time, sir. Have a great weekend. You, too, always a pleasure to be with you, leland. Leland speaking of South Carolina, a number of the candidates at the planned parenthood rally. Well check on those in just a minute. Laura. Laura well, would he have weve got a lot of news ahead with President Trump as he plans to remove undocumented families tomorrow. Well tell you how sanctuary cities are reacting. Thats coming up. Ice moving ahead with plans to begin arresting as many as one million undocumented migrants in ten major cities tomorrow. Everybody is standing by for this, including miami, chicago, San Francisco and new york. Mayors in those cities speaking out saying they will not assist in the raids. For more on this, we bring in trees is a ca Theresa Cardinal brown at the policy center. We were talking about this, what a day this is going to be tomorrow. We dont know how many cameras will be in place to capture some of this action, but as this first ever mass roundup begins, this feels like this is going to be a Law Enforcement showdown. Youve got the feds on one side, the locals on the other. How do you see this happening . Well, first of all i would say that for the ice agents out doing this, this level of publicity is actually not what they want. Normally, this amount of advance notice is not something they want. They want their operations kept secret until the moment they knock on peoples doors. All of this talk is probably going to mean that a lot of people theyre trying to target are not going to be there. Right. It may make things a little more dangerous for them if they have to go and find people in other locations. So, ordinarily, this is not how these kind of operations would go down and i would temper expectations for how many people ice is actually going to be able to find. Laura right and i want to clarify its not the first ever, its the latest roundup as we look at images of things that weve seen happen before. Obviously its a tough job for everybody who is involved. I want to talk to you about the detention facilities where undocumented migrant families are being held because they released figures show that 600,000 migrants have been taken into custody and in may, the large e large largest apprehension and alexandria ocasiocortez compared those to concentration camps and which has caused debates how the undocumented migrants are treated while in custody. We want to play what she said. Its the academic definition of concentration camps are targeting the communities and putting them in detention camps without a trial and thats what the government is doing and thats what the Trump Administration is doing. All right, so what do you think of her characterization of those facilities . I think it doesnt matter what you call them, what matters is whats going on. We do need to figure out a better way to care and treat those at the border. The Current Situation is not acceptable. The acting Homeland Security said so, but thats where Congress Comes in. If we want to improve the conditions under which theyre processing people they need to step up and find money to support that. I think thats where its time to stop talking about what you call it and start doing something about it. Laura and talking about what you call it because weve heard the words human rights violations. The question is what the Trump Administration is doing and how theyre handling it. Is it a human rights violation in your view . In my view the conditions under which people are kept right now are violating human rights. Its overcapacity, undersanitary conditions and obviously seen deaths and medical care, but thats a combination of the volume coming, the fact that our infrastructure at the border was never meant for this volume and this kind of population, and we need to fix that. We need to adjust how we do things at the border to address this new population. Laura and it sounds like there have been adjustments, at least adjustment is coming we have a report saying undocumented migrants could decrease 15 to 20 this month. So, one of the questions out there, is President Trumps threats of tariffs against mexico actually work . Is that why the number is fluctuating . A one months dip is hard to tell. And this is when it usually dips because the weather and temperatures increase. One month is not what you want to look at. You want to look at a series over the previous year, its too soon to say whether this is a blip or a turn. Laura tomorrow will be telling and an interesting day no matter what happens well of course keep our viewers up to speed on that. Thanks for your perspective. Theresa cardinal brown, thank you. Leland next week we could get a verdict on a navy seal accused of murder. And what you make of the testimony of another navy seal that the man you see there didnt do it. I dont keep track of regrets. And i dont add up the years. But what i do count on. Is boost® delicious boost® high protein nutritional drink has 20 grams of protein, along with 26 essential vitamins and minerals. Boost® high protein. Be up for life. New details now in the Edward Gallagher war crimes trial. Two navy sales say they saw gallagher shoot at an old man and a young girl in iraq. And this came after the stunning testimony that he killed a fighter, and he, not gallagher after he was stabbed. And andrew, i appreciate you being here with us, because, boy, is this a confusing case. What to make of seals saying, yes, gallagher killed some people, but, no, he only stabbed others. Well, this is some made for tv drama that really, we wished tv cameras were in the courtroom for because it has so many juicy elements to it and surprises in the middle of trial. We heard two days ago that another navy seal admitted he was the one who caused the actual death this have young isis member and then yesterday, we heard testimony of gunshots from, or presumably from chief gallagher, but nobody saw him pull the trigger. It goes both ways, but it seems theres a pile of evidence against chief gallagher he was engaged in engagement with the enemy that was not necessarily authorized. It brings up a larger question, is this the navy trying to make a point here and trying to say, hey, were doing something to clean up some questionable behavior thats happened in the community over the years or is this one man who there really is a mountain of evidence again . Well, we put a tremendous amount of faith in our special forces operators. And theres a great deal of trust that goes into their missions and thats to abide by the rules of engagement and laws of Armed Conflict that they know well. These are professional war fighters so the expectations that they act in a manner that is very prudent is both wellfounded and something that has been expected for years. So i dont see this as some sort of show by the navy. This is much more a rational question that theyre asking, if he did these things hes accused of doing, hes a criminal. Leland and despite the fact that there is this testimony by somebody, according to the new york times, this fellow by the name of cory scott testified that he watched gallagher stab the prisoner in the neck, but the wound didnt appear to be life threatening, still, stabbing a prisoner in the neck, somebody already injured, that violates not only all sorts of rules of engagement, but far beyond that to Geneva Convention violations . Absolutely. What we have with petty officer scott coming in and testifying two days ago was the idea that he was the one who actually asphyxiated this young isis member. The allegation, that was a surprise, in the middle of trial, prosecutors didnt know that was coming, but he did admit that chief gallagher did actually stab this member in the neck just before that. That to me is still evidence of guilt. Leland only 30 seconds left and i want to put a bow on this. Timothy parlante, gallaghers Attorney Says any professional prosecutor would have dismissed this case several times over. Agree or disagree . I cant agree with that at all. I was a senior prosecutor and now im a military defense attorney. This case deserves to be in front of the jury. These are real questions that have a legitimate answer that we need in the public and the jury is the right place to get that. Leland well, the trial will continue as will our coverage of it. Welcome to americas news headquarters. Leland the president thing military force against iran is always on the table. Hi, david. He is at camp david, this is a handful of times he was in the campaign. And donald trump said he does not want to go to war, he want to dialogue. The error president called for rain airstrikes despite increased tension, they had options about retaliating, 150 people would be killed. 150 people for iran shooting down an unmanned drone didnt make sense. I dont want to kill hundred 50 of anything or anybody unless it is absolutely necessary and most people agree with what i am doing now. The leadership of iran, it is going to be a bad day for them. Hopefully they are smart and hopefully care for their people and not themselves. The president mentioned sanctions against iran, but most people are not aware of those sanctions when the president announced those sanctions yesterday on twitter but he says they are coming. We will start all over, we could have a deal with very quickly. If iran wants to become a wealthy nation, a prosperous nation, we will call it lets make iran great again. Reporter the specific rhetoric, talking about the economy in iran, something he did with north korea when meeting with kim jong un, having summit in singapore talking about how north korea seems to be a similar strategy with iran. I asked donald trump if he would consider meeting with iranian leadership, the president or the supreme leader, he said he did not answer that question but he is open to talking with people in iran because talking to iran is better than going to war. Leland the iranians are not interested in talking to us. Thanks. For more on this we bring in chief of staff, chairman of the institute for the study of war, retired 4star general jack keane. We dont have time to do this segment. The president said if the iranians behave badly they will have a bad day. They shot down one of our drones, they have harassed our ships and we havent struck. Why should they believe the president . This is the First Administration that is on Strategic Offensive against iran in 39 years. The maximum Pressure Campaign is first rate if you get into the specifics of it. It is designed to change irans behavior in the region and designed to change how iran treats its own people. That has got to be our strategic focus. They are trying to take us off that focus, disrupting the oil flow through the channel. Im not convinced the drone that was shot down with Something National leadership wanted. It is evidence they were not aware that was going to take place. Clearly the president saying i dont know if it was intentional. It may have been that. s decision not to strike was largely based on what he has told us. I taken at face value. The tradeoff between 150 lives in the drone in his mind is the us military structure so messed up the commander in chief didnt know until 10 minutes before with the casualty this is a process for sure. I dont have an issue with the decision. I have an issue with the process. The president should have been able to make that decision in a meeting when the risk was laid out and therefore given what we know now, 150 versus drone, 150 dead, he wouldnt have given the order to execute the strike. Congressman and national guard, called for strikes against the Iranian Regime because of the tanker mining incident and he said this about potentially flying in the strait of hormuz as if he was a pilot. I will put his quote on screen, essentially saying i would be worried being in the air because the iranian said nothing happens when we took a shot at a drone. Maybe if we took a shot at a plane nothing will happen as well. If they kill americans our responsibility is not significant. What we have is huge opportunity. We have got to see the strategic opportunity in front of us and stop focusing on should we strike or not strike . The president now because he has exercised restraint has leverage. He can go to the europeans, the asians, and say you have seen the restrained i am using, the provocative nature of what iran is doing. I need you to support my Strategic Offensive campaign. I want you involved in sanctions with me. France, england, germany, knockoff going around the sanctions making deals and go to the europeans at the European Council and say to the European Council the iranians are disrupting the oil flow in the region, that is a violation of international law. Lets come out and isolate iran, stay on the Strategic Offensive, dont get caught up in tactical stuff. He made an interesting point that iran is trying to knock us off the Strategic Offensive. May not have to say it publicly but what should be the president s redline . If blowing up a drone isnt a redline and doesnt dry us response, what behavior by the iranians has to draw a response . What will draw a response is any killing of americans. We are going to put together a package with our allies to keep the shipping lanes open. If iran attacks the package, whether it is our ships or coalition ships protecting the tankers going through, the administration will respond as reagan responded in the 1980s. Iran is threatening to go to enrichment beyond the minimal restriction. They are threatening to go to 20. If they did that, that is a redline but they wont do that. They are not stupid. They will gradually increase above 3. 6 and then say i will go back to 3. 6 but youve got to do business with me. The americans pulled out of the deal, you are still in the deal, i am still in the deal. How about accommodating me. These are chess players here. Leland they have been playing chess in iran for a long time. Thanks, good to see you. A shakeup at the top of the pentagon, donald trump announcing his intent to nominate mark esper to be the next secretary of defense. As acting secretary of defense Patrick Shanahan prepares to leave the department. Jillian turner joins us with more. Reporter the secretary of the army slated to become acting secretary of defense starting monday. Last night the white house announced donald trump hopes to make the secretary gig permanent. Esper served as Army Secretary for year and a half and the announcement of his appointment comes on the heels of Patrick Shanahans withdraw from consideration last tuesday. Mark esper, a highly rejected gentleman with a great career, tremendous talent, acting secretary of defense, he will do very well. The white house has been touting his resume, pointing to his qualifications and prudentials credentials, former vp of Government Relations firm working at the defense contractors working on senate committees. A doctorate in Public Policy from George Washington and a recipient of a dod metal, news the president hopes to make esper permanent went over like a ton of bricks with democrats on the Senate Armed Services committee. There is no Permanent Defense secretary. I imagine you think it is important at this moment to have one. Seems like mark asper is the most likely person to take that role. Would you vote to confirm him . I will review his record but im not inclined at this time. This change up comes at the same time it changes at the National Security council as well. The president s top russian in europe advisor will take down at the end of august and be replaced by tim morrison who joined the National Security council last year as an advisor for weapons of mass destruction. Both morrison and esper will hit the ground running at crucial moments in their respective portfolios. Jillian turner, thank you so much. The attorney for the estranged husband of missing connecticut mother Jennifer Dulos is speaking to fox news as a representative issued a new statement of the case. Jackie heinrich has the latest on this. Reporter it has now been 29 days since jennifer went missing but her estranged husband is maintaining his innocence, his attorney speaking to fox news saying if she was murdered he did not do it. The mother of 5 was last seen dropping off her kids at school, may 24th, missed two appointment later that day, never seen again. Police found traces of her blood mixed with her estranged husbands dna and her rental house and evidence of the clean up. They were arrested for tampering with evidence after they were caught on camera throwing away trash at 30 locations including a blood he sponge. His attorney is trying to cast doubt on his culpability. She recently moved the children out of state to new york in defiance of a court order so the custody fight, she was a troubled woman, angry at him as well as his anger at her. Reporter investigators have not charged anybody with jennifers murder because they havent found her body. Analysts say without that, it will be an uphill battle bringing a murder charge. In connecticut state history there have only been four murder convictions without a body. It can be claimed it was accidental and we pad extended all the steps, didnt mean to kill her. It is important they find the body but there is clearly a lot of evidence to indicate that he and his girlfriend are involved in the homicide of this poor woman. The family of that missing woman continuing to call for her safe return, a new statement saying each day passing intensifies the impact of the tragedy of jennifers children who have not seen her mother. The guiding presence in their lives in 28 days. Investigators are searching a trash facility in hopes of finding more evidence. They have also been pouring over footage from 800 cameras in hartford. Thank you for following the story. I have been covering the store for the last two weeks. Think about the work being done at this trash facility, there was word that he was going to end yesterday but state investigators came out and said theres a lot of work to be done at new numbers, 3035 tons of trash is what youre going through in a 15 hour workday every single day. Meanwhile you can imagine Family Members waiting for word. The attorney for the husband spoke out, went on the air. Pick a part of that soundbite, anything stand out . The thing that stands out to me when i went through the transcript, talking about the fact that first of all the police said they saw two people matching the discussion of the estranged husband and girlfriend. They, the police have not verified that but they believe it could be them. That is something that is very telling in terms of their involvement. But his Attorney Says she was troubled and trying to throw out stuff that might be going on with jennifer but that is stuff we dont know yet. Interesting to see what police now but are not saying. Life pictures out of colombia, vermont senator, 2020 president ial hopeful Bernie Sanders at the South CarolinaDemocratic Convention, among a number of the 2020 hopefuls, lets listen for a second. A campaign of energy and enthusiasm that substantially grows voter turnout, that gets young people, minorities and working people involved in the political process in a way we have never seen. That means not only do we attack the mc level of income and wealth inequality in america, in which three people own more wealth of that of bottom half of america, but we also take on the grotesque level of Racial Disparity in america. We recently celebrated juneteenth. 154 years after that day we see a racial gap that leaves the average black family with ten times less wealth than the average white family. We see the infant mortality rate in black communities more than double for white communities, we see young people, africanamericans graduating college 7000 more in debt than white graduates, we see black women making 61 of what weight men make. You know what . We are going to end that absurdity. We have a criminal Justice System plagued by racism. We have seen an increase in hate crimes including the horrific massacre at the emmanuel ame church in charleston. This is unacceptable and as president i will make it my priority not only to eliminate National Economic disparities but Racial Disparities once and for all. We are going to stop spending 80 billion a year on mass incarceration, we are going to crack down on police brutality, on primarily people of color. We are going to shut down private prisons and eliminate tax bails. We are going to pass congressman jim clyburns 10, 20, 30 legislation to invest in Distressed Community that for too long have been left behind. Bernie sanders on the stump at the South CarolinaDemocratic Convention. Elizabeth foreigns campaign selling out merchandise that says i am a war and democrat. They are trying to brand her as a different kind of democrat in the 2 dozen democrats running and on the stage a few minutes ago she explained why. I have been around this country the last 6 months and people across this nation understand it is time for big structural change in america. [applause] the time for small ideas is over. War and was very well received. Kamala harris told reporters she did not confront joe biden about his comments about being civil with segregationist even though she told me earlier in the week in washington she might because she thought biden was misguided. She didnt mention her biden critique on stage, to 0 in on donald trump instead. We have in this white house a president who says he wants to make America Great again. What does that mean . He wants to take us back to before schools were integrated . Does that mean he wants to take us back before the Voting Rights act was enacted . Does it mean he wants to take us back before the Civil Rights Act was enacted . Does he mean he wants to take us back before roe v wade was enacted . Because we are not going back. Most of the field was at the fish fry last night and the last man standing taking selfys until almost midnight was joe biden. He has a commanding lead on the field in South Carolina and he is going to be here late this afternoon. One of the last if not the last speaker but until he shows up all these democrat voters are hearing from a lot of potential alternatives for the front runner. Leland we will check back in with you. Thanks so much. A lot going on. Lets bring in the panel and kick it around, democratic strategists kevin shamus and founder and president of the fine strategies christian handley, welcome to you both. We were listening in a little bit. You guys listening to the speeches going on today. I want to talk about these 2020 candidates. A lot are attacking each other is to be expected. With you make so far . Im not disappointed, it is a little funny right now we have joe biden asking for an apology from a rival in the field, taking shots at each other is part of how this process works its way out but overall it has been civil so far. As we head and the first debate we will see more tension and more divisions. As we look at the latest polls and we want to put up numbers for all of us to look at of where we stand, joe biden gets 32 , their nominee preference, Bernie Sanders, the rest in single digits. So kevin, when we look at this after many Democratic Candidates take him on on comments on segregationist will he stay on top . He has a large advantage so those comments will probably impact him but the smart money is on maintaining that edge for at least another month or so. He has the second choice for most people, even people who narrowed down there field say they support senator harris or senator sanders. Biden is in the top 2 or 3. A good solid base of support because of name recognition. We will see. The comments will lead to some problems for him because he continues to make it worse by demanding an apology from cory booker, not acknowledging. I want to place and sound we have to share with you, joe biden insisting he doesnt need to apologize. Do you think that attitude will help or hurt him . Heres what he had to say. Are you going to apologize . Cory booker called for it . Corey should apologize. He knows better. There is not a racist bone in my body. Ive been involved in civil rights my whole career, period. Period. Period. Pretty defiant. He is. The back and forth demanding apology will not be a winning strategy, nobody wants to hear the battle of apologies. It is silly at this point demanding an apology. Biden should expect to be held to account for his record for what he has said and done. If hes going to bring up his past on civil rights his past is more checkered than he wants to portray in that statement. Demanding an apology in a campaign when part of the process is debating people, it is fighting a little bit. It was going to be back and forth. Why are we talking about apologizing . Why not hold people to account and have these debates and stop asking for it. What about what peter doocy was reporting, he hasnt been on stage yet and we are hearing from so many others . Does that help or hurt him . What will people see after this weekend . He was at representative cliburns fish fry. A lot of big players were there but this convention has shown a light on senator harris. Seems her remarks were well received. Senator harris has become a star in the judiciary, brought that energy so more so than hurting biden, more about who can take advantage of the stage at the convention and make a name for themselves and that will be important in the debates too. We will continue to talk to you both on that. Thank you. Leland donald trump promising new sanctions against iran. Will be enough to change the ayatollahs mind . President ial candidate Kirsten Gillibrand on the stump at the Democratic Convention, one of several, more than 20 Democratic Candidates attending the event today. We are monitoring it, peter doocy has highlights as they happen. World leaders calling for calls between the us and iran after donald trump canceled a retaliatory strike on iran just minutes before lunch to break down the challenges the Trump Administration is facing as they deal with iran, National Security and Foreign Affairs analyst, great to have you in studio. A lot to get to. What were the iranian trying to accomplish . Thats the question. Lets look at the first stage, dropped drones on saudi arabia. Stage 2, Trump Administration mobilized b52s, sent aircraft carriers, the shot against that drone is an attempt by iran to draw us into a confrontation have time. It could be a mistake tactically speaking but they were aiming at us. Could have been in another place. The goal is to engage in a limited fashion. We are not ready for a big war with iran in the middle east. That would provoke a ceasefire. The ceasefire would stop us from mobilizing. You think risk aversion puts the National Security at risk or in danger . One thing people are talking about as the best way to deal with iran diplomatically . Whether it is backing the opposition, all of it at the same time. The president showed he ordered missiles against and hes not afraid of doing this, he needs to have a plan. He was told that was not needed, basically if you want to engage now we are not ready. This is the question we have been asking. Russia is watching, north korea, china, what message does this send . I have in speaking with many decisionmakers and media people in the arab world and beyond. The media and Public Opinion is concerned this is america not responding to the attack. They understand these are voting when incident so that our apparatus is intact. Donald trump wants to ease tensions with iran while John Bolton Mike pompeo could be a tiebreaker of some kind, going into that. How do you see that configuration working together as a plan . A lot of equations, some talking points, some people it is not like that. There are multiple scenarios. The main decisionmaker is the president. Succeeding and isolating iran, we dont iran to stop us from that isolation. As we talk about the us facing global problems without a chief of the pentagon. Where do you make of where we are . To have a secretary of defense at this point in time wont change everything. A titanic institution, the secretary of defense, the best one possible, this will not stop us understanding what the iranians are doing and asking against them if they do crossed the red lines. Always good to have your perspective, thanks for being with us today. Donald trump and the chinese president sit down at the g 20 summit. Will be enough to stave off a trade war . We will see dimensions china. Donald trump at camp david in meetings with senior advisers right now. Next week he heads to japan for the g 20 summit in a meeting with the chinese president to everett more tariffs in a trade war. Strategic international studies, former undersecretary of commerce bill ryan. Appreciate it as always. Where are we right now . They shake and from a big smiles. He doesnt impose tariffs. And that happens. This time it is all consumer rise. Your phones go up. We have a significant consumer impact. Talk to somebody who was part of the us team, they specifically worked on 10 tariffs to not affect consumer goods. Yes. Didnt help our manufacturers. What that meant is the price of components went up and the chinese retaliated. Consumers didnt notice. What do you make as we read the tea leaves, the Vice President has suspended or put off his chinese policy speech that was going to be tough on the chinese . They dont want to rock the boat. One of the problems, right now both president s believe the other is in a weaker position. That doesnt leave you to an agreement. Trump feels we are hurting the chinese more than us. Xi jinping feels they can outlast us. He doesnt have any election, we do. Funny how that works. Gives him advantages. At the end of the day they need to do something. Leland excellent point in terms of how the president is looking at this, the chinese paying us billions, us companies are paying billions of dollars. Listen to how the president spun this before he headed to camp david. What article came out this morning the tariffs are having very little effect on drugs going up and in some cases no effect, the countrys the products come from. The first half is true. The tariffs so far have focused on partial components so he is right. If he adds more, you are going to get clothing, laptops, phones. Some are reporting apple was trying to negotiate on this, i phones were going to come out in september. 300 Different Companies trying to negotiate on this, people coming and saying leave me out and see what happens. Hard to say. He has run on the second half. People will pay the tariffs. The person receiving the goods when it comes to the country. If they are a big retailer, a lot of market power, they may leland the first time you thought of having a lot of market power, walmart. Walmart is a better example. They might force the chinese manufacturer to lower his price. Walmart might be part of the challenge to keep prices down. Leland what about walmarts stock price . They are not happy with this and it kills companies more, the uncertainty, not knowing what will happen next. Leland markets hate uncertainty in the stock market is at an alltime high. That is what the president is talking about. Becomes an agreement with a coop a year from now the chinese dont have the agreement and it wont be a good agreement. Chinese reneging on an agreement . Blasphemy. When it happened history repeats itself, we will have you back to talk about it. Is officials investigate the death of 11 american tourists, popular toxicology experts, what the similarities are on what that could mean coming up. I want it that way. I cant believe it. As you look at this growing and troubling case, what do you think is going on . This is devastating loss of life, we are up to 11 now. 11 people. The cause is completely unknown at this point. Certainly the cluster of these deaths would speak to potential exposure, toxic toxins can affect the skin, skin absorption or you can inhale them.
