The president says he wants more live speeches than we heard last week at the dnc. The auditorium will be the hub for the convention where some of the speeches will be delivered. Reporter i just had a conversation with a white house senior staffer and insisted that the real difference between what we saw last week with the democrats and what we expect and anticipate seeing from the republicans at the rnc is a message of positiveity. You heard lucas allude to it. And the charge is simply this. Democrats, they argue, spent last week really criticizing and complaining about the country whereas the republicans hope to focus on the way forward. A message of renewal and rebirth and thats really what they hope to communicate to the american people. Hogan gibley was talking about it earlier today on Fox News Channel. The democrats we saw for the last several days has been talking about how horrible america is, we are inherently evil and the cause of the worlds problems. Thats not the way we see america. Its the greatest idea ever realized. The president is going to talk about how this is the land of opportunity, the land of heroes, the land of promise, the land of greatness. Arthel two major storms expected to hit central gulf coast this week, Tropical Storm marco is near hurricane strength as it swirls over the gulf of mexico and it could make landfall in eastern louisiana tomorrow. Tropical storm laura now over haiti, could also become a hurricane. Parts of louisiana including new orleans, now under a hurricane watch. We have fox Team Coverage, phil keating is in key largo, florida. Were going to start with meteorologist adam klotz tracking the twin storms. Adam. Hey, arthel. Yeah, a very unique system is what were looking at right now. Marco is a little closer, nearly a hurricane right now, winds at 70 miles an hour, spinning in the gulf of mexico. Likely making landfall by tomorrow afternoon so this has sped up from some of the original forecasts. Theres the track running up along the louisiana coast. What youre going to see is ultimately both of these storms are at least potentially going to be making landfall in a similar location. That could be a big problem. Jumping to Tropical Storm laura, spinning over haiti. This one going to take a little longer but ultimately running to a similar location. So once it runs over some of the tropical islands it gets into the gulf of mexico, able to heat up and warm up very quickly and suddenly you see a path that is running up along the gulf coast so louisiana, possibly getting up to a category 2 storm. This is the stronger of the two tropical systems were paying attention to. These are our current forecast tracks. As you know he with these systems, theres plenty of room over the next couple days, the next 12 hours for this to shift a little bit. They could end up right on top of each other, at least where the paths go. That would be a worst case scenario. The ground would be saturated. The second storm would be able to do more damage. No surprise, Tropical Storm watches, warnings, hurricane watches in some locations as we begin to prepare for these storms. Im going to leave you with precipitation models. This is from the first original storm. You see some of that rain really piling up around new orleans. But then if you get another hit, suddenly you talk about a lot more rain running up just a little farther off towards the west. Again, arthel, as i throw this back to you, these could end up right on top of each other of. Theres a little bit of time to watch that occur. The worst of Tropical Storm laura should impact probably the lower keys, key west, sometime tomorrow throughout the day. State of emergency is in effect for the entire county, monroe county, meaning anybody out living on a boat or in a mobile trailer is supposed to get out and up onto the mainland. Laura has blown through puerto rico with several inches of rain and steady winds. Right now its raining and blowing across the Dominican Republic and haiti. In a kim hours its forecast to move west, northwest through the length of cuba before making it out into the gulf of mexico and hitting those warm waters and strengthening into a category one or two hurricane. That other Tropical Storm of course, thats threatening the same region from texas really to the Florida Panhandle is Tropical Storm marco. Its winds are 70 miles an hour right now so it is almost a hurricane as we speak and its expected to turn into a hurricane in a few hours to a day as well. Monroe county emergency planners are going to meet this afternoon and decide whether or not theyre going to open of up a hurricane shelter down in key west but for most of florida, almost the entire state, neither of these storms is really much of a threat so up in the mainland, miami, there hasnt been that usual rush on gasoline stations and Publix Grocery stores and hardware stores. The real threat is where these two storms are coming. Which is louisiana in particular, east coast of texas, as well as coastal alabama and mississippi and maybe even into pensacola. Back to you. Arthel meanwhile, on the west coast, dozens of fastmoving wildfires have scorched a million acres in california and the weather could make things even worse for firefighters. President trump issuing a major disaster declaration to get federal funds to the state. Christina coleman is live in las Pacific Palisades area with more. Christina. Reporter well, arthel, California Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement yesterday, thanking President Trump for his partnership on this effort. Its expected to really help the people here in california. This declaration will help people in counties affected by the fires, be eligible for housing and unemployment assistance and crisis counseling. Fires from the lnu lightning freenesconference have scorched0 acres. Its now the second largest fire in the states recorded history. And the scu lightning complex fire in santa clara and near by counties is the Third Largest fire in the states history. Theres been nearly 600 fires in california since last week and together theyve burned nearly 1 million acres statewide and many of the fires were sparked by lightning hitting incredibly dry areas in northern california. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate statewide and hundreds of structures have been destroyed, also more thunderstorms are expected for today in the bay area, which could bring more dry lightning and gusty winds, obviously worsening fire conditions out here for crews working around the clock to get these fires under control. Arthel christina, i understand theres been some dramatic pictures of two firefighters in particular rescued by helicopter friday night from the woodward fire thats raging in northern california. What are you hearing from the tactical officers that helped in the rescue . Reporter arthel, were hearing from this officer who is being called a hero, apparently these firefighters didnt realize how close they were to these fastspreading flames. Fortunately, they were able to be rescued friday night. All right, guys, im going to get you out of here, okay. One of you needs to put this on. Its like a jacket, okay . All right. Reporter Deputy Sheriff and tactical flight officer chris hoss was attached to the end of a rope that was attached to a helicopter, allowing him to help rescue the trapped firefighters from a ridge line in the woodward fire. Take a listen. The butterflies were there until we took off. Then it truly its just game mode. You know you have to do it. I think the real heroes are the guys, especially the firefighters and our patrol deputies that are literally out in the field on the edge. Where i was on the edge of the fire for a minute last night, theyre doing it for days on out. Reporter hes so incredibly humble there. Arthel as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle sound the alarm on delays in mail delivery, theres another concern about voting by mail this fall. Npr analyzed primary election data from most states. It found at least 550,000 mail ballots were rejected. Most of them from firsttime absentee voters. That doesnt include figures from about 20 states. Its already much more than the number rejected in the 2016 general election. Why is it happening . Npr reports that in many cases signatures are missing or dont match voter records or ballots you arrive too late. They have lost money. Theyve been inpacted by the virus. And workers have delivered the mail. They deliver our medicine. They deliver our packages and even the bills. This bill is only a bandaid bill, a shortterm fix, wont solve the underlying problems. Ive been saying this for a long time. It needs reform. Arthel eric thats don young. Hes one of 26 republicans who voted alongside the democrats yesterday to approve that 25 billion bill of emergency funds for the Postal Service. The president has called it a, quote, democratic hoax, saying the post office doesnt need the money amid claims of election tampering by republicans. Well, those charges says the white house are, quote, an overreaction to sensationalized media reports. Joining us now is alena tren. Weve got the bill. Whats going to happen tomorrow . Were going to see a lot more of what we saw on friday when the postmaster general, louis dejoy, testified before a senate committee. This is still a massive controversy. We know that the house passed this bill yesterday and those 26 republicans that did vote with democrats will definitely be a big subject of conversation tomorrow as well. But its really going nowhere. The bill is going to die in the senate. Weve seen Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell say he will not pass a standalone bill on usps funding and the president has also threatened to veto it if it ends up at his desk. Its not going anywhere. The conversation is going to continue. But the concerns are very real. I think if you look ahead to the november election, more americans than ever before in history are planning to vote by mail, given the coronavirus pandemic and so making sure that the ballots do get in on time and that theres no reforms being made right now which dejoy did say he would suspend some of the planned changes until after the election but making sure that everything runs smoothly so that people who want to vote and vote safely from their homes are able to do so. Eric how come one of the criticisms was there was no consideration of the coronavirus in this bill by the democrats, the republicans say they have 10 billion bill for the post office and 300 in checks that they need. You know, why did they not they say this is for coronavirus. But it wasnt addressed. Right. So this is i mean, as a reporter who covers capitol hill and these leaders every day, its been a very frustrating process, seeing whats going on in these stimulus talks. Lawmakers on both sides of pennsylvania avenue are still very far apart on what they think is needed in this next stimulus bill. Now, the white house and republicans argue that they think theres agreement on some things like 10 billion for more money for the Postal Service. Democrats want more. They agree it needs more money. They agree that they want to get stimulus checks out and so republicans are saying, we saw mark meadows say this today on the sunday shows that why dont we just pass these all measures now in one bill and continue to work on other things. Democrats argue that what republicans and the white house want is not enough, that it needs to go much further. It is a bit of mixed messaging. We did see democrats were pushing the stand diss alone bill on Postal Service and the republicans saying they dont want to do that. Messaging is all over the board. I think theres a long way to go to make sure that any of this funding actually gets passed in both chambers. Eric you mentioned once it gets to the senate Mitch Mcconnells turned thumbs down, heres what he said. He said the president has made it clear he will not sign the speakers partisan stunt into law and the senate will absolutely not pass standalone legislation for the Postal Service while American Families continue to go without more relief and heres Jared Kushner talking about this issue this morning. The president wants a fair election. We have a way of voting thats been tried and true for many years. People are comfortable with it. The president tweeted the other day, if you can protest in person, you can vote in person. I think theres a notion here dr. Fauci said its safe to vote in person. What were seeing now is, if you look at the ballot harvesting that happened in california, theres a lot of dirty things that happen in politics. Eric and then wait for tomorrow, caroline malone, the congresswoman from new york, shes the chairwoman of the Oversight Committee and louis dejoy is going to be in front of malone tomorrow morning and man oh, man the malone, siraj patel race in manhattan, the president said they should do it over again. 65,000 mailin votes, mailed in for the primary, 12,005 a hundred were rejected. Patel hasnt conceded. What does that say about the state of ballots, thats not the mail. No, its going to be its an unprecedented thing that were facing. I think you just showed Jared Kushner speaking this morning about how the vote by mail system has worked in years past. This is in the we never faced a pandemic like we are right now and that really is going to get in the way of these votes and like in new york, there were a lot of issues of ballots. It will happen again in november. Its expected that were seeing technical difficulties already with the mail. And so thats where everyone agrees that there needs to be more funding to help handle this massive influx. But its not going to help that. There is this partisan infighting back and forth. They need to come to the table and find an agreement.
