The president s defense team and he appeared on Fox News Sunday earlier this morning. The legal argument is that sense they didnt allege any impeachable offense, since they only alleged abuse of pow he, obstruction of congress, those are vague openended criteria of exactly the sort the framers had rejected back in the constitutional convention. Even if true, they did not allege impeachable offenses. So there cant be constitutionally authorized impeachment. Eric the trial resumes tomorrow. For a preview, Mark Meredith is live on capitol hill. Reporter good morning, eric. Senators have the day off. The impeachment trial will resume tomorrow. We heard from the president s lawyers. They gave a fairly short presentation. We expect monday to be a bit longer. We heard on saturday from president s lead lawyer, Pat Cipollone who said that the democrats are trying to impair the president going into the 2020 election and accused them of trying to reverse the 2016 election. They are reacting to the opening arguments. I literally dont know how you can sit over there and listen, when you hear the president s lawyers, they raised fact questions. They say well the facts arent there. I want to hear from the men to wrote the Founding Fathers musical, to hear from the man in the room where it happens. The key thing came out this week the opportunity to hear both sides of the story. Understand a lot of things house managers brought up. They didnt read the full sentence. People should track and get both sides of this story. Reporter the senate may decide whether to compel additional witnesses to testify. It is unclear when the vote may happen. Regardless the lawmakers may decide those arguing the case feel confident in their presentation so far. We have proved overwhelmingly they were leveraging hundreds of millions of dollars ukraine needed in military aid and a deeply soughtafter Oval Office Meeting to coerce ukraine helping him cheat. They completely failed to meet that high constitutional standard and therefore it would be unconstitutional to remove a president based on the allegations made against him in the articles of impeachment. Reporter we tried to get an idea how long exactly opening arguments would last but sources on president s legal team would not elaborate other than it would be shorter than democrat last week. The iowa caucus eight days away. We have four Democratic Senators going to be here in washington for most of the week as opposed to campaigning on the campaign trail. Iraq, eric, never a dull moment on capitol hill. Eric thank you, mark. Arthel well bring in anita kumar, associate editor at politico. Lets pick up where mark left off. President team is having truncated arguments compared to house managers. Will this strategy work in the defense teams favor, and could brevity, a speedily trial lead to a wrap by weeks end . You heard a lot of republican senators, they wanted the house side would been more efficient. They were looking for shorter arguments. They will still be there several hours laying out the argument both the president didnt do what the house said and it is not a impeachable defense but what youre hearing from senators on both sides they were pretty much where they were before the trial even started. There are only a couple senators we dont really know where they stand. Most everyone is exactly where we thought they were about a week ago. Arthel right now, bear with me i have some stats i want to share with everybody. Axios an impact impeachment is having on 2020 fundraisers. The rnc says it attracted more than 600,000 new donors since september. It also recruited more than 100,000 new volunteers through the antiimpeachment, stop the Madness Campaign website. The Biden Campaign says its average digital revenue per day more than doubled during impeachment compared to the weeks before. Anita for further expire son, lets rewind to president clintons impeachment. His Approval Ratings shot up from 60 range in early 1998 to 73 during his impeachment in december of 1999, according to gallop. Get back to present day, President Trumps net approval numbers actually approved in 31 states between september and december as reported by axios. They improved by at least five point in iowa, utah, maine, montana, and new mexico. But President Trumps net approval declined in key state as well including michigan and texas. Here is my question for you, anita, who ends up politically stronger on the other side of impeachment . It is a great question. So interesting to listen to President Trumps numbers. This president hasnt really changed. He has small dips one way or another, up or down. He has really been consist 10 three years no matters what happens, what scandal, what controversy is happening but really interesting what you said about those hardcore supporters, about the Trump Campaign and Biden Campaign and others really capitalizing on impeachment. You have seen them talk about impeachment. Youve seen the supporters of theirs really get energized, give them money, donate time and effort but what the real question is, what do those people in the middle think . That small group, those independents, moderates, that are going to decide really this election and it is really unclear what they think. The president s team is really capitalizing, really thinking they will be tired of this every day that this trial is on tv, it is hard to follow, it is too much. They think people have tuned out. They feel like theyre going to win this in the end because people are not paying attention out in the country. Arthel but as you know when the trial end the arguments will continue. So who has a better chance of winning in the court of Public Opinion . Is it the house managers or the president s defense team . Well unlessing in really changes remember the president will probably be acquitted here. So he will go on the campaign trail to talk about how he was vindicated and he won. But adam schiff on sunday shows said something very interesting today. He said that the president cant claim he is exonerated unless there are witnesses in this trial because it wouldnt have been a fair trial. It is interesting that the democrats are starting to use that. They know what the president is going to do. They will use that as a way to say we need witnesses in this trial. But here, look, it is january. It is going to, a lot of things will change before november. A lot of issues will come up. A lot depends on that, particularly things like the economy, how the president capitalizes how that is doing. There are a lot of questions still to be answered. Arthel really quickly, what will you be focusing on this week, anita . I really be looking to see what the president s team says tomorrow and then into tuesday if they go to that because we havent heard their full explanation. We heard, maybe a dozen different messages from the president himself but we havent heard their legal argument. Why is this not impeachable and why do they say he didnt do what the democrats say they did . We havent heard that. Democrats and republicans in the senate looking to really see what they say. Arthel quickly do his supporters need to hear that . To your earlier point, it is not about his supporters but about the undecided . There is really only a few senators this will matter to, right . Only four or five senators waiting to see. We know what will happen with the trial. Whether this trial would be prolonged by witnesses that could be messy for the president , that is the big question, will there be witnesses or not. Arthel anita, we look forward to speaking with you again. Thank you. Thank you. Eric centers for Disease Control confirming a third case of the coronavirus right here in the United States. In the latest fox news poll more than half registered voters gave the economy highest marks with 55 describes it as good or excellent of the last time that many voters felt positive about the economy was 19 years ago. Those positive marks have not translated to a boost in the president s job approval though, despite the bulk of voters giving him credit for the good economy. 45 of voters approve of President Trumps Job Performance for the second straight month while his disapproval rating inched up by a point. When it comes to handling every other issue polled, more voters disapprove than approve on issues, guns, immigration, Foreign Policy, health care and government spending. They can thank young voters for a lot of those wins. The question now, will be able to get the young people to show up at the polls again this time around, help them in the primaries and also help them take the oval office in 2020 in november . People that we have spoken to, they say absolutely. I think it is very common that people say young voters are apathetic and dont care about these issues. Often times that is a misunderstanding why young people are feeling hardened to the system. They are not appet thick about the issues. This as the United States now is working to get our fellow americans out of that city of wuhan where the outbreak began last month. The coronavirus has reportedly killed 56 people, all of them in china. There are reported nearly 2000 confirmed cases in 12 countries now. Three of them right here at home in the u. S. One in california, the other in Washington State and illinois. Doctors in illinois described that patients symptoms. He had coldlike symptoms, shortness of breath, fever. Many times would present just like a cold, just look like a cold or flu. The patient is, is communicating well. Is not in distress. Eric that is very good news. What should we look out for . The dean of the National School of the topical medicine at Baylor University in houston. He is also a professor of the department of pediatrics and molecular virology and microbiology. Doctor, do you think the coronavirus can be contained here in our country . Were looking at two very different scenarios. Central china right now is facing a very dire Public Health situation. These numbers will go up dramatically. In the u. S. Im far less worried. Well certainly see more cases in the coming days and weeks but wont see anything in the United States like were seeing in Central China right now. Eric so far all the cases in the u. S. And elsewhere i understand from people who were in wuhan. Got on an airplane, they went to france or went to, came back to the United States. Do you expect that, those people will spread or, that authorities can basically narrow it down and keep those people isolated so it doesnt spread here . Well, im hopeful that well be able to isolate them so it doesnt spread. The big unknown right you now, yesterday the Central Government in china released information saying that people are infectious with this virus before they show symptoms. That is not been confirmed by scientists here in the United States, but if that holds up, that is going to present a tough situation because it means anybody who has been on the plane with any of those individuals flying into the United States are potentially exposed. So were still in a steep learning curve about this virus. We try to extrapolate from what we learned about sars and merz which are serious coronavirus. This makes it important we accelerate the development of a vaccine and that is what were doing at National School of tropical medicine, Baylor College of medicine and Childrens Hospital were in a consortium to develop a new vaccine we hope to accelerate pretty quickly. Eric how soon do you think the vaccine can be ready and can it work, and the sars vaccine youve been working on can it applied to the coronavirus . You hit hit perfectly. We developed a coronavirus sars vaccine that looked good in animals to challenge infections. We know a lot of similarities between this sars vie rose and this coronavirus. We hope potentially it can cross protect. We have to accelerate studies showing it is safe in people and that it will also work. Hopefully we move it out over the next couple months. Eric what should our viewers look out for . We heard the doctor in illinois say starts with a common cold. How do you know if it is this or you have influenza or the flu . What should people do are at home . You asked a very important question and remember when this is happening. It is happening at peak flu season. So you will have a lot of people Walking Around with fever, with upper respiratory symptoms. I think possibly the one differentiator is this beta coronavirus goes deep into the lungs and causes serious shortness of breath. That may be a tipoff. There is a lot of flu right now. It is all the more reason to make sure youre up to date on your flu vaccination. Eric they can test you if you have the flu, obviously . Absolutely. But you know if youre protected against flu and you develop severe respiratory symptoms, then it may be something else. Again, i think were not were going to see increase in number of cases in the u. S. It is not going to be anything near what were seeing in china. Eric finally, how can you protect yourself . People have masks like this, for example. I seen people wear masks here in streets of new york, recently Walking Around. Washing your hands a lot. Even the flu can be transmitted through a doorknob, canned dropped here . Youre exactly right. Any steps you would ordinarily take to avoid getting the flu would probably work against this beta coronavirus. So wash your hands as often as possible. A mask, depends how you wear it. What type of masks. Masks can have some protective effect but it is modest. So, given the fact that there is not a lot of beta coronavirus transmission in the United States, focus on steps you protect your family against getting the flu. Eric doctor, very good advice for our viewers. Thank you. Good luck getting vaccine done and well defeat the coronavirus. Thank you. Thank you so much. Kevin . Reporter good afternoon, arthel. Congratulations on your ls tigers. It has been a while sense we had a chance to chat. This is another thread of a story that we continue to follow. That recording may shed a bit of light about thinking about the former ambassador marie yovanovitch. Because of its brevity, it is difficult, arthel to assess the context and tone that the president struck while suggesting that disloyal yovanovitch should be let go, which is his right as president. White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham doesnt mean the president knew or met lev parnas. Regardless, the desire to 86 any ambassador is his prerogative. The president sits at many, many roundtables and dinners with people he doesnt know. You remember president zelensky said there was a problem with the ambassador, not supporting the president s policies. If the president hears that, he will turn to somebody next to him to say lets get her out of there. That is perfectly in line with anything he leaks to do. Reporter Stephanie Grisham on earlier on media buzz. Impeachment, 5644 voters think senate should remove President Trump from office. 81 , most republicans did i agree. 84 , should be a bit of context, the poll is weighted 4842 with democrats over republicans which is thought to reflect their overall numbers nationwide. Air strike that took out the countrys top general, soleimani. Foreign minister javad zarif told a major weekly that iran is open to direct talks but he says only if President Trump makes the first move, saying quote, for us it doesnt matter who is sitting in the white house. What matters is how they behave. The Trump Administration can correct its past, lift the sanctions and come back to the negotiating table. Were still at negotiating table. Theyre the ones who left. Director at institute of policy strategy at Carnegie Mellon and former advisor to secretary of state mike pompeo. Chiron, what are the chances u. S. Drops sanctions against iran in order to sit down at the table with them . I cant imagine under President Trump the chances are very high, eric, but, i think that was a fascinating interview in the german magazine with the foreign minister of iran zarif. He kind of showed his hand. Sanctions are the problem for them. The economic squeeze not just from the u. S. Under maximum pressure campaign. But also the fact that the europeans, the e3 as theyre called, who have not exactly agreed with the u. S. Approach, they too have found themselves in a standoff on Economic Relief for iran. So everywhere it turns, it is finding it difficulty with its economic trading relationships with countries that matter for its survival. So i think it is a cry for help, actually. Eric yeah. Seems that theyre getting desperate, that the Trump Administration policies are really working, opposite than what happened in the past. They are and where iran tends to be, i wont say strong, but where it has been consistent over the last who years, but in more recent years, is in trying to create a narrative that the United States is engaged in economic terrorism, that the United States is the problem in the region. It is becoming more difficult, even for politician like zarif to make that case. You know, he has been on the scene in iranian politics for 30 years, for the better part of the 40 years of the islamic republic, and he is finding it difficult to make the argument in the region because not just the maximum pressure campaign, but also the maximum diplomacy campaign, that the United States is undertaking. Eric he went to San Francisco state. He is a charmer. As a reporter i had lunch with him a number of years ago at the iranian residence here on fifth avenue and even tweeted at us at fox news and at the president. Here is what zarif tweeted out. Real donald trump is better advised to base his Foreign Policy comments and decisions on facts rather than fox News Headlines or his farsi translator. Viewed, i have a couple questions for you, will iran stop being number one state sponsor of terrorism in the world . Will iran stop supporting terrorist groups like hezbollah and hamas and others . Will iran stop the obscene carnage it is committing in syria . Stop executing people that support opposition troops. Stop grieving families funerals. Dont launch attacks against neighbors and u. S. Allies . In one word, will iran respect human rights, behave as full member of International Community . Kiron. Did i miss something . That is a lot but that is the whole story. And that is why President Trump in 2018 pulled out of the iran nuclear deal. When you list reality of iran as a human rights abuser, its geopolitical objectives that dont serve the middle east and broader world well, you understand that iran is backed into a corner and its real option is to come to the negotiating table with no preconditions. They have got to make the first move. Not President Trump as mr. Zarif has asserted. Eric there is the message to javad zarif. And way forward. Thankthank you for your insight. Thank you. Eric arthel. Arthel not a typical k9 program. Police in one town are changing the way they walk the beat, pairing patrol officers with dogs from local shelters. Why they say it is a winwin.
