But it certainly raises again the issue of the complexity of the allegiances in syria, in iraq, and why the United States must tread very carefully into this conflict. But another one is the one stated by the secretary of defense and secretary of state with very powerful language over the last few days that we may have no choice other than to take on this isis group and destroy them. Some of the words that have been used by cabinet members are just that strong. These are not just groups of terrorists. Theyre theo accurate tick impearlists. They believe got is on their side and you and i deserve to be crucified or buried alive. They want to control every aspect of what people say and think, not just what they do. They are very much they need a country from which to run things and thats their caliphate that they are establishing in syria and iraq. So its a movement, a Major Movement within the muslim world. These strong statements from the administration that youve mentioned from secretary of state kerry and also from defense secretary, seem on indicate a bit of a debate going on within the administration. And that he set the tone by his hesitancy in dealing with syria. And his hesitancy on various aspects of this in the middle east. There are a number of things we could do without putting troops on the ground to conduct combat operations. We might have a few cia, a few special forces, and we did that successfully against afghanistan early after 9 11. And how confident can we be in funding some of the moderate groups in syria . Im always worried of the shifting allegiances in that part of the world. Absolutely. We cant be all that confident. Things change. But, look, we allied for three years and eight months during world war ii with the man who up until then was historys greatest murderer, joseph stalin. And after the war when russians rolled in eastern europe, they rolled in on wheels that in detroit. But we needed him in order to defeat hitler. So this means its a this is a fairly large earthquake but not as large as the low ma pree ya ta earthquake in 1989. That earthquake had about 30 times more energy. I read that this is a fairly shallow quake. What is the significance of that . It was about 6 miles deep, which is fairly typical of this region, actually. One of the effects of the depth is that it was felt most strongly in sort of a small area around napa. And then it was felt through a broader area of california, but not with as strong a shaking. Many victims have describe add waving feeling. Does that say anything to you about what might have caused this or what it means . Typically a larger earthquake like this will tend to have a long rolling motion like waves on a sea where as the smaller earthquake will have a short, jolting shocking moment to it. But the larger earthquakes can produce these big rolling motions. I see. Tell me what if anything we can prognosticate from this . Just based on what weve experienced with other magnitude 6 earthquakes around the world, we can make some estimates of what we should expect for aftershocks. We expect to keep having aftershocks for the next few weeks, if not months or more. But the rate will decrease through time. Were expecting most of the aftershocks like today and tomorrow and trailing off. It seems to me theres been an uptick in seismic activity. We had this threat of a volcano in iceland. Then in the San Francisco area. There have been many others in recent days and months. Can you draw any conclusion from that . We think its more that when when two earthquakes happen near in time to each other, people really notice that in a way that if a single et quake happens elsewhere in the world, maybe theres nothing to connect it to. They dont appear to be correlated over the earth in a big way, like they are correlated of course in in the way that an earthquake will have aftershocks, but were not concerned that theres any any big uptick in worldwide earthquake activity. Three are critical, including a child. Four mobile homes burned as well. These are old brick buildings. The facade is coming off in some cases. About 16 red tagged by the county, condemned for the time being. There are 16 water lines that have burst. Theyre being worked on as well. It was shallow, about 7 miles down. Theyre saying thats why it was felt over this large area. 2 million affected as you said there. The epicenter near napa. But it was felt in palo alto, even as far south as san jose. You say youre 75 miles from the epicenter. Is there damage in your neck of the woods . No damage here. They did have to check all the lines. No trains are running into the stadium just as a safety precaution. Sad to see what happened in napa.
