aim is. and what can be a fresh clue emerge s in the search for flight 370. more satellite data turns up pointing to one of the most unexpectable spots in the world. we will have a live update. "america's news headquarters live" starts right now. first australia and then china and now france is providing new satellite data that could indicate debris from the missing jetliner. it is in the same remote part of the indian ocean. david piper is live with the latest on the search. hello, david. >> hi. yes, the malaysian authorities say france has informed them that satellites have spotted objects floating in the southern indian ocean. there have been no images so far and the french foreign ministry say objects were found in the radar. the search has ended for the day in the southern indian ocean. planes from australia and u.s. were involved in the operation as well as australian naval ship. visibility was said to be poor early eon because of fog. they have been making a four-hour journey to the search area which is about 1,500 miles southwest of australia. the massive search area has been split into two now to help coordinate the search. much focused on a large object sighted on satellite. a small commercial aircraft also reported yesterday seeing small objects floating in the ocean including a pallett. australia's prime minister remains hopefulal if there is anything out there they will find it. >> it is still too early to be definite. obviously we have had a number of very credible leads. and there is increasing hope, no more than hope, no more than hope, that we might be on the road to discovering what did happen. >> reporter: and the australian-led search is getting some much-needed help. two chinese planes have arrived in perth as have two from japan. the search has widened from the north and south. >> thank you so much. the u.s., of course, also helping to try help solve the mystery. in addition to helping search for the plane the fbi is analyzing data from the flight simulator belonging to the captain of the plane. >> the chairman of the house committee said the hard drive and simulator are under review. on fox news sunday congressman mccall says even though files may have been deleted the fbi is working to retreat them. >> we all delete files. the question is what was deleted and can that be evidence of a route taken in this case? that is all under review. there are many theories floating around out there. none, in my opinion, connect all the dots at this point in time. that is why we have an investigation on going. >> while the massive search continues other american lawmakers are expressing frustration with the malaysians for lack of openness and for spending way too much time focusing search on the northern route. says time was wasted searching in that region. although a range of resources are searching a remote area of the globe one says many more assets are needed to assist immediately. >> this is probably going to be a very long search unless we luck out and one of these hears the pinger and we localize it quickly. >> today the president's security adviser tries to emphasize the positive. the search, says you have countries working together in ways they have not done so before. 15 days after malaysian airlines flight 370 vanished blinken says there is no prevailing theory about what happened to the plane. several say what is most likely and probable is that it crashed into the indian ocean. >> the search for answers continues. thank you. as the stories unfold you have seen images of families grieving and desperate for answers. they are stuck in limbo in many ways including legal matters. aviation attorney and pilot joins us to delve into this a little bit. thank you for your time. based on what you have heard thus far, do you have a theory? >> well, i think everybody has a little bit of a theory. i think everybody is correct in saying that all the dots haven't been connected yet. you really still can't pin down to a specific theory. the information is starting to come out. i think there is consensus gathering around the southern route. it seems to be supported by all these sightings by satellites. so i think we have that much of a foundation to go on but we still need to go from there to finding out why the nation -- and try to get the black boxesl skpair you have to find the wreckage area based on where you find sporadic wreckage. >> there has been much made of the communications systems that would have been working on the plane. the system which pings off satellites and a transponder which would have worked off ground radar. it appears they were disabled. is that something only done manually or if you had a catastrophic event like fire, explosion or other complication could those things have served to disable those communications is system? >> absolutely. you can have it both ways at this point. i think the problem with the deliberate, intentional act theory is that you really don't have anybody taking credit for it or indication that it was terrorist motivated or suicide yet. you talk about the simulator and looking for deleted files. really, why would you have a simulator in plain sight in your home? it may turn out to be deliberate but i don't think so. i think you have to look at the simplest explanation, an aviation accident analysis. that is typically looking at a malfunction in the plane. there is a way to generate that kind of sequential failure mode of the transponder. there are antennas where you could have a fire that originated and started knocking out these systems sequentially while the pilots try to deal with the problem and may have lost oxygen in the aircraft providing the incapacitation that we see if this is a mechanical problem of the plane flying off for five hours without communication or reaction by the flight crew. you can certainly put the dots together in a way that suggests a mechanical failure. >> thank you very much. by the way, i understand you are a navy pilot. thank you for your service, as well. >> my pleasure. thank you. ukraine's acting president is calling for the release of a top air force commander saying he was abducted by pro-russian forces. russia says the flag is flying over close to 200 facilities. senior foreign affairs correspondent is following the story from kiev. hello. >> reporter: the latest word that we are getting from crimea is that the russian takeover of the peninsula continues. ukrainian's defense ministry is confirmingt that russian troops are surrounding a base with the most elite fighting forces of the area. so far the marines are said to be standing their ground. this is all from a violent takeover, we have confirmed that authorities are still holding its commander. meanwhile, amid another pro-russia rally in the eastern ukrainian city more word about russian troop movement. nato's top military commander is quoted as saying russian troops gathered there are quote very, very sizable, very, very ready. he also said there they are not only a threat to ukraine but could reach the western border. here in kiev a big crowd gathered independent square. you are listening to speakers talk about the new russian threat and what should be done. they are worried. take a listen. >> i feel very bad because i love ukraine. to me ukraine must be together. >> russia is moving very fast. we should do something. >> no russia. we can see russia -- >> not possible. >> it's not possible. >> reporter: for its part moscow says it has no intention of invading mainland ukraine but is only worried about the well being of ethnic russians here. we have heard that before. back to you. >> we most certainly have. thank you very much. nato's top military commander describing the russian force as quite very, very sizable and very, very ready. does it signal the possibility that more forceful tactics from russia are ahead? what if anything can u.s. do? joining us now casey mcfarland and general jack keen. welcome both. general keen, i want to start with you. the amassing forces near the border, does it send a message? >> he lied about annexing georgia and lied about crimea and moved troops in on those borders before he actually occupied the countries. i think we have to take it at face value. he has almost two divisions. he is interested in eastern ukraine. despite the fact he is telling us he doesn't have intentions on doing that and lying time and time again, we have to look at the capabilities and measure the capabilities and take it seriously there is a threat there. >> you have the great insight not only into russia but also vladimir putin. what do you make of this? do you think the additional rounds of sanctions will slow him down, stop him in any way? >> no. here is what happened. this week putin gave a speech in moscow at the kremlin. it was an emotional speech, long speech. there were hundreds of russian leaders there and talked about how america had lied to them and humiliated them when the cold war was over. this is payback time for putin. in the audience people were crying, standing on the chairs and cheering. putin has a lot of support for what he is doing and nobody is stopping him. the united states may throw sanctions on. that is a small price to pay for what putin has spent 15 years assembling which has the economic and political power to take back the old soviet empire. >> the speech and appeal and nationalism cheer leading very familiar to a lot of folks. general keen, what ability does ukraine and military have at this point to defend itself against any additional attacks? >> they are no match for the russians to be sure. this military of ukraine has been in decline for years because they haven't invested in it. i believe we should provide them with military aid that they asked for when their new president was here in washington. that's defensive weapons. i think we should provide training with the weapons. i think it makes a commitment to the ukrainians and sends a message to them and to putin. beyond ukraine i think we clearly have to look at putin's strategic long-term goals may be to challenge nato. we have to reinforce the countries that have historic ties to putin on the borderer. i mean troops in the country, u.s./nato troops working to do that. when you put ground troops on it is the political and moral will of the nation. everybody gets the message how serious that is. that should be our next move. >> what about the abandoned missile project plan in that area, as well? >> i think putin is aiming to really weaken nato to the point where it is no longer effective and i think he calculated just right. is a war wary america ready to go to war? i think we can reinstitute that missile shield. it was supposed to happen in the czech republic. barack obama is going to europe this week. he is going to meet with european leaders. he should announce that the united states is plunging itself to have an economic energy summit with european leaders and pledge to help them develop their own oil and natural gas and export our natural gas to them and help in the eastern mediterranean countries. why? because the reason putin is -- he can get away with this stuff is he controls their energy. without russian natural gas all of europe has an energy and particularly an electricity void. they are not going to risk that for a country a lot of people can't find on a map. >> hard to believe that what we saw play out in the '80s and '90s. good to see you both. we love hearing from you at home. we want to know what you think about this very important story. do you think sanctions will stop putin's movement in ukraine?
