Bill you are watching the moments in Lower Manhattan. Also go to the Pentagon Momentarily and shanksville pennsylvania 15 mince from now. Eric shawn is at ground 0. He was there on that day and joins us again on this 9 11. Eric, good morning. Good morning, bill. You know, the soulful and somber reading of the names continuing now. With each name im reminded behind each burn there was a life, loved ones, family. You hear the tributes from the daughters, the granddaughters, nieces and nephews who in some cases pay tribute to the loved one who they never met because there is a new generation now of people, some who were not even alive on that day 22 years ago. As always, each year the officials, the Family Members and survivors have gathered here at what was called ground 0. Now is a site of tribute and remembrance and inspiration with these magnificent two footprints and water falls around which are etched in granite the names of all those who were killed here, nearly 3,000 names will be read including those not just who died on 9 11 this day, but in the 1993 attack at the World Trade Center, both victims all of radical islamic terrorism. Even though this country and the world has gone through the effects and the death of what that philosophy brings, the threat still does exist. We talked with new York City Police commissioner earlier this morning and he told us that despite that, yes, the country and the city are safer today than we were back on that day on 9 11. Right now a credible threat to work city. Even security from 9 11 or any event in New York City well make sure that we have resources out there. So there are a lot of things the public will see and a lot they wont see. Rest assured well keep New York City safe. The legacy of this day is not just what happened here and those who were lost but also those continuing to die from the effects of the toxic dust that they breathed either in the air in Lower Manhattan or on that pile. Just last week the new York Fire Department added 43 names of firefighters who have succumbed to illnesses related to 9 11 and their service down here at that time. 341 firefighters have succumbed to 9 11 related illness east. Shy of the 343 killed on that day. In terms of others, the citizens, 2,835 people have died of cancers, of lung diseases, of Digestive Diseases and other ailments brought by that toxic dust. That number is over the 2,753 who were actually killed here on that day. Among the officials, Vice President harris is here, Florida Governor ron desantis running for president invited by the Family Members Group of those who are here. Tonight the iconic tribute to light will light up the night sky evoking what was lost on those days and what has been lost, which we will never replace, that we will never forget what happened here. To our viewers if you come to new york please come visit the site. You have been here. See the museum. They have a display that shows the photos of many of the victims who died here, the people behind the names that we are hearing now, the human aspect of what happened here. Bill. Bill thank you, eric. Back with you momentarily there in Lower Manhattan. Eric shawn. Dana President Biden is en route to alaska. The first u. S. President to commemorate that tragic day away terre the white house or the sites of the attacks. Alexandria hoff is live at the white house. The president making his way back from an overseas trip. It will take quite some time. With each year there is greater concern about infamily fading. Two years ago he visited all three crash sites. Last year delivered remarks at the pentagon. This year is the first time a president is not on u. S. Soil as the names are read in New York City. Once in anchorage he will deliver marks and meet with 1,000 Service Members, responders and their families. He plans to honor the lives lost and the families and loved ones who still feel the pain of that terrible day. This is something he feels is very important to do. We can only imagine that heartbreak and the pain that the 9 11 families have felt every day for the past 22 years. But its unclear if the president will meet with anyone who was personally impacted or who lost loved ones in the September 11th attacks. Retired colonel lost his brother. Maybe President Biden being at a distance is for the best. Quite frankly, i prefer he stay away anyway. We will be spared one of his stories of how he can relate like he did with the people of lahaina. He can relate because of a kitchen fire that singed his pets whiskers. We can do without that. The president s absence, Vice President harris is attending the commemoration in New York City now. First Lady Jill Biden will lay a wreath at the at the pentagon and the first gentlemen is headed to shanksville and lay a wreath at the flight 93 memorial. Dana thank you. Bill as they continue to read the names in Lower Manhattan we want to bring in our colleague and friend of many years, karl rove. Good morning to you. You were in the thick of it 22 years ago on this tuesday morning, September 11th, 2001. Then President Bush was at an Elementary School in sarasota, florida. The focus was education. That was the moment andy card walked in and whispered in his ear and his presidency changed. It was three days later where he came down to ground 0, climbed on top of a all that steel and all the guys around him were yelling we cant hear you. Here is how the Exchange Went that day september 14th. I can hear you. [cheers and applause] i can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people [cheers and applause] and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon. [cheers and applause] [crowd chanting usa, usa, usa] bill that Gentlemen Left is bob beckwith, a firefighter who grew up in queens and became a Household Name after that. When you think about moments you cannot anticipate and how they not only changed the course of your presidency, but changed the course of World History, what do you recall from that week 22 years ago. First the moment we just saw was an accident. A white house advance person named nina bishop, the night before, had got in an argument with her colleagues. She felt when President Bush visited ground 0 he needed to speak and her colleagues disagreed. That morning she decided to make her voice heard by suggesting as the president arrived at ground 0, she literally came up to me and said they need to hear from him. She was absolutely right. I went to andy card, the chief of staff, and said they want to hear from him. He said where can he do it . I said he might be able to do it over there on top of a fire truck that had been collapsed by debris falling on top of it. Three guys standing on top of the truck. He said do we have a sound system . I said nina bishop is getting a bull horn. He talked to the president. Make sure the place is stable. I went over to the truck. Three guys are standing on top of it and i said jump up and down. They looked at me like i was a complete moron but they jumped up and down. And when they did, part of the wheel cover had a piece of debris on top of it and it jiggled. I went to move it and i cop said dont move that. There might be a Body Part Underneath and at that one of the three people on top of the truck jumped off the back and out of history. Two guys were left. I said stay there, wait. Somebody may need your help. The second person dropped off. One guy is left on top of that truck, rob beckwith. He is looking over the crowd not paying attention going on whats underneath him. A guy yells, give me a hand. He reaches down, grabs the hand, pulls the guy up and realizes its the president of the United States and sort of gets a little wobbly. He draped his arm over bob. Bob is trying to get out of there. The rest is history. The president with a bull horn didnt know how to operate it. Was talking into it. The crowd started yelling we cant hear you. No speech writer, no discussion in advance, no what is the right tone for the president to stick . The president said what he wanted to say. The crowd, you heard the response. Dana can karl, there were many opportunities for the president to speak to the nation. I printed one of the lines on a piece of paper and had it tacked up on my office wall when i worked at the white house with you and under the president. We will not tire, we will not falter, we will not fail. Peace and freedom will prevail. And thinking of the heartache for some of these young people who are bravely reading names today. Names that might be even difficult to pronounce and talking about loved ones they never got to meet, it is still moving. I think the moment and us bringing it to everybody to look at today means we did mean it when we said never forget. Yeah. We cant forget. We cant forget that our country was attacked on that day. We must be vigilant. That threat to our country hasnt gone away. You are right. It is so poignant to hear people praise and describe the affection and love they have for a lost colleague or member of the family. And even just simply the names themselves. I found myself moved when i heard that name todd beaver. Remarkable family. Thats the guy who led the first attack the First Response to the attack on our country when he said lets roll. He and a group of patriots and heroes brought down flight 93 in shanksville, pennsylvania before it could be brought down on the u. S. Capitol or the white house or another important symbol of america. And, you know, it was unexpected when his name was called and i felt that pang of regret and loss. A moment of challenge and danger for our country when people like beamer steps forward. Bill thank you. Dana thank you for your reflections, karl. Bill back down to ground 0 in a moment. Several events moments of silence we should say that are forthcoming and we wont miss one of them. Stay with us as we move through this morning here on September 11th, 2023. Some other headlines were watching. This is an absolutely devastating earthquake in morocco. 2,000 confirmed dead. We will get you an update on latest to save lives. Dana were keeping an eye on Hurricane Lee how it is impacting the east coast as it returns to category 3. Bill as we reflect on September 11th and where we are today in World History and what has happened over the last two plus decades this is happening soon. Kim jong unwill meet with Vladimir Putin in russia. How soon that could happen and what the two will decide upon still to come. Still to come. Special olympics athletes with developmental needs. Dana 341 members of the fdny have died of illnesses related to ground 0 recovery. Equal number of those killed during the terror attacks. Lets bring in paul mauro. Audience might not realize where you started. You were an officer. Where were you on 9 11 and the days after . I worked in manhattan as a lot of cops did. By default thats why you were respond. I was home in bed and i had worked until 4 00 a. M. I got the call. I was watching after the first plane hit thinking hopefully it was an accident and saw the second plane hit. Knew i had to saddle up. Drove my ram shackle car as far as long island city. Had to park it on a traffic island. I didnt get back to it for a week or two. It wasnt worth stealing. Walked into manhattan. All the bridges were closed and everybody was leaving on foot through 59th Street Bridge and the other bridges. Got deployed down there just after the second tower came down. And was there for the next building that came down, that was a harrowing experience. The heat hit us first and then came the Shimmering Cloud Of Dust with all the particles in it. I remember myself and a Spanish Language news crew of three people running for it and running into an atm and getting the door closed and this cloud of stuff came past us. It is strange how you remember certain things. To this day i remember the sound of onair personinalities heels running up elm street or one of the blocks down there. The sound of her heels running as fast as she could in high heels for, i guess she thought her life. We didnt know what it meant. Fortunately it didnt and then they interviewed me in the atm. I wonder what ever became of that tape. That is one of the Vivid Recollect us of that day and the months afterwards. Dana one of the things you said you were somebody who could type and they sent you to the morgue in those days after ward. You write on your sub stack today notes from ground 0 and talk about cell phones and that memory might be worth recalling here. Thats one of the memories that sticks with me. I while i was down there in the weeks afterwards i was seeing things that i knew would be historic and so i was just making notes to myself and stuffing them in a pocket. I wrote them up and went out to a lot of places and it got something of an audience. But one of the stories in there is that yeah, they found out i could type. They put me in what was supposed to be a hospital. Unfortunately the event was so large you either you made it or didnt. There wasnt a hospital. It became a morgue. A tent reside ground 0. People were bringing in stuff out of the pile and do shifts on the pile. They would give us the cell phones. They accumulated in a box, hundreds of them. Every now and then one of the phones would ring and you would pick up the phone and look and see mom, you know, or dad or something. And the question became among myself and the doctors, do we answer . Do you give in those days it was no code. You just pick it up. It became a question do you want to give somebody false hope. We dont know who it is. We decided we werent going to answer any of the phones. That was a harrowing thing i will always remember. Bill your job changed after that from protecting the streets to protecting the homeland in so many ways. Thank you for talking with us. We saw a yellow rose being laid on one of the names down there with a 9 11 committee has done, the water fall is beautiful, by the way. Dana gorgeous. Bill this came a bit early from the pentagon, The Moment Of Silence. [moment of silence] [taps being played] dana that was The Moment Of Silence at the pentagon and Jennifer Griffin is our reporter, a correspondent at the pentagon who has been there every year that they have honored this moment and we turn to her now, hi, jennifer. A very powerful moment at the pentagon. 22 years later it is hard to believe that most military recruits heading into basic training and even some officers currently serving in the u. S. Military were not born when 9 11 occurred. For some of us who have been covering 9 11 and the after math for our entire adult careers thats breathtaking. Dawn this morning at the pentagon an American Flag was unfurled at the Point Of Impact of American Airlines flight 77 which struck the outer ering of the pentagon between quarters 4 and 5 which was undergoing a renovation so many people who would have been killed that day were not in their offices. The plane struck at 9 37 a. M. 184 people were killed. Those on board including those on board. It was the worst attack on american soil since japans assault on pearl harbor in 1941. General millie is speaking now. Lets go to the pentagon. Fell the absence of fathers and mothers and sons of daughters at birthdays, holidays, graduations and weddings. And ordinary days of the weak when their loss moves them yet again. Today, today we honor those who perished and today we uphold our enduring promise to never forget. At 9 37 a. M. Right now, 22 years ago on September 11th, 2001, American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the pentagon right about where we are. 184 souls were murdered as terrorism battered americas shores. The hijackers were driven by a twisted ideology rooted in hatred and oppression and took the lives of the 59 passengers and crew and 125 of our pentagon colleagues. Those terrorists hated america. They hated our constitution and the values that bind us together as a nation. They hated freedom and democracy and the idea that we are all equal. Those terrorists wanted to destroy our country. But on that day and every day since the United States has demonstrated that we would never bow to fear and hatred. Momentarily shaken, the United States rose from the ashes of the World Trade Center, the pentagon, and a field in pennsylvania to show the world that we were still standing, that we could not be toppled, that terror would never destroy us. The New York City Fire Department arrived at the World Trade Center within six minutes of the Plane Colliding into the building. Firefighters, First Responders and everyday heroes led thousands of survivors down dozens of flights of stairs making repeated trips back into the building sacrificing their lives so that others may live. For people they had never met. The 40 passengers and crew on united flight 93 fought back against the hijackers thwarting the terrorists and saving perhaps thousands on the ground. At the pentagon, many survivors were rescued by coworkers who were themselves reeling from the explosive force of the impact and nearly impenetrable fire and smoke. Whose sheer will and their own knowledge of the building they plunged into the smoke and debris fearless without regard to their own life, they plunged into that horror that littered the corridors to seek out the bloodied and burned survivors. And deliver them from the inferno. Amidst the explosions, the fires and the terror, ordinary americans demonstrated extraordinary valor and courage. Despite the loss of 125 of our colleagues and a gaping, smoking hole between corridors 4 and 5 in the pentagon, it did not close. The leaders of the day assured the American Public that the world that the doors of the pentagon would be open again on September 12th and indeed the next day thousands of military, civilian and contractors showed up for work. Some before sun rise filled with renewed purpose and determination. As the American Flag unfolded over the gaping hole. The building was still on fire, yet these incredible men and women continued to defend our democracy and our nation. Over the past 22 years, many more have chosen to step forward and serve the cause of freedom. Every single day, the men and women who have worn the cloth of our nation have protected the defended the principles that were under attack that day. Today we honor and remember those we lost on that fateful morning. We continue to stand watch on freedoms frontier around the world to insure that those fallen did not die in vain. Today we reaffirm our resolve that our experiment in Liberty Continues for future generations. 22 years ago hatred and terror did not win. It did not destroy america. Freedom and democracy and the very pillars of this great nation continue to endure. Ladies and gentlemen, its my honor to introduce our secretary of defense, honorable lloyd j. Austin the third. Thank you, may god bless the fallen, their families and may god bless the United States of america. Thank you, general milley, good morning, everyone. I am absolutely honored to be here with all of you on this day of remembrance and resolve. Im especially moved to be here with the Family Members of those who lost and the survivors of the attacks, and with the First Responders who raced to save innocent lives. To the families and the loved ones of the 184 people who lost their lives on 9 11 here at the Pen Pentagon On flight 77 let me express my sincere condolences. I know that being here is hard. I know that it aches to remember this milestone year after year. And i know that nothing can make it right. And as the years go by, it may feel that the world is moving on or even forgetting what happened here on September 11th, 2001. But please know this, the men and women of the Department Of Defense will always remember. We will always honor the memory of our fallen teammates and we will always strive to be worthy of the memory of those we lost. September 11th reminds us that the American Spirit still shines in times of testing. After the attacks, amid the horror and the grief, Many Americans felt a deeper sense of duty to their communities, and to their country. And all around the country, with hearts breaking for the slain and the suffering, americans looked within themselves and felt called to give back. Those terrible first hours and days, people rushed to give blood, to volunteer in hospitals, or to hand out food and water to exhausted First Responders. Here at the pentagon, an Outstanding Group of employees and volunteers got a Family Assistance Center up and running in less than a day. Over the next month, over 2,500 people volunteered there. So they worked long hours to serve hot meals and provide counseling and offer medical care and help families through their grief. You know, not every act of service was monumental. We remember a hug for a soldier on the streets of manhattan. Or a childs handwritten thank you card for a firefighter. But every act of grace changed us. Drawing at a strength and sense of common purpose that became part of the story of that day. And part of the story of our country. As the months and years went by, Many Americans chose to help those in need or to fortify our security in a newly uncertain world. September 11th made america a nation at war. Hundreds of thousands stepped up to serve our country in uniform. The wars in iraq and afghanistan have come to a close, but we remain relentlessly focused on combating Terrorist Threats to america. I want to thank all of my fellow veterans who served in combat during two hard decades of war after 9 11, as well as their families for all that they gave. The courage and the compassion that we witnessed after September 11th were even more extraordinary when they came from americans who lost loved ones. Im thinking today of kang. He was born in south vietnam. He made it to america and graduated from the University Of Maryland with a degree in electrical engineering. And on 9 11 he was working as a Systems Administrator at the Navy Command Center right here in the pentagon. He left behind a beloved wife, and their 4yearold son. His wife who also worked for the department was devastated by her husbands death but resolved to be strong to support their son. And so 22 years later, his wife and son are incredibly close and their tie has only grown stronger from the loss they have endured. They talk every day and she is so proud of the young man that he has become. The son still tries to make his dad proud and honor his legacy in ways big and small. That can mean echoing his fathers love of learning or taking up the guitar or simply staying engaged with his community. And finding ways to help others just as his dad did. So in september 2021, on the 20th Anniversary of 9 11, his wife visited the memorial to place flowers on the bench with her husbands name on it. She felt a wave of sadness looking at the benchings honoring other victims that were bare. She called up a friend and they came back here together and they laid a rose on each of the 184 benches around us. So now, thanks to her simple act of kindness, every year on this day the Department Of Defense upholds that tradition and laying a rose on every bench to honor the memory of every soul taken from us here on 9 11. Ladies and gentlemen, were honored to have them both here with us today. I want to thank them and all of the families of the fallen. September 11th changed you forever. But you changed us forever. In so many ways you turned grief into grit, sorrow into strength. And you helped us to see beyond ourselves and give back to our fellow americans and to deepen our democracy and work toward a stronger, safer future. So it is our duty to carry out the missions that your loved ones chose. Its our duty to live up to the goodness that they embodied. And it is our duty to defend democracy that they love so much. So we will always seek to meet that challenge. We will always strive to live up to their example and their memory. We will always work to keep america safe and we will always, always remember. May god bless you all and may god continue to bless the United States of america. Thank you very much. Bill poignant words from lloyd austin. Every act of grace changed us. With the tender remarks from ground 0 and the pentagon and soon shanksville. Dan hoffman is with us now. You have been all over the world. A long time employed with the c. I. A. You think about the threats we took on and defeated and the threats still out there today. A top line thought from you today as we look at a war that continues in so many respects. Yeah, you know, my first thought is to the firefighters and Law Enforcement and the Good Samaritans who put their heads to the pillow the night before in New York City and never could have imagined that next day, September 11th, would be a day that would matter more than any other to them. They rushed towards danger to save innocent civilians who had been targeted by ruthless terrorists. On that day they were heroes and inspired me and my colleagues. I was in estonia the day we were attacked. We all knew my c. I. A. Colleagues and i that our lives, careers would be transformed. I went on to spend like my colleagues did years in war zones taking the fight to the enemy and doing our best to protect the homeland. Dana dan, where do you think we are today in terms of our posture . At the time we were on our back foot when it came to dealing with terrorism. President bush said we need to go on offense and where do you think we are today 23 years later . We did that and i think we had a very effective strategy that Charles Krauthammer outlined. Forward defense. U. S. Military and Intelligence Community and state Department Diplomats would deploy overseas often in harms way where the terrorists were so we could detect and preempt threats before they visited our homeland. We dont have that ability in afghanistan and its the same toxic mixture of a Taliban Ruthless Regime and ungoverned pace that isis and al qaeda are plotting against us. Thats my concern going forward. Bill well stay in touch and monitor the progress or lack there of. Thank you for your service for all these years. Back down to ground 0 and thats a shot, isnt it, dana . These two beautiful young ladies. Dana they are so brave these young people to get up and public speaking is difficult but theyre so poised, gracious and dignified and struck the right mood this morning. Former state Department Spokesman morgan or and guy benson. What you might have thought on 9 11 and how you shaped yourself about these principles. I was a High School Junior and lived right across the river. My town lost 12 people. My next door neighbor was in one of the towers. She got out. My father was commuting every day through those buildings. We couldnt contact him that morning. It was terrible. It gets me every year when they read the names. Some were people i knew. We have younger viewers who probably dont have a clear memory of that day or any memory of that day. I encourage them to read up, go down the youtube rabbit hole on this. It is worth knowing what happened to this country. Bill first name read every year is a gentleman named gordon a. Aamoth, senior. His family has the honor and distinction being the first because we move in alphabetical order. Just a small comment here and a touch there by loved ones reminds us of how the lives of those that were taken from them still has such an impact on them. For very good reason. This moment changed the world and you think about today, morgan and well pause for a moment because at 9 59 is the moment the south tower collapsed. Remember the north tower got hit first, south tower hit second. The south tower fell first and 30 minutes later the north tower collapsed. The way the world was divided after 9 11. We came together on some things but a lot of people chose sides and you think about the war in ukraine today and the world is choosing sides yet again. And you think about north korea and russia and this meeting they will have in russia. It is a different world. It is a different threat but nonetheless if the use wants to maintain its posture as the leader of the free world we need to be part of this conversation and make decisions that help promote democracy and help bring peace in corners of the world where we can. Morgan, i want you to comment on that as soon as we get done with The Moment Of Silence when the south tower fell. Back down to ground 0. John richard. Christopher michael grady. Edwin j. Graph, iii.
